Abstract:Considerable advances in manipulating heat flow in solids have been made through the innovation of artificial thermal structures such as thermal diodes, camouflages, and cloaks. Such thermal devices can be readily constructed only at the macroscale by mechanically assembling different materials with distinct values of thermal conductivity. Here, we extend these concepts to the microscale by demonstrating a monolithic material structure on which nearly arbitrary microscale thermal metamaterial patterns can be written and programmed. It is based on a single, suspended silicon membrane whose thermal conductivity is locally, continuously, and reversibly engineered over a wide range (between 2 and 65 W/m·K) and with fine spatial resolution (10-100 nm) by focused ion irradiation. Our thermal cloak demonstration shows how ion-write microthermotics can be used as a lithography-free platform to create thermal metamaterials that control heat flow at the microscale.

Abstract:Mechanically flexible 3D terahertz photonic crystals (3D-TPCs) are created by the direct-writing technology with a composite ink system composed of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and barium titanate (BaTiO3) nanoparticles. The direct- writing technology allows an easy creation of complex 3D structures with designed geometry, while the refractive indices of the composite ink can be modulated by varying the content of BaTiO3 nanoparticles. Thus, 3D-TPCs with different terahertz properties are obtained by the direct-writing technology. More interestingly, these 3D-TPCs demonstrate a unique tunable terahertz property under external force field due to their mechanical flexibility from the PDMS matrix of the composite ink. Thus, their terahertz property is responsive to external force fields reversibly, which can find novel applications in terahertz technology and other related technological applications.

Abstract:Three-dimensional TiO2 woodpile terahertz photonic crystals with feature size less than 100m were created by the direct writing technique with a TiO2 sol-gel ink. With proper heat treatment, the rheological properties of the TiO2 sol-gel ink were modulated to meet the requirement to construct 3D-TPCs with feature size less than 100m by the direct writing technique. Well-crystallized rutile TiO2 3D-TPCs were obtained by the calcination process to provide the required high refractive indices, while the lattice periods of these TiO2 3D-TPCs could be changed to tune their terahertz properties. With the increase of the lattice period, a shift of their THz photonic band gap peaks toward the lower frequency was observed in both the simulated and experimental investigations.

Abstract:This paper presents a two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal structure based on graphene surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) for terahertz wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) applications. By etching a periodic array of equal-diameter cylindrical holes with the same height in the ground, a periodic SPP effective index profile of 2D photonic crystal can be created on graphene with a single gate voltage between graphene and ground. Based on this uneven ground structure, a photonic crystal multimode interference (MMI) WDM has been demonstrated. Simulation results show that the designed device exhibits isolations of higher than 17.30 dB and bandwidth of 0.06 THz at both frequencies.

Abstract:One dimensional photonic crystal structure with a vanadium dioxide (VO2) layer sandwiched by germanium (Ge) and zinc sulfide (ZnS) layers was deposited using physical vapor deposition (PVD) combined with spin-coating method (SCM). Microstructure of this multilayer is characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The result shows a high accordance with design. The phase transition of VO2 induced mid-infrared modulation was studied by analyzing the measured radiant temperatures and hemispherical total emissivity. The trend of those two data varies with different thickness of VO2, which provides guidance to decide the thickness of VO2 at certain circumstance.

Abstract:Room temperature stable excitons in layered two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) offer a unique route for engineering light and matter interactions. Due to the strong optical dispersion near the excitonic transitions, a high refractive index arises in these ultrathin semiconductors.([1,2]) Utilizing this behavior, strongly confined Fano type optical resonances in an ultrathin (i.e., approximate to 12 nm) tungsten disulfide (WS2) photonic crystal (PhC) directly fabricated on a TMD-on-glass platform are reported. In this approach, Fano-type WS2 photonic resonances strongly couple to the WS2 excitonic dispersion engender self-resonant exciton-polaritons with an out-of-plane optical confinement exceeding that provided by surface plasmon polaritons in the visible. The large spatial light-matter overlap endowed by this unique monolithic self-coupling scheme is utilized for steering of enhanced 2D WSe2 excitonic photoluminescence in a truly TMD integrated system. It is envisioned that the strong light matter interaction on the TMD-on-glass platform will unfold the prospects of ultrathin exciton-polaritonic resonators.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) radiation excites electronic and optical modes of many materials, and controlling interaction of these materials with THz pulses provides a fascinating avenue to achieve unprecedented functionalities in return. Here, woodpile-structured rare-earth orthoferrite metamaterials built with 3-D direct ink writing technology are proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Polarization-independent THz refraction and switching of resonances by varying the number of layers in the structure, as well as the structural parameters and specimen support angle are achieved. Such all-rare-earth-orthoferrite dielectric metamaterials are easy to fabricate and can be very promising in developing efficient and low cost THz functional metadevices.

Abstract:Polar van der Waals (vdW) crystals that support phonon polaritons have recently attracted much attention because they can confine infrared and terahertz (THz) light to deeply subwavelength dimensions, allowing for the guiding and manipulation of light at the nanoscale. The practical applications of these crystals in devices rely strongly on deterministic engineering of their spatially localized electromagnetic field distributions, which has remained challenging. The polariton interference can be enhanced and tailored by patterning the vdW crystal α‐MoO3 into microstructures that support highly in‐plane anisotropic phonon polaritons. The orientation of the polaritonic in‐plane isofrequency curve relative to the microstructure edges is a critical parameter governing the polariton interference, rendering the configuration of infrared electromagnetic field localizations by enabling the tuning of the microstructure size and shape and the excitation frequency. Thus, the study presents an effective rationale for engineering infrared light flow in planar photonic devices.

Abstract:2D van der Waals (vdW) layered polar crystals sustaining phonon polaritons (PhPs) have opened up new avenues for fundamental research and optoelectronic applications in the mid-infrared to terahertz ranges. To date, 2D vdW crystals with PhPs are only experimentally demonstrated in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) slabs. For optoelectronic and active photonic applications, semiconductors with tunable charges, finite conductivity, and moderate bandgaps are preferred. Here, PhPs are demonstrated with low loss and ultrahigh electromagnetic field confinements in semiconducting vdW alpha-MoO3. The alpha-MoO3 supports strong hyperbolic PhPs in the mid-infrared range, with a damping rate as low as 0.08. The electromagnetic confinements can reach approximate to lambda 0/120, which can be tailored by altering the thicknesses of the alpha-MoO3 2D flakes. Furthermore, spatial control over the PhPs is achieved with a metal-ion-intercalation strategy. The results demonstrate alpha-MoO3 as a new platform for studying hyperbolic PhPs with tunability, which enable switchable mid-infrared nanophotonic devices.
A 2D van der Waals Material for Terahertz Emission with Giant Optical Rectification

Abstract:Exfoliation and stacking of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) crystals have created unprecedented opportunities in the discovery of quantum phases. A major obstacle to the advancement of this field is the limited spectroscopic access due to a mismatch in sample sizes (1 - 10 micrometer) and wavelengths (0.1 - 1 millimeter) of electromagnetic radiation relevant to their low-energy excitations. Here, we introduce a new member of the 2D vdW material family: a terahertz (THz) emitter. We show intense and broadband THz generation from the vdW ferroelectric semiconductor NbOI2 with optical rectification efficiency over one-order-of-magnitude higher than that of the current standard THz emitter, ZnTe. The NbOI2 THz emitter can be easily integrated into vdW heterostructures for on-chip near-field THz spectroscopy of a target vdW material/device. Our approach provides a general spectroscopic tool for the rapidly expanding field of 2D vdW materials and quantum matter.

Self-organized Phase-Transition Lithography for All-Inorganic Photonic Textures.

Abstract:Realizing general processing applicable to various materials by one basic tool has long been considered a distant dream. Fortunately, ultrafast laser–matter interaction has emerged as a highly universal platform with unprecedented optical phenomena and provided implementation paths for advanced manufacturing with novel functionalities. Here, we report the establishment of a three-dimensional (3D) focal-area interference field actively induced by a single ultrafast laser in transparent dielectrics. Relying on this, we demonstrate a radically new approach of self-organized phase-transition lithography (SOPTL) to achieve super-resolution construction of embedded all-inorganic photonic textures with extremely high efficiency. The generated textures exhibit a tunable photonic bandgap (PBG) in a wide range from ~1.3 to ~2 μm. More complicated interlaced textures with adjustable structural features can be fabricated within a few seconds, which is not attainable with any other conventional techniques. Evidence suggests that the SOPTL is extendable to more than one material system. This study augments light–matter interaction physics, offers a promising approach for constructing robust photonic devices, and opens up a new research direction in advanced lithography.
Temperature tunable flexible photo absorbers based on near-infrared 1D photonic crystal hybridized W-doped VO2nanostructures

Abstract:Vanadium dioxide is a potential candidate for energy efficient smart windows and have crystalline phase transition temperature (Tc) at 68 °C. So far, literatures mainly emphasis on different synthetic strategies of tungsten doped VO2which is a most effective dopant to reduceTcof VO2to near room temperatures. Until now, there is no report shows the incorporation of flexible 1D photonic crystals as spectrally selective, temperature tunable device to control the changes in optical transmission modulations of W-VO2nanostrtcures, especially in the near IR region for smart window application. W-doped VO2with various tungsten contents were synthesized with a facile hydrothermal route. We found that, with 1.1 at% of tungsten doping in intrinsic VO2, the metal to insulator transition temperature is brought down to 37 °C from 68 °C. IR transmission of VO2thin film can be reduced from 70% to 40% around room temperature, after doping. Significant absorption enhancement has been observed for both VO2and W-doped VO2films, deposited over tunable SiO2/Ta2O5based distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) fabricated over flexible PET (poly-ethylene terephthalate) substrates. On depositing VO2over ∼70% reflecting DBR, optical transmission is reduced to ∼15% from 35% while the temperature varies to 380 K from 300 K in IR regime. Number of stacks plays a crucial role for effective IR extinctions. A high quality DBR is fabricated by increasing no. of stacks from 4 to 7, with optical transmission of DBR reduced to nearly 5% in stop band. However, with 1.1 at% of W-VO2over such 95% reflecting flexible DBR, optical transmission vanishes nearly, around room temperature itself in the stop bands of that DBR, which clearly indicates the significant absorption enhancement. W-VO2/DBR hybrid can substantially modulate the solar heat flux and also imbuing DBR over flexible PET substrates offers retrofitting of the existing windows for energy economy. Thus these structures have promising potential applications for optical devices and practical design for smart windows.

Abstract:Terahertz devices play an irreplaceable role in the development of terahertz technology. The bad thing is that many natural materials are difficult to respond in terahertz band, so the devices made of them have single function. In order to realize the diversity and tunability of device functions, we designed a terahertz metamaterial device composed of thermally induced phase change material VO2. The device structure is composed of Au bottom layer, SiO2 dielectric layer and VO2 top layer. We use the three-dimensional electromagnetic simulation, and use Bruggeman effective medium theory to clarify the phase transition characteristics of vanadium dioxide, while the Drude model establishes the functional relationship between the conductivity of vanadium dioxide and temperature. The basic principle behind high absorptivity is expounded by using impedance matching theory. Through software simulation, we know that when T=313 K, the device has complete reflection ability in the whole terahertz band. When T=342 K, the average absorption rate is above 95% in the ultra wideband range of 4.71~9.41 THz, and the absorption rate reaches an amazing 0.99999 at 6.31 THz, so the maximum thermal modulation range of the device is 0.001-0.99999, which exceeds the vast majority of current absorbers. By illustrating the electric field intensity distribution on the device surface pre and post the phase transition temperature during the heating process, we substantiate the vanadium dioxide phase transition and elucidate the transformation of device performance. Furthermore, absorptivity diagrams for the device with distinct structures are depicted to further exemplify the impact of each structure on the device's absorption characteristics. We explored the influence of the geometric size of the device on the absorptivity, which provides a certain reference value for practical application. In a word, we have designed a tunable terahertz device with simple structure, high absorption rate, wide absorption bandwidth, which can be used in the fields of energy collection, electromagnetic stealth, modulation and so on.

Abstract:Hyperbolic media have attracted much attention in the photonics community due to their ability to confine light to arbitrarily small volumes and their potential applications to super-resolution technologies. The two-dimensional counterparts of these media can be achieved with hyperbolic metasurfaces that support in-plane hyperbolic guided modes upon nanopatterning, which, however, poses notable fabrication challenges and limits the achievable confinement. We show that thin flakes of a van der Waals crystal, α-MoO3, can support naturally in-plane hyperbolic polariton guided modes at mid-infrared frequencies without the need for patterning. This is possible because α-MoO3 is a biaxial hyperbolic crystal with three different Reststrahlen bands, each corresponding to a different crystalline axis. These findings can pave the way toward a new paradigm to manipulate and confine light in planar photonic devices.

Abstract:We describe a method for the active control of terahertz (THz) waves using vanadium dioxide (VO2)-embedded hybrid metamaterials (MMs). VO2 undergoes an insulator-metal phase transition at around 68 degrees C, causing its conductivity to change by five orders of magnitude. Our MM consists of a periodic array of two metallic structures connected with VO2 pads. Simulations show that this MM can realize mode switching via the VO2 pads with high conductivity in the conduction state and high dynamic conductivity across the phase transition. Such material characterizations have rarely been observed in other materials, such as semiconductors, superconductors, and graphene. More interestingly, this mode switch can be realized experimentally using not only a thermal stimulus, but also electrical and optical stimuli. The phase transition mechanisms are the same for thermal and electrical stimuli, but different for the optical stimulus. This diverse range of stimuli is very useful for manipulating the THz waves in practical applications.

Abstract:The integration of terahertz waves with metamaterials has become a key goal in modern photonics. In this work, we designed grating-structured metamaterials and face-centered-cubic (fcc) metamaterials based on TbFeO3 dielectric ceramics and built these materials using 3D direct writing technology. To simulate the behavior of the designed TbFeO3 metamaterials, the dielectric constant of TbFeO3 dielectric ceramic materials was determined. The desired strong electric and magnetic resonances were excited in the designed TbFeO3 metamaterials. The grating-structured metamaterials showed increased polarization-dependent transmittance as the line spacing decreased, while the fcc metamaterial showed a deep transmission dip at low frequencies and an electromagnetically induced increase in transmittance at higher frequencies. An increase in the electrical resistance contributed to the increase in the transmission properties of the fcc TbFeO3 metamaterial as its temperature decreased, while a reduction in the dielectric constant of TbFeO3 simultaneously caused a blueshift in this metamaterial. When combined with 3D direct writing technology, TbFeO3, with its high dielectric constant and low loss characteristics, represents an inexpensive and promising step towards the production of the next generation of low-cost, easy-to-fabricate, all-dielectric metamaterials.
In-plane hyperbolic polariton tuners in terahertz and long-wave infrared regimes

Abstract:Development of terahertz (THz) and long-wave infrared (LWIR) technologies is mainly bottlenecked by the limited intrinsic response of traditional materials. Hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPhPs) of van der Waals semiconductors couple strongly with THz and LWIR radiation. However, the mismatch of photon-polariton momentum makes far-field excitation of HPhPs challenging. Here, we propose an In-Plane Hyperbolic Polariton Tuner that is based on patterning van der Waals semiconductors, here {\alpha}-MoO3, into ribbon arrays. We demonstrate that such tuners respond directly to far-field excitation and give rise to LWIR and THz resonances with high quality factors up to 300, which are strongly dependent on in-plane hyperbolic polariton of the patterned {\alpha}-MoO3. We further show that with this tuner, intensity regulation of reflected and transmitted electromagnetic waves, as well as their wavelength and polarization selection can be achieved. This is important to development of THz and LWIR miniaturized devices.

Abstract:The interactions between electromagnetic wave and photonic quasicrystals are investigated. A terahertz (THz) source with multifrequency modes in an optical LiTaO3 superlattice produced by quasiperiodic (Fibonacci) domain-inverted ferroelectric material is demonstrated experimentally. Using the canonical pump-probe experimental technique, THz radiations in both forward and backward propagations are in-situ detected simultaneously. Four pronounced THz frequencies at 1.18, 0.78, 0.59 and 0.37 THz in Fourier transform spectrum are observed. The physical properties of THz waves inside quasiperiodic superlattice are discussed. Abstract:Effect of 1-D photonic crystals on optical transmission of VO2 is studied by depositing thin films of VO2 nanoparticles on SiO2/TiO2 distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR) in the near infrared (IR) spectrum as per earlier theoretical predictions of J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. 51 375102 (2018). Monoclinic VO2 nanoparticles with tuned crystallinity were synthesized by a facile solution processing method. Moderately crystalline (MC) and highly crystalline (HC) VO2 nanostructures were obtained by varying its synthesis temperature and post growth annealing conditions. Both MC VO2 and HC VO2 films exhibit expected reduction in optical transmission in the IR region due to its structural phase transition from monoclinic (insulator) to rutile (metallic) around critical temperature of 68 °C. By combining VO2 films on a 40% transmitting DBR structure, the average optical transmission further went down to ~ 20%. Number of stacks of DBR plays a key role in such effective reduction of optical transmission in IR. When the number of stacks of DBR is further increased from 4 to 7, optical transmission of metallic VO2 films on DBR nearly vanishes in NearIR spectrum in such vanadium dioxide/1D photonic crystal based composite photonic structures. Such temperature controlled, enhanced, broad band optical response can be a promising design for VO2 nanoparticle based hybrid photonic absorbers for various smart window applications.
