Abstract:Closed supercritical CO2 (sCO2) power systems require steels that can resist corrosion in high temperature CO2 containing different impurities at ppm levels. However, potential impurity effects on Fe-16Cr steels are not well understood. Herein we evaluated the corrosion behavior of 316 L steel in sCO2 containing 100 ppm O2, SO2 or H2O at 600 degrees C and 20 MPa. All investigated impurities enhanced Fe-oxide nodule formation, leading to higher carburization in underlying substrate. Presence of O2 caused transition of chromia scale into Fe-Cr spinel, because Cr supply from underlying substrate could not meet the consumption. Spallation occurred when 316 L was exposed with SO2 impurity, attributed to the formation of sulfides within and beneath the oxide scales. H2O impurity showed relatively low damage to protective chromia layer with localized aggravation. Corrosion mechanisms related to impurities were unraveled based on experimental results and thermodynamic analysis.

Abstract:Chloride ion concentration threshold is a crucial parameter for evaluating the durability of reinforced concrete. This study aimed to develop a novel expression method for this threshold by analyzing the open-circuit potential of steel in simulated mortar pore solution across three pH values. Concurrently, the correlation between pitting potential and chloride ion concentration was examined through potentiodynamic polarization testing. Additionally, Mott-Schottky analysis facilitated the investigation of the passivation film structure on the steel under both passivation and depassivation conditions. By integrating the analysis of the open-circuit potential and pitting potential models in the simulated solution, a time-dependent relationship curve between the chloride ion threshold and time was established. The findings reveal that the steel’s passivation film comprises a dual-layer structure, with its corrosion resistance enhancing as the pH value of the simulated mortar pore solution increases. Furthermore, within the simulated mortar pore solution, the chloride ion concentration threshold exhibited a decreasing trend over time, suggesting a minimum threshold value exists. This research provides a significant foundation for forecasting the corrosion state of steel in steel-reinforced engineering projects.

Abstract:The stress corrosion cracking mechanism of X80 carbon steel under the combined actions of chloride and bicarbonate ions in alternating wet-dry environment was investigated by performing slow strain rate tensile test and in-situ electrochemical detection during the SCC process under constant load. The results showed that the oxidation and reduction reaction cycle of iron oxide during wet-dry cycle would accelerate the corrosion process. The pitting under the corrosion product layer at high concentrations of chloride and bicarbonate was the origin of SCC under the action of stress concentration, which made steel display high SCC susceptibility.

Abstract:Pitting and localized corrosion of carbon steel is considered to be a complex process influenced by a wide range of parameters such as temperature, bulk solution pH, and chloride ion concentration. Solution pH is known to influence corrosion product characteristics and morphology in CO2- and H2S-containing corrosion systems. However, from the perspective of pitting corrosion in CO2-saturated environments, the extent to which bulk pH of solutions and the presence of corrosion products influence localized attack is still not clearly understood. This paper presents an investigation into the role of pH on the characteristics of corrosion product and pitting corrosion behavior of X65 carbon steel (UNS K03014) in CO2-saturated brine. Pitting corrosion studies were conducted over 168 h at 50°C in 3.5 wt% NaCl solutions at different bulk pH (buffered to pH values of 6.6 and 7.5 in some cases) in order to understand and correlate the role of pH on corrosion product morphology, chemistry, initiation, and propagation of pits within each distinct environment. Corrosion product composition and morphology are identified through a combination of electrochemical and surface analysis techniques, which include scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. The extent of corrosion damage of the carbon steel is evaluated through the implementation of surface interferometry to study discrete pit geometry, namely the size, depth, and aspect ratio. Results indicate that the process of pit initiation and propagation of carbon steel in CO2 corrosion environment is different depending upon bulk solution pH. At low pH (pH values starting at 3.8), pitting initiates faster and propagates steadily along with significant uniform corrosion resulting from the formation of an “amorphous” form of FeCO3. At higher pH, uniform corrosion is significant, while pitting initiates with increasing protection from crystalline FeCO3. At a pH value of 7.5, pitting corrosion initiation occurs after and/or during pseudo-passivation is achieved as a result of the formation of a “protective and pseudo-passivating” FeCO3 film.

Abstract:The Cl--induced corrosion of metals and alloys is of relevance to a wide range of engineered materials, structures, and systems. Because of the challenges in studying pitting corrosion in a quantitative and statistically significant manner, its kinetics remain poorly understood. Herein, by direct, nano- to micro-scale observations using vertical scanning interferometry (VSI), we examine the temporal evolution of pitting corrosion on AISI 1045 carbon steel over large surface areas in Cl--free, and Cl--enriched solutions. Special focus is paid to examine the nucleation and growth of pits, and the associated formation of roughened regions on steel surfaces. By statistical analysis of hundreds of individual pits, three stages of pitting corrosion, namely, induction, propagation, and saturation, are quantitatively distinguished. By quantifying the kinetics of these processes, we contextualize our current understanding of electrochemical corrosion within a framework that considers spatial dynamics and morphology evolutions. In the presence of Cl- ions, corrosion is highly accelerated due to multiple autocatalytic factors including destabilization of protective surface oxide films and preservation of aggressive microenvironments within the pits, both of which promote continued pit nucleation and growth. These findings offer new insights into predicting and modeling steel corrosion processes in mid-pH aqueous environments.

Abstract:Electrochemical tests were employed to study the chloride, sulfate and carbonate ions synergistically effects on pitting. The results showed that SO4 2- increased the pitting potential of 316L at first and then decreased, peaking at 0.2 M. In this case, the highest critical pitting temperature (12 °C), the breakdown potential (0.45 VSCE), and the maximum impedance (257 kΩ cm2) were obtained. The existing CO3 2– raised the pitting potential but accelerated the general corrosion of 316L surface. The effective adsorption area based on the competitive adsorption mechanism of the anions was proposed to interpret the pitting and the passivation behaviors of 316L, and the properties of the passive film were comprehensive analyzed.

Abstract:The widespread use of calcium sulfoaluminate cement (CSA) for rapidly repairing marine structures exposed to high chloride levels has spurred limited investigation into the corrosion behavior of reinforcements in low-pH CSA systems. To address this knowledge gap, researchers conducted a comprehensive study on the impact of primary ions within CSA (OH- , SO42-, and Al (OH)4- ) on steel rebars in simulated pore solutions (SPSs). The investigation employed various analytical methods such as Mott-Schottky/cyclic polarization curves, corrosion current, impedance spectrum analyses, and microstructural examinations. The results demonstrate that SO42diminishes the corrosion resistance of reinforcements by depassivating them, consequently reducing the critical chloride concentration (Ccrit). However, this influence is mitigated with elevated OH- or Al(OH)4- concentrations. Furthermore, the presence of Al(OH)4- in the pore solution contributes to an increased Ccrit by stabilizing alkalinity via OH- hydrolysis. Based on the empirical findings, the researchers developed an empirical formula for Ccrit, offering insights into estimating the service life of CSA-based concrete structures in real marine environments.

Abstract:The effect of chloride concentration on the passivity breakdown of carbon steel in deaerated pH = 13.5 alkaline solution was investigated. The results show that chloride plays an important role for the pitting corrosion of carbon steel. When NaCl ≤ 1 M , the carbon steel is passive but for 1 M < NaCl < 2 M , the carbon steel transfers from passive to passivity breakdown. When NaCl ≥ 2 M , passive film breakdown occurs and the passivity breakdown potential ( E b ) of carbon steel is linearly-dependent on the logarithm of the chloride activity in the alkaline solution. As predicted by the PDM, the near-normal distribution of E b is well indicated by the near straight line in the cumulative distribution probability. The analysis in this study gives us a method to calculate the E b of carbon steel in alkaline solution and its distribution for any given chloride concentration.

Abstract:2205 duplex stainless steel is widely applied in many national dividend departments, because of its good mechanical properties, the anti-corrosive performance. In this paper we use electrochemical polarization curve and electrochemical impedance to study the pitting performance of 2205 duplex stainless steel under the acetic acid as well as containing the chloride ion condition. The result shows that 2205 duplex stainless steel have the good anti-corrosive performance under the acetic acid environment, but the corrosion tendency are increased as results of the existence of chloride ion. At the same time, enlarged the pitting probability.

Abstract:The corrosion behavior of 1018 carbon steel in LiCl/H2O mixtures has been evaluated by using potentiodynamic polarization curves, electrochemical noise and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. Two different concentrations of LiCl were employed, namely 35 and 40 wt. %, and the testing temperatures included 25, 35 and 70 °C. It was found that the steel showed a passive zone; the corrosion current density value increased with an increase in the solution temperature and concentration. The pitting potential value decreased with an increase in the testing temperature and the solution concentration. The corrosion process was under charge transfer control. This mechanism was unaltered either by the solution temperature or concentration. The charge transfer resistance value decreased with an increase in both the solution temperature and concentration. A localized, pitting type of corrosion dominated the corrosion morphology at 25 and 35 °C, whereas at 70 °C, the main type of attack was a mixed type of corrosion.

Abstract:The influence of concentration of fluoride ion on the pitting corrosion behavior of 316SS has been investigated by means of measuring the critical pitting temperature (CPT) in 0.1 mol/L NaCl solution. The results showed that the CPT decreased and the open circuit potential also decreased with increasing concentration of fluoride ion. Metastable pitting occurred just below the CPT, while stable pits could only be formed above the CPT. The morphologies of the pits below and above the CPT had been obtained by scanning electron microscope (SEM).

Abstract:The corrosive environment in sulfur-containing equipment is often complicated and changeable. This study adopted the Taguchi method to optimize the immersion test, and the L27(313) orthogonal table was used to design an immersion corrosion experiment. The influence of four factors, namely, the total acid number (TAN), sulfur, chlorine, and water, on the corrosion of AISI 1020 in the oil phase was studied. It showed that the effect of chlorine is the most pronounced and that of sulfur is second followed by that of the TAN and H2O. It was also found that the effect of H2O exceeds that of the TAN after 336 h; meanwhile, the interaction between the four factors varies over time and stabilizes after 336 h. Moreover, corrosion rate curves reveal that the stable corrosion product film formed on the metal surface gradually slows down the corrosion process. Analysis of corrosion morphology and product composition was done by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Overall, the synergistic effect of the corrosion rate changing with time provides a certain reference for the corrosion protection of sulfur-containing storage equipment.

Abstract:Simulated occluded solutions were used to study the accelerating effect within pits, crevices, or stress corrosion cracks for the system of 18-8 steel in Cl− solution. A critical pH value of ≅ 1.3 ([Cl−] ≅1.5 M) was found when the corrosion rate started to accelerate rapidly as the pH value continued to decrease. The rise of external potential above the critical potential is only necessary at the initial stage to cause the pH value to fall and the Cl− to increase in the pits or cracks. After the occluded pH dropped below the critical point, the action of internal HCl acidic cell will predominate during propagation of the cracks or pits, so as to cause hydrogen embrittlement ahead of the crack tip.

Abstract:The anodic behaviour of the major pure metals of which stainless steels are composed has been studied in chloride-containing aqueous solutions at neutral and acidic pH values, both before and after a nitriding treatment. This suggests a mechanism by which molybdenum and nitrogen favourably influence the pitting resistance of austenitic stainless steels, and that the mechanisms are different at different stages of pit formation. It is shown that nitrogen is able to prevent the transpassive dissolution of molybdenum from the passive film of austenitic stainless steels. X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy has shown also that the NH3 ligand is formed in the anodically formed films on nitrided molybdenum as well as in passive films formed on nitrogen-bearing stainless steels. This raises the local pH in the film/substrate interface which leads the electrode reactions to favour the forming of molybdate, a beneficial species which enhances the passivity of stainless steels, instead of forming MoO3, the loose transpassive product.

Abstract:The corrosion behavior of carbon steel under the coexistence of carbon dioxide and SRB was studied by means of corrosion weight loss, SEM, EDS, in situ pH test, and other methods. The results showed that Chloride ions, temperature, pH, and oxygen coexist with iron bacteria will affect the corrosion under the coexistence of CO2 and SRB, and SRB tends to grow in a favorable environment for itself, and the corrosion rate of X52N at 42 days is slightly higher than that at 21 days. However, the pitting depth increased sharply from 21.20 µm in 21 days to 39.79 µm in 42 days. So that the corrosion can be divided into two stages. First, SRB catalyze the dissolution of FeCO3, leading to local uniform corrosion. Second, SRB directly obtain electrons from the metal surface, resulting in local pitting. In addition, the environment under the stable mineralized biofilm was found to be slightly alkaline.

Abstract:In this work, the synergistic inhibitions of tungstate (WO42−) and molybdate (MoO42−) anions, including role and mechanism, on the initiation of pitting corrosion (PC) for Q235 carbon steel in chloride (Cl−) solution were investigated with electrochemical and surface techniques. The pitting potential (Ep) of the Q235 carbon steel in WO42− + MoO42- + Cl− solution was more positive than that in WO42− + Cl− or MoO42− + Cl− solution; at each Ep, both peak potential and affected region of active pitting sites in WO42− + MoO42− + Cl− solution were smaller than those in WO42− + Cl− or MoO42− + Cl− solution. WO42− and MoO42− showed a synergistic role to inhibit the PC initiation of the Q235 carbon steel in Cl− solution, whose mechanism was mainly attributed to the influences of two anions on passive film. Besides iron oxides and iron hydroxides, the passive film of the Q235 carbon steel formed in WO42− + Cl−, MoO42− + Cl−, or WO42− + MoO42− + Cl− solution was also composed of FeWO4 plus Fe2(WO4)3, Fe2(MoO4)3, or Fe2(WO4)3 plus Fe2(MoO4)3, respectively. The film resistance and the defect quantity for Fe2(WO4)3 plus Fe2(MoO4)3 film were larger and smaller than those for FeWO4 plus Fe2(WO4)3 film and Fe2(MoO4)3 film, respectively; for the inhibition of PC initiation, Fe2(WO4)3 plus Fe2(MoO4)3 film provided better corrosion resistance to Q235 carbon steel than FeWO4 plus Fe2(WO4)3 film and Fe2(MoO4)3 film did.

Abstract:Pitting corrosion of carbon steel in sodium chloride solution induced by Ce[Formula: see text] and the synergistic inhibition effects of Ce[Formula: see text] and Zn[Formula: see text]/SiO[Formula: see text] were investigated using in-situ observation and electrochemical methods. The results showed that the presence of Ce[Formula: see text] could result in severe pitting corrosion and a positive shift in the corrosion potential. It was found that individual Ce[Formula: see text], Zn[Formula: see text], or SiO[Formula: see text] had low inhibition efficiencies, whereas the combination of Ce[Formula: see text] and Zn[Formula: see text] or SiO[Formula: see text] proved to be highly effective in inhibiting the development of pits in two different ways and in enhancing the corrosion resistance. The pitting corrosion and inhibition mechanisms were discussed based on the results.

Abstract:The influence of SO42- on the pitting corrosion behavior of 316 stainless steel has been studied by measuring the relationship of corrosion current and temperature in 0.5% Cl- solutions with different concentrations of SO42- at constant applied potentials. The results showed that with the increase of SO42- concentration, the passivation current increased and the open circuit potential decreased; When the concentration of SO42- was less (more) than 0.42%, the critical pitting temperature was lower (higher) than that without SO42-. The inhibition and acceleration effects of SO42- on the pitting corrosion were discussed by analyzing the mechanism of the ion-competitive adsorption.
