Abstract:The factors that affect the maximum power flow between AC and DC systems were studied from three perspectives for the power synchronization control based MMC-HVDC, which is suitable to connect with weak AC systems. First, from the steady state point of view, the main factors influencing the maximum power flow between AC and DC systems are short circuit ratios, impedance angles of the system and the direction of power flow. Then a small signal model was developed according to the power synchronization control strategy to present dynamics of controllers and circuits. The small signal model was validated with the rigorous electromagnetic transient model developed PSCAD/EMTDC. From the root loci of the small signal model, conclusions can be drawn that when linked with weak AC systems, MMC can achieve the maximum power flow deduced from the steady state model under small signal stability constraints while the damping ratio is very low when linked with strong AC systems. Finally, the smallest SCR was found in order to overcome the special synchronism stability problem for PSC-based MMC-HVDC. The results show that when the SCR is slightly greater than 1, the DC system can handle unbalanced and balanced faults as well as the switch from grid connection to island operation.
