Abstract:The titanium-based lithium ion sieve adsorbent H2TiO3 (HTO), known for its structural stability and high adsorption capacity, emerges as a highly promising material. Nonetheless, its precursor, the Li2TiO3 powder (LTO), synthesized via the high-temperature solid-phase method, tends to agglomerate and poses challenges in separation. This agglomeration compromises the adsorption sites and, consequently, its adsorption capacity. To counter this, we employed a strategy of doping LTO with magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles as a Fe source, aiming to mitigate the agglomeration issue. Subsequently, Fe-doped H2TiO3 (HFTO) was obtained by acid washing and used to adsorb lithium ions from an aqueous solution. Experimental results revealed that HFTO's equilibrium adsorption capacity for lithium in LiCl solution peaked at 34.27 mg/g. Moreover, even after five cycles of adsorption–desorption, HFTO maintained an adsorption capacity exceeding 32.00 mg/g. Investigations into HFTO's adsorption mechanism, utilizing Raman spectroscopy, FT-IR, and XPS, uncovered that the adsorption of Li+ by HFTO occurs through the dissociation of O–H bonds and the subsequent formation of O-Li bonds.

Abstract:It is highly appealing to use titanium-based adsorbents (like H 2 TiO 3 (HTO)) that have a high capacity and selectivity to directly extract Li + from an aqueous solution. However, HTO still faces the problems of low actual adsorption capacity and dissolution of Ti 4+ , and the application of powder adsorbents is limited by poor fluidity and poor recyclability. In this work, a multi-scale modification strategy was adopted. At the atomic-scale, we prepared Ni-doped HTO-Ni-2 % powder which exhibited higher adsorption capacity (33.27 mg/g) and lower dissolution rate of Ti 4+ (2.2 %) compared to undoped HTO (29.73 mg/g and 2.63 %). Computational studies showed that Ni doping replaced Li in the (Li) layer, resulting in more stable NiO bonds and enhanced electronic transition ability. At the micro-scale, we have achieved successful granulation of HTO-Ni-2 % using ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) as a binder for the first time. Owing to the increased hydrophilicity by EVOH, the spherical adsorbents exhibited impressive performance, achieving adsorption equilibrium in a short time while maintaining a considerable adsorption capacity (24 h, 10.2 mg/g), and having lower Ti 4+ dissolution. These results have significant implications for developing efficient adsorbents for lithium extraction.

Abstract:Titanium-based lithium ion sieve adsorbents (HTOs) are considered among the most promising materials for lithium extraction from aqueous sources. In this study, four surfactants—sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC), and tannic acid (TA)—were used to surface-etch HTOs, preparing adsorbents with enhanced hydrophilicity at the nanoscale. Correlation studies between the hydrophilicity of the HTO-X and their adsorption performance revealed that all HTO-X had lower contact angles than the unetched counterparts, indicating improved adsorption capacities. Notably, TA plays a synergistic role of "killing two birds with one stone". The TA-etched HTO-T adsorbent exhibited the lowest contact angle (8.8°) and the highest specific surface area (62.10 m 2 /g). In a LiCl solution, HTO-T's adsorption capacity for Li + reached 33.61 mg/g, a 26 % increase over the unetched HTO adsorbent (26.56 mg/g). Simultaneously, HTO-T significantly reduces the adsorption time and enhances the adsorption efficiency during the surface diffusion phase. Additionally, HTO-T demonstrated remarkable selectivity for lithium ions, with separation factors α(Li/Na), α(Li/K), α(Li/Mg), and α(Li/Ca) of 397.13, 181.55, 1288.47, and 1345.19, respectively, showcasing an excellent separation effect. The adsorption mechanism indicates that Li + adsorption by HTO-T primarily occurs through the disruption of O–H bonds and the formation of new O-Li bonds. This research presents an efficient strategy for the development of HTOs, demonstrating HTO-T as a potential adsorbent for lithium recovery from brine sources.

Abstract:Li2TiO3 precursor with layered structure is successfully prepared by template‐free method using anatase TiO2 and Li2CO3, followed by the treatment of dilute hydrochloric acid, which leads to obtaining H2TiO3 lithium ion sieve nanoparticles with uniform dispersion and small size. The adsorption performance and mechanism of the H2TiO3 are being studied. The experimental results show that the H2TiO3 lithium ion sieve has a large BET specific surface area (19.10 m2 g−1) and good thermal stability. At the same time, it also has a high adsorption rate and adsorption capacity (55.13 mg g−1) towards Li+ in solution due to its high dispersibility and uniformity of particle size, which can expose more adsorption sites in LiCl solution. The adsorption capacity of the H2TiO3 lithium ion sieve can reach 46.63 mg g−1, which achieves 84.58% of the equilibrium adsorption capacity. The equilibrium adsorption parameters follow the Langmuir model perfectly, demonstrating that Li+ undergoes monolayer adsorption. The results of thermodynamic and kinetic analysis show that the adsorption behavior of H2TiO3 is spontaneous and conforms to the pseudo‐second‐order kinetic model, indicating the adsorption process is controlled by chemosorption. In addition, after five adsorption/desorption cycles, the H2TiO3 lithium ion sieve still shows a high adsorption capacity of 46.15 mg g−1, and the dissolution loss of titanium is only 0.14%, which shows that the cycle stability is excellent. XPS and zeta potential analyses illustrate that the adsorption mechanism of Li+ on the H2TiO3 is an ion exchange reaction between Li+ and H+, combined with the electrostatic attraction of the adsorbent surface. Additionally, the adsorption performance of H2TiO3 lithium ion sieve in West Taijinaier Salt Lake brine was tested, and the adsorbent material proves itself is a perspective candidate for lithium extraction from aqueous lithium resources.

Abstract:The metatitanic acid H2TiO3 (HTO) with high selectivity shows potential in lithium extraction from salt lake brine. Nevertheless, the sluggish adsorption kinetics and unsatisfying actual adsorption capacity hinder H2TiO3 industrial application. Herein, a rare earth element Nd-doped H2TiO3 (Nd-HTO-1 %) was synthesized. The crystallinity, morphology, hydrophilicity, adsorption property and mechanism of Nd-HTO-1 % were systematically characterized by a series of techniques. Interestingly, Nd-doping promotes the generation of oxygen vacancies, thereby increasing the density of surface hydroxyl groups and making the surface high-hydrophilic and particle size decreased. After 1 % Nd-doping, high-hydrophilic HTO was obtained with a contact angle of 16.5°. The adsorption capacity of Nd-HTO-1 % increased by 12.5 % compared with HTO, and the equilibrium time of adsorption reduced by half to 4 h. After eight cycles, Nd-HTO-1 % still showed a considerable adsorption capacity of 39.69 mg·g−1. In the meantime, the dissolution loss of titanium is merely 0.14 %, showing excellent cycling stability. Combined with the considerable selectivity exhibiting in Qarhan salt lake brine, it demonstrates potential in utilization of Nd-doped H2TiO3 for lithium extraction from salt lake brine.

Abstract:The titanium-based lithium ion-sieve (H 2 TiO 3 , abbreviated as HTO) is considered one of the most promising adsorbents for liquid phase lithium extraction technology because of its environmental friendliness and low cost. However, the actual lithium adsorption capacity of HTO is far from the theoretical maximum due to the sluggish kinetics of Li + and H + exchange influenced by the lamellar structure. Herein, we introduce a cobalt and nitrogen co-doped H 2 TiO 3 lithium ion-sieve (abbreviated as Co/N-HTO-LIS). It has been demonstrated that the doped Co atoms partially replace Ti sites in native lattice while allochthonous N atoms prefer occupying interstitial positions, thereby modifying the crystal structure and increasing the adsorption sites. Additionally, doping Co and N in HTO can create more oxygen vacancies to facilitate the ion diffusion process. Benefiting from the synergistic effect between heteroatoms modification and oxygen vacancies mediation, Co/N-HTO-LIS exhibits excellent performance in terms of lithium extraction with a lithium adsorption capacity of 46.17 mg g −1 in simulated brine (lithium 1100 mg/L) at 20 °C. This value is significantly higher than that of cobalt-doped HTO (41.28 mg g −1 ) and undoped HTO (30.58 mg g −1 ). Furthermore, batch experiments demonstrate that Co/N-HTO-LIS also possesses good stability and selectivity. This work provides a guidance for rational design of titanium-based adsorbents towards lithium extraction from brine.

Abstract:The advantages of new types of H2TiO3 lithium-ion sieves, including excellent adsorption performance, high-efficiency Li+-ion selectivity, reliable regeneration, environmental friendliness, and easy preparation, have attracted considerable attention. Currently, the prices of lithium carbonate and other related products are rapidly increasing, so the use of H2TiO3 lithium-ion sieves to extract lithium resources in salt lake brine has become a crucial strategy. H2TiO3 lithium-ion sieve is a layered double hydroxide with a 3R1 sequence to arrange oxygen layers. Its adsorption mechanism involves the breaking of surface O-H bonds and the formation of O-Li bonds. This study provides a theoretical basis for developing high-efficiency lithium-ion sieves. This article also summarizes the influencing factors for the synthesis process of H2TiO3, which can seriously influence the adsorption performance, and offers experimental verification for the preparation of H2TiO3 lithium-ion sieves. H2TiO3 lithium-ion sieves prepared from anatase using a reasonable method show the largest adsorption capacity. In addition, effective ways to recycle H2TiO3 are outlined, which provide a guarantee for its industrial application. Finally, this paper summarizes the full text and points out future research directions for H2TiO3 lithium-ion sieves.

Abstract:The efficient recovery of lithium from the alkaline mother liquor with high Na/Li ratios after Li 2 CO 3 precipitation by adsorption has received extensive attention. However, synthesizing composite adsorbents with excellent adsorption capacity and rate still faces huge challenges. In this work, we synthesized a novel Co-doped Li 2 TiO 3 lithium ion sieve (LTO-1/32Co) using the calcination method. After converting to Co-doped H 2 TiO 3 (HTO-1/32Co) by pickling, the adsorption capacity of the material was 1.4 times higher than that of conventional H 2 TiO 3 . To realize the industrial application of the powdered HTO-1/32Co, it was coated with polysulfone (PSF) by the wet spinning method. The saturated adsorption capacity of the material could reach 60.79 mg·g −1 , which was at the forefront of reported composite adsorbents. When the adsorbent was applied for lithium recovery from lithium precipitation mother liquor, the adsorption capacity could reach 40.12 mg·g −1 , and the equilibrium time was only 50 min. The elution rate of Li + could be maintained at 90.56 % with the dissolution loss of Ti no more than 0.43 % after six cycles. The developed fibrous composite adsorbent exhibits excellent adsorption/desorption performance and cyclic stability, making it a competitive candidate for efficient lithium recovery from lithium precipitation mother liquor and other lithium-rich alkaline brine resources.

Abstract:Lithium recovery from brine is critical for the sustainable development of energy-storage devices. However, the current lithium-ion sieve adsorbents are hampered by the adsorption rate and adsorption capacity. Herein, ultrathin nanosheets-assembled Li4Ti5O12 porous microspheres with hierarchical mesoporous structure are prepared by a hydrothermal method. Their high specific surface area (above 180 m2/g) exposed more adsorption sites and significantly accelerated the adsorption rate (equilibrium in 1 h). Besides, the H4Ti5O12 (HTO) microspheres showed superior Li+ adsorption capacity of 43.20 mg/g and high selectivity for Li+ from high Mg-containing aqueous solutions. The lithium adsorption over HTO is endothermic and can be well defined as pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model, indicating the chemical adsorption and monolayer adsorption. The facial regeneration of HTO by HCl shows excellent stability and the Li+ adsorption capacity remains above 93% after 20 cycles. Thus, this HTO microspheres can be regarded as a helpful candidate for lithium recovery.

Lithium adsorption performance of a three-dimensional porous H2TiO3-type lithium ion-sieve in strong alkaline Bayer liquor

Abstract:Removing lithium from the Bayer liquor for ensuring good alumina product quality demands a special lithium ion-sieve (LIS) with good stability in a strong alkaline medium. In this study, a three-dimensional porous H2TiO3-type LIS (porous-HTO) prepared by a polystyrene (PS) colloidal microspheres template was applied to adsorb Li+ from the strong alkaline Bayer liquor. XRD and SEM results confirm the fine stability of porous-HTO in strong alkaline medium, and the regeneration tests show that more than 64 mg g−1 lithium adsorption capacity still remains even after 5 cycles of lithiation–delithiation in the simulation Bayer liquor. The lithium adsorption processes of porous-HTO and bare H2TiO3-type LIS (bare-HTO) both fit the pseudo-second-order model, but the adsorption capacity and the adsorption rate of the porous-HTO are much better than those of the bare-HTO. For porous-HTO, the adsorption rate constant is 0.02357 g mg−1 h−1 and the equilibrium adsorption capacity is 76.3 mg g−1, while for bare-HTO, the adsorption rate constant is 0.009682 g mg−1 h−1 and the equilibrium adsorption capacity is only 44.8 mg g−1. The lithium selectivity tests demonstrate that the coexisting ions including Na+, K+, AlO2−, SiO32− in the simulation Bayer liquor have low influence on lithium adsorption. The simulation Bayer liquors with Li+ ions of 56.00, 30.00 and 5.00 mg L−1 are all reduced to below 1.00 mg L−1 by virtue of one-time-adsorption of porous-HTO at various solid to liquid ratios of 1.0, 0.5 and 0.1 g L−1, respectively.

Preparation of H2TiO3@GO for rapid adsorption of Li+ and its adsorption behaviour

Abstract:In order to improve the adsorption capacity and rate of lithium-ion sieves (H2TiO3), graphene oxide (GO) was introduced as a soft carbon material to prevent the agglomeration of Li2TiO3 by utilizing the structural attributes of the GO carrier. The ultrafine LTO@GO lithium ion sieve (particle diameter 40 nm) was prepared by a two-step process including a sol–gel co-mixture step and a solid-state calcination step. Furthermore, LTO@GO-0.05 lithium ion sieves were identified as the optimal ratio with a high adsorption capacity of 38.3 mg·g-1. The crystallinity of the (-133) and (312) facets of LTO@GO-0.05 were improved to 86.62% and 74.67% by XRD analysis, indicating an improvement in the acid resistance of the structure. The hydroxyl group content in HTO@GO was 41.79% higher than 35.72% in HTO from XPS survey of HTO@GO and HTO, which is benefit to increase adsorption capacity. Next, the HTO@GO adsorption rate was investigated to reach adsorption equilibrium shortened from 24 h to 14 h compared with HTO. The results indicate that HTO@GO has good industrial potential with fast Li+ adsorption.

Hydrothermal synthesis and adsorption behavior of H4Ti5O12 nanorods along [100] as lithium ion-sieves

Abstract:The adsorption method is a promising route to recover Li+ from waste lithium batteries and lithium-containing brines. To achieve this goal, it is vital to synthesize a stable and high adsorption capacity adsorbent. In this work, Li4Ti5O12 nanorods are prepared by two hydrothermal processes followed by a calcination process. Then the prepared Li4Ti5O12 nanorods are treated with different HCl concentrations to obtain a H4Ti5O12 adsorbent with 5 μm length along the [100] direction. The maximum amount of extracted lithium can reach 90% and the extracted titanium only 2.5%. The batch adsorption experiments indicate that the H4Ti5O12 nanorod maximum adsorption capacity can reach 23.20 mg g-1 in 24 mM LiCl solution. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics fit a Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model, respectively. Meanwhile, the real adsorption selectivity experiments show that the maximum Li+ adsorption capacity reaches 1.99 mmol g-1, which is far higher than Mg2+ (0.03 mmol g-1) and Ca2+ (0.02 mmol g-1), implying these nanorods have higher adsorption selectivity for Li+ from Lagoco Salt Lake brine. The adsorption capacity for Li+ remains 91% after five cycles. With the help of XPS analyses, the adsorption mechanism of Li+ on the H4Ti5O12 nanorods is an ion exchange reaction. Therefore, this nanorod adsorbent has a potential application for Li+ recovery from aqueous lithium resources.
Prelithiation-derived hierarchical TiO2 sieve with metal-organic framework gate for selective lithium recovery

Abstract:Sustainable lithium supply significantly matters the healthy development of electric vehicles markets. Selective adsorption plays an important role in aqueous lithium recovery due to low energy consumption and easy processing. We here report a prelithiation concept to generate active Li+ sites in TiO2 forming LixTiO2 at a mild temperature for lithium recovery. A hollow protonated LixTiO2 matrix with nanosheets surface was built to provide abundant active sites for specific Li+ capture with fast matter transfer. And a biomimetic metal–organic framework (ZIF-8) gate layer, acting as Li+ channel, was engineered to regulate cation solvation structure for selective transport of Li+. Consequently, the resultant TiO2-based hybrid lithium-ion sieve demonstrates fast and homogenous Li+ chemisorption with a high Li+ uptake capacity (∼14 mg g−1 for 24 h at pH = 12), high Li+ selectivity against competing cations in both simulated and natural brine, and acceptable reusability in simulated brine, indicating further application potential.

Abstract:H2TiO3 is the most promising and highly selective lithium-ion sieve. In this study, HTO-PVC-x (x = 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30) lithium-ion sieves were prepared via an antisolvent method using PVC as the matrix. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that Li2TiO3 was preferentially indexed to a C2/c monoclinic structure. LTO-PVC-x had a spherical size of 300 μm and an enormous specific surface area. The morphology and size of HTO-PVC-x obtained by HCl elution were consistent with those of LTO-PVC-x, indicating good separation and recycling properties. HTO-PVC-15 had a higher adsorption performance and adsorption capacity at a lower initial Li+ concentration. The adsorption behaviour of HTO-PVC-15 is in accordance with the Langmuir isothermal model and pseudo-second-order model, which belongs to the chemical adsorption process. It reached 96% of its equilibrium adsorption capacity within 2 h. Simultaneously, it maintained high adsorption selectivity and cycling performance and a low Ti4+ dissolution rate. Thus, HTO-PVC-15 has immense potential to be used for salt lake brine adsorption applications.

Abstract:Considering the striking theoretical Lithium (Li) uptake capacity, environmental benignity and low cost, metatitanic acid (H2TiO3, abbreviated to HTO) is considered to be one of the most promising lithium ion sieve (LIS) adsorbent for liquid-phase Li extraction technology. However, the discouraging adsorption kinetics seriously hampers its industrial application. Herein, the traditional HTO-LIS is promoted by the combined strategies of pore-structure construction, surface heteroatom modification and alien Zn ion bulk doping, which ameliorates the surface characterization of the HTO adsorbent towards fast Li+ capturing from the solution, facilitating the activation and replacement of Li+ on the interface. Further, the oxygen bulk defect originated from Zn doping accelerates the Li+ transfer in solid-phase via the depressed diffusion energy barrier. The interfacial modification and defect engineering synergistically cooperate to extremely speed up the Li extraction process that the Li uptake rate of the optimized sample (PN-HZTO-0.04) increases to 457% compared to the pristine HTO-0 adsorbent. Remarkably, in the optimized Solid/Liquid ratio adsorption test, the adsorption efficiency of above 96% are achieved in 2 h, without obvious capacity degradation and Ti dissolution loss during adsorption/desorption cycles, representing excellent recycling ability.

Abstract:Lithium ion sieve (LIS) has attracted great attention due to its high adsorption selectivity towards Li+. Herein, a new type of Zr-doped Ti-LIS (HZrTO) was synthesized by a simple calcination method. The adsorption capacity increased from 56.3 mg g−1 (before doping) to 93.2 mg g−1 after doping in LiOH solution (lithium 1.8 g L−1). The adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics of HZrTO accord with the Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation, respectively. Batch experiments showed that HZrTO has good stability and selectivity. In addition, HZrTO was granulated via epoxy resin (E-12), and the obtained granular adsorbent showed good adsorption capacity, excellent stability and high selectivity towards Li+.

Abstract:H2TiO3 (HTO) is recognized as a highly promising lithium-ion sieve (LIS) material for lithium resources extraction from the liquid phase, attributed to its high theoretical capacity, stable structure, and excellent recyclability. However, when directly employed in continuous flow systems, the powder HTO-LIS encounters significant challenges, including elevated energy consumption and persistent material loss, impeding its practical application. Therefore, it is necessary to granulate the powder LIS material, which nevertheless results in the reduction of the specific capacity and Li extraction rate. Herein, a hybrid binder (cellulose acetate/sulfonated poly(ether ketone)/poly(vinyl chloride)) is employed for granulation and immobilization of the powder HTO-LIS. This approach regulates the porosity structure, hydrophilicity, surface charge character, and mechanical strength of the granulated LIS, thereby synergistically enhancing Li extraction capacity (26.54 mg g−1), recovery kinetics (19.02 mg g−1 within 4 h), and dynamic cycling stability (adsorption capacity retention of 94.02% after 40 cycles). This work proposes a feasible granulation strategy, contributing to advance the industrialization of LIS materials.

Abstract:Hydrogen titanium oxide (HTO) is a promising material in extracting lithium ions from dilute sources such as geothermal or oil/gas brines. However, experiments show limited Li adsorption in HTO compared to its theoretical maximum capacity, where all H atoms in HTO are replaced by Li that forms lithium titanium oxide (LTO). Here, ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations show clear evidence of phase transitions at specific Li adsorption in pure or doped HTO/LTO, which directly predict their experimental maximum capacity. Analysis of thermodynamic properties as well as layered crystal structures show distinct Li-poor to Li-rich phase transitions in the pure, Mo-doped, and Fe-doped HTO/LTO. In addition, it is observed a second phase transition in the Fe-doped HTO/LTO in the Li-poor phases that further constrains Li adsorption. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first study that accurately predict the experimental capacities in ion sieves from first principle. More importantly, this study puts spotlights on phase transitions as an important consideration in molecular engineering developments of functional separation materials, such as the high-performance lithium-ion sieves presented herein.

Abstract:Monoclinic β-Li2TiO3 (LTO) is regarded as a lithium adsorbent precursor. In order to inhibit agglomeration during solid state reaction, C2H3LiO2·2H2O instead of Li2CO3 was firstly used as the lithium resource to synthesize LTO. Lithium ion sieve H2TiO3 (HTO) was then obtained by acid treatment of LTO. Physicochemical properties of obtained LTO and HTO were characterized via powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and particle size distribution analysis (PSD). Lithium adsorption selectivity and stability of prepared HTO for West Taijinar Salt Lake were investigated. Solid state reaction mechanism of C2H3LiO2·2H2O and TiO2 was investigated by TG-DTA analysis. Results show that melting of C2H3LiO2·2H2O (at 64.5 °C) during the early calcination stage could form liquid–solid phase and remarkably improve mixing of C2H3LiO2·2H2O and TiO2. Compared to Li2CO3 used as the lithium resource, huge heat and gases released during the reaction of dehydrated C2H3LiO2·2H2O and TiO2 (between 380 °C and 515 °C) accelerate the nucleation process and effectively inhibits agglomeration, which leads to a smaller particle size (∼70 nm). It is shown that lithium uptake and adsorption rate were improved because of easier mass transfer during the ion-exchange process. Lithium adsorption behavior could be well described by the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Seperation factor α (Li/Mg) of obtained HTO in West Taijinar Salt Lake brine reached 5441.17, meaning remarkable lithium adsorption selectivity in real lake brine. Besides, adsorption uptake remained 24.5 mg/g after 5 cycles in West Taijinar Salt Lake brine, which indicates obtained HTO has good stability.
