Abstract:Electrochemical reduction of N-2 represents a very attractive approach for sustainable NH3 production at environmental temperature and pressure. The design of highly branched Pd-based nanoarchitectonics is very important for the electrocatalytic N-2 reduction reaction (NRR). Herein, we propose a very simple synthetic method for direct fabrication of unique bi-metallic PdRu nanorod assemblies (PdRu NRAs) with high yield in an aqueous solution. Owing to their branched shape together with bi-metallic compositions, the self-supported PdRu NRAs assembled with staggered nanorods show high catalytic activity and superior durability for the NRR. The presented direct synthetic strategy is very valuable for the design of active branched metallic catalysts for the NRR.

Abstract:Porous Pt-based nanostructures are highly promising electrocatalysts for fuel cells, because of their high catalytic surface area and sufficient catalytically active sites. Herein, we adopt a facile method in aqueous solution to synthesize the Au@PtPd mesoporous nanorod (Au@PtPd MNR) in which a Au nanorod (NR) serves as core, and mesoporous PtPd acts as shell. Because of the mesoporous core–shell structure and composition effect, Au@PtPd MNR exhibits superior catalytic activity and durability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), as compared with PtPd mesoporous sphere (MS), Au@Pt MNR, and commercial Pt/C catalyst. This synthetic strategy is appropriate for preparation of other mesoporous core–shell structures for various promising applications.

Abstract:Platinum (Pt)-based multi-metallic nanostructures show great promise as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cell cathodes. Herein, we report a simple, one-step surfactant-directed synthetic strategy to directly synthesize tri-metallic PtPdNi mesoporous nanospheres (PtPdNi MNs) in a high yield. The synthesis could be accomplished in aqueous solution at mild reaction temperature (40 degrees C) without needing any organic solvent, yielding well-dispersed PtPdNi MNs with uniform shape and narrow size distribution. Benefitting from their unique mesoporous and highly open structure and tri-metallic composition, the as-synthesized PtPdNi MNs demonstrate superior catalytic activity and stability for ORR in acidic solution in comparison with PtPdNi nanodendrites (PtPdNi NDs), PtPd MNs and commercial Pt/C catalyst. Abstract:Certain bimetallic nanocrystals (NCs) possess promising catalytic properties for electrochemical energy conversion. Herein, we report a facile method for the one-step synthesis of porous dendritic PtNi NCs in aqueous solution at room temperature that contrasts with the traditional multistep thermal decomposition approach. The dendritic PtNi NCs assembled by interconnected arms are efficient catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction. This direct and efficient method is favorable for the up-scaled synthesis of active catalysts used in electrochemical applications.
Intermetallic Pd3Pb Ultrathin Nanoplate-Constructed Flowers with Low-Coordinated Edge Sites Boost Oxygen Reduction Performance

Abstract:Although tremendous efforts have been devoted to exploring non-Pt based electrocatalysts toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), achievements in both catalytic activity and durability are still far from satisfactory. Here, we report a facile approach for the synthesis of intermetallic Pd3Pb ultrathin nanoplate-constructed flowers. Such highly opened hierarchical nanostructures with an ordered phase and low-coordinated edge sites exhibited a substantially enhanced activity toward the ORR. Especially, the intermetallic Pd3Pb nanoflowers achieved a record-breaking mass activity (1.14 mA μgPd-1) in an alkaline solution at 0.9 V vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode among the reported Pd-based ORR electrocatalysts to date, which was 1.8, 3.9 and 11.4 times higher than those of intermetallic Pd3Pb nanocubes, Pd3Pb dendrites and commercial Pt/C, respectively. More importantly, the intermetallic Pd3Pb nanoflowers also showed a higher durability with only 23.7% loss in mass activity after 10 000 cycles compared to the commercial Pt/C (35% loss in mass activity) due to their chemically stable intermetallic structures.

Abstract:Incorporating Pt with core metals into Pt-based core-shell catalysts is regarded as a promising strategy to substantially enhance the catalytic properties towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells due to the synergetic effect between distinct metals. In this wok, ultrathin Pt skins with two atomic layers were epitaxially coated on as-prepared icosahedral Au50Pd50, Au60Pd40 and Au-66 Pd-34 nanocrystal seeds, which are constructed with alloyed cores and Pd shells with different thickness. Through electron microscopic characterizations, Pd interlayers with tunable thickness of 3, 6, and 12 atomic layers can be found in the Au66Pd34@Pt, Au60Pd40@Pt and Au50Pd50@Pt icosahedra, respectively. These icosahedral AuPd@Pd@Pt nanocrystals show substantially enhanced activities and durabilities in electrocatalytic measurements towards ORR compared to Au75Pd25@Pt icosahedra without Pd interlayer and commercial Pt/C catalysts. Specifically, Au-60 Pd-40@Pt icosahedra with 6 atomically thick Pd interlayer display the best electrocatalytic performances, whose mass activities before and after durability tests of 50,000 cycles are 11.6 and 30.2 times, respectively, as high as that of the commercial Pt/C. Abstract:Electro-catalytic activity of Pt in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) depends strongly on its morphology. For an understanding of how morphology affects the catalytic properties of Pt, the investigation of Pt materials having well-defined morphologies is required. However, the challenges remain in rational and facile synthesis of Pt particles with tuneable well-defined morphology. A promising approach for the controlled synthesis of Pt particles is 'self-assembly of building blocks'. Here, we report a unique synthesis method to control Pt morphology by using a self-assembly route, where nanoflower, nanowire, nanosheet and nanotube morphologies of Pt particles have been produced in a controlled manner. In the growth mechanism, Pt nanoparticles (5-11 nm) are rapidly prepared by using NaBH<sub>4</sub> as a reductant, followed by their agglomeration promoted by adding 1,2-ethylenediamine. The morphology of the resulting Pt particles can be easily controlled by tuning hydrophobic/hydrophilic interactions by the addition of isopropanol and H<sub>2</sub>O. Of the Pt particles prepared using this method, Pt nanotubes show the highest ORR catalytic activity in an acid electrolyte with an onset potential of 1.02 V vs. RHE.

Abstract:The design of Pd-based nanoarchitectures with controllable compositions and morphologies is important for electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media. Herein, mesoporous PdRu nanocrystals (PdRu MNCs) have been developed via a soft template under mild reduction conditions. The mesoporous structure provides more active sites for ORR, and the electronic effect between Pd and Ru elements leads to lower adsorption of O onto Pd. Therefore, the PdRu MNCs show better ORR activity and stability than commercial Pt/C in alkaline electrolytes. Abstract:Ultrasmall PtNi bimetallic nanoclusters (NCs) were synthesized and employed as effective electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). PtNi NCs capped by polyvinyl pyrrolidone were synthesized through a wet chemical approach with optical property examined by UV-visible absorbance. The surface micro-structure and electronic structure of these bimetallic NCs were measured by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and other techniques. The bimetallic PtNi NCs demonstrated effective activity toward ORR in alkaline electrolyte and their electrocatalytic properties were modulated by the variation of Pt-to-Ni ratio. Among the series of samples tested, Pt67Ni33 NCs exhibited the best activity, superior than monometallic nickel nanoparticles, platinum nanoclusters and other alloyed samples, within the terms of onset potential, kinetic current density and durability. Pt67Ni33 NCs exhibited almost identical specific activity but markedly higher long-term durability than commercial Pt/C. The method here may provide a generic approach for fabricating ultrasmall bimetallic alloyed nanoclusters with extraordinary activity and desirable stability for ORR.

Abstract:Developing non-noble metal electrocatalytic cathode materials with high catalytic activity, low cost and good durability is crucial for fuel cell applications on a large scale. Herein, we presented a novel Ni/NiO/rGO nanobush by controlled hydrolysis, anchoring nucleation and microwave-assisted hydrothermal process, as a highly effective cathode catalyst material for oxygen reduction reactions in an alkaline medium. The as-prepared Ni/NiO/rGO nanobush not only had abundant interface structures that can promote electron transfer but also maximized the exposure of active sites. The effects of complexing agent and precipitant on the interrelated hierarchical structure, the function of the composite interfaces and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance of the composite catalyst were subsequently investigated in detail. As a novel non-noble metal ORR electrocatalyst, Ni/NiO/rGO nanobush, of which the half-wave potential was 0.812 V, presented excellent catalytic efficiency in an alkaline solution with an electron transfer number of 3.92. After reacting for 20000 s, the retention rate of its current density still reached 87.9% and the current density was only lost by 9% after reacting for 1000s through the anti-methanol poisoning test. Thus, the long-term stability and methanol tolerance are superior to that of commercial Pt/C catalysts. This study provides a new structural engineering strategy for the non-noble metal ORR electrocatalyst composite.

Abstract:Currently, Pt based materials are still the most efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts. However, their poor stability is obstructing the commercial viability of fuel cells. To lower reaction potential barrier and enhance the stability, we constructed alloy PtNi nanoparticles (NPs) with Pt-rich surface supported on nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) via a simple one-step solvothermal method using easily accessible reagents. The synthesized PtNi/NC exhibits enhanced mass activity (MA), specific activity (SA), and positive onset potential compared with commercial Pt/C catalyst. Meanwhile, the half-wave potential shifted negatively only 18 mV after 5000 cycles for PtNi/NC, indicating excellent stability. The enhanced ORR performance can be ascribed to the introduction of Ni into Pt optimizing the adsorption energy of Pt towards oxygen by adjusting d band center of Pt atom and stronger interaction between the metal NPs and support. Our work provides a potential synthesis strategy for developing Pt-based catalyst with low Pt loading and high ORR performance.

Abstract:Cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a highly important electrochemical reaction in renewable-energy technologies. In general, the surface area, exposed facets and electrical conductivity of catalysts all play important roles in determining their electrocatalytic activities, while their performance durability can be improved by integration with supporting materials. In this work, we have developed a method to synthesize hybrid structures between PtPd bimetallic nanocages and graphene by employing selective epitaxial growth of single-crystal Pt shells on Pd nanocubes supported on reduced graphene oxide (rGO), followed by Pd etching. The hollow nature, {100} surface facets and bimetallic composition of PtPd nanocages, together with the good conductivity and stability of graphene, enable high electrocatalytic performance in ORR. The obtained PtPd nanocage–rGO structures exhibit mass activity (0.534 A·mg Pt −1 ) and specific activity (0.482 mA·cm−2) which are 4.4 times and 3.9 times greater than the corresponding values for Pt/C.
Enhanced O2 Reduction on Atomically Thin Pt-based Nanoshells by Integrating Surface Facet, Interfacial Electronic, and Substrate Stabilization Effects

Abstract:To fully realize the commercial viability of Pt in fuel cells, the usage of scarce Pt must be reduced while the activity and durability in O-2 reduction reaction (ORR) must be enhanced. Here we report a metallic stack design achieving these goals for ORR, based on atomically precise materials synthesis. Au@Pd@Pt nanostructures with atomically thin Pt shells and high-index surfaces form an excellent platform for integrating the effects of electronic structures, surface facets, and substrate stabilization to boost ORR performance. Au@Pd@Pt trisoctahedrons (TOH) achieve mass activity 6.1 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C and dramatically enhanced durability beyond 1.0 V vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode in oxidation potential. Meanwhile, Pt comprises only 3.2% of the nanostructures. To further improve the ORR activity and demonstrate the versatility of our strategy, we implement the same design in PtNi alloy electrocatalysts. The Au@Pd@PtNi TOHs exhibit mass activity 14.3 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C as well as excellent durability. This work demonstrates an alternative strategy for fabricating high-performance and low-cost catalysts, and highlights the importance of simultaneous surface and interfacial engineering with atomic precision in designing catalysts.

Abstract:Development of cost-effective electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is key to enabling advanced electrochemical energy conversion technologies. Here, a novel nitrogen-doped metal-carbon hybrid (NiCo/CN) with a unique 3D hierarchical structure, consisting of uniformly distributed bimetallic nanoparticles encapsulated by partially graphitized N-doped carbon shells, is fabricated by a one-step pyrolysis of a nanoscale metal-organic framework as precursor, which exhibits excellent activity for both ORR and OER. The surface chemical changes on the carbon hybrid probed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveal the presence of favorable electronic interaction at the metal-nitrogen-carbon interface. Remarkably, the NiCo/CN catalyst prepared at high temperature (800°C) manifests a comparable performance to a commercial Pt/C catalyst for the ORR, but also superior stability, path selectivity and methanol tolerance. On the other hand, the Eonset (1.48 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode) and Ej=10mA/cm2 of NiCo/CN-800 for OER is very close to the state-of-the-art noble catalyst RuO2 (Eonset = 1.46 and Ej=10mA/cm2) along with superior stability over 20 h of operation. The excellent catalytic property is attributable to the unique nanostructure, high porosity and the constructive synergistic effects of the elements M, N, and C.
One-Step Synthesized Pt-on-NiCo Nanostructures for Oxygen Reduction with High Activity and Long-Term Stability

Abstract:A novel particle-on-alloy nanomaterial has been designed and successfully synthesized for oxygen reduction (ORR) with high activity and long-term stability, in which well-isolated Pt nanoparticles are supported by amorphous NiCo nanoalloys. The Pt-on-NiCo nanostructures are prepared through the artificial active collodion membrane by one-step method, and experimental data reveals that Pt is isolated and spreads onto the amorphous NiCo nanosupport, and not only Pt but also Ni and Co are metallic in the Pt-on-NiCo nanostructures. The optimized Pt53-on-NiCo nanostructures show higher activities in both the onset potential and kinetic current density toward the ORR relative to the commercial Pt reference catalysts because the Pt-on-NiCo catalyst could lower the OHad, which is considered to inhibit the ORR toward water. Meanwhile, Pt-on-NiCo nanostructures exhibit relatively long-term stability with only ~8% loss in electrochemical surface area (ECSA) for Pt.
Engineering multi-hollow PtCo nanoparticles for oxygen reduction reaction via a NaCl-sealed annealing strategy

Abstract:Hollow-structuring of Pt-based nanoparticles (NPs) is among the most effective strategies for reducing Pt utilization whilst maintaining good performance for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This work presents a NaCl-sealed annealing strategy to directly convert solid Pt NPs into multi-hollow PtCo alloys with a Pt-rich surface. By annealing a NaCl-sealed Pt/C@polydopamine-Co2+ system, the essential conditions for forming hollow Pt alloys can be easily equipped and a thermal activated nanoscale Kirkendall mitigation between Pt and Co atoms can consequently let inner solid Pt accomplish alloying and hollow-structuring. Serious sintering of NPs during thermal annealing can be efficiently avoided owing to the protection of outer rigid NaCl. The whole procedures is template-free and the final catalysts can be easily released from NaCl by just water washing, making the present synthesis a facile, green and versatile method. The final obtained multi-hollow PtCo NPs featured with a nitrogen-doped carbon coating afford much enhanced ORR activity and stability than benchmark commercial Pt/C.

Abstract:Shape-controlled Pt-based bimetallic nanocrystals with ultrathin Pt-rich surfaces are appealing electrocatalysts for some key electrochemical reactions such as the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) because of the synergistic tuning of topological atom configuration and strengthened electronic effects. However, it is rather challenging to fabricate such particular structures that can remain intact in harsh electrochemical environments, as such Pt-based nanocatalysts are unable to simultaneously achieve both unparalleled activity and robust stability. Here, a facile surface engineering strategy is proposed and employed to atomically tailor the near-surface structure of the Pt1.5Ni octahedra. The engineered Pt-Ni octahedra consist of an ultrathin Pt-rich shell (similar to two atomic layers) and Pt-rich bulk composition. The optimized octahedral catalyst exhibits superior specific and mass activity (7.7 mA/cm(2) Pt and 1.9 A/mg Pt at 0.9 V) for ORR, similar to 20 and similar to 10 times higher than commercial Pt/C, respectively. The ligand and strain effects arising from the near-surface engineering are unraveled to be responsible for the remarkable ORR activity. Moreover, it shows robust stability with just 9.2% decay in mass activity after accelerated degradation tests (ADTs), as its compositional nature prevents surface Pt atoms and interior Ni atoms from diffusion and dissolution, compared with a decrease of 33% for commercial Pt/C. Our atomical engineered surface strategy illustrates a facile and effective design for a class of Pt-based nanocatalysts with excellent activity and stability.
Interface modulation of twinned PtFe nanoplates branched 3D architecture for oxygen reduction catalysis

Abstract:Highly-branched dendritic Pt-based nanocrystals possess great potential in catalyzing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), but encounter performance ceiling due to their poor thermal and electrochemical stability. Here, we present a novel PtFe nanodendrites (NDs) branched with two-dimensional (2D) twinned nanoplates rather than conventional 1D nanowires, which breaks the ORR performance ceiling of dendritic catalysts by inducing the unique Pt-skin configuration via rationally thermal treatment. By further hybridizing the Pt-skin PtFe NDs/C with amino-functionalized ionic liquids (ILs), we achieve an unprecedented mass activity of 3.15 A/mg(Pt) at 0.9 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in the PtFe-based ORR electrocatalytic system. They also show excellent electrocatalytic durability for ORR with negligible activity decay and no apparent structural change after 20,000 cycles, in sharp contrast to the nanowires branched PtFe NDs counterpart. The remarkable catalytic performance is attributed to a combination of several structural features, including 2D morphology, twin boundary, partially ordered phase and strong coordination with amino group. This work highlights the significance of stabilizing electrocatalytic structures via morphology tuning, which thus enables further surface and interface modification for performance breakthrough in ORR electrocatalysis. Abstract:This paper introduces a new approach for catalyst design using the non-precious metal Cu as one of the catalytic active centers. This differs from previous studies that considered precious metals to be responsible for the catalytic reaction in precious alloys. Intermetallic AuCu3/C nanoparticles with a diameter of 3 nm were developed for the first time, with uniform dispersion and a narrow size distribution. The ca. 3 nm as-synthesised AuCu3/C showed superior catalytic performance for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) in alkaline solutions, with comparable half-wave potential and 1.5 times mass current density of commercial Pt/C at 0.80 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)). The advanced catalytic activities are mainly attributed to the synergetic effects of electro-active atomic Au and Cu on the particle surface, in which Cu helps to activate the O-2 molecule and Au benefits OH- desorption. The excellent durability and methanol tolerance exhibited in alkaline solutions provide another advantage for AuCu3/C to be considered as a potential alternative cathode catalyst in alkaline fuel cells.
