Abstract:FeNiCu-based composite catalysis proves to be an effective strategy for enhancing the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2. Two catalysts, (Cu0.2Ni0.8) O/NiFe2O4 and FeNi3/Fe4Cu3, are successfully synthesized and doped into MgH2 to improve its hydrogen storage capability. Experimental results demonstrate that MgH2 + 5 wt % (Cu0.2Ni0.8)O/NiFe2O4 (MgH2 + 5 A) and MgH2 + 5 wt% FeNi3/Fe4Cu3 (MgH2 + 5B) composites desorption at 171 degrees C and 178 degrees C, respectively, which is 100 degrees C lower than that of ball-milled MgH2. Under conditions of 150 degrees C and 3 MPa, MgH2 + 5 A can absorb 6.02 wt% H2 in just one minute. MgH2 + 5B, at 225/325 degrees C, exhibits hydrogen absorption/desorption exceeding 7 wt% H2 for 1 h. The synergistic effect of in situ formed Mg2Ni and Fe positively impacts the hydrogen storage behavior of MgH2. The introduced interface offers numerous lowenergy barrier H-diffusion channels, resulting in accelerated release and hydrogen absorption. Additionally, Cu4O3 dispersed on the surface of the matrix particles maintains its valence during the process of hydrogen absorption/desorption. This property can facilitate the conversion of Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4 into a "hydrogen pump". This study provides an experimental basis and new insights for designing highly efficient catalysts for Mg-based hydrogen storage materials.
Excellent Synergistic Catalytic Mechanism of In-Situ Formed Nanosized Mg2Ni and Multiple Valence Titanium for Improved Hydrogen Desorption Properties of Magnesium Hydride

Abstract:Nowadays, catalytic doping has been regarded as one of the most promising and effective methods to improve the sluggish kinetics of magnesium hydride (MgH2). Herein, we synthesized Ni/TiO2 nanocomposite with the particle sizes about 20 nm by an extremely facile solvothermal method. Then, the Ni/TiO2 nanocomposite was doped into MgH2 to enhance its reversible hydrogen storage properties. A remarkably enhancement of de/rehydrogenation kinetics of MgH2 can be achieved by doped with Ni/TiO2 nanocomposite, compared to that solely doped with Ni or TiO2 nanoparticles. The hydrogen desorption peak temperature of MgH2-Ni/TiO2 is 232 degrees C, which is 135.4 degrees C lower than that of ball-milled MgH2 (367.4 degrees C). Moreover, the MgH2-Ni/TiO2 can desorb 6.5 wt% H-2 within 7 min at 265 degrees C and absorb similar to 5 wt% H-2 within 10 min at 100 degrees C. In particular, the apparent activation energy of MgH2-Ni/TiO2 is obviously decreased from 160.5 kJ/mol (ball-milled MgH2) to 43.7 +/- 1.5 kJ/mol. Based on the analyses of microstructure evolution, it is proved that metallic Ni particles can react with Mg easily to form fine Mg2Ni particles after dehydrogenation, and the in-situ formed Mg2Ni will transform into Mg2NiH4 in the subsequent rehydrogenation process. The significantly improved hydrogen absorption/desorption properties of MgH2-Ni/TiO2 can be ascribed to the synergistic catalytic effect of reversible transformation of Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4 which act as "hydrogen pump", and the multiple valence titanium compounds (Ti4+/3+/2+) which promote the electrons transfer of MgH2/Mg. Facile Synthesized Fe Nanosheets As Superior Active Catalyst for Hydrogen Storage in MgH2

Abstract:Reversible hydrogen storage in MgH2 under mild conditions is a promising way for the realization of "Hydrogen Economy", in which the development of cheap and highly efficient catalysts is the major challenge. Herein, A two-dimensional layered Fe is prepared via a facile wet-chemical ball milling method and has been confirmed to greatly enhance the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2. Minor addition of 5 wt% Fe nanosheets to MgH2 decreases the onset desorption temperature to 182.1 degrees C and enables a quick release of 5.44 wt% H-2 within 10 min at 300 degrees C. Besides, the dehydrogenated sample takes up 6 wt% H-2 in 10 min under a hydrogen pressure of 3.2 MPa at 200 degrees C. With the doping of Fe nano sheets, the apparent activation energy of the dehydrogenation reaction for MgH2 is reduced to 40.7 +/- 1.0 kJ mol(-1). Further ab initio calculations reveal that the presence of Fe extends the Mg-H bond length and reduces its bond strength. We believe that this work would shed light on designing plain metal for catalysis in the area of hydrogen storage and other energy-related issues. (C) 2019 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Achieving superior hydrogen storage properties of MgH<sub>2</sub> by the effect of TiFe and carbon nanotubes

Abstract:Multiple catalysts have exhibited high activity on improving the hydrogen storage performance of magnesium hydride. Herein, TiFe as a superior catalyst was successfully prepared, and then doped into MgH2 via ball milling to improve the de/rehydrogenation properties of MgH2 at low temperatures. Compared with as-prepared MgH2, the onset desorption temperature could be reduced to 175 degrees C after adding 15 wt%-TiFe to MgH2. Furthermore, the 10 wt%-TiFe doped MgH2 released approximately 6.5 wt% H2 within 10 min at 300 degrees C, and 5.3 wt% H2 could be rapidly absorbed at low temperature of 125 degrees C under hydrogen pressure of 3 MPa. Moreover, the additional doping of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) evenly distributed on the surface of MgH2 particles, enabling the MgH2 + 10 wt%-TiFe + 5 wt%-CNTs composite with outstanding cycling performance. The activation energy of hydrogenation for MgH2 was reduced from 72.5 +/- 2.7 kJ/mol to 60.7 +/- 8.0 kJ/mol after doping with TiFe and CNTs. However, the addition of TiFe and CNTs had limited influence on the thermodynamic properties of MgH2. The analysis of XRD, TEM, SEM and EDS indicated that uniformly distributed TiFe and CNTs served as active catalytic unit and aggregation preventer on enhancing the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2, respectively.
Enhanced Hydrogen Storage Properties of MgH2 by the Synergetic Catalysis of Zr0.4Ti0.6Co Nanosheets and Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Transition metal nanoparticles have shown great catalytic effect on MgH2, yet excellent cyclic stability can be attached due to the addition of carbon nanotubes. In this paper, MgH2 + 10 wt% Zr0.4Ti0.6Co/5 wt% Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite is designed to investigate the synergistic modification of Zr0.4Ti0.6Co nanosheets and carbon nanotubes on the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2. Compared with pure MgH2, the initial hydrogen release temperature of MgH2 + 10 wt% Zr0.4Ti0.6Co /5 wt% CNTs composite decreases to 180 degrees C and the composite can quickly release 90% H-2 within 10 min at 300 degrees C. In addition, the completely dehydrogenated sample can absorb 3.51 wt% H-2 within 20 min under 3 Mpa hydrogen pressure at 125 degrees C. Ulteriorly, the activation energy values of dehydrogenation and rehydrogenation of MgH2 decrease to 70.5 +/- 7.8 kJ/mol and 35.8 +/- 3.8 kJ/mol on account of the presence of 10 wt% Zr0.4Ti0.6Co/5 wt% CNTs, which reasonably explains the remarkable reduction of the temperature for hydrogen sorption. Furthermore, the MgH2 + 10 wt% Zr0.4Ti0.6Co/5 wt% CNTs composite shows excellent cycling performance, indicative of potential application in practical hydrogen storage in the nearest future.
Optimizing FeCoNiCrTi High-Entropy Alloy with Hydrogen Pumping Effect to Boost De/hydrogenation Performance of Magnesium Hydride

Abstract:The exploration of efficient,long-lived and cost-effective transition metal catalysts is highly desirable for the practical hydrogen storage of magnesium hydride（MgH 2 ） in sustainable energy devices.Herein,FeCoNiCrTi high-entropy alloy（HEA） nanosheets were prepared via a facile wet chemical ball milling strategy and they were introduced into MgH 2 to boost the hydrogen storage performance.The refined HEA exhibited superior catalytic activity on MgH 2 .In contrast to additive-free MgH 2 ,the initial desorption temperature of the constructed MgH 2 -HEA composite was reduced from 330.0 to 198.5℃ and a remarkable 51% reduction in the dehydrogenation activation energy was achieved.Besides,the MgH 2 -HEA composite only required one-twentieth time of that consumed by pure MgH 2 to absorb 5.0 wt% of H 2 at 225℃.The synergy between the "hydrogen pumping" effect of Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 and Mg 2 Co/Mg 2 CoH 5 couples,as well as the good dispersion of Fe,Cr and Ti on the surface of MgH 2 contributed to the enhanced de/hydrogenation performance of the MgH 2 -HEA composites.This study furnishes important steering for the design and fabrication of multiple transition metal catalysts and may push the commercial application of magnesium-based hydrides one step forward.
Synergistic Catalysis in Monodispersed Transition Metal Oxide Nanoparticles Anchored on Amorphous Carbon for Excellent Low-Temperature Dehydrogenation of Magnesium Hydride

Abstract:Magnesium hydride (MgH2) has been considered to be one of the most promising solid-state hydrogen storage materials owing to its high hydrogen capacities, excellent reversibility and abundant source. However, the high dehydrogenation energy barrier and poor kinetics embarrass the practical application of MgH2 in fuel cell. Doping nano-catalyst is deemed to be the most effective method to improve kinetics property of hydrogen storage materials, but the nanoparticles generally suffer from agglomeration and inactivation during the cycling hydrogen storage. Here we present a promising strategy to facilely prepare a high-efficiency transition metal oxide nano-catalyst, TiO2 nanoparticles, in which monodispersed single-crystal-like TiO2 nanoparticles are wrapped with amorphous carbon. The in-situ synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles/amorphous carbon catalyst exhibit superior catalytic effect on the dehydrogenation properties of MgH2. A significant reductions of hydrogen desorption temperature (163.5 degrees C) and activation energy (69.2 kJ mol(-1)) have been obtained for the TiO2 nanoparticles/amorphous carbon catalyzed MgH2, which can be fully rehydrogenated with a reversible capacity of about 6.5 wt% at 200 degrees C within 5 min, and then completely dehydrogenated at 275 degrees C within 10 min. It is demonstrated that such significantly improved hydrogen desorption properties can be attributed to the in-situ formation of TiO2 nanoparticles, amorphous carbon and multi-valance Ti species, which play the synergistically catalytic roles in the nano-catalyst. In particular, the presence of amorphous carbon in the catalyst can not only prevent the aggregation and growth of catalyst nanoparticles, but also dramatically reduce the desorption energy value of H in MgH2, according to the density functional theory calculation. This finding opens a new venue for the synthesis of monodispersed single-crystal-like TiO2 nanoparticles/amorphous carbon catalyst with high-activity, safety, low cost, and its practical application in MgH2 and other hydrogen storage systems. The Remarkably Improved Hydrogen Storage Performance of MgH2 by the Synergetic Effect of an FeNi/rGO Nanocomposite.

Abstract:Magnesium hydride (MgH2) has been considered as a promising hydrogen storage material for buildings that are powered by hydrogen energy, but its practical application is hampered by poor kinetics and unstable thermodynamics. Herein, we describe a feasible method for preparing FeNi nanoparticles dispersed on reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (FeNi/rGO), and we confirmed that excellent catalytic effects increased the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2. 5 wt% FeNi/rGO-modified MgH2 began to release hydrogen at 230 °C and liberated 6.5 wt% H2 within 10 min at 300 °C. As for the hydrogenation process, the dehydrogenated sample absorbed 5.4 wt% H2 within 20 min at 125 °C under a hydrogen pressure of 32 bar. More importantly, a hydrogen capacity of 6.9 wt% was maintained after 50 cycles without compromising the kinetics during each cycle. A unique catalytic mechanism promoted synergetic effects between the in situ-formed Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4, Fe, and rGO that efficiently promoted hydrogen dissociation and diffusion along the Mg/MgH2 interface, anchored the catalyst, and prevented MgH2 from aggregation and growth.
Excellent Catalysis of Mn3O4 Nanoparticles on the Hydrogen Storage Properties of MgH2: an Experimental and Theoretical Study

Abstract:Recently, transition metal oxides have been evidenced to be superior catalysts for improving the hydrogen desorption/absorption performance of MgH2. In this paper, Mn3O4 nanoparticles with a uniform size of around 10 nm were synthesized by a facile chemical method and then introduced to modify the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2. With the addition of 10 wt% Mn3O4 nanoparticles, the MgH2-Mn3O4 composite started to release hydrogen at 200 °C and approximately 6.8 wt% H2 could be released within 8 min at 300 °C. For absorption, the completely dehydrogenated sample took up 5.0 wt% H2 within 10 min under 3 MPa hydrogen even at 100 °C. Compared with pristine MgH2, the activation energy value of absorption for the MgH2 + 10 wt% Mn3O4 composite decreased from 72.5 ± 2.7 to 34.4 ± 0.9 kJ mol-1. The catalytic mechanism of Mn3O4 was also explored and discussed with solid evidence from X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) studies. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the Mg-H bonds were elongated and weakened with the doping of Mn3O4. In addition, a cycling test showed that the hydrogen storage capacity and reaction kinetics of MgH2-Mn3O4 could be favourably preserved in 20 cycles, indicative of promising applications as a solid-state hydrogen storage material in a future hydrogen society.

Abstract:The catalysis of NiFe2O4 nanoparticles on the hydrogen storage performances of magnesium hydride synthesized by high-energy ball milling was studied for the first time. The H-2 storage performances and catalytic mechanism were studied by pressurecompositiontemperature (PCT), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The nonisothermal dehydrogenation results display that the initial dehydrogenation temperature of 7 mol % NiFe2O4-doped MgH2 is 191 degrees C, which is 250 degrees C lower than that of pristine MgH2. The desorption kinetics displays that the MgH2+7 mol % NiFe2O4 sample could desorb 3.79 wt % H-2 within 1 h at 300 degrees C under H-2 pressure of 0.1 MPa. The absorption kinetics displays that the MgH2+7 mol % NiFe2O4 sample could absorb 2.06 wt % H-2 within 3 h near room temperature under H-2 pressure of 4 MPa. The desorption activation energy of the MgH2+7 mol % NiFe2O4 sample is 59.6 kJ/mol, decreasing 195.3 kJ/mol as compared with pristine magnesium hydride. The reaction enthalpy and entropy of the MgH2+7 mol % NiFe2O4 sample during the dehydrogenation process are improved. The enhancement in the H-2 storage performances of MgH2 by adding NiFe2O4 nanoparticles is primarily ascribed to intermetallic Fe7Ni3 and (Fe,Ni) phases during the desorption procedure, which act as the real catalyzer in the 7 mol % NiFe2O4-doped sample.
Experimental and Theoretical Study on High Hydrogen Storage Performance of Mg(NH2)2-2LiH Composite System Driven by Nano CeO2 Oxygen Vacancies

Abstract:The magnesium based metal hydrogen storage composite system Mg(NH2)2-2LiH has a theoretical hydrogen storage capacity of 5.6 wt.% and is a promising hydrogen storage material for vehicles. However, its application is limited due to serious thermodynamic and kinetic barriers. Introducing efficient catalysts is an effective method to improve the hydrogen storage performance of Mg(NH2)2-2LiH. This article investigates for the first time the use of nano rare earth oxide CeO2 (∼44.5 nm) as an efficient modifier, achieving comprehensive regulation of the hydrogen storage performance of Mg(NH2)2-2LiH composite system through oxygen vacancy driven catalysis. The modification mechanism of nano CeO2 is also systematically studied using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results. Research has shown that the comprehensive hydrogen storage performance of the Mg(NH2)2-2LiH-5 wt.% CeO2 composite system is optimal, with high hydrogen absorption and desorption kinetics and reversible performance. The initial hydrogen absorption and desorption temperatures of the composite system were significantly reduced from 110/130°C to 65/80°C, and the release of by-product ammonia was significantly inhibited. Under the conditions of 170°C/50 min and 180°C/100 min, 4.37 wt.% of hydrogen can be rapidly absorbed and released. After 10 cycles of hydrogen release, the hydrogen cycle retention rate increased from 85% to nearly 100%. Further mechanistic studies have shown that the nano CeO2−x generated in situ during hydrogen evolution can effectively weaken the Mg–N and N–H bonds of Mg(NH2)2, exhibiting good catalytic effects. Meanwhile, oxygen vacancies provide a fast pathway for the diffusion of hydrogen atoms in the composite system. In addition, nano CeO2−x can effectively inhibit the polycrystalline transformation of the hydrogen evolving product Li2MgN2H2 in the system at high temperatures, reducing the difficulty of re-hydrogenation of the system. This study provides an innovative perspective for the efficient modification of magnesium based metal hydrogen storage composite materials using rare earth based catalysts, and also provides a reference for regulating the comprehensive hydrogen storage performance of hydrogen storage materials using rare earth catalysts with oxygen vacancies.
The Dehydrogenation Mechanism and Cycling Property of MgH 2 Modified by CoB/CNTs Addition

Abstract:In this paper, the dehydrogenation process of MgH2+10 wt% CoB/CNTs was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) at various temperatures. The results indicated that a part of CoB/CNTs might react with MgH2 to form the new phase Co3MgC as the temperature increases from room temperature to 500 degrees C. Furthermore, it was found that the hydrogen desorption processes of the MgH2+10 wt% CoB/CNTs and as-milled MgH2 were controlled by the three-dimensional phase boundary and the one-dimensional diffusion kinetic mechanism, respectively. This difference is attributed to the fact that the in-situ formed Co3MgC can provide many pathways and act as "hydrogen pumps" for accelerating the hydrogen dissociation and association. Moreover, the cycling property of the MgH2+10 wt% CoB/CNTs composite was also studied. The hydrogen storage capacity and the hydrogen de/absorption kinetics can remain stable over 6 cycles. MgH2+10 wt% CoB/CNTs can steadily release about 6.3 wt% of H-2 within about 40 min at 300 degrees C, and hydrogen absorption can be completed rapidly. XRD measurements show that Co3MgC remains unchanged after 6 cycles, which has positive effect on the cycling stability.
Superior hydrogen storage kinetics of MgH2 by in-situ generated α-Fe from the Fe-zeolitic imidazolate framework

Abstract:While MgH2 is one of the promising hydrogen storage materials, its poor de/hydrogenation kinetics have hindered its potential applications. Here, we report that kinetic and cycle properties can be improved using Fe-doped zeolitic imidazolate framework (Fe-ZIF) as the catalysts. The synthesized MgH2@5 wt.% Fe-ZIF can absorb 5.0 wt.% hydrogen in 1 min at 200 °C and desorb 5.0 wt.% hydrogen within 16 min at 300 °C. No clear degradation of catalytic effects was observed over 30 cycles. Structural analysis revealed that the Fe-ZIF gradually decomposed into α-Fe, which strongly interacts with MgH2, realizing much higher catalytic activity and stability. Abstract:<p>Transition-metals have emerged as promising catalyst candidates for improving the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2. However, the preparation of uniformly dispersed and extra-fine transition-metals catalysts with high catalytic activity still remains a challenge. In this paper, an electrospinning-based reduction approach is presented to generate nanostructured nickel catalyst, which is protected from irreversible fusion and aggregation in subsequent high-temperature pyrolysis, in carbon nanofibers () in situ. The obtained reveals remarkable catalytic effect on improving the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2. For example, the MgH2-10 wt% composite delivers dehydrogenation capacities of 5.79 wt% and 6.12 wt% at 280 °C and 300 °C, respectively, whereas the as-milled MgH2 hardly decomposes at the same temperature. By Arrhenius plots, the calculated Ea of the dehydrogenation of MgH2-10 wt% is 93.08 kJ mol−1, which is 94.33 kJ mol−1 lower than that of the as-milled MgH2. Furthermore, the microstructure of is remained during the re/dehydrogenation process and the Ni nanoparticles are still distributed homogeneously in the composite, accounting for the excellent cycling performance. This study could render combinations of ultrafine metal nanoparticles with carbon accessible, thereby, extending opportunities in catalytic applications for hydrogen storage.</p>

Abstract:Highlights • Ni nanoparticles dispersed inside amorphous carbon (Ni/C) are synthesized. • MgH 2 Ni/C has a capacity of 6.01 wt% (98.8 % initial capacity) after 50 cycles. • Particle sintering is the primary factor for degraded capacity during cycling. • MgH 2 Ni/C maintains a stable particle size with a porous structure during cycling. • A novel carbon-induced-porosity mechanism for stable capacity is proposed. MgH 2 has been extensively studied as one of the most ideal solid hydrogen storage materials. Nevertheless, rapid capacity decay and sluggish hydrogen storage kinetics hamper its practical application. Herein, a Ni/C nano-catalyst doped MgH 2 (MgH 2 Ni/C) shows an improved hydrogen absorption kinetics with largely reduced activation energy. Particularly, the MgH 2 Ni/C displays remarkable cycling stability, which maintains a high capacity of 6.01 wt% (98.8 % of initial capacity) even after 50 full hydrogen ab/desorption cycles, while the undoped MgH 2 counterpart retains only 85.2 % of its initial capacity. Detailed microstructure characterizations clearly reveal that particle sintering/growth accounts primarily for the deterioration of cycling performance of undoped MgH 2 . By comparison, MgH 2 Ni/C can maintain a stable particle size with a growing porous structure during long-term cycling, which effectively increases the specific surface of the particles. A novel carbon-induced-porosity stabilization mechanism is proposed, which can stabilize the proportion of rapid hydrogen absorption process, thus dominating the excellent cycling performance of MgH 2 Ni/C. This study provides new insights into the cycling stability mechanism of carbon-containing Mg-based hydrogen storage materials, thus promoting their practical applications.

Abstract:MgNi-based alloys have been regarded as very promising anode material for nickel-metal hydride battery owing to their electrochemcial capacity much higher than that of AB(5) alloys. However, Mg-Ni alloy anodes generally suffer very serious capacity decay in cycling, which is previously ascribed to the corrosion of Mg in alkali electrolyte in the past decades. To further reveal the capacity fading mechanism of MgNi-based alloys, the electrochemcial hydrogen storage properties of Mg2Ni and amorphous Mg50Ni50 alloys and their microstructural evolution during cycling were comparatively studied. It has been firstly demonstrated that it is the amorphous MgNi phase instead of Mg2Ni phase contributes to electrochemical discharge capacity, because the Mg2NiH4 hardly released hydrogen under electrochemcial conditions. Then, it has been found that the charge input level has significant effect on the cyclic performance of amorphous Mg50Ni50 alloy anode. At full charge of 500 mAh g(-1), the amorphous MgNi phase easily crystallized to the nanocrystalline Mg2NiH4, which leaded to the capacity decay immediately. Comparatively, with the low charge input of 100 mAh g(-1), the discharge capacity of amorphous Mg50Ni50 alloy remained almost unchanged for 425 cycles. The excellent cyclability is attributed to the less hydrogenation-induced crystallization at low charge input. This work clearly demonstrates that the hydrogenation-induced crystallization is a dominating reason for the electrochemical capacity decay in the milled amorphous Mg-Ni anode. It provides a new approach to improve the electrochemcial properties of Mg-Ni alloy electrode by inhibiting the hydrogenation-induced crystallization. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The degradation mechanism of the La-Mg-Ni-based hydrogen storage electrode alloy La0.7Mg0.3Ni3.4Mn0.1 during charge/ discharge cycling has been systematically studied using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and linear polarization measurements. The results indicate that the intense pulverization and the oxidation/corrosion of the active components during cycling are the two main factors responsible for the fast capacity degradation, and the degradation mechanism of La0.7Mg0.3Ni3.4Mn0.1 electrode can be classified into the three consequent stages, i.e., the pulverization and Mg oxidation stage, the Mg and La oxidation stage, and the oxidation-passivation stage. SEM observation indicates that the pulverization of the alloy particles is serious due to the high cell volume expansion ratio of the hydride to alloy phase of (La, Mg)Ni-3 and LaNi5. A large number of cracks in both the alloy particles and the electrode are thus produced. XPS and AES analyses reveal that composite passive layers of Mg(OH)(2) and La(OH)(2) are formed continuously on the surface of alloy particles and increase in thickness with cycling. This porous film not only decreases the surface electrocatalytic activity but also retards the transfer of hydrogen into/or from the alloy particles to electrolyte, and decreases the amount of hydrogen absorption elements La and Mg in the alloys as well.
