Abstract:Benzene-cored luminogens with multiple triarylvinyl units are designed and synthesized. These propeller-shaped molecules are nonemissive when dissolved in good solvents, but become highly emissive when aggregated in poor solvents or in the solid state, showing the novel phenomenon of aggregation-induced emission. Restriction of intramolecular motion is identified as the main cause for this effect. Thanks to their high solid-state fluorescence quantum yields (up to unity) and high thermal and morphological stabilities, light-emitting diodes with the luminogens as emitters give sky-blue to greenish-blue light in high luminance and efficiencies of 10800 cd m-2, 5.8 cd A-1, and 2.7%, respectively. The emissions of the nanoaggregates of the luminogens can be quenched exponentially by picric acid, or selectively by Ru3+, with quenching constants up to 105 and similar to 2.0 x 105 L mol-1, respectively, making them highly sensitive (and selective) chemosensors for explosives and metal ions.

Abstract:Aggregation generally quenches the light emissions of chromophoric molecules. In this review, we demonstrate that 1,1-disubstituted 2,3,4,5-tetraphenyl siloles and 2,5-difunctionalized siloles as well as their polymers exhibit the opposite behaviors. Instead of quenching, aggregation has greatly boosted their photoluminescence quantum yields by up to two orders of magnitude, turning them from faint fluorophores into strong emitters. Such “abnormal” phenomenon of “aggregation-induced emission (AIE)” is attributed to restricted intramolecular rotations of the peripheral phenyl rings against the central silole core, which block the nonradiative channel via the rotational energy relaxation processes and effectively populate the radiative decay of the excitons. Utilizing such a novel effect, siloles and their polymers find an array of applications as: sensors for chemicals, explosives, pH, and biomacromolecules (proteins, DNAs and RNAs), indicators for determining CMC and monitoring layer-by-layer self-assembling, biocompatible fluorogens for cell imaging, visualizing agent for DNA gel electrophoresis, biolabels for immunoassay, stimuli-responsive organic nanomaterials, magnetic fluorescent nanoparticles for potential bio-imaging and -separation, and outstanding materials for efficient OLEDs and PV cells.

Abstract:Nonconventional luminophores without large conjugated structures are attracting increasing attention for their unique aggregation-induced emission(AIE) properties and promising applications in optoelectronic and biomedical areas. The emission mechanism, however, remains elusive, which makes rational molecular design difficult. Recently, we proposed the clustering-triggered emission(CTE) mechanism to illustrate the emission. The clustering of electron-rich nonconventional chromophores with π and/or n electrons and consequent electron cloud overlap is crucial to the luminescence. Herein, based on the CTE mechanism, nonaromatic polymers containing multitype heteroatoms( i.e. , O, N, and S) and involving amide(CONH) and sulfide(-S-) groups were designed and synthesized through facile thiol-ene click chemistry. The resulting polymers demonstrated typical concentration-enhanced emission, AIE phenomenon, and excitation-dependent emission. Notably, compared with polysulfides, these polymers exhibited much higher solid-state emission efficiencies, because of the incorporation of amide units, which contributed to the formation of emissive clusters with highly rigidified conformations through effective hydrogen bonding. Furthermore, distinct persistent cryogenic phosphorescence or even room temperature phosphorescence(RTP) was noticed. These photophysical behaviors can well be rationalized in terms of the CTE mechanism, indicating the feasibility of rational molecular design and luminescence regulation.

Abstract:Nonaromatic photoluminescent polymers have attracted great attention due to their intriguing photophysical properties and promising implications in optoelectronic and biological areas. The luminescence from these nonconventional luminophores can be well rationalized by the clustering‐triggered emission mechanism. Sulfur, although as an n‐electron‐rich element with big radius, is not been widely utilized in construction of nonconventional luminophores despite of its potential competitiveness in nonaromatic photoluminescent polymers. Herein, the "click" type Michael polyaddition is utilized to construct sulfur‐bearing nonconventional luminophores, and two sulfur enriched nonaromatic poly(thioether sulfone)s (PES) are obtained, which demonstrate fluorescence‐phosphorescence dual emission. More investigations concerning the monomer of bis(vinylsulfonyl)methane are further proceeded to support acquired results. Finally, the application of explosive detection by the prepared PES is also conducted.

Abstract:Most nonconventional luminogens enjoy good water solubility and biocompatibility, showing unique application prospects in fields like biological imaging. Although clustering-triggered emission (CTE) mechanisms have been proposed to explain such emissions, it has not been thoroughly elucidated, which limits their development and application. Herein, the photoluminescence properties of polyacrylamide prepared by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization aqueous solution are utilized to further investigate the effects of changes in concentration, in order to elucidate the emission mechanism through transmission electron microscopy (TEM), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and theoretical calculation. The results showed that the size distribution, morphology, and distance between the polymer clusters formed in the water solution are successfully correlated with the cluster emission centers. The emission mechanism of nonconventional luminogens solutions is more clearly and intuitively elucidated, which has a promoting effect on the emission and application of this field. It provides a strategy a strategy to clarify the CTE mechanism of nonconventional luminogens solution more clearly.

Abstract:Nonaromatic luminophores without remarkable conjugates have aroused great attention. Their emission mechanism, however, remains an open question. Meanwhile, previous studies generally focus on aliphatic amine and/or carbonyl-containing systems; those with merely oxygen moieties (i.e., ether, hydroxyl) are scarcely touched. Recently, the clustering-triggered emission (CTE) mechanism is proposed to rationalize the emission of nonconventional luminophores, according to which compounds bearing purely oxygen moieties can also be emissive. To check this conjecture, herein, both nonaromatic compound of xylitol and polymers of PEG and F127 are studied, which are found to be emissive in concentrated solutions and solids. Furthermore, cryogenic-persistent phosphorescence of the compounds and even persistent room temperature phosphorescence of xylitol crystals are observed. Additionally, their potential application as Fe3+ sensors is demonstrated. These results not only verify the rationality of the CTE mechanism but also suggest the possibility to discover and design new luminophores according to it.

Abstract:Development of new aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogens has been a hot research topic because they thoroughly solve the notorious aggregation-caused quenching effect confronted in conventional fluorogens and their promising applications in, for example, organic light-emitting diodes, chemo-and biosensors and bioimaging. Many AIE luminogens (AIEgens) have been prepared but most of them are silole, tetraphenylethene, distyrylanthracene, and their derivatives. In this work, based on the skeleton of tetraphenylpyrazine (TPP), a new AIEgen, named TPP-PDCV, is generated by functionalizing TPP with malonitrile group. TPP-PDCV can serve as a sensitive ratiometric fluorescent probe for detecting hydrogen sulfide with high speciality and low detection limit of down to 0.5 x 10(-6) m. The mechanism for such detection is fully investigated and deciphered. Unlike most reported mechanochromic AIEgens, which undergo turn-off or -on emission or emission bathochromic shift in the presence of external stimuli, TPP-PDCV exhibits an abnormal and reversible mechanochromism with hypsochromic effect. These indicate that TPP-PDCV possesses a huge potential for high-tech applications through rational modification of TPP core.

Abstract:Nonconventional luminescent polymers have emerged as promising materials due to their unique chemical structures and intriguing photophysical properties. This review systematically explores strategies for regulating these properties, focused on the interplay between electron‐rich subunits, clustering, and conformational rigidity. The potential applications of these materials across varying fields are also delved, leveraging their diverse emission species, biocompatibility, and solution‐processability. Nonconventional luminescent polymers have gained significant interest due to their outstanding water solubility, biocompatibility, solution‐processability, and scalability. Unlike traditional aromatic luminogens with extended π‐conjugation, their distinctive photophysical properties arise from a mechanism known as clustering‐triggered emission (CTE). CTE involves the clustering of electron‐rich subunits, leading to enhanced electron delocalization and conformational rigidification, ultimately boosting photoluminescence (PL). Despite substantial advancements, challenges remain in optimizing the emission efficiency and PL tunability of these polymers. This review delves into the CTE mechanism, examining recent advances in regulating the photophysical properties of nonconventional luminescent polymers. The aim is to uncover universal principles and underlying mechanisms across diverse systems, providing a theoretical foundation for further development and potential applications of these materials in fields such as bioimaging, sensing, and optoelectronics.

Abstract:Luminescent materials without conventional aromatic groups have attracted extensive attention in recent years. However, the luminescence mechanism has been obscure and debatable. In the present study, based on oligo(maleic anhydride)s (OMAhs), alternative polymer of poly[(maleic anhydride)-alt-(2,4,4-trimethyl- 1-pentene)] (PMP) and copolymers containing different ratios of OMAhs, we have proposed that the luminescence of OMAhs stems from the cluster. Moreover, a mechanism of clusteroluminescence was studied in detail with the assistance of theoretical simulation, which attributed the phenomenon to the intra- and inter-chain n -> pi* interaction of carbonyl groups of SAh units in OMAhs. Thus, the proposed study will give insights into designing luminescent materials with nonconventional groups.

Abstract:π-Conjugated chromophores have been investigated for many years and successful theoretical models have been developed to explain their photophysical properties. However, materials have appeared sporadically that do not fit within these existing models. Some of these materials possess entirely nonconjugated structures based on saturated C–C, C–O or C–N bonds, but their aggregates or solid-state forms show bright visible emission. This phenomenon is termed as clusterization-triggered emission (CTE) and the materials possessing the property are labeled clusteroluminogens. In this review, we provide a brief summary of the recent development of clusteroluminogens. The materials are classified into three categories: polymers (natural and synthetic polymers), small molecules (with and without aromatic rings) and metal clusters. Possible luminescence mechanisms underpinning the different categories of clusteroluminogens are analyzed individually. Finally, we put forward a comprehensive theory of the through-space conjugation (TSC) for these chromophores. Based on the CTE effect and TSC theory, various applications have been envisioned, for example in the areas of process monitoring, structural visualization, sensors, and probes. It is anticipated that this new research direction will bring many breakthroughs, not only in the theoretical areas, but also in these advanced applications of light-emitting materials.

Abstract:Nonconventional biomacromolecular luminogens have attracted extensive interest due to their fundamental importance and potential applications in diverse areas. To explore novel luminogens and, moreover, to gain deeper insights into their emission mechanism, we study the emission behaviors of sodium alginate (SA), a natural anionic polysaccharide composed of mannuronic (M) and guluronic acids (G). We find that the luminescence from aqueous SA solutions exhibits distinct concentration enhanced emission and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics. Meanwhile, the ratio of M/G also matters. Rheological measurements reveal the distinct regimes of the solutions, which are consistent with the observed emission, indicative of strong association between the chain entanglement and emission. Moreover, we observe persistent room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in the amorphous SA solids, which is a rare case even in pure organic aromatic luminogens. Such unique emission can be remarkably enhanced via coordination with Ca2+ ions. These emission behaviors can be well rationalized by the clustering-triggered emission (CTE) mechanism. Namely, the emission is caused by the electron cloud overlap due to the clustering of oxygen atoms and carboxylate units, together with conformation rigidification. Owing to its biocompatibility, intrinsic emission, and, moreover, persistent RTP, SA shows great potential for anticounterfeiting, encryption, intracellular imaging, and so on.

Abstract:Luminescence is one of the most important properties for metal nanoclusters; however, clearly revealing its origin remains challenging. The different luminescence properties of the two prototypical 8e nanoclusters Au 11 and Au 13 remain elusive—Au 11 is always nonluminescent, whereas Au 13 is luminescent. In this work, by using a designed unique aromatic ligand (quinoline-2-thiol), we obtained new atomically precise phosphine-thiolate-protected neutral Au 11 - SH and cationic Au 13 - SH . In comparison with the classic phosphine-halide-protected Au 11 - Cl and Au 13 - Cl , the Cl-to-thiol alteration triggered room-temperature luminescence of the Au 11 core and dramatically modulated that of the Au 13 core. Ultrafast ultraviolet/infrared (UV/IR) spectroscopy, which is sensitive to organic aromatic groups, together with ultrafast transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy unprecedently revealed a relaxation process from the ligand to core state affecting the dynamics in excited states and some critical intermediate states favouring efficient room-temperature emission of these nanoclusters. This work provides some new insights into the origin of photoluminescence of metal nanoclusters and opens an avenue to modulate the dynamics of their excited states using aromatic ligands, which would have direct applications in lighting, light harvesting, and photocatalysis.

Abstract:A group of organic chromophoric molecules including siloles, pyrans, tetraphenylethylenes and fulvenes, are designed and synthesized. Light emissions of conventional luminescent materials are often quenched by aggregate formation. These molecules, however, become stronger luminophors when aggregated although they are practically nonemissive in their dilute solutions. By varying their packing structures in the aggregation states, emission color ranging from blue to red can be achieved. The emission of falvenes can also be controlled by changing their morphology. While they emit a faint light in the amorphous state, their crystal forms are strongly luminescent. Intermolecular interaction or restriction of intramolecular rotation in different states may be responsible for such behaviors. Thanks to such effects, the molecules can be employed as sensors for the detection of explosives, organic solvent vapors, solution pH, and biomacromolecules. Further modification of their structures by molecular engineering endeavors may generate materials that can find an array of applications in optical display systems and as biological probes.
Nonconventional Luminescent Piperazine-Containing Hyperbranched Polysiloxanes with Pure n-electron

Abstract:Nonconventional luminogens with high quantum yield (QY) possess very potential applications in various fields. However, the preparation of such luminogens remains a great challenge. Herein, the first example of piperazine-containing hyperbranched polysiloxane exhibiting blue and green fluorescence is reported under the irradiation of different excitation wavelength and a high QY of 20.9%. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results revealed that the through-space conjugation (TSC) within the clusters of N and O atoms is produced via the induction of multiple intermolecular hydrogen bonds and flexible SiO units, which is accountable for the fluorescence. Meanwhile, the introduction of the rigid piperazine units not only rigidifies the conformation, but also enhances the TSC. In addition, the fluorescence of both P1 and P2 shows concentration-, excitation-, and solvent-dependent emission, especially exhibits significant pH-dependent emission and obtains an ultrahigh QY of 82.6% at pH 5. The synthetic luminogens show excellent applications in fluorescence detection for Fe3+ and Co2+ , information encryption, and fluorescent film. This study provides a novel strategy to rationally design high-efficiency nonconventional luminogens.

Abstract:Nonconventional luminophores devoid of remarkable conjugates have attracted considerable attention due to their unique luminescence behaviors, updated luminescence mechanism of organics and promising applications in optoelectronic, biological and medical fields. Unlike classic luminogens consisting of molecular segments with greatly extended electron delocalization, these unorthodox luminophores generally possess nonconjugated structures based on subgroups such as ether (-O-), hydroxyl (-OH), halogens, carbonyl (C=O), carboxyl (-COOH), cyano (C=N), thioether (-S-), sulfoxide (S=O), sulfone (O=S=O), phosphate, and aliphatic amine, as well as their grouped functionalities like amide, imide, anhydride and ureido. They can exhibit intriguing intrinsic luminescence, generally featuring concentration-enhanced emission, aggregation-induced emission, excitation-dependent luminescence and prevailing phosphorescence. Herein, we review the recent progress in exploring these nonconventional luminophores and discuss the current challenges and future perspectives. Notably, different mechanisms are reviewed and the clustering-triggered emission (CTE) mechanism is highlighted, which emphasizes the clustering of the above mentioned electron rich moieties and consequent electron delocalization along with conformation rigidification. The CTE mechanism seems widely applicable for diversified natural, synthetic and supramolecular systems.

Abstract:Nonconjugated clusteroluminogens (CLgens), such as proteins and polystyrene, have become increas-ingly important in photophysics. They show many advantages over traditional conjugated dyes with fused aromatic rings in biological applications. However, CLgens have historically been unheeded because of their weak visible emissions in the aggre-gate state, namely clusteroluminescence (CL). Changing the electronic structures of CLgens by precisely regulating the intramolecular through-space interaction (TSI) to improve their photophy-sical properties remains an enormous challenge. Herein, we propose a general strategy to construct a higher-level intramolecular TSI, namely secondary TSI constructed by the primary TSI and a TSI linker, in multi-aryl-substituted alkanes (MAAs). By intro-ducing methyl and phenyl into 1,1,3,3-tetraphenyl-propane, the modified MAAs show efficient CL with high luminescence quantum yield (-40%) and long emission wavelength (-530 nm). Then, compre-hensive experiments and theoretical studies demon-strate that molecular rigidity and overlap of subunits play pivotal roles in improving these hierarchical TSIs. This work not only provides a feasible strategy to achieve controllable manipulation of hierarchical TSIs and CL but also establishes comprehensive TSI-based aggregate photophysics.
