Abstract:A free-standing sandwich-structured polyamide 6 (PA 6)@GO@PA 6 nanofiltration membrane intercalated by nanoparticles with high water flux was prepared using electrospraying combined with electrospinning method. According to the XRD patterns, the interlayer spacing of the membrane increases with the TiO2 nanoparticle (NP) intercalated. The TiO2 NP intercalated PA 6@GO (120)@ PA 6 nanofiltration membrane shows a pure water flux up to 13.77 Lm(-2) h(-1) bar(-1) even under an extremely low external pressure (1.0 bar), which increased by 80.7% than that of PA 6@GO (120)@ PA 6 nanofiltration membrane (7.62 Lm(-2) h(-1) bar(-1)) without nanoparticles intercalated, and maintains high organic dye rejection capabilities (> 85% for BF, > 92% for MB, > 99% for MO, and 99.85% for EB). Besides TiO2, other nanoparticles, such as SiO2 and Si3N4 can also improve the water flux and maintain high rejection rate for MO and MB. Furthermore, TiO2 intercalated PA 6@GO (120)@ PA 6 nanofiltration membrane is very stable even under ultrasonication, and shows a high flux for some common solvents (12.32, 4.91, and 1.26 Lm(-2) h(-1) bar(-1) for methanol, ethanol, and NMP, respectively).

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO), a carbonaceous 2D nanomaterial, has received significant interest as a next-generation membrane building block. To fabricate high-performance membranes, an effective strategy involves stacking GO nanosheets in laminated structures, thereby creating unique nanochannel galleries. One outstanding merit of laminar GO membranes is that their permselectivity is readily tunable by tailoring the size of the nanochannels. Here, a high-performance GO-based nanofiltration membrane was developed by intercalating an aromatic crosslinker, α,α/-dichloro-p-xylene (DCX), between the layers in laminated GO nanosheets. Owing to the formation of strong covalent bonds between the crosslinker and the GO, the resulting GO laminate membrane exhibited outstanding structural stability. Furthermore, due to the precisely controlled and enlarged interlayer spacing distance of the developed DCX-intercalated GO membrane, it achieved an over two-fold enhancement in water permeability (11 ± 2 LMH bar−1) without sacrificing the rejection performance for divalent ions, contrary to the case with a pristine GO membrane.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) membranes have been extensively reported for nanofiltration in water system, but their applications in organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) are rarely studied. The instability of GO membranes in solvents seriously impedes their practical applications. Thus, it is highly desirable to fabricate GO membranes with excellent stabilities for OSN. Herein, we report GO membranes crosslinked with boronic acid polymer (BA) for this purpose. These membranes exhibited strong tolerance to various organic solvents, favorable stability and OSN performances. The rejection for acid fuchsin (AF) methanol solution of the GO membrane (mass loading = 44 mg m(-2)) was increased by 20.7% upon addition of 0.5 BA polymer molecules (weight ratio of BA to GO). The optimized membrane maintained high rejection (95.8%) for AF methanol solution with a slight compromise in methanol permeance even after being soaked in water for one month. Moreover, the composite membrane exhibited high rejections for both EB and AF in harsh DMF solvent. As a demonstration, it showed high rejection for vitamin B12 (VB12) of 99.0% with a methanol permeance of 3.94 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1).

Abstract:Organic solvent nanofiltration has been commonly used in the pharmaceutical and petroleum chemistry industries. As a two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial, graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets have great potential for the fabrication of organic solvent nanofiltration membranes, while unfavorable swelling and peeling of the GO membrane have hampered their practical application. Herein, GO hybrid membranes with strong stability were designed using reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanoflake as intercalation and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as binder to improve the interfacial bonding force between the GO hybrid layer and nylon substrate. Benefiting from the excellent structure stability, the optimized GO hybrid membranes exhibited a high water permeance (24.49 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1)), an excellent solvent nanofiltration performance of 28.32 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1) for methanol and 10.11 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1) for ethanol, and a molecular weight cutoff (MWCO) of 320 g mol(-1). Furthermore, the GO hybrid membranes exhibit good antifouling properties with a higher permeance recovery ratio after physical washing with deionized water. Overall, GO hybrid membranes with excellent permeability and antifouling properties are expected to be valuable in the field of organic solvent nanofiltration.
High Performance Hierarchically Nanostructured Graphene Oxide/covalent Organic Framework Hybrid Membranes for Stable Organic Solvent Nanofiltration

Abstract:Stable nanofiltration membranes with excellent tolerance to organic solvents and harsh chemical environment are in high demand from petrochemical, pharmaceutical and oil refinery industries. As promising nanofiltration membrane candidates, graphene oxide lamellar membranes suffer from poor flux as well as instability under practical application conditions. Incorporating additional nanopores were believed to be an effective way to improve solvent transportation while enabling efficient molecular sieving. Herein, as a proof of concept, we designed and prepared a hierarchically nanostructured (i.e. with nanopores, micropores, mesopores) graphene oxide/covalent organic framework (GO/COF) hybrid membrane by intercalating imine-based COF nanoparticles. The imine-based COF nanoparticles with inside hollow structure and in-plane nanopores (1.8 nm) as well as abundant edge functional groups become superhydrophilic, providing additional fast transport nanochannels for water and organic solvents molecules in GO matrix. The hierarchically nanostructured GO/COF hybrid membrane shows excellent water (59 L m (- 2) h (- 1) bar (-1)) and organic solvents (60 and 51 L m (- 2) h (- 1) bar (-1) of methanol and ethanol, respectively) permeate flux at 1 bar and superior organic dyes rejection rates for Methylene blue (320 g/mol) and Congo red (697 g/mol) in ethanol solvent of 99% and 99.82%, respectively. Additionally, intercalating COF could greatly reduce the GO matrix swelling to enhance membrane stability upon exposure to water as well as strong acidic/base solution, enabling a high filtration performance during long-term (48 h) operation. Abstract:Nanofiltration membranes with fast water permeability and good separation efficiency along with acceptable stability are an urgent need for various applications. Herein, graphene oxide (GO) is functionalised with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using different ratios (0.01, 0.02, and 0.03). The Ag NPs have been prepared from orange peel extractive by a green chemical method. The GO/Ag NPs functionalised membranes (ratio 0.03) with thickness ~385 ± 10 nm exhibit an excellent selectivity for various dye molecules with good water permeance, i.e. methylene blue (99 ± 1% rejection and permeability ~287 ± 10 L.m−2.h−1.bar−1), crystal violet (rejection 99 ± 1% and permeability 862 ± 10 L.m−2.h−1.bar−1), safranin O (rejection 99 ± 1% and permeability 625 ± 10 L.m−2.h−1.bar−1) etc. Further, the GO/Ag NPs functionalised membrane (Thickness ~385 ± 10) has been used for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN), and the membrane exhibits high separation efficiency up to ~97% for several dye molecules in methanol solvent along with good permeance (530 ± 20 L.m−2.h−1.bar1). Besides this, these membranes are stable under different conditions for up to ~70 days. We hope that the good separation efficiency and high permeance of GO/Ag NPs composite membranes can be utilised in various wastewater treatment, desalination, and organic solvent nanofiltration applications.
Realizing Small-Flake Graphene Oxide Membranes for Ultrafast Size-Dependent Organic Solvent Nanofiltration

Abstract:Membranes for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) or solvent-resistant nanofiltration (SRNF) offer unprecedented opportunities for highly efficient and cost-competitive solvent recovery in the pharmaceutical industry. Here, we describe small-flake graphene oxide (SFGO) membranes for high-performance OSN applications. Our strategy exploits lateral dimension control to engineer shorter and less tortuous transport pathways for solvent molecules. By using La3+ as a cross-linker and spacer for intercalation, the SFGO membrane selective layer was stabilized, and size-dependent ultrafast selective molecular transport was achieved. The methanol permeance was up to 2.9-fold higher than its large-flake GO (LFGO) counterpart, with high selectivity toward three organic dyes. More importantly, the SFGO-La3+ membrane demonstrated robust stability for at least 24 hours under hydrodynamic stresses that are representative of realistic OSN operating conditions. These desirable attributes stem from the La3+ cross-linking, which forms uniquely strong coordination bonds with oxygen-containing functional groups of SFGO. Other cations were found to be ineffective.

Abstract:In this study, a kind of thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) hollow fiber nanofiltration (NF) membranes was fabricated via incorporating graphene oxide (GO) interlayer using the interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction between piperazine (PIP) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC). The surface morphology and cross-sectional structure of the fabricated TFN hollow fiber NF membrane were extensively investigated. The effects of the PIP concentration, species of the aqueous additives, and the GO loading on the structure and performance of the hollow fiber NF membrane were also investigated in detail and the optimal preparation conditions were achieved. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the successful introduction of the GO interlayer into the composite hollow fiber NF membrane. Moreover, the incorporation of GO interlayer helped to reduce the skin thickness of the composite hollow fiber NF membrane remarkably, and thus helped to increase greatly the water permeance while maintaining a high salt rejection. Under an optimal GO loading of 20.0 mg m(-2), the TFN hollow fiber NF membrane achieved a water permeance of 80 L m(-2) h(-1) MPa-1 and a Na2SO4 rejection of 96.1% for 2000 mg L-1 aqueous Na2SO4 solution, much higher than the interlayer-free thin-film composite (TFC) membrane. Meanwhile, the TFN hollow fiber NF membrane showed an excellent selectivity of Na2SO4 over NaCl, as well as good fouling resistance and long-term stability, demonstrating the vast potential in application for the selective separation of monovalent salt and divalent salt.

Abstract:Hollow fiber (HF) organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membrane has unique self-supporting structure and larger specific surface area over flat OSN membranes, which is much more beneficial for separation processes intensification in chemical related industries. The key of this technology is HF OSN membrane. However, the research works on HF OSN membranes was relatively less till now. In this work, an outer-skinned polyimide HF substrate membrane was spun, and then thin film composite (TFC) membrane was prepared via interfacial polymerization (IP) between ultra-low concentration m-phenylenediamine (MPD) in the aqueous phase and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) in the organic phase on the HF substrate surface, with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as aqueous additives and triethylamine (TEA) as aqueous catalyst, and subsequently accompanied by crosslinking and solvent activation procedures. Further, thin film nanocomposite (TFN) HF OSN membrane incorporated with graphene oxide (GO) was also prepared. The combination of lower MPD concentration with SDS and TEA as additives in the aqueous monomer solution promote the formation of a TFC HF OSN membrane with average roughness of less than 3 nm, and a rhodamine B (RDB) rejection close to 100%, together with an ethanol permeance higher than 12 L m(-2) h(-1) MPa-1 under the optimum fabrication conditions. The optimal TFN membrane at a doping GO content of 5.0 mg L-1 achieves up to 20 L m(-2) h(-1) MPa-1 for the ethanol permeance without sacrificing the RDB rejection (nearly 100%). Moreover, both HF OSN membranes possess good swelling resistance, which proves their application potential in organic solvent system.

Abstract:Membrane-based filtration offers many benefits like lower energy consumption and operating cost for separation in harsh solvents. In particular, such membranes need to have high nanofiltration separation efficiency and high resistance to organic solvents. Unfortunately, the common thin film composite (TFC) - based organic solvent nanofiltration membranes often give low solvent permeance due to the denser skin layer atop the substrate. To address this, we fabricated a covalent organic framework (COF) - incorporated TFC membrane through the in-situ formation of benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxaldehyde (TFB) and graphene oxide (GO) in p -Cymene, a less toxic solvent, with p -Phenylenediamine (PPD) in aqueous phase via interfacial polymerization. The PES-COF-GO membranes exhibited optimal solvent permeance and separation efficiency at an intermediate 0.8 wt% GO, which gave the highest water permeance of 16.2 L/m 2 h bar and a molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of around 325 gmol -1 . In addition, the crosslinked GO-COF layer endowed the membrane with chemical stability in non-polar solvents. The mechanical strength of PES-COF-GO membrane was also improved due to the COF-GO layer atop the PES substrate making the surface tighter and mechanically stronger.

Abstract:Assembling two-dimensional (2D) materials by polyelectrolyte often suffers from inhomogeneous microstructures due to the conventional mixing-and-simultaneous-complexation procedure ("mix-and-complex") in aqueous solution. Herein a "mix-then-on-demand-complex" concept via on-demand in situ cascade anionization and ionic complexation of 2D materials is raised that drastically improves structural order in 2D assemblies, as exemplified by classical graphene oxide (GO)-based ultrathin membranes. Specifically, in dimethyl sulfoxide, the carboxylic acid-functionalized GO sheets (COOH–GOs) were mixed evenly with a cationic poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) and upon filtration formed a well-ordered layered composite membrane with homogeneous distribution of PIL chains in it; next, whenever needed, it was alkali-treated to convert COOH–GO in situ into its anionized state COO––GO that immediately complexed ionically with the surrounding cationic PIL chains. This "mix-then-on-demand-complex" concept separates the ionic complexation of GO and polyelectrolytes from their mixing step. By synergistically combining the PIL-induced hydrophobic confinement effect and supramolecular interactions, the as-fabricated nanofiltration membranes carry interface transport nanochannels between GO and PIL, reaching a high water permeability of 96.38 L m–2 h–1 bar–1 at a maintained excellent dye rejection 99.79% for 150 h, exceeding the state-of-the-art GO-based hybrid membranes. The molecular dynamics simulations support the experimental data, confirming the interface spacing between GO and PIL as the water transport channels.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Traditional technologies for solvent/water separation such as distillation and chromatography remain energy intensive. State-of-the-art organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes exhibit high solvent-solute selectivity, but their ability to discriminate between solvents is limited. Graphene oxide (GO) with homogeneous and tunable 2D nanochannels is a promising solution for this purpose, benefiting from its exceptional transport properties. Here, a one-step pressure-assisted cross-linking strategy was applied to coat GO on the inner surface of hollow fiber membranes. The direction of the external driving force during the assembly of the GO selective layers displays an important influence on the microstructure of the nanochannel and the separation performance. The covalent bonding formed at the GO/polyimide (PI) interface and PI substrate endows the membrane with significantly improved stability in solvent environments. The tunable morphology and hydrophilicity characteristic of the GO layer leads to the rapid transport of acetonitrile while impeding the penetration of water molecules. What's more, the migration route of acetonitrile is shorter than that of water in the cross-linked GO nanochannels. In particular, the cross-linked GO hollow fiber (CGHF) membrane exhibits a high acetonitrile permeance of 145.3 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 , and the dilute acetonitrile solution could be concentrated from 10 wt% to 92.4 ± 3.0 wt%. This means that the elaborately designed nanochannels offer a high energy-efficient prospect for solvent dehydration and OSN.

Abstract:In this work, graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets are synthesized and incorporated into the polyamide (PA) selective layer to develop a novel thin-film composite (TFC) membrane for forward osmosis (FO) application. The chemical structure and morphology of the synthesized GO and GO-incorporated TFC membranes are studied by various characterization techniques. Compared with the control TFC membrane, GO-incorporated TFC membranes exhibit higher water flux and reasonable draw solute rejection. The effects of the GO loading on the membrane morphology and FO performance of the GO-incorporated TFC membranes are investigated systematically in terms of various characterizations and intrinsic separation performance. The influence of the draw solution concentration is also studied. The GO-incorporated TFC membranes also possess lower fouling propensity in FO test than that without embedded GO.
Interlayered Thin-Film Nanocomposite Membrane with Synergetic Effect of COFs Interlayer and GQDs Incorporation for Organic Solvent Nanofiltration

Abstract:The separation performance of current organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes are still not satisfied. In this work, an ultra-thin TpHz covalent organic frameworks (COFs) interlayer was in situ constructed in advance on polyimide substrate, then an ultra-thin polyamide separation layer incorporated with amino-functionalized graphene quantum dots (af-GQDs) was constructed via interfacial polymerization (IP). A high performance interlayered thin-film nanocomposite (iTFN) OSN membrane with integrally covalent bonding structure, ultra -thin and ultra-smooth surface was obtained after post crosslinking and activation. The effect of ultra-low con-centrations for the polyamide reaction monomers, the COFs monomer Tp and the doped af-GQDs nanoparticle reveals that they could help to form a very thin (7-8 nm in thickness) and defect-free skin layer with very smooth surface (about 2.7 nm in roughness). The iTFN OSN membrane shows excellent solvent permeance and solute selectivity, with an ethanol permeance reaching 97.6 L m- 2 h-1 MPa- 1 and an RDB rejection higher than 99%. After a 180 h long-term filtration with 100 mg L-1 RB/DMF solution, it remained an RB rejection of higher than 99%, demonstrating its superior resistance to strong polar solvent. Our work paves a unique way for the fabrication of novel OSN membrane with both in situ constructed nanomaterials interlayer and nanomaterials incorporated in skin layer.
Scalable fabrication of nanoporous multilayer graphene oxide membrane for organic solvent nanofiltration

Abstract:Nanoporous graphene is promising for the fabrication of high-performance organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes owing to the excellent chemical resistance of graphene in organic solvents. Moreover, the nanopores increase solvent permeance by providing diffusion channels. However, conventional chemical and physical etching methods are generally applicable on a laboratory-scale, and the large-scale fabrication of these structures is challenging. Herein, a large-area nanoporous multilayer graphene oxide (NMG) membrane was prepared using a combination of slot-die coating and confined thermal treatment. Graphene oxide (GO) was coated on polymeric supports using a slot-die coater, which is generally used for continuous coating in industry. Afterward, the GO membrane was treated using a hot-pressing method to activate the nanopores on the graphene surface and weld the polymeric support with the graphene layer. The interlayer and pore structure of GO were tuned by modulating the hot-pressing time, and its influence on OSN performance was systemically investigated. The optimized NMG membrane exhibited a high ethanol permeance of 300 Lm−2h−1bar−1 and a sharp molecular weight cut-off of 500 g/mol. Furthermore, the enhanced adhesion between graphene and the polymeric support enables mechanically stable membrane operation under cross-flow conditions for 30 days, which is the longest test time reported for two-dimensional material-based OSN membranes thus far.

Abstract:Novel thin film nanocomposite (TFN) organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes with sandwich-like structure were developed via interfacial polymerization (IP) using both low concentration m-phenylenediamine (MPD) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC), on graphene quantum dots (GQDs)-polyethyleneimine (PEI) modified polyimide substrate surface, and followed by post-IP crosslinking and solvent activation. Such GQDs-interlayered OSN membranes have exhibited a remarkable reduced thickness (about 25 nm) and an ultra-low average surface roughness (less than 2 nm) of their IP skin layers, respectively. Both material features are rarely reported in literature. Meanwhile, our GQDs-interlayered OSN membranes have shown an increased Rhodamine B (479 Da) rejection (from 87.4% to 98.7%) and an increased ethanol permeance (from 33.5 to 40.3 Lm(-2) h(-1)MPa(-1)) compared with the pristine OSN membrane. Superior solvent resistance was demonstrated after long immersion in pure N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) at room temperature for 81 days, and at 80 degrees C for 45 days, and after a long-term consecutively filtration with Rose Bengal (1017 Da) DMF solution at 25 degrees C for 5 days, without scarifying solute rejection. Antifouling properties during the long-term filtration were also indicated. This paper presents a novel GQDs-interlayered strategy in developing high-performance TFN membranes for OSN application.

Abstract:Layered two-dimensional materials can potentially be utilized for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membrane fabrication owing to their precise molecular sieving by the interlayer structure and excellent stability in harsh conditions. Nevertheless, the extensive tortuosity of nanochannels and bulky solvent molecules impede rapid permeability. Herein, nanoporous graphene (NG) with a high density of sp 2 carbon domain was synthesized via sequential thermal pore activation of graphene oxide (GO) and microwave-assisted reduction. Due to the smooth sp 2 carbon domain surfaces and dense nanopores, the microwave-treated nanoporous graphene membrane exhibited ultrafast organic solvent permeance (e.g., IPA: 2278 LMH/bar) with excellent stability under practical cross-flow conditions. Furthermore, the membrane molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) is switchable from 500 Da size of molecule to sub-nanometer-size molecules depending on the solvent type, and this switching occurs spontaneously with solvent change. These properties indicate feasibility of multiple (both binary and ternary) organic mixture separation using a single membrane. The nanochannel structure effect on solvent transport is also investigated using computation calculations.

Abstract:The chemical and physical properties of graphene oxide (GO) would affect the performance of thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane. In this study, the effects of size and layer number of GO on TFN membranes were studied. The larger the size of nanosheets, the more obvious the modification effect on the surface morphology of the TFN membrane, and the better the chlorine resistance of the TFN membrane. As the size of GO becomes smaller, the rejection and flux of TFN membrane are better. The decrease of GO' size could eliminate the phenomenon of flux perk and reduce the decrease of rejection of TFN membranes. And also, because of fewer defects and more lamellar channels, TFN membrane modified with multilayered GO has a higher rejection than GO-TFN membrane when the flux is similar. These results will be helpful to understand the separation mechanism of GO-TFN membrane and optimize the structure of functional layer.

Abstract:There is a lot of research being done on GO lamellar 2D membranes for separating organic solvents and dyes. These membranes are highly sought-after due to their exceptional characteristics. However, existing challenges include inadequate solvent permeability and limited dye rejection capacity due to swelling of membranes. In this study, we proposed a novel technique that employs low-pressure assisted filtration to fabricate nanocomposite membranes using GO and melamine. Remarkably, these composite membranes exhibited outstanding separation performance for dyes (≥99.06 %) in organic solvents, regardless of their positive or negative charges or when present in mixtures. The optimum GO-M0.02 nanocomposite membrane exhibits impressive organic solvent flux (J), attaining a value as high as 50.8 L/m2h (acetone), which is 6.57 times greater than that of the pure GO membrane. Furthermore, these GO-Melamine nanocomposite membranes showed excellent durability against both common and harsh organic solvents, and the flux of solvents through the GO-M0.02 nanocomposite membrane remained almost unchanged even after being immersed in methanol for up to one week. Additionally, the membrane exhibited consistent solvent flux and rejection rates for methyl green during continuous filtration. These results highlight the exceptional stability and immense potential of GO-melamine nanocomposite membranes for real organic solvent nanofiltration.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) membranes are well-known materials for water purification, owing to their unique molecular transport and sieving properties. However, one of the factors that limits their use in aqueous and organic solutions for applications in industries and water treatment plants is their tendency to swell, forming an enlarged interlayer spacing that disintegrates its structure. Here we report stable ethylenediamine-cross-linked GO membranes, which can efficiently permeate water and organic solvents and filter organic solutions containing molecular dyes. The prepared membranes with a 150 nm thickness demonstrated high permeance for water and organic solvents and exhibited a rejection >95% for small organic dyes dissolved in methanol. A dead-end filtration device was used to estimate the performance of the membranes, confirming pure water permeance of 14 L m–2 h–1 bar–1. The acetone permeance was 30 L m–2 h–1 bar–1, and the N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone permeance was 5 L m–2 h–1 bar–1. At the same time, the cross linker prevented the disruption of the sheets. The combination of stability, high performance, and simplicity of fabrication make these membranes advantageous for potential application in aqueous and non-aqueous industrial separations.
