Study of near-Earth reconnection events with Cluster and Double Star

Abstract:Observations made by a unique constellation of Cluster (at 14-16 R-E), TC2, Goes10, and LANL spacecraft (near 6.6 R-E) have allowed us to study the details of three reconnection events in the middle of a thick plasma sheet with the reconnection X-line located unusually close to Earth (10-12 R-E). We use mapping along field lines with magnetospheric models adapted to magnetic field observations to confirm that the reconnection region mapped onto localized auroral brightenings. Using simultaneous observations in the inflow and outflow regions, we describe an encounter with a localized tailward Alfvenic jet produced by a short isolated reconnection pulse. A good correlation between intense E and ion [BV] indicates that the concurrent strong turbulence could not destroy the frozen-in ion behavior in the reconnection outflow. We find that a steady quadrupole-like distribution of the magnetic By component in the turbulent reconnection outflow extended far beyond the ion diffusion region and existed for several minutes. We demonstrate an apparent V-x flow reversal, formed owing to the reappearance (switch-on) of reconnection at another location, rather than to a continuous motion of the active X-line. Using the Liouville mapping technique, we show that the acceleration of outflow electrons, after the particles passed a potential drop of 180 V, is consistent with Fermi/betatron acceleration. We also suggest another interpretation of the energetic particle bursts at the onsets, to emphasize the role of seed population and explain the sudden burst as a consequence of changing magnetic topology.

Abstract:Cold (few eV) ions of ionospheric origin are widely observed in the lobe region of Earth’s magnetotail and can enter the ion jet region after magnetic reconnection is triggered in the magnetotail. Here, we investigate a magnetotail crossing with cold ions in one tailward and two earthward ion jets observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) constellation of spacecraft. Cold ions co-existing with hot plasma-sheet ions form types of ion velocity distribution functions (VDFs) in the three jets. In one earthward jet, MMS observe cold-ion beams with large velocities parallel to the magnetic fields, and we perform quantitative analysis on the ion VDFs in this jet. The cold ions, together with the hot ions, are reconnection outflow ions and are a minor population in terms of number density inside this jet. The average bulk speed of the cold-ion beams is approximately 38% larger than that of the hot plasma-sheet ions. The cold-ion beams inside the explored jet are about one order of magnitude colder than the hot plasma-sheet ions. These cold-ion beams could be accelerated by the Hall electric field in the cold ion diffusion region and the shrinking magnetic field lines through the Fermi effect.

Abstract:An in situ measurement at the magnetopause shows that the quadrupole pattern of the Hall magnetic field, which is commonly observed in a symmetric reconnection, is still evident in an asymmetric component reconnection, but the two quadrants adjacent to the magnetosphere are strongly compressed into the electron scale and the widths of the remaining two quadrants are still ion scale. The bipolar Hall electric field pattern generally created in a symmetric reconnection is replaced by a unipolar electric field within the electron-scale quadrants. Furthermore, it is concluded that the spacecraft directly passed through the inner electron diffusion region based on the violation of the electron frozen-in condition, the energy dissipation, and the slippage between the electron flow and the magnetic field. Within the inner electron diffusion region, magnetic energy was released and accumulated simultaneously, and it was accumulated in the perpendicular directions while dissipated in the parallel direction. The localized thinning of the current sheet accounts for the energy accumulation in a reconnection.

Abstract:Probing magnetic reconnection in space Magnetic reconnection occurs when the magnetic field permeating a conductive plasma rapidly rearranges itself, releasing energy and accelerating particles. Reconnection is important in a wide variety of physical systems, but the details of how it occurs are poorly understood. Burch et al. used NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale mission to probe the plasma properties within a reconnection event in Earth's magnetosphere (see the Perspective by Coates). They find that the process is driven by the electron-scale dynamics. The results will aid our understanding of magnetized plasmas, including those in fusion reactors, the solar atmosphere, solar wind, and the magnetospheres of Earth and other planets. Influence of uncertainties of the empirical models for inferring the E-region electric fields at the dip equator

Abstract:Abstract Daytime E-region electric fields play a crucial role in the ionospheric dynamics at the geomagnetic dip latitudes. Due to their importance, there is an interest in accurately measuring and modeling the electric fields for both climatological and near real-time studies. In this work, we present the daytime vertical (Ez) and eastward (Ey) electric fields for a reference quiet day (February 7, 2001) at the São Luís Space Observatory, Brazil (SLZ, 2.31°S, 44.16°W). The component Ez is inferred from Doppler shifts of type II echoes (gradient drift instability) and the anisotropic factor, which is computed from ion and electron gyro frequencies as well as ion and electron collision frequencies with neutral molecules. The component Ey depends on the ratio of Hall and Pedersen conductivities and Ez. A magnetic field-line-integrated conductivity model is used to obtain the anisotropic factor for calculating Ez and the ionospheric conductivities for calculating Ey. This model uses the NRLMSISE-00, IRI-2007, and IGRF-11 empirical models as input parameters for neutral atmosphere, ionosphere, and geomagnetic field, respectively. Consequently, it is worth determining the uncertainties (or errors) in Ey and Ez associated with these empirical model outputs in order to precisely define the confidence limit for the estimated electric field components. For this purpose, errors of ±10 % were artificially introduced in the magnitude of each empirical model output before estimating Ey and Ez. The corresponding uncertainties in the ionospheric conductivity and electric field are evaluated considering the individual and cumulative contribution of the artificial errors. The results show that the neutral densities and temperature may be responsible for the largest changes in Ey and Ez, followed by changes in the geomagnetic field intensity and electron and ions compositions.

Characterizing Velocity-Space Signatures of Electron Energization in Large-Guide-Field Collisionless Magnetic Reconnection

Abstract:Magnetic reconnection plays an important role in the release of magnetic energy and consequent energization of particles in collisionless plasmas. Energy transfer in collisionless magnetic reconnection is inherently a two-step process: reversible, collisionless energization of particles by the electric field, followed by collisional thermalization of that energy, leading to irreversible plasma heating. Gyrokinetic numerical simulations are used to explore the first step of electron energization, and we generate the first examples of field-particle correlation (FPC) signatures of electron energization in 2D strong-guide-field collisionless magnetic reconnection. We determine these velocity space signatures at the x-point and in the exhaust, the regions of the reconnection geometry in which the electron energization primarily occurs. Modeling of these velocity-space signatures shows that, in the strong-guide-field limit, the energization of electrons occurs through bulk acceleration of the out-of-plane electron flow by parallel electric field that drives the reconnection, a non-resonant mechanism of energization. We explore the variation of these velocity-space signatures over the plasma beta range $0.01 \le \beta_i \le 1$. Our analysis goes beyond the fluid picture of the plasma dynamics and exploits the kinetic features of electron energization in the exhaust region to propose a single-point diagnostic which can potentially identify a reconnection exhaust region using spacecraft observations.

Abstract:The "communications blackout"phenomenon has bothered the aerospace industry for several decades. However, the unsatisfying numerical methods and the rapidly changing inflow conditions make the estimation of electrons' density inaccurate. To lay the first step for model calibration and the anti-blackout design, the Artificial Neural Networks and the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method with the quantum-kinetic (Q-K) model are brought together to perform the global sensitivity analysis and uncertainty quantification. The three-dimensional RAM-C II (the second flight of the Radio Attenuation Measurement experiments) head flows are simulated considering aleatory uncertainties (inflow uncertainties) and epistemic uncertainties (reaction parameters uncertainties). Under the inflow condition of an 81 km atmosphere and a velocity of 7.8 km/s, aleatory uncertainties are found to be the dominant type of uncertainty for the number density of electrons, especially the freestream velocity, which means the accurate measurement of the vehicle's velocity is much more critical than the calibration of the model. The importance ranking is listed, and the "Three rules"for finding the essential reactions are proposed. The probability that the real value is smaller than the nominal value considering both uncertainties is 27%-68%.
Observationally Quantified Reconnection Providing a Viable Mechanism for Active Region Coronal Heating.

Abstract:The heating of the Sun's corona has been explained by several different mechanisms including wave dissipation and magnetic reconnection. While both have been shown capable of supplying the requisite power, neither has been used in a quantitative model of observations fed by measured inputs. Here we show that impulsive reconnection is capable of producing an active region corona agreeing both qualitatively and quantitatively with extreme-ultraviolet observations. We calculate the heating power proportional to the velocity difference between magnetic footpoints and the photospheric plasma, called the non-ideal velocity. The length scale of flux elements reconnected in the corona is found to be around 160 km. The differential emission measure of the model corona agrees with that derived using multi-wavelength images. Synthesized extreme-ultraviolet images resemble observations both in their loop-dominated appearance and their intensity histograms. This work provides compelling evidence that impulsive reconnection events are a viable mechanism for heating the corona.

Abstract:The intrinsic temporal nature of magnetic reconnection at the magnetopause has been an active area of research. Both temporally steady and intermittent reconnection have been reported. We examine the steadiness of reconnection using space-ground conjunctions under quasi-steady solar wind driving. The spacecraft suggests that reconnection is first inactive, and then activates. The radar further suggests that after activation, reconnection proceeds continuously but unsteadily. The reconnection electric field shows variations at frequencies below 10 mHz with peaks at 3 and 5 mHz. The variation amplitudes are ∼10-30 mV/m in the ionosphere, and 0.3-0.8 mV/m at the equatorial magnetopause. Such amplitudes represent 30-60% of the peak reconnection electric field. The unsteadiness of reconnection can be plausibly explained by the fluctuating magnetic field in the turbulent magnetosheath. A comparison with a previous global hybrid simulation suggests that it is the foreshock waves that drive the magnetosheath fluctuations, and hence modulate the reconnection.

Abstract:We present an analysis of the ionospheric electric field dynamics at high latitudes during periods of quiet and disturbed geomagnetic activity by exploiting recent advancements in dynamical systems and extreme value theory. Specifically, we employed two key indicators: the instantaneous dimension d, which evaluates the degrees of freedom within the system, and the extremal index θ, which quantifies the system's persistence in a given state. Electric field measurements were obtained from the CSES-01 satellite at mid- and high latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere. Our analysis revealed that the instantaneous dimension increases upon crossing specific ionospheric regions corresponding to the auroral oval boundaries. Outside these regions, the instantaneous dimension fluctuates around the state-space dimension, suggesting an ergodic nature of the system. As geomagnetic activity intensifies, differences in the properties of various ionospheric regions persist, albeit with an increased system instability characterized by higher θ values, thus indicating the externally driven nature of the electric field response to geomagnetic activity. This study provides new insights into the spatial and temporal variability of electric field fluctuations in the ionosphere, highlighting the complex interplay between geomagnetic conditions and ionospheric dynamics.

Ion Energization and Thermalization in Magnetic Reconnection Exhaust Region in the Solar Wind

Abstract:Plasma energization and thermalization in magnetic reconnection is an important topic in astrophysical studies. We select two magnetic reconnection exhausts encountered by Solar Orbiter and analyze the associated ion heating in the kinetic regime. Both cases feature asymmetric plasma merging in the exhaust and anisotropic heating. For a quantitative investigation of the associated complex velocity-space structures, we adopt a three-dimensional Hermite representation of the proton velocity distribution function to produce the distribution of Hermite moments. We also derive the enstrophy and Hermite spectra to analyze the free energy conversion and transfer in phase space. We find a depletion of Hermite power at small m (corresponding to large-scale structures in velocity space) inside the reconnection exhaust region, concurrent with enhanced proton temperature and decreased enstrophy. Furthermore, the slopes of the 1D time-averaged parallel Hermite spectra are lower inside the exhaust and consistent with the effect of phase mixing that creates small fluctuations in velocity space. These fluctuations store free energy at higher m and are smoothed by weak collisionality, leading to irreversible thermalization. We also suggest that the perpendicular heating may happen via perpendicular phase mixing resulting from finite Larmor radius effects around the exhaust boundary.

The Location and Angle Distribution of Magnetic Reconnection in the Solar Corona

Abstract:A major unresolved issue in solar physics is the nature of the reconnection events that may give rise to the extreme temperatures measured in the solar corona. In the nanoflare heating paradigm of coronal heating, localized reconnection converts magnetic energy into thermal energy, producing multithermal plasma in the corona. The properties of the corona produced by magnetic reconnection, however, depend on the details of the reconnection process. A significant challenge in understanding the details of reconnection in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models is that these models are frequently only able to tell us that reconnection has occurred, but there is significant difficulty in identifying precisely where and when it occurred. In order to properly understand the consequences of reconnection in MHD models, it is crucial to identify reconnecting field lines and where along the field lines reconnection occurs. In this work, we analyze a fully 3D MHD simulation of a realistic sunspot topology, driven by photospheric motions, and we present a model for identifying reconnecting field lines. We also present a proof-of-concept model for identifying the location of reconnection along the reconnecting field lines, and use that to measure the angle at which reconnection occurs in the simulation. We find evidence that magnetic reconnection occurs preferentially near field line footpoints, and discuss the implications of this for coronal heating models.

A comparative study of resistivity models for simulations of magnetic reconnection in the solar atmosphere. II. Plasmoid formation

Abstract:Plasmoid-mediated reconnection plays a fundamental role in different solar atmospheric phenomena. Numerical reproduction of this process is therefore essential for developing robust solar models. Our goal is to assess plasmoid-mediated reconnection across various numerical resistivity models in order to investigate how plasmoid numbers and reconnection rates depend on the Lundquist number. We used the Bifrost code to drive magnetic reconnection in a 2D coronal fan-spine topology, carrying out a parametric study of several experiments with different numerical resolution and resistivity models. We employed three anomalous resistivity models: (1) the original hyper-diffusion from Bifrost, (2) a resistivity proportional to current density, and (3) a resistivity quadratically proportional to electron drift velocity. For comparisons, experiments with uniform resistivity were also run. Plasmoid-mediated reconnection is obtained in most of the experiments. With uniform resistivity, increasing the resolution reveals higher plasmoid frequency with weaker scaling to the Lundquist number, obtaining 7.9-12 plasmoids per minute for $S_ L $ with a scaling of $S_ L $ in the highest-resolution resistivity cases, transcending into Petschek reconnection in the high-$S_ L $ limit (where the diffusive effects of the resistivity become small compared to the non-uniform viscosity) and Sweet-Parker reconnection in the low-$S_ L $ limit. Anomalous resistivity leads to similar results even with lower resolution. The drift-velocity-dependent resistivity excellently reproduces Petschek reconnection for any Lundquist number, and similar results are seen with resistivity proportional to current-density though with slightly lower reconnection rates and plasmoid numbers. Among the different resistivity models applied on the given numerical resolution, the hyper-diffusion model reproduced plasmoid characteristics in closest resemblance to those obtained with uniform resistivity at a significantly higher resolution.

Abstract:There is ample evidence for magnetic reconnection in the solar system, but it is a nontrivial task to visualize, to determine the proper approaches and frames to study, and in turn to elucidate the physical processes at work in reconnection regions from in-situ measurements of plasma particles and electromagnetic fields. Here an overview is given of a variety of single- and multi-spacecraft data analysis techniques that are key to revealing the context of in-situ observations of magnetic reconnection in space and for detecting and analyzing the diffusion regions where ions and/or electrons are demagnetized. We focus on recent advances in the era of the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission, which has made electron-scale, multi-point measurements of magnetic reconnection in and around Earth's magnetosphere.
