Abstract:Groundwater deterioration due to enrichment with contaminants of either geogenic or anthropogenic origin has adversely affected safe water supply for drinking and irrigation, with pervasive impacts on human health and ecosystem functions. However, the spatiotemporal evolution and public health effects of groundwater quality remain unclarified, posing a grand challenge for the safe and sustainable supply of global groundwater resources. This article provides a state-of-the-art review of the complexity and dynamics of groundwater quality, as well as the impacts of various groundwater substances on human health. In particular, knowledge is growing about the health impacts of key substances ranging from nutritional elements (e.g., Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ ) to pollutants (e.g., heavy metals/metalloids, persistent organic pollutants, and emerging contaminants) and, further, to pathogenic microorganisms to which the human body can be exposed through multiple patterns of groundwater use. Proliferating concerns at the same time call for enhancing, science-based governance directives, economic policies, and management strategies coordinating groundwater quality. We propose that safeguarding groundwater-dependent public health needs concerted efforts in source control, cross-scale rehabilitation, and social hydrology-based groundwater governance. Abstract:The rapid economic and industrial growth of China, exemplified by a 10-fold increase in its gross domestic product in the past 15 years, has lifted millions of its citizens out of poverty but has simultaneously led to severe environmental problems. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 2.4 million deaths in China per year could be attributed to degraded environmental quality. Much of China's soil, air, and water are polluted by xenobiotic contaminants, such as heavy metals and organic compounds. In addition, soil quality is degraded by erosion, desertification, and nutrient runoff. Air quality is further compromised by particulates, especially in heavily populated areas. Research shows that 80% of urban rivers in China are significantly polluted, and poor water quality is a key contributor to poverty in rural China. Economic and industrial growth has also greatly expanded the demand for water sources of appropriate quality; however, pollution has markedly diminished usable water resource quantity. Desertification and diminishing water resources threaten future food security. In recent years, China's government has increased efforts to reverse these trends and to improve ecosystem health. The Web of Science database showed that the percentage of articles on China devoting to environmental sciences increased dramatically in recent years. In addition, the top 25 institutes publishing the papers in environmental sciences were all in China. This special issue includes seven articles focusing on nonpoint source pollution, environmental quality, and ecosystem health in China. The major issues, and results of these studies, are discussed in this introduction.

Abstract:A water crisis has prompted the Chinese government to develop an ambitious water conservancy plan. However, the plan may not achieve water sustainability and may cause unintended environmental and socioeconomic consequences, unless it accounts for complex human-nature interactions ( 1 ). Water shortages, for example, force people to find alternatives, such as treatment facilities, whose land and energy requirements aggravate food and energy production, which need large amounts of water. Other nations face similar challenges and share real water from China along international rivers and/or virtual water through trade. Water problems are particularly challenging in China, which has the largest population, fastest-growing economy, rising water demand, relatively scarce water, dated infrastructure, and inadequate governance. We highlight China's water crisis and plan, and then offer recommendations.
The groundwater crisis and sustainable agriculture in northern China

Abstract:In northern China, groundwater is the main water source for industry and agriculture. Most food is produced in irrigated farmland. Groundwater withdrawal has exceeded the permitted exploited power. The adverse ecological and environmental impacts of groundwater withdrawal are outlined. These include subsidence, salinization, desertification and seawater intrusion. Four methods for solving the groundwater crisis in northern China are described: development of water-saving agricultural practices and efficient water utilization; water transfer from south to north; water protection to combat pollution; and development of research on multi-water sources.

Abstract:Abstract China is a country poor in water resources, with an annual 2800 km3 of freshwater storage and 2300 m3 of water availability per capita. Both the water shortage and low use efficiency make modern China thirsty. Furthermore, the loss of glaciers and wetlands in the western plateau that feed the major rivers of China as their headwaters will exacerbate this thirst in the future. Although groundwater might be tapped as a resource, most regions already use their aquifers excessively. China needs to focus on its urgent water-shortage problems to safeguard its booming economy and to contribute more to world development.

Abstract:Groundwater quality research is extremely important for supporting the safety of the water supply and human health in arid and semi-arid areas of China. This review article was constructed to report the latest research progress of groundwater quality in western China where groundwater quality is undergoing fast deterioration because of fast economic development and extensive anthropogenic activities. The opportunities brought by increasing public awareness of groundwater quality protection were also highlighted and discussed. To guide and promote further development of groundwater quality research in China, especially in western China, ten key groundwater quality research fields were proposed. The review shows that the intensification of human activities and the associated impacts on groundwater quality in China, especially in western China, has made groundwater quality research increasingly important, and has caught the attention of local, national, and international agencies and scholars. China has achieved some progress in groundwater quality research in terms of national and regional laws, regulations, and financial supports. The future of groundwater quality research in China, especially in western China, is promising reflected by the opportunities highlighted. The key research fields proposed in this article may also inform groundwater quality protection and management at the national and international level.

Prioritizing ecological restoration in hydrologically sensitive areas to improve groundwater quality

Abstract:Greening is the optimal way to mitigate climate change and water quality degradation caused by agricultural expansion and rapid urbanization. However, the ideal sites to plant trees or grass to achieve a win–win solution between the environment and the economy remain unknown. Here, we performed a nationwide survey on groundwater nutrients (nitrate nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, dissolved reactive phosphorus) and heavy metals (vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, arsenic, strontium, molybdenum, cadmium, and lead) in China, and combined it with the global/national soil property database and machine learning (random forest) methods to explore the linkages between land use within hydrologically sensitive areas (HSAs) and groundwater quality from the perspective of hydrological connectivity. We found that HSAs occupy approximately 20 % of the total land area and are hotspots for transferring nutrients and heavy metals from the land surface to the saturated zone. In particular, the proportion of natural lands within HSAs significantly contributes 8.0 % of the variability in groundwater nutrients and heavy metals in China ( p < 0.01), which is equivalent to their contribution (8.8 %) at the regional scale (radius = 4 km, area = 50 km 2 ). Increasing the proportion of natural lands within HSAs improves groundwater quality, as indicated by the significant reduction in the concentrations of nitrate nitrogen, manganese, arsenic, strontium, and molybdenum ( p < 0.05). These new findings suggest that prioritizing ecological restoration in HSAs is conducive to achieving the harmony between the environment (improving groundwater quality) and economy (reducing investment in area management).

Abstract:Linking groundwater quality to health will make the invisible groundwater visible, but there are knowledge gaps to understand the linkage which requires cross-disciplinary convergent research. The substances in groundwater that are critical to health can be classified into five types according to the sources and characteristics: geogenic substances, biogenic elements, anthropogenic contaminants, emerging contaminants, and pathogens. The most intriguing questions are related to quantitative assessment of human health and ecological risks of exposure to the critical substances via natural or induced artificial groundwater discharge: What is the list of critical substances released from discharging groundwater, and what are the pathways of the receptors' exposure to the critical substances? How to quantify the flux of critical substances during groundwater discharge? What procedures can we follow to assess human health and ecological risks of groundwater discharge? Answering these questions is fundamental for humans to deal with the challenges of water security and health risks related to groundwater quality. This perspective provides recent progresses, knowledge gaps, and future trends in understanding the linkage between groundwater quality and health.

Abstract:Over the past several decades, China has rapidly depleted groundwater storage, and has lagged in managing and protecting this resource. As a result, dried up rivers, land subsidence, saltwater intrusion, and wetland losses are extensive. To assist with managing this vital groundwater resource, we constructed the first national-scale numerical groundwater flow model of China to provide a comprehensive overview and understanding of the subsurface flow dynamics. The groundwater model is three-dimensional with a 10 km by 10 km horizontal resolution and five discretized vertical layers (up to 1700 m below the land surface). The calibrated model matched calculated to observed water levels and sufficiently reproduced water budgets. The model was used to reconstruct groundwater depletion by retracing the different stages of Chinese economic development. From 1945 to 2020, the northern provinces are characterized by an average groundwater depletion of ∼16.7 km3/yr (equivalent to 30% of the Yellow River's annual flow) while southern China has experienced no substantial groundwater depletion. Groundwater depletion is consistent with a large observed reduction in groundwater discharge as baseflow to the Yellow River (-23%) relative to negligible variation in baseflow in the Yangtze River. Our study provides a holistic tool to support development of nationwide water management strategies and temper the effects of a future water crisis that China's growing economy could propagate at the global scale.

Abstract:Groundwater plays important roles in resource security and ecological maintenance and is sensitive to changes in the natural environment and human activities. It is of paramount importance to investigate the dynamic evolution trend of groundwater and its affecting factors and sustainable development. This paper takes mainland China as the study area, using data sourced from the Groundwater Dynamic Monthly Report, the China Water Resources Bulletin, and the Provincial Water Resources Bulletin. The temporal and space-time evolution trend of groundwater depth in 2011-2020 is determined, along with the correlation between variations in groundwater resources and precipitation, the factors affecting these changes, and the sustainability of groundwater use. The results are as follows: (1) The northern and western regions of mainland China had a greater depth of groundwater compared to the southern and eastern regions. The largest groundwater depth is in the Northwest Rivers Basin (Nw RB), which can reach 17.61-21.10 m, and the shallowest groundwater depth is in the Southeast Rivers Basin (Se RB), only 1.61-5.19 m. (2) Regarding the factors affecting the changes in groundwater resources, precipitation, land use pattern, human activities, and industrial and agricultural water use are highlighted. (3) Overall, the percentage of groundwater in the total water supply has declined. The optimization of groundwater resource allocation and the adjustment of industrial structure have resulted in the coordinated utilization of groundwater resources. The research establishes a scientific foundation for ensuring national water security and promoting sustainable economic and social development.

Abstract:China is facing a groundwater depletion and deterioration crisis, culminating from long-term over-exploitation and groundwater contamination. Aggravating factors include population growth, unprecedented urbanization and climate change. Sustainable groundwater management is called for, however, a valid means for a national-scale assessment of groundwater resource sustainability does not currently exist. Here we present a drivers-pressures-states-impact-response (DPSIR) assessment framework. Based on this framework, groundwater sustainability indices for mainland China's 31 provinces and municipalities were derived, with an average score of 59.5 out of 100, ranging from 47.3 for Tianjin to 72.9 for Tibet. We found that due to fewer Drivers and better States, groundwater resources in southern China are far more sustainable than those in the northern and eastern areas. An appraisal of subcategories shed light on the importance of affording attention to externalities such as societal, economic and environmental factors, which are interrelated as complex systems. Based on the assessment findings, implications for policy and decision-making suggestions for sustainable management of China's groundwater resources are put forward.

Abstract:With rapid socio-economic development, China's coastal areas are among the fastest growing and most economically dynamic regions in the world. Under the influence of climate change and human activities, protecting the quality of coastal groundwater has emerged as one of the key environmental and resource management issues for these areas. This paper reviews (for the first time) groundwater quality data for the coastal basins of China, where over 600 million people live, focussing on key inorganic indicators/pollutants; groundwater salinity, nitrate, fluoride, and arsenic. These pollutants present major water quality issues and are also valuable as indicators of wider processes and influences impacting coastal groundwater quality - e.g. saltwater intrusion, agricultural pollution and release of geo-genic contaminants. We discuss the major drivers causing water quality problems in different regions and assess future trajectories and challenges for controlling changes in coastal groundwater quality in China. Multiple processes, including modern and palaeo seawater/brine migration, groundwater pumping for agricultural irrigation, pollution from agrochemical application, rapid development of aquaculture, urban growth, and water transfer projects, may all be responsible (to different degrees) for changes observed in coastal groundwater quality, and associated long-term health and ecological effects. We discuss implications for sustainable coastal aquifer management in China, arguing that groundwater monitoring and contamination control measures require urgent improvement. The evolution and treatment of coastal groundwater quality problems in China will serve as an important warning and example for other countries facing similar pressures, due to climate change, coastal development, and intensification of anthropogenic activity in coming decades.
Characterizing the river water quality in China: Recent progress and on-going challenges

Abstract:Food production systems, urbanization, and other anthropogenic activities dramatically alter natural hydrological and nutrient cycles and are primarily responsible for water quality impairments in China's rivers. This study compiled a 16-year (2003-2018) dataset of river water quality (161,337 records from 2,424 sites), watershed/landscape features, and meteorological conditions to investigate the spatial water quality patterns and underlying drivers of river impairment (defined as water quality worse than Class V according to China's Environmental Quality Standards for Surface Waters, GB3838-2002) at a national scale. Our analysis provided evidence of a distinct water quality improvement with a gradual decrease in the frequency of prevalence of anoxic conditions, an alleviation of the severity of heavy metal pollution, whereas the cultural eutrophication has only been moderately mitigated between 2003 and 2018. We also identified significant spatial variation with relatively poorer water quality in eastern China, where 17.2% of the sampling sites registered poor water quality conditions, compared with only 4.6% in western China. Total phosphorus (TP) and ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N) are collectively responsible for >85% of the identified incidences of impaired conditions. Bayesian modelling was used to delineate the most significant covariates of TP/NH3-N riverine levels in six large (Liao, Hai, Yellow, Yangtze, Huai, and Pearl) river basins. Water quality impairments are predominantly shaped by anthropogenic drivers (82.5% for TP, 79.5% for NH3-N), whereas natural factors appear to play a secondary role (20.5% for TP, 17.5% for NH3-N). Two indicator variables of urbanization, urban areal extent and nighttime light intensity, were the strongest predictors of riverine TP/NH3-N levels and collectively accounted for most of the ambient nutrient variability. We concluded that there is still a long way to go in order to eradicate eutrophication and realize acceptable ecological conditions. The design of the remedial measures must be tailored to the site-specific landscape characteristics, meteorological conditions, and should also consider the increasing importance of non-point source pollution and internal nutrient loading.

Abstract:Groundwater interactions with surface water and sewers in an urban setting are complex, and classic hydrogeological approaches must be combined with anthropogenic elements to characterize them. The level of detail needed to understand these interactions is illustrated by the analysis of an urban sub‐catchment in the megacity of Shenzhen in southern China that has had a drastic urban expansion in the last 40 years. The study area is characterized by the Yanshanian granite that is widespread across southern‐eastern China. The urban setting is studied using multi‐temporal analysis of satellite images, borehole investigations and field surveys. Given the local hydrostratigraphy, a conceptual model was developed to identify the physical and anthropogenic factors that regulate the urban groundwater system. Based on the conceptual model and the data collected from the field or compiled from the literature, the average annual effective recharge is estimated to be 290 mm/year, after the urbanization process. From rural to urban conditions, it is estimated that the effective recharge increased by 170% and sewers intercept at least 23% of the effective recharge. Groundwater captured by sewers reduces river flows and increases the required capacity and costs for waste water treatment plants.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Assessing groundwater quality is essential for achieving sustainable development goals worldwide. However, it is challenging to conduct hydrochemical analysis and water quality evaluation by traditional methods. To fill this gap, this study analyzed the hydrochemical processes, drinking and irrigation water quality, and associated health risks of 93 groundwater samples from the Sichuan Basin in SW China using advanced unsupervised machine learning, the Combined-Weights Water Quality index, and Monte-Carlo simulations. Groundwater samples were categorized into three types using the self-organizing map with the K-means method: Cluster-1 was Ca-HCO 3 type, Cluster-2 was dominated by Ca-HCO 3 , Na-HCO 3 , and mixed Na-Ca-HCO 3 types, Cluster-3 was Ca-Cl and Ca-Mg-Cl types. Ion ratio diagrams revealed that carbonate dissolution and silicate weathering primarily influenced the hydrochemical characteristics. Cluster-1 samples exhibited high NO 3 − contents from intensive agricultural activities. Cluster-2 samples with high Na + contents were characterized by positive cation exchange, while Cluster-3 samples with elevated Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ contents were influenced by reverse cation exchange. Combined-Weights Water Quality Index indicated that 62.37% of total samples were suitable for drinking, predominantly located in the central part of the study area. Irrigation Water Quality Index revealed that 33.34% of total samples were suitable for irrigation, mainly in the northeastern region. NO 3 − concentration and electrical conductivity (EC) value were the main indicators with the highest sensitivity for drinking and irrigation suitability, respectively. Probabilistic health risk assessments suggested that a significant portion of the groundwater samples posed a health risk greater than 1 to children (63%) and adults (52%) by Monte-Carlo simulation. The high-risk areas (hazard index >4), primarily in the eastern region, are closely associated with nitrate distribution. Sensitivity analysis demonstrated that NO 3 − concentration is the primary indicator accounting for health risks. Reducing the application of nitrogen-based fertilizers on cultivated land is the most effective approach to improve drinking quality and mitigate the associated health risks to the population. This study's findings aim to produce a novel groundwater quality evaluation for promoting the sustainable management and utilization of groundwater resources.

Abstract:This article analyzes part of a ground water flow system in the North China Plain (NCP) subject to severe overexploitation and rapid depletion. A transient ground water flow model was constructed and calibrated to quantify the changes in the flow system since the predevelopment 1950s. The flow model was then used in conjunction with an optimization code to determine optimal pumping schemes that improve ground water management practices. Finally, two management scenarios, namely, urbanization and the South-to-North Water Transfer Project, were evaluated for their potential impacts on the ground water resources in the study area. Although this study focuses on the NCP, it illustrates a general modeling framework for analyzing the sustainability, or the lack thereof, of ground water flow systems driven by similar hydrogeologic and economic conditions. The numerical simulation is capable of quantifying the various components of the overall flow budget and evaluating the impacts of different management scenarios. The optimization modeling allows the determination of the maximum "sustainable pumping" that satisfies a series of prescribed constraints. It can also be used to minimize the economic costs associated with ground water development and management. Furthermore, since the NCP is one of the most water scarce and economically active regions in the world, the conclusions and insights from this study are of general interest and international significance.
Effect of Groundwater Quality on Sustainability of Groundwater Resource: A Case Study in the North China Plain

Abstract:The North China Plain (NCP) is one of the most severe water shortage areas in China. Due to the scarcity of surface water in the NCP, groundwater system is seriously over-exploited and use of nitrogen fertilizers is greatly increasing year by year to improve soil fertility and crop production, causing a variety of environmental issues in the processes of abstracting groundwater. Considering that previous research was limited on approaches to assess sustainability of groundwater through flow modeling and water level decline, this study focuses on addressing the implications of groundwater contaminant for water resource sustainability in the central part of NCP. Based on the previously developed groundwater flow model, a reaction modular code for the reactive transport in three-dimensional aquifers (RT3D) is developed for simulating the reactive process of nitrogen species transport in groundwater system. The management optimization model coupled with the nitrogen reactive transport model under consideration of water quality constraints is then conducted to quantify and improve the sustainability of groundwater utilization in the study area. Thus, the optimal pumping well locations and pumping rates that lead to the maximum total yield or the minimum total management costs subjecting to a series of groundwater level constraints are obtained from the optimization models. Compared with the optimization model without water quality constraints, this study could provide a more useful tool for developing cost-effective strategies for sustainable management of groundwater resource in the NCP, and greatly improve groundwater management level and water quality.
China's "love Canal" Moment?

CREDIT: AP PHOTO/DS In February 2013, a posting in China's burgeoning blogosphere accused business owners in Shandong Province of disposing waste water through injection and contaminating shallow ([ 1 ][2]). This seemingly innocuous message, describing a practice that is not uncommon, ignited a firestorm on the Internet ([ 2 ][3]). The outburst of condemnation and concern caught many observers by surprise and reached the uppermost echelon of the Chinese government ([ 3 ][4]). Ying, Vice Chair of the powerful Development and Reform Commission, declared that needs a law specifically designed for ([ 4 ][5]). Groundwater provides about 20% of total water supplies for China, and 50 to 80% of water in water-scarce north and northwest regions of the country ([ 5 ][6]). However, the outlook for quality is bleak. According to the latest round of water well sampling in 2011 in more than 200 cities and administrative regions by China's Ministry of Land and Resources, fully 55% of more than 4700 samples indicated of category IV or V [on a scale of I to V from the best to poorest quality ([ 6 ][7])]. Still, no one knows the true extent and severity of in China. It is imperative that the Chinese government move aggressively and assertively to combat pollution. The challenges and action of the United States and other developed countries should serve as an example. The United States alone has spent hundreds of billions of dollars on detecting, monitoring, assessing, and remediating contaminated since the 1970s ([ 7 ][8]), when contamination of the neighborhood in New York brought protection to the American public's consciousness and the forefront of national priorities. China should formulate and enforce strong prevention and protection plans, backed by adequate financial resources, sufficient incentives not to pollute, and strong implementation of the existing regulations. This is urgent, as potable water is scarce in the most populated areas and China cannot afford the destruction of its resources. Perhaps the Internet storm of 2013 would be remembered kindly by history if it were to become China's Love Canal moment. 1.
