Abstract:NFV ecosystem is flourishing and more and more NF platforms appear, but this makes NF vendors difficult to deliver NFs rapidly to diverse platforms. We propose an NF development framework named NFD for cross-platform NF development. NFD's main idea is to decouple the functional logic from the platform logic —it provides a platform-independent language to program NFs' behavior models, and a compiler with interfaces to develop platform-specific plugins. By enabling a plugin on the compiler, various NF models would be compiled to executables integrated with the target platform. We prototype NFD, build 14 NFs, and support 6 platforms (standard Linux, OpenNetVM, GPU, SGX, DPDK, OpenNF). Our evaluation shows that NFD can save development workload for cross-platform NFs and output valid and performant NFs.

Abstract:Given the widespread deployment of proprietary network functions (NFs), many network management functions (such as testing and policy compliance) need accurate NF models to ensure correctness and reliability. However, because of their proprietary and complex nature, these NFs lack a standardized behavior model. This article reviews existing NF models and modeling approaches, proposes generic modeling methodologies to create standard NF models, and presents the model's applications in network management tasks.

Abstract:In network function virtualization (NFV), network functions (NFs) are chained as a service function chain (SFC) to enhance NF management with high flexibility. Recent solutions indicate that the processing performance of SFCs can be significantly improved by offloading NFs to programmable switches. However, such offloading requires a deep understanding of NF properties to achieve the maximum SFC performance, which brings non-trivial burdens to network administrators. In this paper, we propose LightNF, a novel system that simplifies NF offloading in programmable networks. LightNF automatically dissects comprehensive NF properties (e.g., NF performance behaviors) via code analysis and performance profiling while eliminating manual efforts. It then leverages the analyzed NF properties in its SFC placement so as to produce the performance-optimal offloading. We have implemented a LightNF prototype. Our experiments show that LightNF outperforms state-of-the-art solutions with an orders-of-magnitude reduction in per-packet processing latency and 9.5x improvement in SFC throughput.

Abstract:Network functions (NFs), like firewall, NAT, IDS, have been widely deployed in today's modern networks. However, currently there is no standard specification or modeling language that can accurately describe the complexity and diversity of NFs. Recently there have been research efforts to propose NF models. However, they are often generated manually and thus error-prone. This paper proposes a method to automatically synthesize NF models via program analysis. We develop a tool called NFactor, which conducts code refactoring and program slicing on NF source code, in order to generate its forwarding model. We demonstrate its usefulness on two NFs and evaluate its correctness.

Abstract:Research on cyborg intelligent insects requires the experiment platform to collect data from the distributed sensing models and process the multi-modal signals in real-time. To overcome these issues, we present a novel data model, naming as the Hybrid-synchronized-realtime (HSR) data model, which can synchronize the hybrid raw data channels by a meta data integration method and process them with a fixed priority scheduling algorithm. Real animal experiments show that the insect-machine experiment platform based on the HSR data model can fully satisfy the requirements of cyborg intelligent insect research, especially in dealing with the technical challenges of data synchronization, real-time processing and hybrid data integration. It provides an efficient approach to implement the experiment platform and thus aid the frontier research on cyborg insects.

Abstract:The neurofuzzy GMDH with a feedback loop (NF-GMDH-FL) is presented, based on NF-GMDH and GMDH-FL. The feedback loop of NF-GMDH-FL are investigated and improved in this paper. The neuro fuzzy GMDH with an improved feedback loop (NF-GMDH-IFL) is developed, in which the redundant combinations and computations are discarded. NF-GMDH-IFL has faster training speed and less training time than NF-GMDH-FL. For the convenience of comparison, NF-GMDH, NF-GMDH-FL and NF-GMDH-IFL are applied to two examples, respectively. The simulations show that the capability of NF-GMDH-IFL is better than NF-GMDH and NF-GMDH-FL. Furthermore, the enormous time and memory are saved in NF-GMDH-IFL. The identification and prediction performance for nonlinear systems is observably improved.

Abstract:Most of the published research on fuzzy discrete-event systems (FDESs) has focused on systems that are modeled as deterministic fuzzy automata. In fact, nondeterminism in FDESs occurs in many practical situations and can be used to represent underspecification or incomplete information. In this paper, we pay attention to the modeling and specification of nondeterministic FDESs (NFDESs). We model NFDESs by a new kind of fuzzy automata. To describe adequately the behavior of NFDESs, we introduce the concept of bisimulation, which is a finer behavioral measure than fuzzy language equivalence. Further, we propose the notion of nondeterministic fuzzy specifications (NFSs) to specify the behavior of NFDESs and introduce a satisfaction relation between NFDESs and NFSs. If such a relation exists, then at least one knows that there is no unwanted behavior in the system.
A Data-Driven Operational Integrated Driving Behavioral Model on Highways

Abstract:Car-following (CF) and lane-changing (LC) behavior models have been widely studied separately as the core models of traffic simulation. However, in practice, CF and LC are inseparable and thus integrated driving (ID) models containing CF and LC behaviors emerge. Here, we proposed a new work to introduce the social force (SF) model to the operational ID behavioral model on the highway. First, a data-driven-based operational ID behavioral model is proposed in the hierarchical social force behavioral model framework. Then, the inputs/output of the SF-ID behavioral model is determined. SF-ID model is built by the feed-forward neural networks (FNN), and the network structure and other parameters are calibrated and verified by field data. Results of the test on CF and LC situations show that our proposed FNN SF-ID model has a good capability in reproducing/predicting the operational ID behaviors on the highway. In addition, we also analyzed the structural features of the FNN SF-ID models, and refine the original models by removing insignificant inputs. The comparison results showed that the refined model—FNN SF-ID (R)—performed better than the original models.
RealBehavior: A Framework for Faithfully Characterizing Foundation Models' Human-like Behavior Mechanisms

Abstract:Reports of human-like behaviors in foundation models are growing, with psychological theories providing enduring tools to investigate these behaviors. However, current research tends to directly apply these human-oriented tools without verifying the faithfulness of their outcomes. In this paper, we introduce a framework, RealBehavior, which is designed to characterize the humanoid behaviors of models faithfully. Beyond simply measuring behaviors, our framework assesses the faithfulness of results based on reproducibility, internal and external consistency, and generalizability. Our findings suggest that a simple application of psychological tools cannot faithfully characterize all human-like behaviors. Moreover, we discuss the impacts of aligning models with human and social values, arguing for the necessity of diversifying alignment objectives to prevent the creation of models with restricted characteristics.

Abstract:Behavior modeling facilitates inferring users' intention in real time and offers context-sensitive helps about how to use application software to beginners. Petri Net, Finite State Automata (FSA), IDEF3 and State Charts are traditionally used for behavior modeling. Hierarchical Automata (HA), as an extension of FSA, are characterized by well-structuredness and ease to understand. Most application software has hierarchical graphic user interfaces, which gives full scope to the expressiveness of HA. The formal definition and implementation framework are proposed. A case study of Pro/E is conducted to illustrate the effectiveness of HA in modeling the behavior of application software.

Abstract:We propose a modeling language for non-functional requirements (NFRs) that views NFRs as requirements over qualities, mapping a software-related domain to a quality space. The language is compositional in that it allows (recursively) complex NFRs to be constructed in several ways. Importantly, the language allows the definition of requirements about the quality of fulfillment of other requirements, thus capturing, among others, the essence of probabilistic and fuzzy goals as proposed in the literature. We also offer a methodology for systematically refining informal NFRs elicited from stakeholders, resulting in unambiguous, de-idealized, and measurable requirements. The proposal is evaluated with a requirements dataset that includes 370 NFRs crossing 15 projects. The results suggest that our framework can adequately handle and clarify NFRs generated in practice.
INFAMOUS-NeRF: ImproviNg FAce MOdeling Using Semantically-Aligned Hypernetworks with Neural Radiance Fields

Abstract:We propose INFAMOUS-NeRF, an implicit morphable face model that introduces hypernetworks to NeRF to improve the representation power in the presence of many training subjects. At the same time, INFAMOUS-NeRF resolves the classic hypernetwork tradeoff of representation power and editability by learning semantically-aligned latent spaces despite the subject-specific models, all without requiring a large pretrained model. INFAMOUS-NeRF further introduces a novel constraint to improve NeRF rendering along the face boundary. Our constraint can leverage photometric surface rendering and multi-view supervision to guide surface color prediction and improve rendering near the surface. Finally, we introduce a novel, loss-guided adaptive sampling method for more effective NeRF training by reducing the sampling redundancy. We show quantitatively and qualitatively that our method achieves higher representation power than prior face modeling methods in both controlled and in-the-wild settings. Code and models will be released upon publication.

Abstract:Due to the intrinsically inefficient service provisioning in traditional networks, Network Function Virtualization (NFV) keeps gaining attention from both industry and academia. By replacing the purpose-built, expensive, proprietary network equipment with software network functions consolidated on commodity hardware, NFV envisions a shift towards a more agile and open service provisioning paradigm with much lower capital expenditure (CapEx) and operational expenditure (OpEx). Nonetheless, just like any complex system, NFV platforms commonly consist of abounding software and hardware components and usually incorporate disparate design choices based on distinct motivations or use cases. This broad collection of convoluted alternatives makes it extremely arduous for network operators to make proper choices. Although numerous efforts have been devoted to investigating different aspects of NFV, none of them specifically focused on NFV platforms or attempted to explore the design space. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey on NFV platform design. Our study solely targets existing NFV platform implementations. We begin with an architectural view of the standard reference NFV platform and present our taxonomy of existing NFV platforms based on the principal purpose of design. Then we thoroughly explore the design space and elaborate on the implementation choices each platform opts for. We believe that our study gives a detailed guideline for network operators or service providers to choose or implement the most appropriate NFV platforms based on their respective requirements. Note that this report serves as a complementary document for a published IEEE TNSM paper [1]. We will periodically update this document to include the newly proposed NFV platforms and design choices.

Abstract:In this article, we show and discuss our experience in applying the flipped classroom method for teaching Conditional Random Fields in a Natural Language Processing course. We present the activities that we developed together with their relationship to a cognitive complexity model (Bloom's taxonomy). After this, we provide our own reflections and expectations of the model itself. Based on the evaluation got from students, it seems that students learn about the topic and also that the method is rewarding for some students. Additionally, we discuss some shortcomings and we propose possible solutions to them. We conclude the paper with some possible future work.

Abstract:The study on nonlinear control system has received great interest from the international research field of automatic engineering. There are currently some alternative and complementary methods used to predict the behavior of nonlinear systems and design nonlinear control systems. Among them, characteristic modeling (CM) and fuzzy dynamic modeling are two effective methods. However, there are also some deficiencies in dealing with complex nonlinear system. In order to overcome the deficiencies, a novel intelligent modeling method is proposed by combining fuzzy dynamic modeling and characteristic modeling methods. Meanwhile, the proposed method also introduces the low-level learning power of neural network into the fuzzy logic system to implement parameters identification. This novel method is called neuro-fuzzy dynamic characteristic modeling (NFDCM). The neuro-fuzzy dynamic characteristic model based overall fuzzy control law is also discussed. Meanwhile the local adaptive controller is designed through the golden section adaptive control law and feedforward control law. In addition, the stability condition for the proposed closed-loop control system is briefly analyzed. The proposed approach has been shown to be effective via an example.

Abstract:Accurate estimation such as cost estimation, quality estimation and risk analysis is a major issue in management. We propose a patent pending soft computing framework to tackle this challenging problem. Our generic framework is independent of the nature and type of estimation. It consists of neural network, fuzzy logic, and an algorithmic estimation model. We made use of the Constructive Cost Model (COCOMO), Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and Function Point Analysis as the algorithmic models and validated the accuracy of the Neuro-Fuzzy Algorithmic (NFA) Model in software cost estimation using industrial project data. Our model produces more accurate estimation than using an algorithmic model alone. We also discuss the prototypes of our tools that implement the NFA Model. We conclude with our roadmap and direction to enrich the model in tackling different estimation challenges.

Abstract:The architecture and learning procedure underlying ANFIS (adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system) is presented, which is a fuzzy inference system implemented in the framework of adaptive networks. By using a hybrid learning procedure, the proposed ANFIS can construct an input-output mapping based on both human knowledge (in the form of fuzzy if-then rules) and stipulated input-output data pairs. In the simulation, the ANFIS architecture is employed to model nonlinear functions, identify nonlinear components on-line in a control system, and predict a chaotic time series, all yielding remarkable results. Comparisons with artificial neural networks and earlier work on fuzzy modeling are listed and discussed. Other extensions of the proposed ANFIS and promising applications to automatic control and signal processing are also suggested.<>
AFNFA: an Approach to Automate NCCL Configuration Exploration.

Abstract:With the continuously increasing scale of deep neural network models, there is a clear trend towards distributed DNN model training. State-of-the-art training frameworks support this approach using collective communication libraries such as NCCL, MPI, Gloo, and Horovod. These libraries have many parameters that can be adjusted to fit different hardware environments, and these parameters can greatly impact training performance. Therefore, careful tuning of parameters for each training environment is required. However, given the large parameter space, manual exploration can be time-consuming and laborious. In this poster, we introduce AFNFA, which stands for AI For Network For AI. It is an automated program that utilizes machine learning and simulated annealing to explore NCCL parameters. Preliminary evaluation results demonstrate that compared to the default configuration, the configuration explored by AFNFA improves NCCL communication performance by 22.90%.

Abstract:Chinese FrameNet (CFN) is a scenario commonsense knowledge base (CKB) that plays an important role in research on Chinese language understanding. It is based on the theory of frame semantics and English FrameNet (FN). The CFN knowledge base contains a wealth of scenario commonsense knowledge, including frames, frame elements, and frame relations, as well as annotated instances with rich scenario-related labels on Chinese sentences and discourses. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive overview of CFN from a commonsense perspective, covering topics such as scenario commonsense representation, CFN resources, and its applications. We also summarize recent breakthroughs and identify future research directions. First, we introduce the concept of scenario commonsense, including its definitions, examples, and representation methods, with a focus on the relationship between scenario commonsense and the frame concept in CFN. In addition, we provide a comprehensive overview of CFN resources and their applications, highlighting the newly proposed frame-based discourse representation and a human-machine collaboration framework for expanding the CFN corpus. Furthermore, we explore emerging topics such as expanding the CFN resource, improving the interpretability of machine reading comprehension, and using scenario CKBs for text generation.
