Abstract:We report topological nonlinear optics with spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a cavity. The cavity is driven by a pump laser and weak probe laser which excite Bose-Einstein condensate to an intermediate storage level, where the standard Raman process engineers spin-orbit coupling. We show that the nonlinear photonic interactions at the transitional pathways of dressed states result in new type of optical transparencies, which get completely inverted with atom induced gain. These nonlinear interactions also implant topological sort of features in probe transmission modes by inducing gapless Dirac-like cones, which become gaped in presence of Raman detuning. The topological features get interestingly enhanced in gain regime where the gapless topological edge-like states emerge among the probe modes, which can cause non-trivial phase transition. We show that spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman field effects also impressively revamp fast and slow probe light. The manipulation of dressed states for quantum nonlinear optics with topological characteristics in our findings could be a crucial step towards topological quantum computation.

Abstract:We consider a ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) dispersively coupled to a unidirectional ring cavity. We show that the ability of the cavity to modify, in a highly nonlinear fashion, matter-wave phase shifts adds an additional dimension to the study of spinor condensates. In addition to demonstrating strong matter-wave bistability as in our earlier publication [L. Zhou et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 160403 (2009)], we show that the interplay between atomic and cavity fields can greatly enrich both the physics of critical slowing down in spin-mixing dynamics and the physics of spin-domain formation in spinor condensates.

Abstract:Stochastic resonance is a phenomenon in which adding random noise to a system enhances the detection or transmission of a weak signal. It occurs when the noise interacts with the system's nonlinearity, thus improving signal-to-noise ratio and increasing sensitivity. Although parametric resonances in an atomic spinor Bose-Einstein condensate have been investigated, the question of whether one can observe stochastic resonance in such a system persists. In this study we propose a scheme for generating stochastic resonance in a cavity-spinor Bose-Einstein condensate coupling system. We demonstrate stochastic resonance through numerical calculations using the mean-field theory and truncated Wigner approximation methods. Furthermore, the characteristics of the system's response to noise and periodic signals are studied in detail. This study unravels a new scheme for observing stochastic resonance via linking atomic many-body physics with cavity quantum electrodynamics.

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme to generate the spin-orbit coupling for a condensate placed inside an optical cavity by using a standing wave and a traveling wave. It is shown that the interplay of the laser lights and the cavity gives rise to rich quantum phases. Our scheme also generates a large synthetic magnetic field for the dressed spin state, which may facilitate the study of the quantum Hall effect in ultracold atomic gases.

Abstract:We study the Faraday patterns generated by spin-orbit-coupling induced parametric resonance in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive interaction. The collective elementary excitations of the Bose-Einstein condensate, including density waves and spin waves, are coupled as the result of the Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling and a quench of the relative phase of two Raman lasers without the modulation of any of the system's parameters. We observed several higher parametric resonance tongues at integer multiples of the driving frequency and investigated the interplay between Faraday instabilities and modulation instabilities when we quench the spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate from zero-momentum phase to plane-wave phase. If the detuning is equal to zero, the wave number of combination resonance barely changes as the strength of spin-orbit coupling increases. If the detuning is not equal to zero after a quench, a single combination resonance tongue will split into two parts.

Abstract:Floquet engineering is a promising tool to manipulate quantum systems coherently. A well-known example is the optical Stark effect, which has been used for optical trapping of atoms and breaking time-reversal symmetry in solids. However, as a coherent nonlinear optical effect, Floquet engineering typically requires high field intensities obtained in ultrafast pulses, severely limiting its use. Here, we demonstrate using cavity engineering of the vacuum modes to achieve orders-of-magnitude enhancement of the effective Floquet field, enabling Floquet effects at an extremely low fluence of 450 photons/μm2. At higher fluences, the cavity-enhanced Floquet effects lead to 50 meV spin and valley splitting of WSe2 excitons, corresponding to an enormous time-reversal breaking, non-Maxwellian magnetic field of over 200 T. Utilizing such an optically controlled effective magnetic field, we demonstrate an ultrafast, picojoule chirality XOR gate. These results suggest that cavity-enhanced Floquet engineering may enable the creation of steady-state or quasi-equilibrium Floquet bands, strongly non-perturbative modifications of materials beyond the reach of other means, and application of Floquet engineering to a wide range of materials and applications.

Abstract:We investigated the optomechanical dynamics and explored the quantum phase of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a ring cavity. The interaction between the atoms and the cavity field in the running wave mode induces a semiquantized spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for the atoms. We found that the evolution of the magnetic excitations of the matter field resembles that of an optomechanical oscillator moving in a viscous optical medium, with very good integrability and traceability, regardless of the atomic interaction. Moreover, the light-atom coupling induces a sign-changeable long-range interatomic interaction, which reshapes the typical energy spectrum of the system in a drastic manner. As a result, a new quantum phase featuring a high quantum degeneracy was found in the transitional area for SOC. Our scheme is immediately realizable and the results are measurable in experiments.

Abstract:We study the mutual interaction of a Bose-Einstein condensed gas with a single mode of a high-finesse optical cavity. We show how the cavity transmission reflects condensate properties, and calculate the self-consistent intracavity light field and condensate evolution. Solving the coupled condensate-cavity equations we find that while falling through the cavity, the condensate is adiabatically transfered into the ground state of the periodic optical potential. This allows time-dependent nondestructive measurements on Bose-Einstein condensates, with intriguing prospects for subsequent controlled manipulation.

Abstract:Atom interferometer has been proven to be a powerful tool for precision metrology. Here we propose a cavity-aided nonlinear atom interferometer, based on the quasi-periodic spin mixing dynamics of an atomic spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensate trapped in an optical cavity. We unravel that the phase sensitivity can be greatly enhanced with the cavity-mediated nonlinear interaction. The influence of encoding phase, splitting time and recombining time on phase sensitivity are carefully studied. In addition, we demonstrate a dynamical phase transition in the system. Around the criticality, a small cavity light field variation can arouse a strong response of the atomic condensate, which can serve as a new resource for enhanced sensing. This work provides a robust protocol for cavity-enhanced metrology.

Abstract:The dynamics of arbitrary-order quantum correlations in a cavity magnon-polariton system are investigated based on the quantum master equation in the coherent state representation. The phenomena of Rabi-like oscillation and level repulsion of the average cavity-photon number agree remarkably well with existing experimental observations. The competing nature of coherent and incoherent components in these two cases is further revealed by the second-order quantum coherence of the cavity photons and magnons, which can be systematically tuned by the driving microwave and thermal bath. Our results demonstrate the rich higher-order quantum dynamics induced by magnetic light-matter interaction, and serve as an indispensable step toward exploring nonclassical states for cavity photons and magnons in quantum cavity magnonics.

Abstract:We study the instability of a ring Bose-Einstein condensate under a periodic modulation of inter-atomic interactions. The condensate exhibits temporal and spatial patterns induced by the parametric resonance, which can be characterized by Bogoliubov quasi-particle excitations in the Floquet basis. As the ring geometry significantly limits the number of excitable Bogoliubov modes, we are able to capture the non-linear dynamics of the condensate using a three-mode model. We further demonstrate the robustness of the temporal and spatial patterns against disorder, which are attributed to the mode-locking mechanism under the ring geometry. Our results can be observed in cold atomic systems and are also relevant to physical systems described by the non-linear Schrodinger's equation.

Abstract:We study Floquet states of a nonlinear two-state model which is associated with a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) held in a driven double-well trap on the mean-field level. We reveal that the system exhibits pitchfork bifurcation and saddle-node bifurcation for resonance and off-resonance driven cases. Such a feature provides a new method for quasienergy band engineering and for precise control of the nonlinear Floquet states.
Cavity-mediated Oscillating and Trapping Dynamics in a Two-Component Condensate

Abstract:Cold atoms in cavity provides a new platform for exploring exotic many-body phases. Here we explore the dynamics of a two-component condensate coupled to a finesse cavity, in which the Raman coupling is mediated by pumping laser and cavity mode. In this model, the energy scale of cavity mode is several order of magnitude bigger than that in the condensate, thus the small fluctuations in the cavity field may have important consequence in the dynamics of condensate. Beyond the steady-state approximaton, we show the cavity can play two different roles to this dynamics. In the first case, it imprints a gauge potential to the dynamics of condensate, giving rise to zero and $\pi$ Josephson dynamics. Nevertheless, in the other case, it plays the role of non-reciprocial transportation between the two hyperfine states, in which the stability of the fixed points are tuned from elliptic to stable spiral for one of the trapped phase and unstable spiral for the other trapped phase, thus the oscillating dynamics will finally ceased. The transition between these dynamics can be controlled by the parameters of the cavity field and the driving field. Our results demonstrate an novel way to engineer the dynamics of condensate by tuning the stability of the fixed points.

Abstract:Within the Floquet theory of periodically driven quantum systems, the nonlinear single-spin dynamics under pulse of a circularly polarized electromagnetic field is analyzed. It is demonstrated that the field, first, lifts the spin degeneracy and, second, the field-induced spin splitting is accompanied by the photon emission at the spitting frequency. This two-stage process leads, particularly, to the polarization of spins along angular momentum of the circularly polarized field. As a result, the pulse-induced magnetization appears, what can be observed in state-of the-art measurements.

Abstract:This work explores the possibility of creating and controlling unconventional nonlinearities by periodic driving, in a broad class of systems described by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). By means of a parent quantum many-body description, we demonstrate that such driven systems are well captured by an effective NLSE with emergent nonlinearities, which can be finely controlled by tuning the driving sequence. We first consider a general class of two-mode nonlinear systems - relevant to optical Kerr cavities, waveguides and Bose-Einstein condensates - where we find an emergent four-wave mixing nonlinearity, which originates from pair-hopping processes in the parent quantum picture. Tuning this drive-induced nonlinearity is shown to modify the phase-space topology, which can be detected through relative population and phase measurements. We then couple individual (two-mode) dimers in view of designing extended lattice models with unconventional nonlinearities and controllable pair-hopping processes. Following this general dimerization construction, we obtain an effective lattice model with drive-induced interactions, whose ground-state exhibits orbital order, chiral currents and emergent magnetic fluxes through the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry. We analyze these intriguing properties both in the weakly-interacting (mean-field) regime, captured by the effective NLSE, and in the strongly-correlated quantum regime. Our general approach opens a route for the engineering of unconventional optical nonlinearities in photonic devices and controllable drive-induced interactions in ultracold quantum matter.

Abstract:We examine the nonlinear dynamical behavior of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential. Considering a condensate with large number of atoms, such that it can be described using the mean field theory, we separate the spinor dynamics from the spatial dynamics under the single-mode approximation. We limit ourselves to certain initial conditions under which the spatial mode is frozen so that we can focus on the spinor dynamics only. Identifying collective spin variables of our system, we derive the corresponding nonlinear equations of motion for them. Employing standard stability analysis, we find and characterize fixed points of the system. For a wide range of physical parameters such as tunneling strength and non-linear interactions, as well as for various initial preparations of the system, we identify qualitatively different dynamical regimes possible in the system. In particular, complete and incomplete oscillations of spin variables between quantum wells are found. We also show that by bringing some fixed points close to each other in the phase space of the system, it is possible to induce amplitude modulation to those otherwise regular tunneling oscillations.
Strong Spin Squeezing Induced by Weak Squeezing of Light inside a Cavity

Abstract:We propose a simple method for generating spin squeezing of atomic ensembles in a Floquet cavity subject to a weak, detuned two-photon driving. We demonstrate that {\it the weak squeezing of light inside the cavity can, counterintuitively, induce strong spin squeezing}. This is achieved by exploiting the anti-Stokes scattering process of a photon pair interacting with an atom. Specifically, {\it one photon of the photon pair is scattered into the cavity resonance by absorbing partially the energy of the other photon whose remaining energy excites the atom}. The scattering, combined with a Floquet sideband, provides an alternative mechanism to implement Heisenberg-limited spin squeezing. Our proposal does {\it not} need multiple classical and cavity-photon drivings applied to atoms in ensembles, and therefore its experimental feasibility is greatly improved compared to other cavity-based schemes. As an example, we demonstrate a possible implementation with a superconducting resonator coupled to a nitrogen-vacancy electronic-spin ensemble.

Abstract:We consider an antiferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a Fabry-Perot optical resonator in which the intracavity light field forms an optical lattice potential for the atoms. Special emphasis is paid to the cavity-mediated superfluid-Mott-insulator transition. We find that exotic phase diagrams can appear due to the competition between cavity-induced nonlinear interactions and the atomic spin-dependent collision interactions.

Abstract:The idea of making photons effectively interact has attracted a lot of interest in recent years, for several reasons. Firstly, since photons do not naturally interact with each other, it is of fundamental physical interest to see what kind of medium can mediate interactions between these fundamental and non-interacting particles, and to what extent. Secondly, photonics is a major candidate for future quantum technology, due to the easy manipulation, readout, and transport of photons, which makes them ideal for quantum information processing. Finally, achieving strong and tunable interactions among photons would open up an avenue for exploring the many-body physics of a fluid of light. In this thesis, we will see how a cavity formed of subwavelength lattices of two-level atoms can confine photons to a nonlinear environment for a long time, such that emitted photons have accumulated strong correlations both among their momenta and in their temporal statistics. This speaks of a strong photon-photon interaction within the cavity. The nonlinearity originates in the saturability of individual atoms, and the lattice structure results in a strong and low-loss collective interaction with light. While a single atomic lattice has a largely linear nature, as the effect of individual atoms washes out in the collective response, the confining geometry of the cavity means the photons are exposed to the underlying saturability of the atoms for such a long time that the nonlinearity is revived. We will analyse this system both using a standard input-output formalism, where the nonlinear physics of the system is handled numerically, and a powerful Green's function-based approach that allows for exact analytical results with no additional approximations. This analytical description has the potential to lead to an exact study of the many-body physics of interacting photons in a two-dimensional setting.

Abstract:We theoretically study the dynamics of a strongly coupled quantum dot–bimodal microcavity system under an external magnetic field, where the nondegenerate excitonic spin states caused by the Zeeman effect are coupled to both orthogonal cavity modes. We develop an effective cavity quantum electrodynamics model, demonstrate the polarization-related nonlinear response under a linearly polarized pulse excitation by calculating the time-resolved intracavity photon number, and investigate the dependence of system parameters on the nonlinearity. In addition, we show that, when driven by two pulses with perpendicular polarization and a relative time delay, the coupled system suppresses the delayed one, which can be applied to polarized optical switching at a single-photon level.
