Abstract:Rates of chemical reaction and mass transfer were compared to determine the control step of p-xylene liquid phase oxidation process based on the kinetics previously obtained. It was shown that the p-xylene oxidation is controlled by chemical reaction under the industrial oxidation conditions. Therefore, the effect of mass transfer can be ignored and the CSTR model was used to simulate the reactor. The computation results showed that the yield of terephthalic acid increases and the concentration of 4-CBA decreases when the resident time, catalyst concentration, temperature, and/or the mol ratio of Br/Co increases, but the combustion rate of p-xylene and acetic acid increase simultaneously. It was also found that increasing the mol ratio of Co/Mn accelerates the side combustion reactions more remarkably than the main reactions.

Abstract:Evaluating the composition of organic reactants initially involved in thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR) reaction and better understanding the chemical and isotopic compositions of gases are helpful to minimize the risks involved in exploration of natural sour gas reservoirs. Variations in the chemical and carbon isotopic compositions of the gas produced during high pressure (50Mpa), isothermal (360 °C) hydro-pyrolysis experiments of the TSR reaction and thermal cracking involving n-pentane (n-C5) and condensate were investigated using a high-pressure gold tube system. The results show that the yields of CH4, CO2 and H2S increased with reaction time, and that the yields of C2–C4 firstly increased and then decreased. The δ13C value of alkane gases increased with reaction time. The δ13C value of CO2 produced from the TSR reaction involving n-C5 became less negative. The yields of alkane gas, CO2 and H2S from the TSR reaction of n-C5 were up to two times higher than that those from the TSR reaction of condensate. This indicates that lighter liquid hydrocarbons with higher hydrogen content produce more hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon gases. The relationship between the dryness, δ13C values of alkane gases and sourness could help to estimate whether the organic reactant was liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons. The value of ln(C2/C3) at the early stage of TSR reaction can be used to roughly estimate the composition of the liquid hydrocarbons involved in the TSR reaction. Our analysis also shows that the value of ln(C2/C3) firstly increased and then decreased with increasing gas dryness during the TSR reaction, which could be an effective index to assess the TSR reaction extent and provide new clues for identifying gas origin. The δ13C values of methane and ethane produced in the TSR reaction involving n-C5 reversed to δ13C1 > δ13C2 during the 48–60h period, which could be related to the oxidation of alkanes by HSO4−. This could help explain the δ13C1 > δ13C2 in TSR influenced gas reservoirs with low H2S content.

Abstract:Thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR) is an important redox reaction that markedly alters hydrocarbons in deep reservoirs. Although the major achievements that involve reaction mechanism, process, and geochemical characteristics were attained in the last 50 years, a quantitative TSR model that includes major products was not built, which restricts the understanding of the reaction mechanism and the generation process of hydrocarbons in TSR. In this study, two series of thermal simulation experiments of the TSR involving n -octadecane ( n -C18) and n -dodecylbenzene (C 12 B) with MgSO 4 and H 2 O in a confined gold-tube system were conducted, and all the major products in different phases, particularly oxygen-containing compounds, were quantitatively analyzed. The results indicated that the high-molecular-weight (HMW) oxygenated compounds in heavy products were predominated by ketones, followed by alcohol and acids, and the low-molecular-weight (LMW) organic acids in water mainly comprised acetic acids, followed by formic acid and propionic acid. Both oxygen-containing compounds prompted the TSR process but in different ways. The accumulation of HMW oxygenated compounds in the non-autocatalytic stages was essential for initiating the catalyzed reaction of TSR. In addition, the oxygenated compounds of hydrocarbons enhance polarity, making hydrocarbons easier to contact with HSO 4 − or [MgSO 4 ] CIP . The LMW organic acids possibly prompted the TSR process by acidifying the water and thus facilitating the formation of HSO 4 − and [MgSO 4 ] CIP . The oxidation reaction during TSR possibly converted HMW oxygenated compounds to LMW organic acids and CO 2 . The quantitative analysis of products in TSR revealed that TSR destroyed the hydrocarbons more rapidly but in a different way from thermal cracking and that the generation process of hydrocarbon types in TSR was in the following order: heavy hydrocarbon, gaseous hydrocarbon/light hydrocarbon/solid bitumen, and gaseous hydrocarbon/solid bitumen. Compared with oil cracking, the TSR promoted the oil reservoir to rapidly progress to more mature stages. The hydrocarbon precursor and reaction extent affected the generation process and the character of all products in the TSR. These results can provide an improved understanding of the TSR mechanism and process and be useful in the evaluation of petroleum potential for TSR-altered oils.

Abstract:Experimental studies of the effects of thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR) on light hydrocarbons were conducted in sealed gold tubes for 72 h at 400 degrees C and 50 MPa. A variety of pyrolysis experiments were carried out, including anhydrous, hydrous without MgSO4 (hydrous experiments) and hydrous with MgSO4 (TSR experiments). Common reservoir minerals including montmorillonite, illite, calcite and quartz were added to various experiments. Measurements of the quantities of n-C9+ normal alkanes (high molecular weight, HMW), n-C6-8 normal alkanes (low molecular weight, LMW), C7-8 isoalkanes, C6-7 cycloalkanes and C6-9 monoaromatics and compound specific carbon isotope analyses were made. The results indicate that TSR decreases hydrocarbon thermal stability significantly as indicated by chemically lower concentrations and isotopically heavier LMW saturated hydrocarbons in the TSR experiments compared to the hydrous and anhydrous experiments. In the LMW saturated hydrocarbon fraction, cycloalkanes tend to be more resistant to TSR than n-alkanes and isoalkanes. TSR promotes aromatization reactions and favors the generation of monoaromatics, resulting in higher chemical concentrations and isotopically equivalent compositions of monoaromatics in the anhydrous, hydrous and TSR experiments. This indicates that LMW monoaromatics are thermally stable during the pyrolysis experiments. Acid rather than basic catalyzed ionic reactions probably play a major role in TSR. This is suggested by the promotion effects of acid-clay minerals including illite and particularly montmorillonite. The basic mineral calcite retards the destruction of n-C9+ normal alkanes within the TSR experiments. Furthermore, clay minerals have a minor influence on the generation of LMW monoaromatics and play a negative role in regulating the concentrations of LMW saturated hydrocarbons; calcite does not favor the generation of LMW monoaromatics and plays a positive role in controlling the concentrations of LMW saturates relative to clay minerals. Quartz has a negligible role in the TSR experiments. Due to their differential responses to TSR, LMW hydrocarbon parameters, such as Schaefer [Schaefer, R.G., Littke, R., 1988. Maturity-related compositional changes in the low-molecular-weight hydrocarbon fraction of Toarcian Shale. Organic Geochemistry 13, 887-892], Thompson [Thompson, K.F.M., 1988. The light hydrocarbons in petroleum: a critical review. Organic Geochemistry 26, 417-440] parameters and stable carbon isotopic compositions of individual LMW saturated hydrocarbons in TSR affected oils should be used with caution. In addition, water promotes thermal cracking of n-C9+ normal alkanes and favors the generation of LMW cycloalkanes and monoaromatics. The result is lower concentrations of n-C9+ HMW normal alkanes and higher concentrations of LMW cycloalkanes and monoaromatics in hydrous experiments relative to anhydrous experiments with or without minerals. This investigation provides a better understanding of the effects of TSR on LMW hydrocarbons and the influence of reservoir minerals on TSR in natural systems. The paper shows how LMW hydrocarbon indicators in TSR altered oils improve understanding of the processes of hydrocarbon generation, migration and secondary alteration in subsurface petroleum reservoirs. Abstract:Thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR), a prominent organic-inorganic interaction between sulfate and hydrocarbons, refers to the reduction of sulfate to sulfide coupled with the oxidation of hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide in petroleum reservoirs within a sedimentary basin (Orr, 1974). Up to now, most TSR-associated hydrocarbon reservoirs have been discovered in carbonate rather than silicate reservoirs in nature. This is mainly supposed to be caused by the enrichment of substantial metal irons in silicate reservoirs, which can react immediately with hydrogen sulfide to form the metal solids and hence interrupt this reaction. In contrast, carbonate reservoirs are assumed to be more clean with containing less metal irons, hydrogen sulfide generated in TSR can be preserved and then act as a catalyst to make it happen continuously (Machel, 2001).

Abstract:The selectivity of a facile reductive and extractive desulfurization process was studied. In this desulfurization method, polyethylene glycol was used as the extractant, and sodium borohydride was used as the reductant. Several different simulated fuels were prepared by dissolving thiophenic sulfides, methylbenzene and hexylene in octane. The results showed that methylbenzene and olefins had different effects on different sulfur compounds during this desulfurization process. The extraction and reduction mechanisms were also explained. Four factors could affect the desulfurization performance: (1) intermolecular hydrogen bonding: (a) active O bonding with aromatic H or (b) S bonding with H atoms in hydroxide radicals, (2) “like-dissolves-like” interactions between polyethylene glycol and thiophenic sulfides, (3) the methyl steric hindrance effect and the electron density of sulfur atoms, and (4) the combination of S atoms with produced nickel boride to form active desulfurization centres. The desulfurization reaction path was also deduced according to the GC/MS results.

Abstract:Thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR) is conventionally defined as an organic – inorganic interaction between sulfates and hydrocarbons occurring at ≥100 °C in deep buried geologic settings. In this paper, reactivity of various hydrocarbons, sulfate contact ion-pairs (CIP) and inorganic matters, as well as possible formation mechanisms of TSR-derived organic sulfur compounds (OSCs) were evaluated respectively from chemical thermodynamic perspectives. At the same burial temperature, the oxidizability order of the seven sulfate contact ion-pairs for CH4 is thermodynamically determined as [Al2(SO4)3]CIP ≫ [MgSO4]CIP > [FeSO4] CIP > [CaSO4]CIP > [SrSO4]CIP > [BaSO4]CIP > [Na2SO4]CIP. NH4 +, hydrogen gas and pyrobitumen derived from thermal cracking were also most likely involved in TSR as well as hydrocarbons. Thereinto, TSR by NH4 + might provide an alternative origin of N2 in sedimentary environments in addition to conventional origins of N2. Although it is thermodynamically feasible for thiols or thiophenes generation from three possible pathways, i.e., H2S–alkanes, H2S–olefins and S0–alkanes, most of OSCs in TSR zones are more likely derived from H2S–alkanes interactions in view of low abundance of elemental sulfur and/or olefins relative to that of H2S and alkanes in TSR-altered oil and gas reservoirs. The likelihood of formation of OSCs involving methane cannot be entirely excluded.

Abstract:Improved understanding of the reservoir mineral effects on the occurrence of thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR) and possible mechanisms is critical for petroleum exploration and production. A series of hydrous pyrolysis experiments were conducted with and without the presence of montmorillonite, illite and quartz (silicates), calcite and dolomite (carbonates) at 360 degrees C and 50 MPa for 12 h, 48 h and 312 h. Gaseous compounds, C7-8 light hydrocarbons, n-C-9+ and organic sulfur compounds as well as compound-specific delta S-34 analysis were conducted subsequently. The results show that with the heating time increasing or TSR advancing, n-C-9+ decrease gradually accompanied by the increases of TSR products, H2S, alkylbenzenes, benzothiophenes (BTs) and dibenzothiophenes (DBTs). The delta S-34 values of BTs and DBTs progressively approached that of MgSO4 and the difference in their average delta S-34 values (Delta S-34(BT-DBT)) decreased. Compared to experiments with the absence of minerals, the experiments with silicates, in particular montmorillonite, are depleted in n-C-9+ and enriched in H2S, light monoaromatics and organosulfur compounds and smaller Delta S-34(BT-DBT). Experiments with carbonates demonstrated the opposite trend. This indicates that silicates, in particular montmorillonite, accelerated TSR rates while carbonates reduced them. Under the experimental conditions, the exchange cations within montmorillonite and on the surface of clays and talc precipitation can increase the concentrations of H+ and hence HSO4 and then catalyze the generation of isoalkanes, which are prone to be oxidized in TSR. This can reduce the activation energy required for the occurrence of TSR. It might therefore be possible for TSR to occur at relatively low temperatures in silicate reservoirs and source rocks in natural environments. Carbonate dissolution can reduce the concentrations of H+ and HSO4, and hence reduce the TSR rates. This study demonstrates the importance of minerals in regulating the TSR occurrence and suggests that TSR can occur in siliciclasitic as well as carbonate formations in nature. Therefore, the significance of minerals should be considered in the evaluation of TSR and sour gas risk in TSR-altered hydrocarbon accumulations in different geological contexts. Thermal Stability of 2-Thiadiamondoids Determined by Pyrolysis Experiments in a Closed System and Its Geochemical Implications

Abstract:The abundance of 2-thiadiamondoids is currently utilized to assess the extent of thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR). However, these compounds are ultimately degraded to small molecules with increasing temperature in deep hot reservoirs, resulting in uncertainty in their use as a proxy to evaluate the extent of TSR. In this study, the thermal stability of 2-thiadiamondoids was determined from variations in their abundance upon pyrolysis at different temperatures using an oil enriched in thiadiamondoids. The results demonstrated that these compounds were generally stable at Easy%Ro <= 1.0, followed by partial destruction at Easy%Ro >= 1.3-2.0 and intensive decomposition at Easy%Ro >= 2.0-2.3, suggesting the potential underestimation of the TSR extent at the highly mature to over mature stages. The thermal stability of 2-thiadiamondoids and diamondoids strongly depended on their cage numbers, which presented an increasing trend with higher cage numbers. However, diamondoids were far more stable than 2-thiadiamondoids and were still thermally stable even up to Easy%Ro = 1.8-2.3. The thermal stability of dibenzothiophenes (DBTs) showed a decreasing trend with increases in alkyl substituted carbon numbers. They were thermally stable at EasyRo% <= 1.0-1.8 and can be seriously cracked at Easy% >= 1.8-3.0. The C-0-DBT and C-1 -DBTs were more stable than thiadiamondoids, but C-3-DBTs showed the opposite trend. The thermal stability of gasoline range hydrocarbons showed a trend of CH4 >C2H6>C3H8>C4-5. CH4 and C2H6 were much more stable than diamondoids, while C3-5 hydrocarbons were only thermally stable at Easy%Ro <= 1.8-2.3 and severely degraded at Easy%Ro >= 2.6-3.0. The C3H8 and 2-cage diamantanes, C(4-5 )compounds and 1-cage adamantanes had a similar thermal stability. Therefore, to accurately assess the TSR extent should be made using thiadiamondoids, diamondoids and C0-1 -DBTs, even gasoline range hydrocarbons, rather than thiadiamondoids alone, if gases are well preserved within petroleum reservoirs in the subsurface. Fractionation of Carbon and Hydrogen Isotopes of TSR-altered Gas Products under Closed System Pyrolysis

Abstract:Thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR) is common in marine carbonate gas reservoirs, leading to complicated isotope characteristics of TSR-altered gas. This study aims to better understand how TSR affects the geochemical and isotopic compositions of alkanes in pyrolysis products. Pyrolysis of TSR were conducted with crude oil, nonane (C9) and methylnaphthalene (MN) in the presence of MgSO4 solution at temperatures of 350 °C, 360 °C, and 370 °C for different durations of 4–219 h in a closed system. Results show that carbon and hydrogen isotope compositions of alkane gas resulting from TSR (pyrolysis with crude oil and MgSO4) became heavier with increasing carbon number, i.e., δ13C1 < δ13C2 < δ13C3 and δ2H–C1 < δ2H–C2 < δ2H–C3. Compared with the δ13C1, δ13C2 and δ13C3 increased in a much wider range as heating continued. Carbon and hydrogen isotopes of alkane gas produced by TSR became heavier with increasing gas souring index. Values for δ13C1–δ13C2 and δ2H–C1– δ2H–C2 typically decreased as oil and C9 underwent thermal cracking. Comparative experiments using C9 in the presence of MgSO4 produced partially reversed carbon isotope series (δ13C1 > δ13C2), which, for the first time, confirmed the ability of TSR to cause isotopic reversal from pyrolysis. The residual heavy alkanes gradually became 13C-enriched during TSR, which increased δ13C2 values and changed the partially reversed isotope sequence to a positive sequence (δ13C1 < δ13C2). The discovery of a partial reversal of the carbon isotope series of alkane gases through pyrolysis will further deepen the understanding of TSR-altered natural gas.

Abstract:For identifying the occurrence and extent of thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR) reaction of natural gas and better understanding the chemical and carbon isotopic variations in natural gas reservoirs, high-pressure hydro-pyrolysis with a special designed apparatus was performed using natural gas and various amounts of MgSO 4 ·7H 2 O at up to 360 °C. The yields, chemical and isotopic compositions of the gases produced during TSR and thermal cracking were measured. As the extent of TSR reaction increased, the concentrations of CH 4 , CO 2 and H 2 S increased in a nonlinear way, while those of C 2 H 6 and C 3 H 8 decreased. According to the variation of gas content, the TSR reaction of alkane gases can be divided into an uncatalyzed and a catalyzed stage, which is different from previous studies that treated the TSR reaction of alkane gases as a non-autocatalytic reduction process. As the concentration of MgSO 4 ·7H 2 O increased, the rate of TSR reaction with hydrocarbon gases increased. The concentrations of HSO 4 − and volume of aqueous phase could be responsible for the different TSR reaction rates in the catalyzed stage. The co-variation of ln(C 1 /C 2 ) and ln(C 2 /C 3 ) could be related to the TSR reaction of alkane gases. Our study provides clues for understanding the compositional variations in natural conditions.

Abstract:Elemental sulfur, as a transient intermediate compound, by-product, or catalyst, plays significant roles in thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR) reactions. However, the mechanisms of the reactions in S–H2O–hydrocarbons systems are not clear. To improve our understanding of reaction mechanisms, we conducted a series of experiments between 200 and 340°C for S–H2O–CH4, S–D2O–CH4, and S–CH4–1m ZnBr2 systems in fused silica capillary capsules (FSCCs). After a heating period ranging from 24 to 2160h (hrs), the quenched samples were analyzed by Raman spectroscopy. Combined with the in situ Raman spectra collected at high temperatures and pressures in the S–H2O and S–H2O–CH4 systems, our results showed that (1) the disproportionation of sulfur in the S–H2O–CH4 system occurred at temperatures above 200°C and produced H2S, SO42−, and possibly trace amount of HSO4−; (2) sulfate (and bisulfate), in the presence of sulfur, can be reduced by methane between 250 and 340°C to produce CO2 and H2S, and these TSR temperatures are much closer to those of the natural system (<200°C) than those of any previous experiments; (3) the disproportionation and TSR reactions in the S–H2O–CH4 system may take place simultaneously, with TSR being favored at higher temperatures; and (4) in the system S–D2O–CH4, both TSR and the competitive disproportionation reactions occurred simultaneously at temperatures above 300°C, but these reactions were very slow at lower temperatures. Our observation of methane reaction at 250°C in a laboratory time scale suggests that, in a geologic time scale, methane may be destroyed by TSR reactions at temperatures >200°C that can be reached by deep drilling for hydrocarbon resources.
Thermochemical Sulphate Reduction (TSR) Versus Maturation and Their Effects on Hydrogen Stable Isotopes of Very Dry Alkane Gases

Abstract:Here we report the first study of the effect of thermochemical sulphate reduction (TSR) on the hydrogen isotopes of natural gas. Variably sour (H2S-bearing) and very dry (>97% methane) gas samples from Lower Triassic, Permian and Carboniferous marine carbonate reservoirs in the Sichuan Basin, China, have been analysed. All gases seem to have been sourced from mature marine kerogen and contain H2S that resulted from TSR. The Carboniferous samples are largely unaffected by TSR and were used to assess the effects of normal thermal maturation processes on the carbon and hydrogen isotopes of methane and ethane as a function of gas dryness (a proxy for thermal maturity). Maturation led to heavier carbon isotopes of methane and ethane and hydrogen isotopes of ethane; in contrast methane hydrogen isotopes seem to have little systematic variation with increasing maturity. TSR did not have a systematic effect on the hydrogen isotopes of methane, although the spread of values diminished (ending up at a constant −120‰) as TSR proceeded. This was possibly due to the partial thermochemical sulphate reduction of ethane adding isotopically light methane and thus offsetting the Rayleigh fractionation effects of TSR of methane. In contrast, hydrogen isotopes of ethane became much heavier as TSR proceeded, to values greater than those for samples only influenced by maturation. Under some circumstances, the effects of TSR can be identified and discerned from the effects of normal thermal maturation by plotting the difference between the carbon isotope compositions of methane and ethane and the difference between the hydrogen isotope compositions of methane and ethane.
Effect of thermochemical sulfate reduction upon carbonate gas reservoir: An example from the northeast Sichuan Basin

Abstract:Gas geochemistry, fluid inclusion salinity, core observation and thin section analysis indicate that the Permian-Triassic Changxing-Feixianguan gas reservoir experienced chemical alteration of thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR) since the middle Yanshanian period. The TSR alteration is mainly shown in three aspects: (1) The C_ 2+ and 12C relationships to CH_4 and 13C are preferentially consumed, resulting in the gas dryness coefficient to be larger and carbon isotope heavier; (2) A great deal of water produced by TSR makes the original formation water in the gas reservoir diluted, so that the salinity of formation water is reduced correspondingly; (3) TSR and its products, CO_2 and H_2S, make the dolomite and anhydrite dissolved, which increases the porosity and then improve the physical property of reservoir.

Abstract:Solid bitumen, H2S, pyrite and anhydrite samples from the Lower Triassic Feixianguan Formation and Upper Permian Changxing Formation, and source rock kerogen samples from the Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian and Permian in the East Sichuan Basin were analyzed for their sulfur content and δ34S values, to determine if the measurements were consistent with a thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR) origin of the produced H2S and solid bitumen. The results show that the solid bitumen samples have sulfur contents from 2.6 to 12.5wt.% and δ34S values from+13.4‰ to+22.1‰. The δ34S values are significantly heavier than those of potential Upper Permian source rock kerogens that average+1.3‰ (n=3), suggesting that most of the sulfur in the solid bitumen is derived from isotopically heavy H2S of TSR origin (from+12.0‰ to+13.7‰). Interestingly, two gases produced from gas to water transition zones during drill stem testing (DST) show significantly lighter δ34S values (+3.3‰ and+4.1‰) than the H2S from gas-producing intervals. The isotopically light H2S may be genetically linked to fracture-filling isotopically heavy anhydrite with δ34S values from+38.5‰ to+39.6‰, which are significantly heavier than those of coeval seawater sulfate (+11.8‰ to+21.7‰) as measured for bedded anhydrite. The link may have resulted from reduction of part of the dissolved sulfate by hydrocarbons under sulfate-limited conditions. Source rock kerogens show a secular change in δ34S values relative to source rock age. A dramatic decrease and then increase in δ34Skerogen was found toward the Permian/Triassic boundary for the first time in the East Sichuan Basin.

Abstract:The molecular structure of sulfur compounds in residual oils and their desulfurization reactivity during residue hydmprocessing (RHT) process were investigated by virtue of the self-established semiquantitative APPI FT-ICT MS combined with the kinetic analysis of the hydrodesulfurization of individual sulfur compounds. In order to increase the characterization accuracy and gain more structure details on the sulfur compounds, a prior SARA separation scheme of residual oils into clearly-defined fractions was performed. Results show that S1, 52, 53, and N1S1 class were the dominated species in the residual oil feedstock. During RHT process, the S1 class species were identified as the key refractory sulfur compounds, while 52 and 53 class species were identified as the easily-removed sulfur compounds. The molecular structure change of S1 class species during RHT process was marked by a drastic increase in the aromaticity and polycondensation, indicating that S1 class species with less-aromatic cores exhibited higher reactivity. Moreover, a novel DBE-based lumping kinetics approach containing 6 sulfur groups of S1 class compounds was developed to investigate the desulfurization reactivity of individual sulfur compounds. The results revealed that the reactivity of sulfur compounds depends on their structure, and different molecular structure brings distinctly different reactivity. The reactivity difference between the individual sulfur compounds in residual oils is considerably smaller than that in other petroleum fractions with lower boiling points, such as VGO, diesel. This research provides a deep insight into complex desulfurization chemistry during RHT process.

Abstract:This article discusses the role of methane in thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR), the fate of TSR-derived CO2 and the effect of TSR on reservoir porosity and permeability, and the causes of the anomalously high porosity and permeability in the Lower Triassic soured carbonate gas reservoirs in the northeast Sichuan Basin, southwest China. The Lower Triassic carbonate reservoirs were buried to a depth of about 7000m and experienced maximum temperatures up to 220°C before having been uplifted to the present-day depths of 4800 to 5500m, but they still possess porosities up to 28.9% and permeabilities up to 3360md. The present-day dry gas reservoirs evolved from a paleo-oil accumulation and experienced varying degrees of TSR alteration as evidenced from the abundant sulfur-rich solid bitumens and varying H2S and CO2 concentrations. TSR occurred mainly within the oil and condensate/wet gas windows, with liquid hydrocarbons and wet hydrocarbon gases acting as the dominant reducing agents responsible for sulfate reduction, sulfur-rich solid bitumen and H2S generation, and calcite precipitation. Methane-dominated TSR was a rather late event and had played a less significant role in altering the reservoirs. Intensive H2S and CO2 generation during TSR resulted in calcite cementation rather than carbonate dissolution, which implies that the amount of water generated during TSR was volumetrically insignificant. 13C-depleted CO2 derived from hydrocarbon oxidation preferentially reacted with Ca2+ to form isotopically light calcite cements, and the remaining CO2 re-equilibrated with the 13C-enriched water–rock systems with its δ13C rapidly approaching the values for the host rocks, which accounted for the observed heavy and relatively constant CO2 δ13C values. The carbonate reservoirs suffered from differential porosity loss by TSR-involved solid bitumen generation and TSR-induced calcite and pyrite precipitation. Intensive TSR significantly reduced the porosity and permeability of the intervals expected to have relatively high sulfate contents (the evaporative-platform dolostones and the platform-margin shoal dolostones immediately underlying the evaporative facies). Early oil charge and limited intensity of TSR alteration, together with very low phyllosilicate content and early dolomitization, accounted for the preservation of anomalously high porosities in the reservoirs above the paleo-oil/water contact. A closed system seems to have played a special role in preserving the high porosity in the gas zone reservoirs below the paleo-oil/water contact. The closed system, which is unfavorable for deep burial carbonate dissolution and secondary porosity generation, was favorable for the preservation of early-formed porosity in deeply buried carbonates. Especially sucrosic and vuggy dolostones have a high potential to preserve such porosity.

Abstract:Supercritical water gasification (SCWG) is famous for converting and utilizing sulfur-containing fuels without SOx emission. Under the hydrogen-rich reductive condition, sulfide is the prevalent inorganic existence form of sulfur with the presence of oxidative sulfurous compounds which is represented by sulfate. The transformation between sulfate and sulfide is of interest to realize regulating the final products. Thus, experimental and theoretical studies were applied in the presentwork to explore the unknownmechanism of thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR) by H-2. The degree of sulfate reduction by hydrogen decreases from 63 +/- 5% of NaHSO4 to 24 +/- 3% of Na2SO4, and 18 +/- 1% of Na2SO4_K2SO4_NaOH mixture at the same reaction condition (600 degrees C, 25MPa, 20min). Sulfide, which presents in both liquid and gas phase, is the only reduction product, without any apparition of thiosulfate or SOx. Using SMD implicit continuum solvation model, the effect of supercritical water (SCW) on the reaction paths was detailed discussed in the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The absence of SO2 in SCWG is a result of the solvation effect which guarantees the spontaneity of the consumption reaction of SO2. By comparing Gibbs free energy change and energy barrier of each reaction, the experimental results that higher sulfate reduction extentwas reached under acidic conditionwas justified.
