Abstract:The process of p-xylene liquid phase oxidation to produce purified terephthalic acid (PTA) involves a series of liquid phase radical reactions, chemical absorption, reactive crystallization, and evaporation. A commercial PTA production flow sheet includes a number of unit operations, which construct a complex process system. In this paper, a review of research and development (R&D) works on PTA process carried out in Zhejiang University during recent years is introduced. The works cover the oxidation and crystallization kinetics, gas-liquid mass transfer and evaporation, reactor modeling, database development, novel reactor design, process modeling, simulation, and optimization. The author emphasizes the viewpoint through this case study that chemical reaction engineering should be developed to process system engineering to extend its scope, and particular attention should be paid on reactor and process modeling.

Abstract:Adductive crystallization is a special separation method.Terephthalic acid(TA)could be dissolved and re-crystallized in certain acylamide solvents such as N,N-dimethylacetamide(DMAC) spontaneously even at constant temperature,solvent adduct crystals could be formed with 1:2 molar ratio of TA and DMAC through hydrogen bonding.This adductive crystallization method showed a high selectivity in TA recovery from the TA residue of the single-step crystallization,through which the 90%—95% colored impurities initially contained in the residue could be removed.
Aging of Crude Terephthalic Acid Crystals at High Temperatures

Abstract:By using a specially contrived experimental technique, crude terephthalic acid (TPA) crystals have been aged in their own saturated 90 mass % acetic acid + 10 mass % solution at 467, 477, 487, 497, and 507 K. The time evolution of crystal size distribution, as well as contents of the contaminant 4-carboxybenzaldehyde (4-CBA) in both solid and liquid phases, has been experimentally measured. Experimental results reveal the following: (1) The effect of stirring rate on the aging of crude TPA crystals is negligible under the conditions of this study. (2) The crystal size distribution is observed to broaden with time, accompanied by a decrease in number and an increase in averaged crystal size during aging. The aging rate increases with the increasing of temperature. (3) Under the conditions of this study, substantial purification occurs during aging. The rate of purification increases as the temperature increases. The Ostwald ripening mechanism is proposed to model the effect of aging on crystal size distribution. A purification model based on Ostwald ripening and molecular diffusion of 4-CBA in TPA crystal is proposed to simulate the effect of aging on the purification of crude TPA by crystal aging. The model parameters have been determined in a nonlinear optimization. The fit of the simulated results is fairly good.

Abstract:The adductive crystallization is an effective method of purifying aromatic dicarboxylic acids.In this paper crystallizations of three phthalic acids(tere-,ortho-,iso-) in six organic solvents were investigated by spectrophotometries,TGA and XRD,respectively.The results show that,for terephthalic acid(TA),three of its crystallization products in six solvents are normal TA crystals,while the other three are the adducts that containing both TA and solvent in crystals,and among them only TA-dimethyl acetylamide(DMAC) and TA-N-methyl pyrrolidone(NMP) adducts exhibit a high selectivity to TA.XRD shows that,in the adduct crystals,each TA molecule connects two solvent molecules tied by O-H...O hydrogen-bonding.Crystallizations of tere-,ortho-,iso-phthalic acids in DMAC demonstrate different behaviors,that both TA and IPA can form adducts with DMAC,while OPA could not.The reason can be explained by the different roles of hydrogen-bonds,that the joint force between TA/IPA and solvents is the inter-molecule hydrogen-bonding which is stronger than the joint force between OPA and DMAC because OPA has an intra-molecule hydrogen-bond which results in weakening the joint force with solvents and therefore could not form a steady adduct with solvents.

Abstract:The thermodynamics of adduct crystallization of terephthalic acid (TA) in amide solvents, such as N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAC) and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), was studied in this paper. The results showed that the molecule ratio of TA and solvent in the TA-DMAC and TA-NMP adduct crystals is about 1:2. With poor thermal stability, the dissociation temperatures of the TA-DMAC and TA-NMP adduct crystals are about (341 and 313) K, respectively. The adduct crystallization is an exothermic process; the crystallization enthalpy of the [TA·2DMAC] adduct is about −34.00 kJ·mol−1, and that of the [TA·2NMP] adduct is about −31.12 kJ·mol−1. Finally, analysis of the liquid−solid equilibrium indicated that the concentration difference between the solubility of adduct crystals and the notional TA solid may result in the automatic adduct crystallization process.

Abstract:Non-dispersive solvent extraction (NDSE) with p -xylene as extractant was employed as a novel separation method to recover both p -toluic (PT) acid and water from purified terephthalic acid (PTA) wastewater. The mass transport behavior of PT acid from aqueous solution to p-xylene was investigated by experiments and numerical simulation. Experiments showed that NDSE is feasible and effective. Residual PT acid in the raffinate can be reduced to lower than the permitted limit of wastewater re-use (100 g/m 3 ) with extraction time longer than 60 s in industrial conditions. A mathematical model of PT acid mass transport was developed to optimize the membrane module performance. The model was validated with the experimental results with relative errors of less than 6%. Numerical analysis for mass transfer through the lumen side, the porous membrane layer, and the shell side showed that PT acid transport in the aqueous solution is the rate determining step. The effects of the membrane and operating parameters on membrane module performance were investigated by means of computational simulations. The key parameters suggested for industrial NDSE design are: fiber inner radius r 1 =200–250 µm, extraction time t e =50–60 s, aqueous/organic volumetric ratio a/o =9.0, and temperature T =318 K.

Abstract:A novel experimental technique was developed to study the aging mechanism and kinetics of crude terephthalic acid (CTA) particles in acetic acid. Aging experiments were carried out by using the developed experimental technique in the temperature range from 160°C to 220°C. Based on the experimental results the mechanism of Ostwald ripening was brought forward, and a kinetic model describing the time evolution of particle size distribution was developed based on the Ostwald type ripening. The model parameters were determined by data fitting, and the simulated results agreed well with the experiment results.

Abstract:A fractional kinetic model for the liquid-phase oxidation of p-xylene to terephthalic acid catalyzed by cobalt acetate and manganese acetate and promoted by hydrogen bromide was proposed. The developed model parameters were determined in a nonlinear optimization, minimizing the difference between the simulated and experimental time evolution of the product composition obtained in a semibatch oxidation reactor where the gas and liquid phases were well mixed. The experiments included four values of the initial concentration of p-xylene. Further, the effects of the oxygen partial pressure, reaction temperature, catalyst concentration, and promoter concentration on the time evolution of the experimental product distribution and kinetic constants of the developed model were investigated.

Abstract:Aging of crude terephthalic acid (CTA) particles at elevated temperatures is a complicated process. The experimental difficulties for the kinetic studies lie in three aspects, i. e. the control of the aging condition, the transient liquid- solid separation of aging slurries, and the analysis of the particle size distribution of CTA and the micro concentration determination of the impurity 4- CBA. In this paper, a novel experimental technique on the gas- liquid solid aging was developed to study the aging kinetics of CTA particles. This technique provides an effective and reliable experimental means of the studying aging kinetics of CTA particles.

Abstract:Rates of chemical reaction and mass transfer were compared to determine the control step of p-xylene liquid phase oxidation process based on the kinetics previously obtained. It was shown that the p-xylene oxidation is controlled by chemical reaction under the industrial oxidation conditions. Therefore, the effect of mass transfer can be ignored and the CSTR model was used to simulate the reactor. The computation results showed that the yield of terephthalic acid increases and the concentration of 4-CBA decreases when the resident time, catalyst concentration, temperature, and/or the mol ratio of Br/Co increases, but the combustion rate of p-xylene and acetic acid increase simultaneously. It was also found that increasing the mol ratio of Co/Mn accelerates the side combustion reactions more remarkably than the main reactions.

Abstract:A biodegradable crystalline aliphatic polyester, poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), and an amorphous semiaromatic nylon, poly(hexamethylene isophthalamide-co-terephthalamide) (PA6IcoT), were melted and reactively blended with p-toluene sulfonic acid as the catalyst. The isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization processes of PBS and its blends with PA6IcoT were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Three different models (Jeziorny’s, Ozawa’s, and Mo et al.’s methods) were used to simulate the isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization kinetics. Moreover, the crystalline morphologies were observed by polarized optical microscopy. The effects of PA6IcoT and the ester–amide exchange reaction between polyester and polyamide on the crystallization processes and crystalline morphology are described in detail.

Abstract:TiO2/SiO2 was prepared by adsorption phase synthesis, and its photocatalysis on degradation of gaseous toluene was studied. The concentration of water added in preparation and temperature in calcination were changed to regulate formation of anatase TiO2. Ti contents in samples and grain size of anantase TiO2 were measured, and the catalytic activity in photodegrading gaseous toluene was characterized. The photocatalytic activity increased sharply when the calcination temperature increased to 500 degrees C or the volume of water added in preparation reached 1.5 mL. XRD analysis indicated that the crystal phase trails formation of TiO2 from anatase to rutile was restrained and TiO2 remained in the form of anatase even after being suffered at 900 degrees C. The high constant photocatalytic activity front 500 to 900 degrees C was attributed to the stability of anatase TiO2 in crystal size and phase transformation.
Recovery of Terephthalic Acid from Alkali Reduction Wastewater by Cooling Crystallization

Abstract:A process for the recovery and purification of terephthalic acid (TA) from alkali reduction wastewater is reported. TA was first precipitated from alkali reduction wastewater by acidification with sulfuric acid, and then the produced crude TA was dissolved in dimethylacetamide (DMA) so that crude TA could be purified from the solution by cooling crystallization. The results indicated that acidification could reduce the chemical oxygen demand of the wastewater by 83 %, and the purity of TA by crystallization could reach 99.91 %. A correlation was proposed in describing the solubility of crude TA in DMA from 303.4 to 358.65 K, which gives a mean relative discrepancy of less than 1.14 %. The cooling rate of the mother liquor had a large influence on the crystal size distribution. At an average cooling rate of 1.18 K min–1, the particle size distribution of TA was narrow and the average size was about 100 μm. In a bench‐scale study, it was demonstrated that the crystallized product can be recycled as the raw material for polyethylene terephthalate production. Terephthalic acid (TA) was successfully recovered and purified from alkali reduction wastewater by acidification with sulfuric acid and by cooling crystallization with dimethylacetamide. The chemical oxygen demand of the wastewater was effectively reduced, and TA with a purity of 99.91 % was obtained.

Simulation of Purification of Crude Terephthalic Acid by Secondary Oxidation

Abstract:Purification of crude terephthalic acid (CTA) by secondary oxidation under batch conditions was studied and mathematical model for CTA purification with dissolution-crystallization control was established. The model parameters were estimated from experimental data and crystal growth rate was calculated by measuring particle size distribution of CTA. Model calculation results showed that CTA purification rate model fits the experiments well. The apparent activation energy is 33.1 kJ/mol and it was obtained by correlating model parameters with temperature. Purification of CTA with solid holdups of 20% and 30% are predicted satisfactorily by the parameters from that with 15% solid holdup, and average relative deviation of the prediction with experimental data are 7.2% and 5.9% respectively. Besides, CTA crystal growth rate calculated are in the range of 0.0121-0.1162 nm/s, which is slower than that of cooling and evaporative crystallization process.

Abstract:Purification of crude terephthalic acid (CTA) by secondary oxidation was studied. Influences of catalyst dosage, particle size of CTA, reaction temperature and solid holdup on purification of CTA were investigated in a semi-continuous experimental setup. Catalyst dosage affects the purification process by changing the liquid-phase oxidation rate. Under a set of specific reaction conditions, the addition of least catalyst dosage must be adjusted so that the oxidation rate of objects to be oxidized are at least faster than dissolving rate of CTA. Therefore further increasing of catalyst dosage cannot further accelerate the purification rate. The smaller particle size of CTA is advantageous to purification rate. The rising of reaction temperature obviously boost the rate and extent of purification. The mass of p-toluic acid and 4-carboxybenzaldehyde in CTA decrease by 70% - 90% and 70%-80% respectively within 60 min at 208°C when catalyst mass fraction is 3.5 × 10 -4 and particle size of CTA is 89.9 μm.

Abstract:A spray reactor in which the liquid phase containing dissolved p-xylene (pX) and the catalyst is dispersed as fine droplets by a nozzle into a continuous vapor phase containing the oxidant (O2) is shown to produce high-purity terephthalic acid (TPA) with less than 25ppm 4-carboxybenzaldehyde (4-CBA) in the solid TPA product. In sharp contrast, the solid TPA product obtained from a conventional stirred reactor similar to the configuration used in the conventional Mid-Century (MC) process contains nearly 1000ppm 4-CBA even though the reactor is operated at similar pressure and temperature (15bar and 200°C) but with the gas phase dispersed into the liquid phase. The dramatic improvement in TPA product quality during spray reactor operation is attributed to two main factors: the alleviation of interphase gas–liquid mass transfer limitations that facilitates more complete oxidation of the pX and the intermediate oxidation products to TPA, and reduced backmixing that enhances the oxidation rates. Theoretical calculations show that the time constants for O2 diffusion in typical spray droplets (50μm diameter) is 1–2 orders of magnitude lower than the kinetic rate constant confirming complete O2 penetration and saturation of the droplets. Further, the usage of CO2 as an inert gas and the dominance of acetic acid (>50mol.%) in the vapor phase under reaction conditions create an environment that falls outside of the flammability envelope. Mathematical modeling of the stirred reactor using MC process conditions accurately predicts the steady state temperatures observed in industrial reactors. The model also clearly divulges that the cooling provided by partial evaporation of the acetic acid solvent is vital to maintain stable steady state operation. By eliminating the need for a hydrogenation step, the spray reactor has the potential to not only reduce capital and operating costs but also provide environmental benefits.

Abstract:Removal of acetic acid from crude terephthalic acid (CTA) by centrifugal washing, replacement washing and beating vacuum filtration with p-xylene or water as solvents was investigated. Effect of centrifugal washing with p-xylene as solvent is the best among the above washing processes. Effects of centrifuging time, solvent amount, rotating speed and thickness of CTA cake on removal of acetic acid were studied. Under conditions of rotating-speed 2000 r/min, mass ratio of p-xylene to CTA 1.2, centrifuging time 7 min, thickness of CTA cake 19.5 mm mass fraction of acetic acid in CTA cake can be reduce from 10.00%-15.00% to 0.06%. Furthermore, combination of centrifugal washing with p-xylene and then beating with water can lower the mass fractions of p-xylene and acetic acid in CTA cake to 1.73% and 0.07%, respectively.
