Abstract:Rational design and construction of electrode materials with advanced nanostructures and composition superiority have been recognized as an effective strategy for enhancing electrochemical performance of supercapacitors (SCs). Herein, we have successfully designed a novel hierarchical (NiCo)Se2/CoFe2Se4 composite material with Co-FePBAs nanocubes anchored on nanorods by sequential hydrothermal reaction, precipitate reaction and selenylation treatment, which have been further served as electrode material for supercapacitors. As a result, the (NiCo)Se2/CoFe2Se4 hybrid electrode exhibits large specific capacity of 197 mAh/g at 3 mA/cm2, remarkable rate property and extraordinary cycle lifetime. Moreover, the assembled (NiCo)Se2/CoFe2Se4//AC device demonstrates a superior energy density of 0.912 mWh/cm2 at 1.93 mW/cm2 with preeminent cycle performance. The experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) proclaim that the synergistic effect of (NiCo)Se2 and CoFe2Se4 can generate more active sites, improve conductivity, as well as encourage the kinetics of the electrochemical reaction, thus achieving excellent electrochemical performance.

Abstract:The research on the structure of advanced electrode materials is significant in the field of supercapacitors. Herein, for the first time, we propose a novel 3D/3D composite structure by a multi-step process, in which 3D hollow NiCo LDH nanocages are immobilized on 3D sea urchin-like CoO microspheres. Results show that the 3D CoO acts as an efficient and stable channel for ion diffusion, while the hollow NiCo LDH pro -vides abundant redox-active sites. The calculated results based on density function theory (DFT) show that the CoO@NiCo LDH heterostructure has an enhanced density of states (DOS) near the Fermi level and strong adsorption capacity for OH-, indicating its excellent electrical conductivity and electrochem-ical reaction kinetics. As a result, the CoO@NiCo LDH electrode has an areal specific capacity of 4.71C cm-2 at a current density of 3 mA cm-2 (440.19C g-1 at 0.28 A g-1) and can still maintain 88.76 % of the initial capacitance after 5000 cycles. In addition, the assembled hybrid supercapacitor has an energy density of 5.59 mWh cm-3 at 39.54 mW cm-3.(c) 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Designing core–shell heterostructures with multicomponents, more electroactive sites, hierarchical structures, and stable geometrical configurations is an effective approach to enhance the electrochemical properties of supercapacitors. Herein, we report the fabrication of a hierarchical candied-haws-like NiCo2O4@NiCo-hydrocarbonate heterostructure on Ni foam (NiCo2O4@NiCo-HCs), which consists of NiCo2O4 nanowires acting as “rebars” that are tightly strung with NiCo-HC nanoparticles. The strong interfacial reaction between the NiCo2O4 “core” and the NiCo-HC “shell” accelerates the charge transfer within the heterostructure, while the hierarchical structure containing quantities of paths and pores provides fast ion diffusion throughout the whole electrode, hence remarkably boosting the electrochemical performance of a NiCo2O4@NiCo-HC electrode. As expected, the NiCo2O4@NiCo-HC electrode shows a high specific capacitance of 3216.4 F g–1 at a current density of 1 A g–1 and 2259.9 F g–1 even at 20 A g–1 (1.6-fold that of the NiCo2O4 electrode and 5.5-fold that of NiCo-HCs). In addition, an assembled asymmetric supercapacitor NiCo2O4@NiCo-HCs//AC delivers a high energy density of 47.46 Wh kg–1 at a power density of 708.94 W kg–1, together with 96.2% capacitance retention after 6000 cycles, surpassing most of the reported analogues. These results suggest that our hierarchical candied-haws-like heterostructure design is potential for the performance enhancement of supercapacitors.

Abstract:Herein, hierarchical CuCo2O4@NiMoO4 core-shell nanowire arrays were successfully synthesized on Ni foam via hydrothermal processes as a battery-like electrode. Owing to the unique core-shell structure and the synergetic effect from CuCo2O4 and NiMoO4, the resulting CuCo2O4@NiMoO4 core-shell arrays exhibit a high specific capacitance of 2207 F g(-1) at 1.25 A g(-1) and good rate capability with only about 4.4% capacitance loss after cycling tests. Furthermore, we assemble the corresponding asymmetric supercapacitor using CuCo2O4@NiMoO4 (positive electrode) and activated carbon (negative electrode), which delivers a high energy density (about 40 W h kg(-1)) and good cycle stability. Thereby, these electrochemical performances demonstrated that as-fabricated CuCo2O4@NiMoO4 core-shell arrays are promising candidates as electrodes for high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:Constructing multicomponent electrode materials with a rational structure is an effective route to develop high-performance supercapacitors. We herein report a novel nickel-foam-supported hierarchical CoO@Ni(OH)(2)nanowire-nanosheet core-shell heterostructure array synthesized by a facile hydrothermal-electrodeposition strategy. The core CoO nanowire arrays with good electrical conductivity and shell Ni(OH)(2)nanosheets with thickness of similar to 2 nm synergistically contributes to increased active sites, fast mass transfer, and improved structural stability. Consequently, the optimal CoO@Ni(OH)(2)-400 s architecture delivers a high specific capacitance of 1418.2 F g(-1)at 1 A g(-1)and 93.7% retention after 5000 cycles. Furthermore, the CoO@Ni(OH)(2)//activated carbon asymmetric supercapacitor could achieve an outstanding energy density of up to 92.47 W h kg(-1)at 800 W kg(-1). This simple but effective strategy provides insight into the development of core-shell hierarchical architectures for constructing high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:Ni 0.5 Co 0.5 (OH) 2 nanosheets coated CuCo 2 O 4 nanoneedles arrays were successfully designed and synthesized on carbon fabric. The core/shell nanoarchitectures directly served as the binder-free electrode with a superior capacity of 295.6 mAh g -1 at 1 Ag -1 , which still maintained 220 mAh g -1 even at the high current density of 40 Ag -1 , manifesting their enormous potential in hybrid supercapacitor devices. The asassembled CuCo 2 O 4 @Ni 0.5 Co 0.5 (OH) 2 //AC hybrid supercapacitor device exhibited favorable properties with the specific capacitance as high as 90 Fg -1 at 1 Ag -1 and the high energy density of 32 Wh kg -1 at the power density of 800 Wkg -1 . Furthermore, the as-assembled device also delivered excellent cycling performance(retaining 91.9% of the initial capacitance after 12,000 cycles at 8 Ag -1 ) and robust mechanical stability and flexibility, implying the huge potential of present hierarchical electrodes in energy storage devices.

Abstract:Elaborate design and synthesis of core-shell hybrid structures consisting of multiple components have been considered as the effective approach to developing electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors. Herein, the hybrid structure consisting of CuCo2S4 core and NiMn-layered double hydroxide (NiMn-LDH) shell is hydrothermally in situ synthesized on nickel foam without organic binders as electrode materials. The resultant CuCo2S4@NiMn-LDH core-shell hybrid arrays exhibits a high specific capacitance of 2520 F g(-1) at 2 A g-1, good rate capability with a long cycle lifetime. Additionally, the obtained CuCo2S4@NiMn-LDH serves as the positive electrode while the activated carbon (AC) acts as the negative electrode, which is assembled into an asymmetric supercapacitor. Impressively, the obtained asymmetric supercapacitor (CuCo2S4@NiMn-LDH//AC) delivers a high energy density of 45.8 Wh kg(-)1 at the power density of 1499 W kg(-1). Thereby, these electrochemical performances demonstrate that as-fabricated CuCo2S4@NiMn-LDH core-shell arrays are the promising candidates as electrodes for high-performance supercapacitors.
Hetero-architectured core-shell NiMoO4@Ni9S8/MoS2 nanorods enabling high-performance supercapacitors

Abstract:Abstract: An effective technique for improving electrochemical efficiency is to rationally design hierarchical nanostructures that completely optimize the advantages of single components and establish an interfacial effect between structures. In this study, core-shell NiMoO4@Ni9S8/MoS2 hetero-structured nanorods are prepared via a facile hydrothermal process followed by a direct sulfurization. The resulting hierarchical architecture with outer Ni9S8/MoS2 nanoflakes shell on the inner NiMoO4 core offers plentiful active sites and ample charge transfer pathways in continuous heterointerfaces. Ascribing to the porous core-shell configuration and synergistic effect of bimetal sulfides, the obtained NiMoO4@Ni9S8/MoS2 as electrode material presents an unsurpassed specific capacity of 373.4 F g-1 at 10 A g-1 and remarkable cycling performance in the 6 M KOH electrolyte. This work delivers a rational method for designing highly efficient electrodes for supercapacitors, enlightening the road of exploring low-cost materials in the energy storage domain. Hierarchical core-shelled CoMo layered double hydroxide@CuCo2S4 nanowire arrays/nickel foam for advanced hybrid supercapacitors

Abstract:The development of core-shelled heterostructures with the unique morphology can improve the electrochemical properties of hybrid supercapacitors (HSC). Here, CuCo2S4 nanowire arrays (NWAs) are vertically grown on nickel foam (NF) utilizing hydrothermal synthesis. Then, CoMo-LDH nanosheets are uniformly deposited on the CuCo2S4 NWAs by electrodeposition to obtain the CoMo-LDH@CuCo2S4 NWAs/NF electrode. Due to the superior conductivity of CuCo2S4 (core) and good redox activity of CoMo-LDH (shell), the electrode shows excellent electrochemical properties. The electrode's specific capacity is 1271.4 C g-1 at 1 A g-1, and after 10, 000 cycles, its capacity retention ratio is 92.2 % at 10 A g-1. At a power density of 983.9 W kg-1, the CoMo-LDH@CuCo2S4 NWAs/NF//AC/NF device has an energy density of 52.2 Wh kg-1. This indicates that CoMo-LDH@CuCo2S4/NF has a great potential for supercapacitors.

Abstract:Hierarchical nanotube arrays with complex shell structures are attractive for applications in electrode materials for effectively boosted electrochemical performance, but the construction of such delicate architectures with excellent electrochemical performance is very challenging. Herein, double-shelled nanotube arrays of hierarchical Cu2S@nickel-cobalt layered double hydroxide (Cu2S@NiCo-LDH DSNAs) are synthesized on a Cu foam (CF) substrate with a sequential multi-step strategy, and an integrated electrode is constructed with the nanostructured material. Benefiting from the unique hollow structure and the sophisticated assembly of different nano-sized subunits, the as-prepared hierarchical Cu2S@NiCo-LDH DSNA electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical performances with a high mass loading of 5.0 mg cm(-2), including a high specific capacity of 2.8 mA h cm(-2) (20.4 F cm(-2), 555.6 mA h g(-1)) at 4 mA cm(-2) and remarkable rate capability with 87% capacity retention at 40 mA cm(-2). Furthermore, a quasi-solid-state hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) is assembled with the Cu2S@NiCo-LDH DSNAs and metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived nanoporous carbon (NPC) as the electrodes, exhibiting a high energy density of 1.67 mW h cm(-2) at the power density of 4.25 mW cm(-2).

Abstract:Nanostructure engineering and composition rationalization are crucial for materials to become candidates for high-performance supercapacitor. Herein, a novel core-shell heterostructured electrode, combining CoS hollow nanorods with NiCoMn-layered double hydroxides (LDH) ternary metal nanosheets, were prepared on carbon cloth by reasonably controlled vulcanization and electrodeposition. By optimizing electrodeposition conditions, the material's structure and properties can be fine-tuned. The enhanced capacitance of the optimized carbon cloth (CC)@CoS/NiCoMn-LDH-300 electrode (4256.0 F g−1) lies in the open space provided by CoS and the establishment of a new charge transfer channel across the interfaces of CC@CoS/NiCoMn-LDH-300 nanosheets. This is further demonstrated by Density functional theory (DFT) simulations based on OH− adsorption energy, which produces faster redox charge kinetics and significantly enhances the electrode's energy storage capacity. The hybrid supercapacitor, integrating the optimized CC@CoS/NiCoMn-LDH-300 electrode with active carbon, demonstrates the highest energy density of 86 Wh kg−1 (under the power density of 850 W kg−1) and the long cycle stability of 89.7%. This study aims to go beyond simple binary LDH by constructing a ternary LDH with a hierarchical core-shell heterostructure to provide an effective and feasible new concept for high-performance supercapacitor electrode materials via rational structure design.

Abstract:Constructing hierarchical core‐shell configuration from well‐known metal sulfides is one way to further tune and utilize unique species. Herein, a novel core‐shell structure is developed based on CoS deposited on NiS nanosheets, which involves hydrothermal and electrodeposition method. The micromorphology of the composite electrode can be optimized by adjusting the cycles of electrodeposition. Taking advantages of the highly conductive, open framework of the core‐shell nanolayer, the 5‐NiS@CoS electrode shows a specific capacitance of 1210 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1 (retaining 82% from 1 to 10 A g−1, while NiS substrate is only 39%). The specific capacitance retention rate is 80.94% at 10 A g−1 after 2000 cycles (NiS substrate is 59.6%). Moreover, NiS@CoS//AC asymmetric supercapacitor device delivers an energy density of 24.1 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 752.15 W kg−1 and remarkable stability (over 80% retention after 5000 cycles). This work may prompt the exploration of the synthesis of inexpensive compounds incorporating highly reactive components for supercapacitors.

Abstract:Constructing rational structure and utilizing distinctive components are two important keys to promote the development of high performance supercapacitor. Herein, we adopt a facile two-step method to develop an in situ heterostructure with NiCo-LDH nanowire as core and NiOOH nanosheets as shell on carbon fiber cloth. The resultant NiCo-LDH@NiOOH electrode exhibites a high specific capacitance of about 2622 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) and good cycling stability (88.5% remain after 10000 cycles). This reinforced electrochemical performance is benefit from the distinct core-shell structure, and takes advantage of the synergetic effect to supply more electrochemical active spots and pathways to accelerate electron and ion transport. Furthermore, the fabricated asymmetric supercapacitor of optimized NiCo-LDH@NiOOH//AC device displays a high energy density of 51.7 Wh kg(-1) while the power density is 599 W kg(-1) and presents a satisfying cycling performance.

Abstract:High electrochemical performance of supercapacitor electrodes largely rely on the smart design of nanoarchitectures with scrupulous combination of different active materials. We present a facile method for the multicomponent design of hierarchical Co9S8 hollow nanotubes (CS NTs) wrapped with Ni-Co layered double hydroxides nanosheets (Ni-Co LDH NSs) core-shell high-performance supercapacitors. The CS NTs serve as an ideal backbone with pentagonal cross-section to enhance the conductivity for acting as a "superhighway" for electron transport, whereas the Ni-Co LDH NSs with high electrochemical activity electrodeposited on the surface of CS NTs provide the electroactive sites and enhance the structural stability for faradaic reaction. The CS NTs@Ni-Co LDH NSs hierarchical electrode presents a high specific capacitance of 1020 C g(-1) and high cycling stability of 90.4% after 10,000 cycles. Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) was assembled with CS NTs@Ni-Co LDH NSs as the anode and active carbon as cathode. The as-fabricated ASC shows high energy density of 50 Wh kg(-1) and exhibit superior cyclic stability of 86.4% retention over 5000 cycles, suggesting this electrode is promising for efficient electrochemical capacitors.

Abstract:Hierarchical candied‐haws‐like NiCo2S4@NiCo(HCO3)2 core–shell heterostructure (NiCo2S4@HCs) is designed with NiCo(HCO3)2 polyhedrons being tightly strung by cross‐linked NiCo2S4 nanowires, which demonstrates an ultrahigh capacitance of 3178.2 F g‐1 at 1 A g‐1 and a remarkable rate capability of 2179.3 F g‐1 at 30 A g‐1, and a high energy density of 69.6 W h kg‐1 in asymmetric supercapacitor device. Engineering core‐shell materials with rationally designed architectures and components is an effective strategy to fulfill the high‐performance requirements of supercapacitors. Herein, hierarchical candied‐haws‐like NiCo2S4@NiCo(HCO3)2 core‐shell heterostructure (NiCo2S4@HCs) is designed with NiCo(HCO3)2 polyhedrons being tightly strung by cross‐linked NiCo2S4 nanowires. This rational design not only creates more electroactive sites but also suppresses the volume expansion during the charge–discharge processes. Meanwhile, density functional theory calculations ascertain that the formation of NiCo2S4@HCs heterostructure simultaneously facilitates OH− adsorption/desorption and accelerates electron transfer within the electrode, boosting fast and efficient redox reactions. Ex situ X‐ray diffraction and Raman measurements reveal that gradual phase transformations from NiCo(HCO3)2 to NiCo(OH)2CO3 and then to highly‐active NiCoOOH take place during the cycles. Therefore, NiCo2S4@HCs demonstrates an ultrahigh capacitance of 3178.2 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 and a remarkable rate capability of 2179.3 F g−1 at 30 A g−1. In addition, the asymmetric supercapacitor NiCo2S4@HCs//AC exhibits a high energy density of 69.6 W h kg−1 at the power density of 847 W kg−1 and excellent cycling stability with 90.2% retained capacitance after 10 000 cycles. Therefore, this novel structural design has effectively manipulated the interface charge states and guaranteed the structural integrity of electrode materials to achieve superior electrochemical performances.

A High-Energy-Density Hybrid Supercapacitor with P-Ni(OH)2 @Co(OH)2 Core-Shell Heterostructure and Fe2 O3 Nanoneedle Arrays as Advanced Integrated Electrodes

Abstract:Transition metal hydro/oxides (TMH/Os) are treated as the most promising alternative supercapacitor electrodes thanks to their high theoretical capacitance due to the various oxidation states and abundant cheap resources of TMH/Os. However, the poor conductivity and logy reaction kinetics of TMH/Os severely restrict their practical application. Herein, hierarchical core-shell P-Ni(OH)2 @Co(OH)2 micro/nanostructures are in situ grown on conductive Ni foam (P-Ni(OH)2 @Co(OH)2 /NF) through a facile stepwise hydrothermal process. The unique heterostructure composed of P-Ni(OH)2 rods and Co(OH)2 nanoflakes boost the charge transportation and provide abundant active sites when used as the intergrated cathode for supercapacitors. It delivers an ultrahigh areal specific capacitance of 4.4 C cm-2 at 1 mA cm-2 and the capacitance can maintain 91% after 10 000 cycles, showing an ultralong cycle life. Additionally, a hybrid supercapacitor composed with P-Ni(OH)2 @Co(OH)2 /NF cathode and Fe2 O3 /CC anode shows a wider voltage window of 1.6 V, a remarkable energy density of 0.21 mWh cm-2 at the power density of 0.8 mW cm-2 , and outstanding cycling stability with about 81% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles. This innovative study not only supplies a newfashioned electronic apparatus with high-energy density and cycling stability but offers a fresh reference and enlightenment for synthesizing advanced integrated electrodes for high-performance hybrid supercapacitors.

Abstract:Transition metal sulfides are gaining attention as a new highly capacitive active material for high-performance supercapacitors, however, it is still a challenge that synthesizes a distinctive structure to enhance the electrochemical characteristics and practical applications. In this work, hierarchical structural hybrid metal sulfides (NiCo2S4/Co4S3) based on nanosheets and nanocages are synthesized by sulfurating the NiCo-LDH/ZIF-67 precursors. The NiCo2S4/Co4S3 electrode with remarkable layered and porous structure effectively increase the electrochemical active surface area and accelerate the charge transfer, achieving a high specific capacitance of 8.43 F cm−2 at a current density of 2 mA cm−2 and good cyclic stability. An assembled asymmetric supercapacitor with activated carbon delivers a high energy density of 0.50 mWh cm−2 at a power density of 1.69 mW cm−2. These results demonstrate that NiCo2S4/Co4S3 is an ideal electrode material for high-performance electrochemical energy storage devices.

Abstract:CoO@CoS/Ni3S2 (CoO@Ni-Co-S) hierarchical nanostructure electrode materials are synthesized on nickel foam (NF) through hydrothermal process and electrodeposition. The three dimensional porous CoO@Ni-Co-S hierarchical nanostructure is formed through the interconnection between the CoO nanoneedles and the Ni-Co-S nanosheets. This structure is beneficial for the transport of electrolyte ions and electrons. The CoO@Ni-Co-S nanocomposite exhibits a specific capacitance of 2507 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 (which is superior to CoO@CoS electrode, 1855 F g−1 at 1 A g−1) and possesses a capacitance retention of 84.2% at 10 A g−1. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor with CoO@Ni-Co-S//activated carbon is assembled, and the energy density reaches 110.7 W h kg−1 when the power density is 880 W kg−1. The asymmetric supercapacitor also exhibits an excellent cyclic stability (84.3% capacitance retention over 10,000 cycles). Preliminary results demonstrate that CoO@Ni-Co-S is a promising material for energy storage.

Abstract:Here, the core-core-shell architectural hybrid electrodes were successfully fabricated by coating of NiO nanosheets on Cu2O nanorod arrays with the help of carbon layers (NiO@C@Cu2O NAs), which was directly grown on Cu foam as battery-like electrode for supercapacitor. Starting from commercial Cu foam, the whole synthesis process mainly involved sequential solution immersion, a carbonization treatment and hydrothermal reaction, all of which were simple and potentially scalable. This core-core-shell hierarchical architecture can not only shorten ion diffusion path and optimize charge transport, but also enhance contact surface area. In addition, the carbon layer as an intermediate layer can shorten the charge transfer distance and protect the structural stability of Cu2O . Moreover, ultrathin nanosheet-like NiO coated on the C@Cu2O backbones can provide more contact area with the electrolyte, which is beneficial for the improvement of areal specific capacitance. Serving as the supercapacitor electrodes, the resulting NiO@C@Cu2O NM hybrid electrodes exhibited excellent performance, e.g. high specific capacitances of 2.18 F cm(-2), and a superior long-cycle lifetime and high cycling stability (91.5% after 10,000 cycles). Such enhanced NiO@C@Cu2O NAs with core core-shell hybrid structure are promising battery-like electrode for supercapacitors in future applications.
