Abstract:The control of the emission properties of synthetic organic molecules through molecular design has led to the development of high-performance optoelectronic devices with tunable emission colours, high quantum efficiencies and efficient energy/charge transfer processes. However, the task of generating excited states with long lifetimes has been met with limited success, owing to the ultrafast deactivation of the highly active excited states. Here, we present a design rule that can be used to tune the emission lifetime of a wide range of luminescent organic molecules, based on effective stabilization of triplet excited states through strong coupling in H-aggregated molecules. Our experimental data revealed that luminescence lifetimes up to 1.35 s, which are several orders of magnitude longer than those of conventional organic fluorophores, can be realized under ambient conditions. These results outline a fundamental principle to design organic molecules with extended lifetimes of excited states, providing a major step forward in expanding the scope of organic phosphorescence applications.

Abstract:Nonconventional luminophores have attracted significant attention for their unique photophysical properties and potential applications in different areas. Unlike classic luminogens consisting of remarkably conjugated segments, nonconventional luminophores generally possess merely nonconjugated or short-conjugated structures based on electron-rich units. Fluorescence, phosphorescence, and even color tunable room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) could be readily obtained from these unique luminophores. Herein, we summarized recent advances in the phosphorescence of nonconventional luminophores, with focus on RTP and color tunable RTP. The clustering-triggered emission (CTE) mechanism could be applied to explain the luminescence as clustering-triggered phosphorescence (CTP). Furthermore, strategies toward the RTP regulation are summarized, and corresponding applications are demonstrated.

Abstract:Abstract Circularly polarized organic afterglow (CPOA) with both long-lived room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is currently attracting great interest, but the development of multicolor-tunable CPOA in a single-component material remains a formidable challenge. Here, we report an efficient strategy to achieve multicolor CPOA molecules through chiral clusterization by implanting chirality center into non-conjugated organic cluster. Owing to excitation-dependent emission of clusters, highly efficient and significantly tuned CPOA emissions from blue to yellowish-green with dissymmetry factor over 2.3 × 10 −3 and lifetime up to 587 ms are observed under different excitation wavelengths. With the distinguished color-tunable CPOA, the multicolor CPL displays and visual RTP detection of ultraviolent light wavelength are successfully constructed. These results not only provide a new paradigm for realization of multicolor-tunable CPOA materials in single-component molecular systems, but also offer new opportunities for expanding the applicability of CPL and RTP materials for diversified applications.

Highly Efficient and Robust Full-Color Organic Afterglow through 2D Superlattices Embedment

Abstract:Purely organic afterglow (POA) originating from the slow radiative decay of stabilized triplet excited states has shown amazing potential in many fields. However, achieving highly stable POA with high phosphorescent quantum yield (PhQY) and long lifetime is still a formidable challenge owing to the intrinsically active and sensitive nature of triplet excitons. Here, triplet excitons of phosphors are protected and stabilized by embedding in tricomponent trihapto self-assembled 2D hydrogen-bonded superlattices, which not only enables deep-blue POA with high PhQY (up to 65%), ultralong lifetime (over 1300 ms) and the highest figure-of-merit at room temperature, but also achieves excellent stability capable of resisting quenching effects of oxygen, solvent, pressure, light, and heat. In addition, the POA color is tuned from deep-blue to red via efficient Förster resonance energy transfer from the deep-blue POA emitters to the fluorophores. Moreover, with the high-performance, robust, and full-color POA materials, flexible anti-counterfeit displays and direct-current (DC)-driven lifetime-encrypted color Morse Code applications are facilely realized.

Abstract:Full-color luminophores have advanced applications in materials and engineering, but constructing color-tunable clusteroluminescence (CL) from nonconjugated polymers based on through-space interactions remains a huge challenge. Herein, we develop phosphine-capped nonconjugated polyesters exhibiting blue-to-red CL (400-700 nm) based on phosphine-initiated copolymerization of epoxides and cyclic anhydrides, especially P1-0.5TPP, which exhibits red CL (610 nm) with a high quantum yield of 32%. Experiments and theoretical calculations disclose that the phosphine-capped effect in polyesters brings about conformational changes and induces phosphine-ester clusters by through-space (n,π*) interactions. Moreover, CL colors and efficiencies can be easily tailored by types of phosphines, compositions and structures of polyesters, and concentration. Significantly, the role of polymer motions (group, segmental, and chain motions) on CL originating from microregions inside polyesters is revealed. Further, phosphine-capped nonconjugated polyesters are demonstrated to be nonconjugated dyes and fluorescent fibers and are also used for multicolor light-emitting diodes including white light. This work not only provides an engineering strategy based on the end-group effect to prepare full-color clusteroluminogens but also broadens the prospects for material applications.

Abstract:Clusterization‐triggered emission is emerging as a powerful strategy leading to useful luminescence such as room‐temperature phosphoresce (CTE‐RTP), yet people's recognition on CTE‐RTP is still very limited, so that it remains challenging to achieve multicolor CTE‐RTP due to the difficulty in tailoring the clustering state of the atoms with lone pair electrons. The authors report that phosphorescence resonance energy transfer (PRET) can occur in the CTE‐RTP system, which enables fine‐tuning the color of the CTE‐RTP. Since the CTE‐RTP is a broad band in the range of 400–700 nm, and the dipole orientations are diverse in the CTE material, PRET can always occur between the CTE‐RTP and arbitrary fluorescent dyes to obtain delayed fluorescence ranging from green to near infrared. Because the lifetime of the delayed fluorescence depends on their molecular structure, dynamic afterglow can be facilely achieved in the ensemble of a PRET‐CTE‐RTP system, making it very appealing in anticounterfeiting.

Abstract:Multicolor luminescent materials with tunable properties hold great promise for a wide range of applications in materials science. Unfortunately, the conventional approach to achieving multicolor emissions by blending multiple types of fluorophores is hindered by limitations, notably, spectral instability, aggregation-caused quenching, and energy transfer. The pursuit of multicolor emissions from a single type of fluorophore in the solid state has, until now, remained a formidable challenge. In this study, we have introduced N,N′-diphenyl dihydrodibenzo[a,c]-phenazines (DPAC), augmented with two o-carboranyl units, to create a novel fluorophore CbDPAC. The CbDPAC crystal exhibits three distinct emission bands peaking at 405, 470, and 620 nm, respectively, arising from a rich intermolecular interaction network that generates novel emission centers, such as conformational isomers and excimers. This work inspires the rational molecular engineering of smart fluorophores with tailorable properties and inaugurates diverse possibilities for stimuli-responsive luminescent technologies.

Abstract:Abstract Organic emitters with persistent phosphorescence have shown potential application in optoelectronic devices. However, rational design and phosphorescence tuning are still challenging. Here, a series of metal-free luminophores without heavy atoms and carbonyl groups from commercial/lab-synthesized carbazole and benzene were synthesized to realize tunable molecular emission from fluorescence to phosphorescence by simply substituent variation. All the molecules emit blue fluorescence in both solution and solid state. Upon removal of excitation source, the fluorinated luminophores show obvious phosphorescence. The lab-synthesized carbazole based molecules exhibit a huge lifetime difference to the commercially purchased ones due to the existence of isomer in the latter samples. The small energy gap between singlet and triplet state and low reorganization energy help enhance intersystem crossing to contribute to a more competitive radiative process from triplet to ground state. Blue and white organic light-emitting devices are fabricated by using fluorinated luminophore as emitting layer.

Abstract:The development of polymer‐based persistent luminescence materials with color‐tunable organic afterglow and multiple responses is highly desirable for the applications in anti‐counterfeiting, flexible displays and data‐storage. However, achieving efficient persistent luminescence from a single‐phosphor system with multiple responses remains a challenging task. Herein, a hierarchical dual‐mode emission system is developed by doping 9H‐pyrido[3,4‐b]indole (PI2) into an amorphous polyacrylamide matrix, which exhibits color‐tunable afterglow due to excitation‐, temperature‐ and humidity‐dependence. Notably, the coexistence of isolated state and J‐aggregate state of the guest molecule not only provides excitation‐dependent afterglow color, but also leads to hierarchical temperature‐dependent afterglow color resulting from different thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and ultralong organic phosphorescence (UOP) behaviors of the isolated and aggregated states. The complex responsiveness based on the hierarchical dual‐mode emission can serve for security features through inkjet printing and ink‐writing. These findings may provide further insight into the regulated persistent luminescence by isolated and aggregated phosphors in doped polymer systems and expand the scope of stimuli‐responsive organic afterglow materials for broader applications.

A Fluorescence-Phosphorescence-Phosphorescence Triple-Channel Emission Strategy for Full-Color Luminescence

Abstract:Organic luminogens constitute promising prototypes for various optoelectronic applications. Since gaining distinct color emissions normally requires the alternation of the conjugated backbone, big issues remain in material synthetic cost and skeleton compatibility while pursuing full-color luminescence. Upon a facile one-step coupling, three simple but smart perchalcogenated (O, S, and Se) arenes are synthesized. They exhibit strong luminescent tricolor primaries (i.e., blue, green, and red, respectively) in the solid state with a superior quantum yield up to >40% (5-10 times higher than that in corresponding solutions). The properties originate from a fluorescence-phosphorescence-phosphorescence triple-channel emission effect, which is regulated by S and Se heavy atoms-dependent intersystem crossing upon molecular packing, as well as Se-Se atom interaction-caused energy splittings. Consequently, full-color luminescence, including a typical white-light luminescence with a Commission Internationale de I'Eclairage coordinate of (0.30, 0.35), is realized by complementarily incorporating these tricolor luminescent materials in the film. Moreover, mechanochromic luminescent color conversions are also observed to achieve the fine-tuning of the luminescent tints. This strategy can be smart to address full-color luminescence on the same molecular skeleton, showing better material compatibility as an alternative to the traditional multiple-luminophore engineering.

Abstract:Color-tunable dual-mode organic afterglow excited by ultraviolet (UV) and white light was achieved from classical aggregation-caused quenching compounds for the first time. Specifically, two luminescent systems, which could produce significant organic afterglow composed of persistent thermally activated delayed fluorescence and ultralong organic phosphorescence under ambient conditions, were constructed by doping fluorescein sodium and calcein sodium into aluminum sulfate. Their lifetimes surpassed 600 ms, and the dopant concentrations were as low as 5×10-6 wt %. Moreover, the persistent luminescence colors of the materials could be tuned from blue to green and then to yellow by simply varying the concentrations of guest compounds or the temperature in the range of 260-340 K. Inspired by these exciting results, the afterglow materials were used for UV- and white-light-manipulated anti-counterfeiting and preparation of elastomers with different colors of persistent luminescence.
Simple Phenazine‐Based Compounds Realizing Superior Multicolored Emission

Abstract:A new family of phenazine‐based compounds is synthesized to achieve multicolored emission from deep blue (418 nm) to red (625 nm). Emitters have unique hybrid local and charge‐transfer excited states for S1, T1, T2, and even higher‐layer excited states, respectively, while all emitters possess thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) nature. The rigid structure of phenazine and steric hindrance of donors are sufficiently utilized to suppress the nonradiative consumption, manipulate the configurations of excited states, and regulate the luminescence color. Organic light‐emitting diodes exhibit superior multicolored emission with 10.74% external quantum efficiency. Employing such kind of simple‐structured and easily synthesized compounds to realize multicolored emission would provide a new strategy for designing high‐performance and multicolored TADF materials. The phenazine group is utilized for the first time to synthesize multicolored thermally activated delayed fluorescence molecules for realizing the emission from deep blue to red. They feature unique hybrid local and charge‐transfer‐type excited states, ultrahigh exciton utilization efficiencies, and 10.74% maximum external quantum efficiency. These superior performances make them promising candidates for organic light‐emitting diodes.

Abstract:Achieving persistent room‐temperature phosphorescence (p‐RTP), particularly those of tunable full‐colors, from pure organic amorphous polymers is attractive but challenging. Particularly, those with tunable multicolor p‐RTP in response to excitation wavelength and time are highly important but both fundamentally and technically underexplored. Here, a facile and general strategy toward color‐tunable p‐RTP from blue to orange‐red based on amidation grafting of luminophores onto sodium alginate (SA) chains, resulting in amorphous polymers with distinct p‐RTP and even impressively excitation‐dependent and time‐dependent afterglows is reported. p‐RTP is associated with the unique semi‐rigidified SA chains, effective hydrogen bonding network, and oxygen barrier properties of SA, whereas excitation‐dependent and time‐dependent afterglows should stem from the formation of diversified p‐RTP emissive species with comparable but different lifetimes. These results outline a rational strategy toward amorphous smart luminophores with colorful, excitation‐dependent, and time‐dependent p‐RTP, excellent solution processability, and film‐forming ability for versatile applications.

Abstract:π-Conjugated chromophores have been investigated for many years and successful theoretical models have been developed to explain their photophysical properties. However, materials have appeared sporadically that do not fit within these existing models. Some of these materials possess entirely nonconjugated structures based on saturated C–C, C–O or C–N bonds, but their aggregates or solid-state forms show bright visible emission. This phenomenon is termed as clusterization-triggered emission (CTE) and the materials possessing the property are labeled clusteroluminogens. In this review, we provide a brief summary of the recent development of clusteroluminogens. The materials are classified into three categories: polymers (natural and synthetic polymers), small molecules (with and without aromatic rings) and metal clusters. Possible luminescence mechanisms underpinning the different categories of clusteroluminogens are analyzed individually. Finally, we put forward a comprehensive theory of the through-space conjugation (TSC) for these chromophores. Based on the CTE effect and TSC theory, various applications have been envisioned, for example in the areas of process monitoring, structural visualization, sensors, and probes. It is anticipated that this new research direction will bring many breakthroughs, not only in the theoretical areas, but also in these advanced applications of light-emitting materials.

Abstract:A series of poly(1,4-dihydropyridine)s (PDHPs) were successfully synthesized via one-pot metal-free multicomponent polymerization of diacetylenic esters, benzaldehyde, and aniline derivatives. These PDHPs without traditional luminescent units were endowed with tunable triplet energy levels by through-space conjugation from the formation of different cluster sizes. The large and compact clusters can effectively extend the phosphorescence wavelength. The triplet excitons can be stabilized by using benzophenone as a rigid matrix to achieve room-temperature phosphorescence. The nonconjugated polymeric clusters can show a phosphorescence emission up to 645 nm. A combination of static and dynamic laser light scattering was conducted for insight into the structural information on formed clusters in the host matrix melt. Moreover, both the fluorescence and phosphorescence emission can be easily tuned by the variation of the excitation wavelength, the concentration, and the molecular weight of the guest polymers. This work provides a unique insight for designing polymeric host-guest systems and a new strategy for the development of long wavelength phosphorescence materials.

Here, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were doped with aromatic acid molecules of different conjugation levels that can generate various interactions, and a full-color gamut long afterglow emitting luminescent material with blue to red light was successfully prepared under the same excitation. Not only does it achieve adjustable afterglow color, but it also has long afterglow emission (447.02 ms). The crystallinity of CNC and its strong hydrogen bonding with doped molecules endow aromatic acid molecules with a liquid nitrogen like environment, resulting in a multi-color afterglow under strong conformational hardening. This simple and low-cost method for preparing powder materials with all color gamut adjustable p-RTP emission has proven to have great commercial prospects in the field of multiple anti-counterfeiting encryption.
