Abstract:A hybrid membrane with superior antibiosis performance was prepared by the synergy of atomic layer deposition with photodeposition. The hybrid membrane has a three-layer structure: silver as the active antibiosis layer, titanium as the transition layer, and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) as the base membrane. Silver is accurately located on the membrane surface to play a full potential of antibiosis function. Titanium is controllably and stably coated on the PVDF membrane surface by atomic layer deposition, and it plays a connecting role between silver and membrane. The ALD cycle number, precursor concentration, deposition time, and methanol concentration were optimized in the fabrication process. The micromorphology, mechanical properties, separation performance, and antibiosis properties of the hybrid membrane were examined. The hybrid membrane showed a decrease in pure water flux and an increase in rejection to a small degree. The peel strength results proved that the binding stability between silver and the PVDF membrane is excellent. The hybrid membrane showed superior antibiosis performance, and the survival rate of bacteria on the membrane surface was almost 0% after 3 h. The antibiosis mechanism was systematically studied, and the results confirmed that Ag+ dissolution was the principal mechanism in the antibiosis process. This work provides a demonstration for the creation of inorganic functional layers on inert organic surfaces.
