Abstract:Knowing the efficiency of air conditioners (ACs) in existing applications is imperative to manage building energy use. However, a conclusive method for extensive and general implementation in operating systems is currently unavailable This study experimentally demonstrates a cost-effective, accurate, and non-intrusive monitoring technique that can provide real-time estimations of the performance of air conditioners from different manufacturers that feature different dimensions, rated capacities, and control characteristics. A multilayer artificial neural networks (ANNs) model is developed to estimate the cooling capacity supplied by the ACs in real time using non-intrusive, cost-effective, and scalable input parameters measured from outdoor unit. To investigate the model scalability for implementation in different systems, two AC units produced by different manufacturers are employed to generate training and testing data in a testing facility. Different sets of input parameters are investigated to maximize the accuracy and scalability without compromising the cost-effectiveness and ease of measurement. The cross-validation of the proposed technique uses three refrigerant pipe temperatures, compressor power, and miscellaneous power as inputs of monitoring. The results indicate that the ANNs model can successfully estimate the performances of different ACs with errors below 10%, thus demonstrating the applicability of the proposed method for performance monitoring of ACs on different system applications.
