Abstract:Flat-top-soliton (or platicon) dynamics in coherently pumped normal dispersion microresonators is important for both fundamental nonlinear physics and microcomb generation in the visible band. Here we numerically investigate the platicon generation that is initiated via Raman assisted four wave mixing instead of mode interaction. To show the possibility of generating coherent combs in the visible band, we design an aluminum nitride (AlN) microresonator with normal dispersion and investigate the comb generation dynamics in simulations. Stable platicon Kerr combs can be generated in this AlN microresonator using a 780-nm pump. Moreover, we also observe a breather platicon dynamics induced by the narrow Raman gain spectrum of crystalline AlN, which shows distinct dynamics from the dark soliton breathers reported in previous work that are dominated by Kerr effect. A phase diagram bearing the influence of the pump detuning and pump power on the breathing dynamics of the breather platicon is also computed. Furthermore, a transition to chaotic breathing is numerically observed.

Abstract:High quality lithium niobate thin film microresonators provide an ideal platform for on-chip nonlinear optics applications. However, the phase matching condition for efficient parametric process sets a high requirement for fabrication control. Here we demonstrate a photonic molecular structure composed of two strongly coupled lithium niobate microdisks of different diameters fabricated using femtosecond laser micromachining and focused ion beam milling. With a continuous wave excitation, rich nonlinear optical processes including cascaded four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman scattering were observed around the second harmonic wavelength. Our results indicate that the coupled microdisks form a superior system for nonlinear optical process.
Integrated High-Q Crystalline AlN Microresonators for Broadband Kerr and Raman Frequency Combs

Abstract:Development of planar-integrated microresonators with high quality factors (Q's) is crucial for nonlinear photonics in a robust chip. Compared with silicon and silicon nitride, aluminum nitride (AlN) features intrinsic quadratic and cubic susceptibilities as well as an enormous band gap (similar to 6.2 eV), making it ideal for nonlinear optical interactions. However, sputtered polycrystalline AlN is susceptible to scattering and defect-related absorption losses, thereby inducing limited Q-factors. Here, we demonstrate single-crystalline AlN epitaxially grown on sapphire as a novel nonlinear platform for broadband chip-scale frequency comb generation. We fabricate an AlN-on-sapphire microring with a high loaded Q-factor of 1.1 x 10(6) and achieve a pure broadband Kerr comb with observable spectral lines ranging from similar to 145 to 275 THz and a low parametric threshold of similar to 25 mW. As crystalline AlN exhibits strong Raman gain, we further investigate the influence of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) on four-wave mixing (FWM) by comparing the nonlinear process in AlN chips with distinct geometries. By locating the pump in a normal dispersion regime, we attain a wideband Raman comb via Raman-assisted FWM and observe a sharp "subcomb" formation via avoided mode crossing. The interplay between FWM and SRS observed in AlN is also applicable to other crystalline platforms.
Artificial Cnoidal Wave Breathers in Optical Microresonators

Abstract:Breathers are localized structures that undergo a periodic oscillation in their duration and amplitude. Optical microresonators, benefiting from their high quality factor, provide an ideal test bench for studying the breathing phenomena. In the monochromatically pumped microresonator system, intrinsic breathing instabilities are widely observed in the form of temporal dissipative Kerr solitons which only exist in the effectively red detuned regime. Here, we proposed a novel bichromatic pumping scheme to create compulsive breathing microcombs via respectively distributing two pump lasers at the effectively blue and red detuned side of a single resonance. We experimentally discover the artificial cnoidal wave breathers and molecular crystal-like breathers in a chip-based silicon nitride microresonator, and theoretically describe their intriguing temporal dynamics based on the bichromatic pumping Lugiato-Lefever equation. In particular, the corresponding breathing microcombs exhibit diverse comb line spacing ranging from 2 to 17 times of the free spectral range of the resonator. Our discovery not only provides a simple and robust method to produce microcombs with reconfigurable comb line spacing, but also reveals a new type of breathing waves in driven dissipative nonlinear systems.

Abstract:Frequency comb generation in microresonators at visible wavelengths has found applications in a variety of areas such as metrology, sensing, and imaging. To achieve Kerr combs based on four-wave mixing in a microresonator, dispersion must be in the anomalous regime. In this work, we demonstrate dispersion engineering in a microbubble resonator (MBR) fabricated by a two-CO$_2$ laser beam technique. By decreasing the wall thickness of the MBR down to 1.4 $\mu$m, the zero dispersion wavelength shifts to values shorter than 764 nm, making phase matching possible around 765 nm. With the optical \textit{Q}-factor of the MBR modes being greater than $10^7$, four-wave mixing is observed at 765 nm for a pump power of 3 mW. By increasing the pump power, parametric oscillation is achieved, and a frequency comb with 14 comb lines is generated at visible wavelengths.

Abstract:To date there are extensive studies of optical nonlinearities in whispering gallery resonators (WGRs) in the near and mid-infrared wavelengths. Pushing this research into the visible region is equally valuable. Here, we demonstrate a Kerr frequency comb and Raman lasing at 462 nm in an SiO2 WGR. Notably, due to the high optical intensities achieved, photodarkening is unavoidable and can quickly degrade the optical quality of both the coupling optical nanofiber and the microcavity even at very low pump powers. Nonetheless, stable stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and hyper-parametric oscillation in normally dispersed WGRs is demonstrated in the presence of photodarkening by taking advantage of in-situ thermal bleaching. These observations highlight the challenges of silica-based, short wavelength nonlinear optics in high quality, small mode volume devices. We propose a method to overcome this apparent limitation and demonstrate blue-band nonlinear optical processes in silica WGRs, thus providing a baseline for optics research in the blue region for any optical devices fabricated from SiO2.

Abstract:In optical microresonators, stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) competes with four-wave mixing process and impact Kerr comb generation. Here, we demonstrate Raman frequency combs in poly-crystalline aluminum nitride (AlN) microring resonators. The Raman shifts at transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) polarizations are characterized from AlN straight waveguides using backscattering geometries. In poly-crystalline AlN microring resonators, the frequency matching of cavity resonances with broad Raman gain enhances the SRS and leads to Raman-assisted frequency combs. As a result, comb lines near Raman scattering regions of AlN are generated.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs enable state-of-the-art applications including frequency metrology, optical clocks, astronomical measurements, and sensing. Recent demonstrations of microresonator-based Kerr frequency combs or microcombs pave the way to scalable and stable comb sources on a photonic chip. Generating microcombs in the visible wavelength range, however, has been limited by large material dispersion and optical loss. Here we demonstrate a scheme for efficiently generating visible microcomb in a high Q aluminum nitride microring resonator. Enhanced Pockels effect strongly couples infrared and visible modes into hybrid mode pairs, which participate in the Kerr microcomb generation process and lead to strong Cherenkov radiation in the visible band of an octave apart. A surprisingly high conversion efficiency of 22% is achieved from the pump laser to the visible comb. We further demonstrate a robust frequency tuning of the visible comb by more than one free spectral range and apply it to the absorption spectroscopy of a water-based dye molecule solution. Our work marks the first step towards high-efficiency visible microcomb generation and its utilization, and it also provides insights on the significance of Pockels effect and its strong coupling with Kerr nonlinearity in a single microcavity device.

Abstract:In nonlinear microresonators with strong stimulated Raman scattering effect, it is difficult if not impossible to generate Kerr soliton microcombs with a small free spectral range (FSR) (< 100 GHz) due to the competition between the Raman and Kerr effects. In this paper, we overcome this limitation by using odd-period photonic crystal microrings (PCMs). Numerical simulations on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) PCM show that a small frequency shift (5 GHz) induced by the photonic crystal structure can moderately suppress the Raman effect, such that chaotic microcombs with a small FSR can be generated. With a larger frequency shift (e.g. ≥ 10 GHz), the Raman effect is significantly suppressed, and the soliton microcombs can be generated. For comparison, without the frequency shift, only Raman lasing can be achieved in a conventional microring. To investigate the applicability of the proposed method in other material platforms, we carried out simulations for the aluminium nitride (AlN) PCM. The results are comparable to those obtained on the SOI PCM. Our method opens a new approach to the generation of small FSR Kerr soliton microcombs in microresonators with strong Raman effect, which is important for expanding the available nonlinear platforms and applications such as telecommunications, radio-frequency photonics, and astronomical spectrographs.

Engineered Raman Lasing in Photonic Integrated Chalcogenide Microresonators

Abstract:Chalcogenide glass (ChG) is an attractive material for integrated nonlinear photonics due to its wide transparency and high nonlinearity, and its capability of being directly deposited and patterned on Silicon wafer substrates. It has a singular Raman effect among amorphous materials. Yet, the Raman lasing performance in high quality and chip integrated ChG microresonators remains unexplored. Here, we demonstrate an engineered Raman lasing dynamic based on home developed photonic integrated high-Q ChG microresonators. With a quality factor above 10^6, we achieve the record-low lasing threshold 3.25 mW among integrated planar photonic platforms. Both the single-mode Raman lasers and a broadband Raman-Kerr comb are observed and characterized, which is dependent on the dispersion of our flexible photonic platform and engineered via tuning the waveguide geometric size. The tunability of such a chipscale Raman laser is also demonstrated through tuning the pump wavelength and tuning the operating temperature on the chip. This allows for the access of single-mode lasing at arbitrary wavelengths in the range 1615-1755 nm. Our results may contribute to the understanding of rich Raman and Kerr nonlinear interactions in dissipative and nonlinear microresonators, and on application aspect, may pave a way to chip-scale efficient Raman lasers that is highly desired in spectroscopic applications in the infrared.

We achieve mode-locked states in an X-cut LNOI chip through sufficient suppression of the Raman effect via cavity geometry control. Our analysis of the Raman effect provides guidance for the development of future chip-based photonic devices on the LNOI platform.

Efficient Raman lasing and Raman-Kerr interaction in an integrated silicon carbide platform

Abstract:Implementing stimulated Raman scattering in a low-loss microresonator could lead to Raman lasing. Here, we report the demonstration of an efficient Raman laser with $>50 \%$ power efficiency in an integrated silicon carbide platform for the first time. By fine tuning the free spectral range (FSR) of 43-$\mu$m-radius silicon carbide microresonators, the Stokes resonance corresponding to the dominant Raman shift of $777\ \text{cm}^{-1}$ ($23.3$ THz) is aligned to the center of the Raman gain spectrum, resulting in a low power threshold of $2.5$ mW. The peak Raman gain coefficient is estimated to be ($0.75 \pm 0.15) \ \text{cm}/\text{GW}$ in the 1550 nm band, with an approximate full width at half maximum of ($120 \pm 30$) GHz. In addition, the microresonator is designed to exhibit normal dispersion at the pump wavelength near 1550 nm while possessing anomalous dispersion at the first Stokes near 1760 nm. At high enough input powers, a Kerr microcomb is generated by the Stokes signal acting as the secondary pump, which then mixes with the pump laser through four-wave mixing to attain a wider spectral coverage. Furthermore, cascaded Raman lasing and occurrence of multiple Raman shifts, including $204\ \text{cm}^{-1}$ ($6.1$ THz) and $266\ \text{cm}^{-1}$ ($8.0$ THz) transitions, are also observed. Finally, we show that the Stokes Raman could also help broaden the spectrum in a Kerr microcomb which has anomalous dispersion at the pump wavelength. Our example of a 100-GHz-FSR microcomb has a wavelength span from 1200 nm to 1900 nm with 300 mW on-chip power.

Broadband Visible Wavelength Microcomb Generation In Silicon Nitride Microrings Through Air-Clad Dispersion Engineering

Abstract:The development of broadband microresonator frequency combs at visible wavelengths is pivotal for the advancement of compact and fieldable optical atomic clocks and spectroscopy systems. Yet, their realization necessitates resonators with anomalous dispersion, an arduous task due to the prevailing normal dispersion regime of materials within the visible spectrum. In this work, we evince that silicon nitride microring resonators with air cladding on top and sides -- a deviation from the frequently employed silica-embedded resonators -- allows for the direct generation of broadband microcombs in the visible range. We experimentally demonstrate combs pumped at 1060~nm (283~THz) that reach wavelengths as short as 680~nm (440 THz), and combs pumped at 780~nm (384 THz) that reach wavelengths as short as 630 nm (475 THz). We further show through simulations that microcombs extending to wavelengths as low as 461 nm (650 THz) should be accessible in this platform.

Recently, silicon carbide has emerged as a compelling platform due to its unique optical properties. In this study, we demonstrate Raman-assisted and Kerr optical frequency generation in a 4H-silicon carbide-on-insulator microresonator. By pumping the transverse electric (TE00) mode within the device, we observe a stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) Stokes with the Raman shift at approximately 775 cm-1, achieved with an on-chip power of 350 mW. Furthermore, by red-tuning the TE00 pump wavelength, we have achieved the coexistence of Raman and Kerr frequency combs. Using another device on the same chip with light variation of the taper we can observe the Raman and Kerr frequency combs within a spectral bandwidth ranging from ∼ 1440 to 1960 nm. The inclusion of the Raman-assisted comb extends the comb's coverage into longer wavelength regimes, making it highly desirable for spectroscopy applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate stable microresonator Kerr soliton frequency combs in a III-V platform (AlGaAs on SiO$_2$) through quenching of thermorefractive effects by cryogenic cooling to temperatures between 4~K and 20~K. This cooling reduces the resonator's thermorefractive coefficient, whose room-temperature value is an order of magnitude larger than that of other microcomb platforms like Si$_3$N$_4$, SiO$_2$, and AlN, by more than two orders of magnitude, and makes soliton states adiabatically accessible. Realizing such phase-stable soliton operation is critical for applications that fully exploit the ultra-high effective nonlinearity and high optical quality factors exhibited by this platform.

Abstract:A high-Q silica whispering-gallery mode microresonator is an attractive platform on which to demonstrate a broad and phase-locked Raman comb in various wavelength regimes. Raman combs can be used for applications such as compact pulse laser sources, sensors, optical clocks, and coherence tomography. However, the formation dynamics of a Raman comb has not been well exploited. Here we study the dynamics of the Raman comb formation in silica rod microresonators, which have cavity free spectral ranges in microwave rates. We generated a Raman comb with a smooth spectral envelope and also observed the transition between two Raman combs located at different center wavelengths. The transition behavior was obtained when we changed the pump detuning and the coupling strength between the microresonator and fiber. We also explain these phenomena by using a simple model based on coupled mode equations.
