Abstract:FeNiCu-based composite catalysis proves to be an effective strategy for enhancing the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2. Two catalysts, (Cu0.2Ni0.8) O/NiFe2O4 and FeNi3/Fe4Cu3, are successfully synthesized and doped into MgH2 to improve its hydrogen storage capability. Experimental results demonstrate that MgH2 + 5 wt % (Cu0.2Ni0.8)O/NiFe2O4 (MgH2 + 5 A) and MgH2 + 5 wt% FeNi3/Fe4Cu3 (MgH2 + 5B) composites desorption at 171 degrees C and 178 degrees C, respectively, which is 100 degrees C lower than that of ball-milled MgH2. Under conditions of 150 degrees C and 3 MPa, MgH2 + 5 A can absorb 6.02 wt% H2 in just one minute. MgH2 + 5B, at 225/325 degrees C, exhibits hydrogen absorption/desorption exceeding 7 wt% H2 for 1 h. The synergistic effect of in situ formed Mg2Ni and Fe positively impacts the hydrogen storage behavior of MgH2. The introduced interface offers numerous lowenergy barrier H-diffusion channels, resulting in accelerated release and hydrogen absorption. Additionally, Cu4O3 dispersed on the surface of the matrix particles maintains its valence during the process of hydrogen absorption/desorption. This property can facilitate the conversion of Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4 into a "hydrogen pump". This study provides an experimental basis and new insights for designing highly efficient catalysts for Mg-based hydrogen storage materials.
Facile Synthesized Fe Nanosheets As Superior Active Catalyst for Hydrogen Storage in MgH2

Abstract:Reversible hydrogen storage in MgH2 under mild conditions is a promising way for the realization of "Hydrogen Economy", in which the development of cheap and highly efficient catalysts is the major challenge. Herein, A two-dimensional layered Fe is prepared via a facile wet-chemical ball milling method and has been confirmed to greatly enhance the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2. Minor addition of 5 wt% Fe nanosheets to MgH2 decreases the onset desorption temperature to 182.1 degrees C and enables a quick release of 5.44 wt% H-2 within 10 min at 300 degrees C. Besides, the dehydrogenated sample takes up 6 wt% H-2 in 10 min under a hydrogen pressure of 3.2 MPa at 200 degrees C. With the doping of Fe nano sheets, the apparent activation energy of the dehydrogenation reaction for MgH2 is reduced to 40.7 +/- 1.0 kJ mol(-1). Further ab initio calculations reveal that the presence of Fe extends the Mg-H bond length and reduces its bond strength. We believe that this work would shed light on designing plain metal for catalysis in the area of hydrogen storage and other energy-related issues. (C) 2019 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Highly Dispersed Metal Nanoparticles on TiO2 Acted As Nano Redox Reactor and Its Synergistic Catalysis on the Hydrogen Storage Properties of Magnesium Hydride

Abstract:In this paper, we have synthesized highly dispersed Co metal nanoparticles with the particle size about 5-10 nm on TiO2 (25-50 nm) for the first time through an extremely facile solvothermal method. It is supposed that the synthesized Co/TiO2 composite can combine the catalytic advantage of both Co and TiO2, exhibiting the superior catalytic effect on the hydrogen de/absorption properties of MgH2. The experimental data confirmed the above supposition and demonstrated that Co/TiO2 additive highly enhances the hydrogen de/absorption kinetics of MgH2 as compared to separate Co or TiO2 additive. Specifically, the MgH2-Co/TiO2 composite begins to desorb hydrogen at about 190 degrees C with a low apparent activation energy of 77 kJ/mol. Besides, the MgH2-Co/TiO2 composite has a desorption peak temperature of 235.2 degrees C, which is 53.2, 94.2 and 132.2 degrees C lower than that of MgH2-TiO2 (288.4 degrees C), MgH2-Co (329.4 degrees C) and ball-milled MgH2 (367.4 degrees C). Moreover, MgH2-Co/TiO2 composite also exhibits low temperature rehydrogenation properties, which can absorb 6.07, 5.56 and 4.24 wt% H-2 within 10 min at the temperature of 165, 130 and 100 degrees C, respectively. It is supposed that such excellent hydrogen desorption properties and low desorption energy barrier of MgH2-Co/TiO2 composite are mainly ascribed to the novel synergistic catalytic effects of Co and TiO2. Herein, we propose a novel catalytic mechanism and think that Co/TiO2 acts as "nano redox reactor", which can facilitate the dissociation and recombination process of hydrogen, thus reducing the reaction energy barrier and enhancing the de/rehydrogenation of MgH2. The Remarkably Improved Hydrogen Storage Performance of MgH2by the Synergetic Effect of an FeNi/rGO Nanocomposite

Abstract:Magnesium hydride (MgH2) has been considered as a promising hydrogen storage material for buildings that are powered by hydrogen energy, but its practical application is hampered by poor kinetics and unstable thermodynamics. Herein, we describe a feasible method for preparing FeNi nanoparticles dispersed on reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (FeNi/rGO), and we confirmed that excellent catalytic effects increased the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2. 5 wt% FeNi/rGO-modified MgH2 began to release hydrogen at 230 °C and liberated 6.5 wt% H2 within 10 min at 300 °C. As for the hydrogenation process, the dehydrogenated sample absorbed 5.4 wt% H2 within 20 min at 125 °C under a hydrogen pressure of 32 bar. More importantly, a hydrogen capacity of 6.9 wt% was maintained after 50 cycles without compromising the kinetics during each cycle. A unique catalytic mechanism promoted synergetic effects between the in situ-formed Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4, Fe, and rGO that efficiently promoted hydrogen dissociation and diffusion along the Mg/MgH2 interface, anchored the catalyst, and prevented MgH2 from aggregation and growth.
Excellent Synergistic Catalytic Mechanism of In-Situ Formed Nanosized Mg2Ni and Multiple Valence Titanium for Improved Hydrogen Desorption Properties of Magnesium Hydride

Abstract:Nowadays, catalytic doping has been regarded as one of the most promising and effective methods to improve the sluggish kinetics of magnesium hydride (MgH2). Herein, we synthesized Ni/TiO2 nanocomposite with the particle sizes about 20 nm by an extremely facile solvothermal method. Then, the Ni/TiO2 nanocomposite was doped into MgH2 to enhance its reversible hydrogen storage properties. A remarkably enhancement of de/rehydrogenation kinetics of MgH2 can be achieved by doped with Ni/TiO2 nanocomposite, compared to that solely doped with Ni or TiO2 nanoparticles. The hydrogen desorption peak temperature of MgH2-Ni/TiO2 is 232 degrees C, which is 135.4 degrees C lower than that of ball-milled MgH2 (367.4 degrees C). Moreover, the MgH2-Ni/TiO2 can desorb 6.5 wt% H-2 within 7 min at 265 degrees C and absorb similar to 5 wt% H-2 within 10 min at 100 degrees C. In particular, the apparent activation energy of MgH2-Ni/TiO2 is obviously decreased from 160.5 kJ/mol (ball-milled MgH2) to 43.7 +/- 1.5 kJ/mol. Based on the analyses of microstructure evolution, it is proved that metallic Ni particles can react with Mg easily to form fine Mg2Ni particles after dehydrogenation, and the in-situ formed Mg2Ni will transform into Mg2NiH4 in the subsequent rehydrogenation process. The significantly improved hydrogen absorption/desorption properties of MgH2-Ni/TiO2 can be ascribed to the synergistic catalytic effect of reversible transformation of Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4 which act as "hydrogen pump", and the multiple valence titanium compounds (Ti4+/3+/2+) which promote the electrons transfer of MgH2/Mg. Achieving superior hydrogen storage properties of MgH<sub>2</sub> by the effect of TiFe and carbon nanotubes

Abstract:Multiple catalysts have exhibited high activity on improving the hydrogen storage performance of magnesium hydride. Herein, TiFe as a superior catalyst was successfully prepared, and then doped into MgH2 via ball milling to improve the de/rehydrogenation properties of MgH2 at low temperatures. Compared with as-prepared MgH2, the onset desorption temperature could be reduced to 175 degrees C after adding 15 wt%-TiFe to MgH2. Furthermore, the 10 wt%-TiFe doped MgH2 released approximately 6.5 wt% H2 within 10 min at 300 degrees C, and 5.3 wt% H2 could be rapidly absorbed at low temperature of 125 degrees C under hydrogen pressure of 3 MPa. Moreover, the additional doping of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) evenly distributed on the surface of MgH2 particles, enabling the MgH2 + 10 wt%-TiFe + 5 wt%-CNTs composite with outstanding cycling performance. The activation energy of hydrogenation for MgH2 was reduced from 72.5 +/- 2.7 kJ/mol to 60.7 +/- 8.0 kJ/mol after doping with TiFe and CNTs. However, the addition of TiFe and CNTs had limited influence on the thermodynamic properties of MgH2. The analysis of XRD, TEM, SEM and EDS indicated that uniformly distributed TiFe and CNTs served as active catalytic unit and aggregation preventer on enhancing the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2, respectively.
Enhanced Hydrogen Storage Properties of MgH2 by the Synergetic Catalysis of Zr0.4Ti0.6Co Nanosheets and Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Transition metal nanoparticles have shown great catalytic effect on MgH2, yet excellent cyclic stability can be attached due to the addition of carbon nanotubes. In this paper, MgH2 + 10 wt% Zr0.4Ti0.6Co/5 wt% Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite is designed to investigate the synergistic modification of Zr0.4Ti0.6Co nanosheets and carbon nanotubes on the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2. Compared with pure MgH2, the initial hydrogen release temperature of MgH2 + 10 wt% Zr0.4Ti0.6Co /5 wt% CNTs composite decreases to 180 degrees C and the composite can quickly release 90% H-2 within 10 min at 300 degrees C. In addition, the completely dehydrogenated sample can absorb 3.51 wt% H-2 within 20 min under 3 Mpa hydrogen pressure at 125 degrees C. Ulteriorly, the activation energy values of dehydrogenation and rehydrogenation of MgH2 decrease to 70.5 +/- 7.8 kJ/mol and 35.8 +/- 3.8 kJ/mol on account of the presence of 10 wt% Zr0.4Ti0.6Co/5 wt% CNTs, which reasonably explains the remarkable reduction of the temperature for hydrogen sorption. Furthermore, the MgH2 + 10 wt% Zr0.4Ti0.6Co/5 wt% CNTs composite shows excellent cycling performance, indicative of potential application in practical hydrogen storage in the nearest future.
Effects of Nano-Composites (feb, FeB/CNTs) on Hydrogen Storage Properties of MgH2

Abstract:The carbon nanotubes (CNTs), the as-prepared FeB nanoparticles and the CNTs decorated with FeB nanoparticles (denoted as FeB/CNTs) are introduced respectively into MgH2 system by wet milling with cyclohexane (CYH), and results show that wet milling with CYH and adding dopants (CNTs, FeB or FeB/CNTs) both improve the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2. The MgH2-10 wt% FeB/CNTs (CYH) composite shows the best properties. Its onset dehydrogenation temperature is 196 degrees C, which is 114 degrees C lower than that of the MgH2 (without CYH). Furthermore, the hydrogen desorption activation energy of MgH2-10 wt% FeB/CNTs (CYH) is reduced to 89.7 kJ/mol. The composite starts to absorb hydrogen at temperature as low as 39 degrees C, and can take up 6.2 wt% of H-2 at 150 degrees C and 5 MPa H-2 within 10 min. The hydrogen sorption cycling measurements indicate that the kinetics of the MgH2-10 wt% FeB/CNTs (CYH) composite keeps almost stable within 20 cycles, and the hydrogen storage capacity remains at 6.02 wt% (93% of the initial capacity) after 20 cycles. It is believed that the in-situ formed Fe and B as the active species and the good thermal conductivity of CNTs help enhance the hydrogen storage properties of the MgH2.
CNTs Decorated with CoFeB As a Dopant to Remarkably Improve the Dehydrogenation/rehydrogenation Performance and Cyclic Stability of MgH2

Abstract:The chain-like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) decorated with CoFeB (CoFeB/CNTs) prepared by oxidation-reduction method is introduced into MgH2 to facilitate its hydrogen storage performance. The addition of CoFeB/CNTs enables MgH2 to start desorbing hydrogen at only 177 degrees C. Whereas pure MgH2 starts hydrogen desorption at 310 degrees C. The dehydrogenation apparent activation energy of MgH2 in CoFeB/CNTs doped-MgH2 composite is only 83.2 kJ/mol, and this is about 59.5 kJ/mol lower than that of pure MgH2. In addition, the completely dehydrogenated MgH2-10 wt% CoFeB/CNTs sample can start to absorb hydrogen at only 30 degrees C. At 150 degrees C and 5 MPa H-2, the MgH2 in CoFeB/CNTs doped-MgH2 composite can absorb 6.2 wt% H-2 in 10 min. The cycling kinetics can remain rather stable up to 20 cycles, and the hydrogen storage capacity retention rate is 98.5%. The in situ formation of Co3MgC, Fe, CoFe and B caused by the introduction of CoFeB/CNTs can provide active and nucleation sites for the dehydrogenation/rehydrogenation reactions of MgH2. Moreover, CNTs can provide hydrogen diffusion pathways while also enhancing the thermal conductivity of the sample. FeCoNiCrMo high entropy alloy nanosheets catalyzed magnesium hydride for solid-state hydrogen storage

Abstract:The catalytic effect of FeCoNiCrMo high entropy alloy nanosheets on the hydrogen storage performance of magnesium hydride (MgH2) was investigated for the first time in this paper. Experimental results demonstrated that 9wt% FeCoNiCrMo doped MgH2 started to de-hydrogenate at 200°C and discharged up to 5.89wt% hydrogen within 60 min at 325°C. The fully dehydrogenated composite could absorb 3.23wt% hydrogen in 50 min at a temperature as low as 100°C. The calculated de/hydrogenation activation energy values decreased by 44.21%/55.22% compared with MgH2, respectively. Moreover, the composite’s hydrogen capacity dropped only 0.28wt% after 20 cycles, demonstrating remarkable cycling stability. The microstructure analysis verified that the five elements, Fe, Co, Ni, Cr, and Mo, remained stable in the form of high entropy alloy during the cycling process, and synergistically serving as a catalytic union to boost the de/hydrogenation reactions of MgH2. Besides, the FeCoNiCrMo nanosheets had close contact with MgH2, providing numerous non-homogeneous activation sites and diffusion channels for the rapid transfer of hydrogen, thus obtaining a superior catalytic effect.

Abstract:Recently, transition metal oxides have been evidenced to be superior catalysts for improving the hydrogen desorption/absorption performance of MgH2. In this paper, Mn3O4 nanoparticles with a uniform size of around 10 nm were synthesized by a facile chemical method and then introduced to modify the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2. With the addition of 10 wt% Mn3O4 nanoparticles, the MgH2-Mn3O4 composite started to release hydrogen at 200 °C and approximately 6.8 wt% H2 could be released within 8 min at 300 °C. For absorption, the completely dehydrogenated sample took up 5.0 wt% H2 within 10 min under 3 MPa hydrogen even at 100 °C. Compared with pristine MgH2, the activation energy value of absorption for the MgH2 + 10 wt% Mn3O4 composite decreased from 72.5 ± 2.7 to 34.4 ± 0.9 kJ mol-1. The catalytic mechanism of Mn3O4 was also explored and discussed with solid evidence from X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) studies. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the Mg-H bonds were elongated and weakened with the doping of Mn3O4. In addition, a cycling test showed that the hydrogen storage capacity and reaction kinetics of MgH2-Mn3O4 could be favourably preserved in 20 cycles, indicative of promising applications as a solid-state hydrogen storage material in a future hydrogen society.
ZIF-67 derived Co@CNTs nanoparticles: Remarkably improved hydrogen storage properties of MgH2 and synergetic catalysis mechanism

Abstract:Transition-metal nanoparticles (NPs) can catalytically improve the hydrogen desorption/absorption kinetics of MgH2, yet this catalysis could be enhanced further by supporting NPs on carbon-based matrix materials. In this work, Co NPs with a uniform size of 10 nm loaded on carbon nanotubes (Co@CNTs) were synthesized in situ by carbonizing zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67). The novel Co@CNTs nanocatalyst was subsequently doped into MgH2 to remarkably improve its hydrogen storage properties. The MgH2-Co@CNTs starts to obviously release hydrogen at 267.8 °C, displaying complete release of hydrogen at the capacity of 6.89 wt% at 300 °C within 15 min. For absorption, the MgH2-Co@CNTs uptakes 6.15 wt% H2 at 250 °C within 2 min. Moreover, both improved hydrogen capacity and enhanced reaction kinetics of MgH2-Co@CNTs can be well preserved during the 10 cycles, which confirms the excellent cycling hydrogen storage performances. Based on XRD, TEM and EDS results, the catalytic mechanism of MgH2-Co@CNTs can be ascribed to the synergetic effects of reversible phase transformation of Mg2Co to Mg2CoH5, and physical transformation of CNTs to carbon pieces. It is demonstrated that phase transformation of Mg2Co/Mg2CoH5 can act as “hydrogen gateway” to catalytically accelerate the de/rehydrogenation kinetics of MgH2. Meanwhile, the carbon pieces coated on the surfaces of MgH2 particles not only offer diffusion channels for hydrogen atoms but also prevent aggregation of MgH2 NPs, resulting in the fast reaction rate and excellent cycling hydrogen storage properties of MgH2-Co@CNTs system.

Abstract:The introduction of the heterogeneous catalysts with high activity can significantly improve hydrogen storage performance of MgH2, therefore, in this paper, we synthesize a carbon-supported transition metal compound, FeCoS@C derivative from ZIF-67, by utilizing the in situ formed C dispersive multiphase Mg2Co, α-Fe, Co3Fe7, and MgS to implement catalysis to MgH2. Noteworthily, MgH2-FeCoS@C rapidly absorbs 6.78 wt% H2 within 60 s at 573 K and can also absorb 4.56 wt% H2 in 900 s at 473 K. Besides, the addition of FeCoS@C results in decreasing of the initial dehydrogenation temperatures of MgH2 from 620 to 550 K. The dehydrogenation activation energy of MgH2 decreases from 160.7 to 91.9 kJ mol–1. Studies show that the Mg2Co, α-Fe, and Co3Fe7 act as “hydrogen channels” to accelerate hydrogen transfer due to the presence of transition metals, and MgS with excellent catalytic effect formed from MgH2-FeCoS@C provides a strong and stable catalytic effect. Besides, the carbon skeleton obtained by the carbonization of ZIF-67 not only serves as a dispersion for the multiphase catalytic system, but also provides more active sites for the catalysts. Our study shows that the multiphase and multiscale catalytic system provides an effective strategy for improving the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2.

MoSe2 Hollow Nanospheres Decorated with FeNi3 Nanoparticles for Enhancing the Hydrogen Storage Properties of MgH2

Abstract:The FeNi3, MoSe2 and MoSe2@FeNi3 hollow nano-spheres synthesized by wet chemical method are used for the first time to improve the hydrogen storage properties of the MgH2. The results show that they all possess excellent catalytic activity in the hydrogen desorption/sorption reactions of MgH2. Because of the synergistic catalytic effect of MoSe2 and FeNi3, the MoSe2@FeNi3 has the most outstanding catalytic effect. In detail, the onset dehydrogenation temperature of MgH2 is reduced from 310 degrees C to 194 degrees C, and its maximum dehydrogenation rate is increased by 19.8 times by the introduction of 10 wt% MoSe2@FeNi3. Furthermore, the 10 wt% MoSe2@FeNi3-doped MgH2 sample, 5.8 wt% H-2 can be absorbed in 0.5 min at 150 degrees C. However, the un-doped MgH2 sample hardly absorbs hydrogen under the same conditions. The onset hydrogen absorption temperature of the composite is only 73 degrees C. More importantly, it has an excellent cycling stability. These improvements are because the in situ formed MgSe, Mo, Mg2Ni and Fe can serve as active species, and they as well as their homogeneous distribution on MgH2 matrix can remain stable during dehydrogenation/hydrogenation. In addition, the presence of Mg2Ni can convert MgH2 to an easier pathway of hydrogen absorption/desorption. These help to facilitate the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2. (c) 2020 Elsevier B.V. Optimizing FeCoNiCrTi High-Entropy Alloy with Hydrogen Pumping Effect to Boost De/hydrogenation Performance of Magnesium Hydride

Abstract:The exploration of efficient,long-lived and cost-effective transition metal catalysts is highly desirable for the practical hydrogen storage of magnesium hydride（MgH 2 ） in sustainable energy devices.Herein,FeCoNiCrTi high-entropy alloy（HEA） nanosheets were prepared via a facile wet chemical ball milling strategy and they were introduced into MgH 2 to boost the hydrogen storage performance.The refined HEA exhibited superior catalytic activity on MgH 2 .In contrast to additive-free MgH 2 ,the initial desorption temperature of the constructed MgH 2 -HEA composite was reduced from 330.0 to 198.5℃ and a remarkable 51% reduction in the dehydrogenation activation energy was achieved.Besides,the MgH 2 -HEA composite only required one-twentieth time of that consumed by pure MgH 2 to absorb 5.0 wt% of H 2 at 225℃.The synergy between the "hydrogen pumping" effect of Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 and Mg 2 Co/Mg 2 CoH 5 couples,as well as the good dispersion of Fe,Cr and Ti on the surface of MgH 2 contributed to the enhanced de/hydrogenation performance of the MgH 2 -HEA composites.This study furnishes important steering for the design and fabrication of multiple transition metal catalysts and may push the commercial application of magnesium-based hydrides one step forward.
Carbon composite support improving catalytic effect of NbC nanoparticles on the low-temperature hydrogen storage performance of MgH2

Abstract:Ultrafine carbon-based transition metal compounds have been widely investigated as efficient catalysts for enhancing the hydrogen storage performance of magnesium hydride. In this work, the carbon ther-mal shock method is applied to synthesize the ultrafine carbon-encapsulated NbC nanoparticles with an average grain size of 17.3 nm. The MgH2 -10 wt% NbC/C composites show excellent low-temperature hy-drogen storage performance with the onset dehydrogenation temperature of 196.1 degrees C, which is 92.2 degrees C and 98 degrees C lower than that of MgH2 -10 wt% NbC and undoped MgH2, respectively. Specifically, MgH2 -10 wt% NbC/C can absorb 6.71 wt% H2 at 100 degrees C within 30 min around and retain almost 100% reversible hydrogen desorption capacity after 10 cycles. For the catalytic mechanism, the electron transfer process between multi-valence Nb cations of in-situ formed NbHx and Mg, H atoms can greatly improve the cyclic de/rehydrogenation kinetics of MgH2-NbC/C. Besides, the enhancement of dehydrogenation kinetics can also be ascribed to MgH2 particle refinement by NbC nanoparticles, and destabilization of the Mg-H bond caused by carbon substrate. This investigation not only proves that carbon-encapsulated NbC nanoparti-cles can greatly enhance the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2 but provides an idea of preparing carbon-based transition metal carbides as effective catalysts for magnesium-based hydrogen storage ma-terials.(c) 2023 Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of The editorial office of Journal of Materials Science & Technology.

Abstract:The synthesis of trimesic acid-Ni/Fe based metal organic frameworks (TAM-Fe MOF and TAM-Ni MOF) at room temperature, followed by doping their derivatives into MgH 2 system via mechanical ball milling, has shown promising results in enhancing hydrogen storage performance. Both monometallic and bimetallic catalysts loaded with carbon have promoted the kinetics of the MgH 2 /Mg system, with the latter exhibiting superior catalytic performance. The composite MgH 2 + 10 wt% TM/C (TM = Fe, Ni) demonstrates an initial hydrogen desorption temperature of 194 °C and rapid absorption of 6.2 wt% H 2 within 60 s at 150 °C, along with absorbing 5.7 wt% H 2 within 1 h at 100 °C. Complete hydrogen desorption occurs at 300 °C, with an activation energy (E α ) for hydrogen desorption process is 77.3 kJ mol −1 . Mechanistic studies reveal that in-situ generated Fe, Mg 2 Ni, and Mg 2 NiH 4 are the actual catalytic active substances, exhibiting synergistic effects and providing more active sites, with Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 acting as a "hydrogen pump". Additionally, the carbon loaded transition metal particles facilitate hydrogen diffusion and inhibit the aggregation of MgH 2 /Mg particles, making this approach cost-effective and viable for hydrogen storage catalysis applications.

Abstract:Highlights • A novel cost-effective approach of nanosized NiCoFeCuMg HEA@C catalysts was proposed. • MgH 2 +NiCoFeCuMg@C composite has excellent hydrogen absorption/desorption performances. • The in-situ formed Mg 2 Ni(Cu)/Mg 2 Ni(Cu)H 4 and Co 3 Fe 7 act as "hydrogen channels" to accelerate hydrogen transfer. • The carbon materials greatly dispersed the hydrogen storage system, contributing to the excellent cycling stability of the composite. High entropy alloy (HEA) based materials have been extensively investigated as viable catalysts in hydrogen storage for their unique properties. Herein, we demonstrate a relatively mild synthesis strategy for constructing carbon-supported by NiCoFeCuMg HEA (NiCoFeCuMg@C) nanocatalysts by utilizing polymetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as precursors. The incorporation of prepared catalysts into MgH 2 greatly improved the hydrogen storage performance: the MgH 2 +NiCoFeCuMg@C composite can rapidly desorb 6.01 wt% H 2 at 325°C, and the initial dehydrogenation temperature decreased to 167.2 °C, nearly 163.8°C lower than that of the pure MgH 2 . Besides, the composite exhibits a fairly stable reversible capacity with 97% capacity retention after 20 cycles. Most importantly, ex -situ structural characterization reveals that the synergistic effects of the "hydrogen pump" role of Mg 2 Ni(Cu)/Mg 2 Ni(Cu)H 4 and "hydrogen gateway" role of Co 3 Fe 7 , as well as the excellent dispersion function of carbon material, contribute to the outstanding hydrogen storage properties of the MgH 2 +NiCoFeCuMg@C composite. This study provides valuable insights into the performance improvement of carbon-supported HEA catalysts in modification of MgH 2 . Graphical abstract We present a novel approach for the synthesis of carbon-supported NiCoFeCuMg high-entropy alloy nanocatalysts via a simple room temperature precipitation route followed by pyrolysis. The resulting material exhibits remarkable catalytic potential as a hydrogen storage kinetics enhancer for MgH 2 . Experimental analyses reveal that the in-situ formed Mg 2 Ni(Cu)/Mg 2 Ni(Cu)H 4 and Co 3 Fe 7 , which act as efficient "hydrogen channels", facilitating rapid hydrogen transfer and thereby accelerating dehydrogenation kinetics while concurrently mitigating thermodynamic barriers of MgH 2 . Abstract:The low-cost, easily prepared metal Mg hydrogen storage materials are replacing Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) as an attractive technology in energy storage applications. But the high hydrogen desorption temperature and sluggish hydrogen desorption kinetics behaviors hamper the application of Mg. Herein, Fe–Ni catalyst decorated carbon structure and three-dimensional graphene (3DG) as-prepared are incorporated into Mg powders by ball milling to improve the hydrogen storage performance. Mg 2 NiH 4 produced by the reaction of MgH 2 and Ni possesses a lower dehydrogenation enthalpy value than that of MgH 2 . Furthermore, carbon structure and 3DG provide more loading sites for metal particles and more channels for hydrogen diffusion. Consequently, the Mg+10 wt % FeNi@3DG composite can absorb 6.7 wt % H 2 in 300 s (320 °C, 50 atm H 2 ) and desorb 6.5 wt % in 180 s (320 °C, 0.5 atm H 2 pressure) after the first hydrogenation/dehydrogenation process. In addition, the composite maintains a high hydrogen storage capacity after 6 cycles, demonstrating outstanding application prospects.
