Abstract:The impact of astronomical research carried out by different countries has been compared by analysing the 1000 most‐cited astronomy papers published 1991‐8 (125 from each year). 61% of the citations are to papers with first authors at institutions in the USA, 11% in the UK, 5% in Germany, 4% in Canada, 3% in Italy and 3% in France. 17% are to papers with first authors in ESO countries. The number of citations is approximately proportional to the number of IAU members in a given country. The number of citations per IAU astronomer is highest in the USA, Switzerland and the UK. Within continental Europe, the number of citations per IAU astronomer varies little from country to country, but is slightly higher in the north than in the south. The sample of 1000 papers maps regional subject preferences. 62% of the extragalactic papers in the sample were published from the USA, 15% from the UK, 23% from other countries (mainly in continental Europe). 62% of the papers on stars were also published from the USA, but the fractions from the UK and from other countries are 2% and 36% respectively. Abstract:By utilising the inbuilt citation counts from NASA's astrophysics data system (ADS) I derive how many citations refereed articles receive as a function of time since publication. After five years, one paper in a hundred has accumulated 91 or more citations, a figure which rises to 145 citations after ten years. By adding up the number of citations active researchers have received over the past five years I have estimated their relative impact upon the field both for raw citations and citations weighted by the number of authors per paper.

Abstract:(Abridged) Typically large telescope construction and operation costs scale up faster than their collecting area. This slows scientific progress, making it expensive and complicated to increase telescope size. A metric that represents the capability of an imaging survey telescopes, and that captures a wide range of science objectives, is the telescope grasp -- the amount of volume of space in which a standard candle is detectable per unit time. We provide an analytic expression for the grasp, and also show that in the background-dominated noise limit, the optimal exposure time is three times the dead time. We introduce a related metric we call the information-content grasp, which summarizes the variance of all sources observed by the telescope per unit time. For seeing-dominated sky surveys, in terms of grasp, etendue, or collecting-area optimization, recent technological advancements make it more cost effective to construct multiple small telescopes rather than a single large telescope with a similar grasp or etendue. Among these key advancements are the availability of large-format back-side illuminated CMOS detectors with <4 micron pixels, well suited to sample standard seeing conditions given typical focal lengths of small fast telescopes. We also discuss the possible use of multiple small telescopes for spectroscopy. We argue that if all the obstacles to implementing cost-effective wide-field imaging and multi-object spectrographs using multiple small telescopes are removed, then the motivation to build new single large-aperture (>1m) visible-light telescopes which are seeing-dominated, will be weakened. These ideas have led to the concept of the, currently under construction, Large-Array Survey Telescope (LAST).
Collaboration Size and Citation Impact in Big Data Research.

Abstract:With rapid and widespread application, Big Data has attracted growing attention from academic communities. Concerning the importance of collaboration in scientific research, the current study focused on profiles of collaboration types and size, as well as their relations with citation impact based on publications indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) from 2003 to 2017, so as to provide decision-making basis for optimizing collaboration options. Results show that collaborated publications, as well as collaboration size (i.e., number of authors, institutions and countries) in Big Data have grown substantially. Within-institutional collaboration plays a main role, while international collaboration takes relatively low but rising share. Citation impact is dependent on collaboration types with international collaboration the most efficient, followed by domestic one. None-collaboration receives the least citations. Team size increases over time in general, and is positively related with citation impact, and such phenomenon exists in different collaboration types. Among all the research fields involved, Mathematics and Computer Science is the main contributor in publications and also benefits the most in collaboration despite of its limited team size.

Abstract:Although scientometricians have focused on the strength of the citation impact of scientific publications, only a few have paid special attention to the width of the citation impact. In this article, we aim to understand the width by establishing our empirical study on a previously built structure, namely ego-centered citation networks (ECCNs). We remove the direct links to the focal publication and only retain the other edges in the network. Particularly, we examine the number and the size of the connected components of sub-networks of ECCNs in the whole Web of Science database. We find that the number and size of the connected components increase as the number of citations of publications rises, regardless of discipline, and that they are greater in recent publications than in older ones. We also observe that there are some differences in terms of the number/size of the connected components; particularly, the number/size of connected components for publications in Arts and Humanities is more "special" compared with other disciplines, and Natural Sciences tends to have greater values. These details are indicative in terms of the specializations of academia. Moreover, the findings have far-reaching implications on research assessment practices and literature searching.
An Overview of Extremely Large Telescopes Projects

Abstract:IAU Symposium 232 allows a snapshot of ELTs at a stage when design work in several critical mass projects has been seriously underway for two to three years. The status and som eof the main initial design choices are reviewed for the North American Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) and the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) projects and the European Euro50 and the Overwhelmingly Large (OWL) projects. All the projects are drawing from the same "basket" of science requirements, although each project has somewhat different ambitions. The role of the project offices in creating the balance between project scope, timeline and cost, the "iron triangle" of project management, is emphasized with the OWL project providing a striking demonstration at this meeting. There is a reasonable case that the very broad range of science would be most effectively undertaken on several complementary telescopes.

The Science Impact of Astronomy PhD Granting Departments in the United States

Abstract:The scientific impact of the research of 36 astronomy PhD granting departments is measured and ranked here. Because of the complex nature of Universities, this study looks at the Universities in two ways; first analyzing the impact of the published work over a 10 year period of the Department which grants the PhD and; second, looking at the impact of the published work as a whole including Laboratories, Centers, and Facilities. The Universities considered in the study are drawn from the 1992 NRC study on Programs of Research, Doctorate in Astrophysics and Astronomy with three Universities added. Johns Hopkins, Michigan State, and Northwestern all host substantial astronomical research within their Departments of Physics and Astronomy and so are included here. The first method of measuring impact concentrates on tenured and tenured track faculty, with the top quartile being 1. Caltech, 2. UC Santa Cruz, 3. Princeton, 4. Harvard, 5. U Colorado, Boulder, 6. SUNY, Stony Brook, 7. Johns Hopkins, 8. Penn State, and 9. U Michigan, Ann Arbor. The second method additionally includes "soft money" scientists in research and adjunct faculty positions, with the top quartile being 1. UC Santa Cruz, 2. Princeton, 3. Johns Hopkins 4. Penn State, 5. SUNY Stony Brook, 6. U Michigan, Ann Arbor, 7. New Mexico State, 8. UMass, Amherst, and 9. U Virginia. Both methods reveal important aspects of Universities, representing both the depth and the breadth of the science available at the University. Finally, a comparison is made of the total articles published in the 10 year period, both from the departments alone and from the larger universities. Three Universities have both impact index in the top quartile, and have more than 1000 publications in a decade; UC at Santa Cruz, Princeton, and Johns Hopkins.

Astronomy's Greatest Hits: The 100 most Cited Papers in Each Year of the First Decade of the 21st Century (2000 - 2009)

Abstract:This paper is based on the 100 most cited papers in astronomy for each year from 2000 to 2009 and from 1995 and 1990. The main findings are: The total number of authors of the top 100 articles per year has more than tripled. This is seen most strongly in papers with more than 6 authors. The yearly number of papers with 5 or fewer authors has declined over the same time period. The most highly cited papers tend to have the largest number of authors and visa versa. The distribution of normalized citation counts versus ranking is constant from year to year except for the top ranked half dozen or so papers. It is closely approximated by a power law. The papers that show the most divergence from the power law all have a high number of citations and are based on large surveys. The average page length of the top 100 papers is one and a half times that for astronomy papers in general. The same 5 journals (A&A, AJ, ApJ, ApJS, and MNRAS) account for 80 to 85% of the total citations for each year of all the journals in the category "Astronomy and Astrophysics" by ISI's Journal Citation Reports. These same 5 journals account for 77% of the 1000 most cited papers. A significant number of articles originally ranked in the top 100 for a year, drop out after 2 to 3 years and are replaced by other articles. Most of the drop-outs deal with extra-galactic astronomy; their replacements deal with non-extra-galactic topics. Indicators of internet access to astronomical web sites such as data archives and journal repositories show increases of between factors of three and ten or more I propose that there are close complementarities between the communication capabilities that internet usage enables and the strong growth in numbers of authors of the most highly cited papers.

Highly Cited Antarctic Articles Using Science Citation Index Expanded: a Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract:This study aimed to identify and analyze the characteristics of the highly cited articles in Antarctic field using Science Citation Index Expanded from 1900 to 2012. Articles that have been cited more than 100 times since publication to 2012 were assessed. The analyzed aspects covered distribution of annual production, annual citations, journals, categories, countries/territories, institutions, authors, and research focuses and trends by words in title, author keywords, and KeyWords Plus. A total of 852 highly cited articles were published from 1959 to 2011, cited a mean number of 181 citations per article. Two famous journals: Nature and Science led 184 journals. Typically, the exploration of Antarctic needs multidisciplinary science, also involving more collaboration. The USA with the greatest manpower, took the lead position among 48 countries, while National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the USA and British Antarctic Survey of the UK were the two most productive institutions. European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica Community was active in Antarctic research. Moreover, the comprehensive analysis of keywords revealed that sea ice, Southern Ocean, climate change, and ozone depletion were recent focuses and would receive more citations in the near future. In addition, citations in the first 3 years after publication (TC3), in 2012 (C2012), and since publication to 2012 (TC2012), and citations per year of each article (TCPY) were used to characterize the citation patterns and citation life of most cited articles.
The Extremely Large Telescope

Abstract:Extremely large telescopes (ELTs) are considered worldwide to be one of the highest priorities in ground-based astronomy. The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is developing an ELT that will have a 39 m main mirror and will be the largest visible and infrared light telescope in the world. The ELT will be equipped with a lineup of cutting-edge instruments, designed to cover a wide range of scientific possibilities. The leap forwards with the ELT can lead to a paradigm shift in our perception of the Universe, much as Galileo's telescope did 400 years ago. We illustrate here the various components of the ELT, including the dome and main structure, the five mirrors, and the telescope systems. We then describe the ELT instrumentation and some of the astronomical topics it will address. We then conclude by examining the synergies with other astronomical facilities.

Scientific Impact of novel Instrumentation: the Case of MUSE

Abstract:In the process of transforming science cases into a viable and affordable design for a novel instrument, there is the problem of how to gauge their scientific impact, especially when they end up in competing top level requirements that can be incompatible with each other. This research note presents a case study for scientific impact of the integral field spectrograph MUSE in terms of number of refereed publications from 2014 to 2024 as a figure of merit, broken down by different research areas. The analysis is based on the Basic ESO Publication Statistics service (BEPS) and NASA's Astrophysics Data System (ADS).

Abstract:The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) is conceived as an 8.4-m telescope with CCD or CMOS focal plane covering most of a field 0.6 m in diameter, the latter exceeding the size of the largest photographic plates ever used in astronomy. The telescope design is driven by the desire to cover much of the accessible sky to faint magnitudes on a timescale of $\sim$ one night, with major science drivers the search for near Earth-orbit asteroids down to a diameter of 300 m, discovering supernovae to z $\sim 2$, and mass tomography of the Universe via gravitational weak lensing. Here the suitability of this facility for more ``traditional'' variable star research is investigated.
The Impact of LSST on Asymptotic Giant Branch Star Research

Abstract:(Abridged) The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) is currently by far the most ambitious proposed ground-based optical survey. The main science themes that drive the LSST system design are Dark Energy and Matter, the Solar System Inventory, Transient Optical Sky and the Milky Way Mapping. The LSST system, with its 8.4m telescope and 3,200 Megapixel camera, will be sited at Cerro Pachon in northern Chile, with the first light scheduled for 2013. In a continuous observing campaign, LSST will cover the entire available sky every three nights in two photometric bands to a depth of V=25 per visit (two 15 second exposures), with exquisitely accurate astrometry and photometry. Over the proposed survey lifetime of 10 years, each sky location would be observed about 1000 times, with the total exposure time of 8 hours distributed over six broad photometric bandpasses (ugrizY). This campaign will open a movie-like window on objects that change brightness, or move, on timescales ranging from 10 seconds to 10 years. The survey will have a data rate of about 30 TB/night, and will collect over 60 PB of data over its lifetime, resulting in an incredibly rich and extensive public archive that will be a treasure trove for breakthroughs in many areas of astronomy. I describe how this archive will impact the AGB star research and speculate how the system could be further optimized by utilizing narrow-band TiO and CN filters.

Abstract:Observatories need to measure and evaluate the scientific output and overall impact of their facilities. An observatory bibliography consists of the papers published using that observatory's data, typically gathered by searching the major journals for relevant keywords. Recently, the volume of literature and methods by which the publications pool is evaluated has increased. Efficient and standardized procedures are necessary to assign meaningful metadata; enable user-friendly retrieval; and provide the opportunity to derive reports, statistics, and visualizations to impart a deeper understanding of the research output. In 2021, a group of observatory bibliographers from around the world convened online to continue the discussions presented in Lagerstrom (2015). We worked to extract general guidelines from our experiences, techniques, and lessons learnt. The paper explores the development, application, and current status of telescope bibliographies and future trends. This paper briefly describes the methodologies employed in constructing databases, along with the various bibliometric techniques used to analyze and interpret them. We explain reasons for non-standardization and why it is essential for each observatory to identify metadata and metrics that are meaningful for them; caution the (over-)use of comparisons among facilities that are, ultimately, not comparable through bibliometrics; and highlight the benefits of telescope bibliographies, both for researchers within the astronomical community and for stakeholders beyond the specific observatories. There is tremendous diversity in the ways bibliographers track publications and maintain databases, due to parameters such as resources, type of observatory, historical practices, and reporting requirements to funders and outside agencies. However, there are also common sets of Best Practices.

How long should an astronomical paper be to increase its Impact?

Abstract:Naively, one would expect longer papers to have larger impact (i.e., to be cited more). I tested this expectation by selecting all (~30,000) refereed papers from A&A, AJ, ApJ and MNRAS published between 2000 and 2004. These particular years were chosen so papers analyzed would not be too "fresh", but at the same time length of each article could be obtained via ADS. I find that indeed longer papers published in these four major astronomy journals are on average cited more, with a median number of citations increasing from 6 for articles 2-3 pages long to about 50 for articles ~50 pages long. I do however observe a significant "Letters effect", i.e. ApJ and A&A articles 4 pages long are cited more than articles 5-10 pages long. Also, the very few longest (>80 pages) papers are actually cited less than somewhat shorter papers. For individual journals, median citations per paper increase from 11 for ~9,300 A&A papers to 14 for ~5,300 MNRAS papers, 16 for ~2,550 AJ papers, and 20 for ~12,850 ApJ papers (including ApJ Letters and Supplement). I conclude with some semi-humorous career advice, directed especially at first-year graduate students.

Abstract:We present a citation pattern analysis between astronomical papers and 13 other disciplines, based on the arXiv database over the past decade (2010–2020). We analyze 12,600 astronomical papers citing over 14,531 unique publications outside astronomy. Two striking patterns are unraveled. First, general relativity recently became the most cited field by astronomers, a trend highly correlated with the discovery of gravitational waves. Second, the fast growth of referenced papers in computer science and statistics, the first with a notable 15 fold increase since 2015. Such findings confirm the critical role of interdisciplinary efforts involving astronomy, statistics, and computer science in recent astronomical research.

Abstract:Space-based and ground-based telescopes have extensively documented the impact of satellites on astronomical observations. With the proliferation of satellite mega-constellation programs, their influence on astronomical observations has become undeniable. It is crucial to quantify the impact of satellites on telescopes. To address this need, we have enhanced the circular orbit model for satellites and introduced a methodology based on two-line element (TLE) orbit data. This involves constructing a satellite probability distribution model to evaluate the impact of satellites on telescopes. Using our method, we assessed the satellite impact on global observatories. The results indicate that the regions most severely affected by satellite interference currently are those near the equator, with latitudes around 50 and 80 degrees experiencing the most significant impact from low Earth orbit satellites. Furthermore, we validated the reliability of our method using imaging data obtained from the focal surface acquisition camera of the LAMOST telescope.

Abstract:The question of citation behavior has always intrigued scientists from various disciplines. While general citation patterns have been widely studied in the literature we develop the notion of citation projection graphs by investigating the citations among the publications that a given paper cites. We investigate how patterns of citations vary between various scientific disciplines and how such patterns reflect the scientific impact of the paper. We find that idiosyncratic citation patterns are characteristic for low impact papers; while narrow, discipline-focused citation patterns are common for medium impact papers. Our results show that crossing-community, or bridging citation patters are high risk and high reward since such patterns are characteristic for both low and high impact papers. Last, we observe that recently citation networks are trending toward more bridging and interdisciplinary forms.

Abstract:The year 2009 has been declared the International Year of Astronomy by the United Nations,to mark the 400th anniversary of the first observation of celestial bodies by means of a telescope,conducted by Galileo Galilei.In this paper the author identifies four milestones in the development of telescopes and relevant technologies during the past 400 years,then discusses each milestone and its subsequent developments.The paper proceeds to describe the telescopes that have been completed in China as well as those that are being developed.The author supports the development of three new telescope projects in China in the next decade.The author offers a summary of the achievements in astronomy over the past 400 years in terms of their close relationship to fundamental theories of astronomy and physics.For the future,the author believes that dark matter and dark energy,especially dark energy,should be the most important field of research.
