Abstract:In order to investigate the space charge distribution in the needle-plate electrode, a simulation based on the bipolar charge transport model was developed, where the tip radius of needle was $5\ \boldsymbol{\mu}\mathbf{m}$ and the distance between the needle tip and the sample bottom was about 3 mm. The needle was set as the positive polarity voltage and the plate was grounded. Firstly, the space charge characteristics of the cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) under the plate-plate electrode were measured by a modified pulse electro-acoustic (PEA) measurement system. The injection level of space charge increased with the electric field, and the charge trapping after the charge injection field (≈10 kV/mm) could be demonstrated by the space-charge-limited current. Thus much trapped charge would accumulate near the needle due to the extremely high electric field in the needle tip. In the needle-plate simulation, there was much positive trapped charge but little negative trapped charge, and the positive charge region was in shape of a water drop. The maximum density and the injection depth of positive trapped charge increased with the increased voltage. Positive trapped charge near the needle decreased rapidly while that away from the needle decreased slowly. The result was due to the large gradient of the charge near the needle and the small gradient of the charge away from the needle. Moreover, the rate of charge decreasing near the needle increased as the voltage increased.
