Abstract:Hydrogen evolution reaction and hydrogen oxidation reaction (HER/HOR) are two key reactions in the electrolysis of water to produce green hydrogen and fuel cells, respectively. However, the slow kinetics of HER/HOR under alkaline conditions and lack of catalysts with good activity and durability limit their development and application. Here, Pd nanoparticles supported by CeO2/C with abundant oxygen vacancies were synthesized for alkaline HER/HOR. The results of physical characterizations and electrochemical measurements indicated that small-size Pd nanoparticles were in full contact with CeO2, and charge transfer occurred at the Pd-CeO2 interface. The rich Pd-CeO2 interface and the interaction between metal and metal oxide carriers greatly improved the electrocatalytic activity of HER and HOR under alkaline conditions. The optimal Pd/CeO2/C exhibited excellent HER/HOR activity with a higher HER exchange current density (1.963 mA cm(-2)) than commercial Pt/C. Furthermore, the HER and HOR mass activity of Pd/CeO2/C reached 33 times and 9.2 times that of Pd/C, respectively. Pd/CeO2/C exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic stability due to the anchoring of Pd via abundant oxygen vacancy defects in CeO2/C. This work provides a meaningful reference for the rational regulation of metal-support interfaces and the application of metal-oxide-support-based electrocatalysts in electrocatalytic reactions.

Abstract:As a promising bifunctional electrocatalyst for water splitting, NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) demonstrates an excellent activity toward OER in alkaline solution. However, its HER activity is challenged owing to the poor electronic conductivity and insufficient electrochemical active sites. Therefore, a 3D self-supporting metal hydroxide/oxide electrode with abundant oxygen vacancies is prepared by electrodepositing CeOx nanoparticles on NiFe LDH nanosheets. According to the DFT calculations and experimental studies, the oxygen vacancies at the NiFe LDH/CeOx interface can be introduced successfully due to the positive charge accumulation resulting from the local electron potential difference between NiFe LDH and CeOx. The oxygen vacancies accelerate the electrons/ions migration rates, facilitate the charge transfer and increase the electrochemical active sites, which giving rise to an efficient activity toward HER in alkaline solution. Futhermore, NF@NiFe LDH/CeOx needs a lower potential of 1.51 V to drive a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in overall water splitting and demonstrates a superior performance compared with the benchmark Pt/C and RuO2, which indicating to be a promising candidate bifunctional electrode catalyst.

Abstract:Developing low-cost, high-efficient electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of critical significance in hydrogen production via alkaline electrolyzer. Herein, we prepared CeO2/Co4N heterostructure for the catalyst in alkaline HER, which introduced synergistic effect within the CeO2 and Co4N catalytic sites that facilitate the two consecutive steps in alkaline HER reaction. More importantly, a plasma treatment was further applied on the material to tune the electronic structure of the catalytic sites by creating multiple anion vacancies. The introduced O vacancies accelerated the H2O cleaving process on CeO2, while N vacancies in Co4N optimized the H adsorption strength on the Co sites. The catalytic activity of the catalyst has been improved significantly after the plasma treatment. It only required an overpotential of 36 mV@10 mA/cm2 for the HER operated in 1 M KOH electrolyte, provided one of the best precious metal-free catalysts ever reported.

Abstract:The strong alkaline electrolytes are utilized in various key electrochemical applications and the severe corrosion by hydroxyl ions endows the development of high‐performance electrode materials with a great challenge. Here, an effective strategy is demonstrated to stabilize α‐Co(OH)2 under harsh alkaline electrochemical condition by coordination polyhedron pinning (MoO42−, WO42−) on the surface for hydrogen evolution reaction. The strong alkaline electrolytes are utilized in various key electrochemical applications and the severe corrosion by hydroxyl ions endows the development of high‐performance electrode materials with a great challenge. Here, an effective strategy is demonstrated to stabilize α‐Co(OH)2 under harsh alkaline electrochemical condition by coordination polyhedron pinning (MoO42−, WO42−) on the surface for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The addition of MoO42− in 1 m KOH can inhibit the attack of hydroxyl ions on oxygen vacancies in α‐Co(OH)2, and simultaneously modulate the electronic structure of active sites for HER. The theoretical calculations and experimental results reveal that MoO42− can be riveted on the surface of α‐Co(OH)2 to greatly stabilize oxygen vacancies and inhibit the formation of soluble ions of Co(OH)3−. The resultant active sites exhibit reduced maximum energy barriers for the optimized alkaline HER. Additionally, MoO42− near the interface between α‐Co(OH)2 and electrolyte can alleviate the accumulation of hydroxyl ions on α‐Co(OH)2 due to the electrostatic repulsion, improving the stability toward HER. This work offers insight into the role of coordination polyhedron ions in regulating and enhancing the stability of α‐Co(OH)2 for various potential electrochemical applications in alkaline electrolyte.

Abstract:Stabilizing oxygen vacancy for oxides-based electrocatalysts is the most challenging to achieve high-efficient overall water splitting in alkaline media. Herein, the oxygen vacancy (O-V) engineered V2O5 nanosheet arrays have been demonstrated as bifunctional electrocatalysts, in which cobalt ions are utilized to tailor O-V content and keep steady. The maxmized O-V engineering can render the valance electrons shift to higher binding energy with moderate surface chemical states, optimizing H* adsorption on vanadium center at the electrochemical interface. Consequently, a superlow overpotential of 51 mV is required to attain a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) for hydrogen evolution with 24 h durable stability. The corresponding overpotential is about 277 mV for oxygen evolution. After assembling a two-electrode electrolyzer, it shows a very low voltage of 1.55 V at 10 mA cm(-2). This work provides a viable cationic induced O-V formation strategy for oxides-based electrocatalysts to obtain satisfied catalytic activity and stability. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:It is crucial to design economically active and stable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER). Herein, we present a novel and efficient Ar plasma-assisted strategy for the construction of octahedral Co-vacancy induced heteroatom Pt-filling and oxygen vacancy enriched dual-deficient Co3O4 spinel nanosheets arrays (D-Pt-Co3O4) to enhance HER performance. The Ar plasma technique can efficiently generate vacancies on the oxide surface. This induces the formation of Pt-filling and oxygen vacancy. Theoretical calculations show that the synergistic effect of filling Pt atoms with oxygen vacancies effectively improves the electronic conductivity and optimizes the energy barriers. Meanwhile, the Pt atoms and Co atoms (mainly octahedral Co sites) act as active sites, contributing to the improved performance. A low overpotential of 27mV is required for the D-Pt-Co3O4 at 10mAcm-2 in alkaline HER, outperforming that of the commercial Pt/C, and the turnover frequency under alkaline conditions is significantly improved. The present method highlights the concept of differential adsorption sites in vacancy-enhanced noble metal atom filling metal oxide catalysts for boosting hydrogen evolution.

Herein, the coupling between oxygen vacancies and interface engineering is highlighted to fabricate a novel amorphous/crystalline CrOx-Ni3N heterostructure grown on Ni foam for accelerating the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the electron transfer from amorphous CrOx to Ni3N at the interfaces, and the optimized Gibbs free energies of H2O dissociation (Delta G(H-OH)) and H adsorption (Delta G(H)) in the amorphous/crystalline CrOx-Ni3N heterostructure are conducive to the superior and stable HER activity. Experimental data confirm that numerous oxygen vacancies and amorphous/crystalline interfaces in the CrOx-Ni3N catalysts are favorable for abundant accessible active sites and enhanced intrinsic activity, resulting in excellent catalytic performances for HER and OER. Additionally, the in situ reconstruction of CrOx-Ni3N into highly active Ni3N/Ni(OH)(2) is responsible for the optimized OER performance in a long-term stability test. Eventually, an alkaline electrolyzer using CrOx-Ni3N as both cathode and anode has a low cell voltage of 1.53 V at 10 mA cm(-2), together with extraordinary durability for 500 h, revealing its potential in industrial applications.

Abstract:Developing highly-active, earth-abundant non-precious-metal catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction(HER) in alkaline solution would be beneficial to sustainable energy storage. Perovskite oxides are generally regarded as low-active HER catalysts, due to their inapposite hydrogen adsorption and water dissociation. Here, we report a detailed study on perovskite LaCoO 3 epitaxial thin films as a model catalyst to significantly enhance the HER performance via an electrochemical activation process. As a result, the overpotential for the activation films to achieve a current density of 0.36 m A/cm 2 is 238 m V, reduced by more than 200 m V in comparison with that of original samples. Structural characterization revealed the activation process dramatically increases the concentration of oxygen vacancies(Vo) on the surface of LaCoO 3 . We established the relationship between the electronic structure induced by VOand the enhanced HER activity. Further theoretical calculations revealed that the VOoptimizes the hydrogen adsorption and dissociation of water on the surface of LaCoO 3 thin films, thus improving the HER catalytic activity. This work may promote a deepened understanding of perovskite oxides for HER mechanism by Vo adjusting and a new avenue for designing highly active electrochemical catalysts in alkaline solution.

Abstract:Developing highly efficient OER catalysts is essential for producing hydrogen from water electrolysis to compensate for conventional fossil fuel shortages. Here, the oxygen-vacancy-rich heterostructure grown on the Ni foam (NF) (Co3O4@Fe-B-O/NF) is fabricated. The synergistic effect between Co3O4 and Fe-B-O has been proven effectively modulate the electronic structure and produce highly active interface sites, ultimately leading to enhanced electrocatalytic activity. Co3O4@Fe-B-O/NFrequiresan overpotential of 237 mV to drive 20 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH, and 384 mV to drive 10 mA cm-2 in 0.1 M PBS, superior to most catalysts currently used. Moreover, Co3O4@Fe-B-O/NF as an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrode shows great potential in overall water splitting and CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). This work may provide effective ideas for designing efficient oxide catalysts.

Abstract:Oxygen vacancies (Ov) engineering has demonstrated tremendous power to expedite electrocatalytic kinetics for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The mechanism is elusive, and most of them were attributed to the decoration or creation of active sites. Here, we report the critical role of superficial Ov in enhancing the electronic transport, thereby unfolding the catalytic potential of NiFe-layered double hydroxides for OER. We reveal that the superficial Ov engineering barely regulates the intrinsic catalytic activities but lowers the charge transport resistances by more than one order of magnitude. Loading-dependent electrochemical analysis suggests that the superficial Ov engineering intensively modulates the utilization rate of electronically accessible active sites for OER catalysis. By correlating catalytic activities to charging capacitances of C Φ (related to the absorption of reaction intermediates), we unveil a linear dependence, which indicates switchable catalysis on electronically accessible active sites. Based on the unified experimental and theoretical analysis of the electronic structures, we propose that the superficial Ov imposes electron donation to the conductive band of NiFeOOH, thereby enabling the regulation of electronic transport to switch on/off OER catalysis. The switch effect holds fundamental and technical implications for understanding and designing efficient electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The octahedral sites in Co3O4 usually possess better oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity, which have been identified as the active sites. Atomic cationic vacancy defects can elicit localized electron redistribution to regulate the electronic structure of the host materials. In this paper, Co3O4 nanosheet arrays with cationic vacancies at octahedral sites (V x -Co3O4) have been synthesized by a facile three-step reaction process. Density functional theory (DFT) computational results further indicate that the cationic vacancies can increase the number of electrons per Co atom and optimize the adsorption energy of the intermediate product. As a result, the optimized V0.3-Co3O4/CC electrode with abundant cationic vacancies displays excellent OER performance in alkaline electrolytes with an overpotential of 240 mV at 10 mA cm–2, Tafel slope of 72.2 mV dec–1, and superior stability, which are much better than those of the pure Co3O4 and commercial IrO2.

Abstract:Highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction are of technological importance in energy conversion and storage. Surface modification is one of the most promising strategies for improving the activity of such electrocatalysts. Herein, we report the multilayer hollow MnCo2O4 microsphere enriched with oxygen vacancies induced by the plasma-engraving technique for the first time. The defective MnCo2O4 microsphere exhibits an excellent catalytic activity and durability as compared to pristine MnCo2O4. Our electrochemical analysis, combined with first-principles calculations, reveals that the improved electrocatalytic performance is attributed mainly to abundant active sites after the plasma treatment and the effects of the introduced oxygen vacancies. The oxygen vacancy not only reduces the density of states near the Fermi level but also lowers the Co d-band center, weakening the adsorption of the intermediates. This facilitates the desorption of the adsorbates, which is necessary for oxygen evolution reaction.

Abstract:Oxygen vacancy (OVac) and interface engineering are effective tactics for regulating the electronic structure of electrocatalysts and optimizing the absorption/desorption of reactants and intermediates on the catalyst surface to enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, a self-supported electrocatalyst, comprising delta-MnO2 nanosheets grown on Co single atoms (CoSAs) anchored on N-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) embedded with Co nanoparticle on a carbon cloth (CC) (delta-MnO2/Co-NP@Co-SAs-NCNTs/CC), was fabricated. Through insitu growth of delta-MnO2 nanosheets on Co-NP@Co-SAs-NCNTs/CC, the number of OVac is increased, as proved by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and Positron annihilation lifetime spectrometer (PALS), due to the redox between MnO2 and Co. Experimental results and theoretical calculations confirm that the formation of OVac rich delta-MnO2 nanosheets and the construction of heterogeneous interface between delta-MnO2 and Co-SAs-NCNTs endow the electrocatalyst with good conductivity, fast charge transfer, and multiple active sites, leading to rapid OER kinetics. Therefore, the delta-MnO2/Co-NP@Co-SAs-NCNTs/CC electrocatalyst demonstrates remarkable OER performance, requiring only 165 mV overpotential to reach a current density of 10 mA/cm(2) in an alkaline solution. Abstract:Efficient electrocatalyst materials for several applications, including energy storage and conversion, have become vital for achieving technological progress. The concentration of the oxygen vacancies was well controlled by changing the degree of vacuum during the heat treatment and was characterized by XPS and EPR. The existence of the porous structure arising from the cobalt oxide particles embedded in the carbon matrix provided an efficient charge and gas transmission path, significantly improving the performance of electrocatalytic oxygen evolution. Sufficient reactive sites were provided from both the oxygen vacancies and the heterogeneous interface. The mechanism of enhanced OER originating from the built-in electric field derived from oxygen vacancies was investigated. Consequently, the CoO@Co3O4/C composites offered an OER overpotential of 287 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) with good stability in 1 mol L-1 KOH. In addition, combined with surface photovoltage (SPV), transient photovoltage (TPV), DFT, and in situ Raman spectroscopy, the effect of oxygen defects on the electron migration ability and transformation of the intermediate products were investigated to further understand the nature of catalytic activity in OER.
Unraveling the Influence of Oxygen Vacancy Concentration on Electrocatalytic CO 2 Reduction to Formate over Indium Oxide Catalysts

Abstract:Rational engineering of oxygen vacancies in a metal oxide-based catalyst represents an effective strategy to regulate catalytic performances by influencing both their electrochemical active surface areas and the microelectronic structure. However, the precise control and modulation of the concentration and uniformity of oxygen vacancies on the catalyst surface still remains inadequately explored and poorly elucidated. Herein, we develop a facile and effective method to prepare a series of In2O3 nanorods with varying oxygen vacancy concentrations for efficient electrolytic CO2 reduction to formate. Experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that the abundant oxygen vacancies in the In2O3 catalyst significantly improve CO2 activation and promote the production of *HCOO intermediates, achieving a maximum formate Faradaic efficiency of 91.2% at −1.27 V vs a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) with high partial current density and, meanwhile, superior stability. The underlying relationship between the oxygen vacancy concentration and CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) performance was further established. This work offers a feasible strategy to finely tune the oxygen vacancy concentration in p-block metal oxide-based catalysts for highly efficient electrolytic CO2RR.

Abstract:Oxygen vacancies can help to capture oxygen-containing species and act as active centers for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Unfortunately, effective methods for generating a high amount of oxygen vacancies on the surface of various nanocatalysts are rather limited. Here, we described an effective way to generate oxygen-vacancy-rich surface of transition metal oxides, exemplified with Co3 O4 , simply by constructing highly coupled interface of ultrafine Co3 O4 nanocrystals and metallic Ti. Impressively, the amounts of oxygen vacancy on the surface of Co3 O4 /Ti surpassed the reported values of the Co3 O4 modified even under highly critical conditions. The Co3 O4 /Ti electrode could provide a current density of 23 mA cm-2 at an OER overpotential of 570 mV, low Tafel slope, and excellent durability in neutral medium. Because of the formation of a large amount of oxygen vacancies as the active centers for OER on the surface, the TOF value of the Co3 O4 @Ti electrode was optimized to be 3238 h-1 at an OER overpotential of 570 mV, which is 380 times that of the state-of-the-art non-noble nanocatalysts in the literature.

Abstract:Developing highly-active, earth-abundant non-precious-metal catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline solution would be beneficial to sustainable energy storage. Perovskite oxides are generally regarded as low-active HER catalysts, due to their inapposite hydrogen adsorption and water dissociation. Here, we report a detailed study on perovskite LaCoO3 epitaxial thin films as a model catalyst to significantly enhance the HER performance via an electrochemical activation process. As a result, the overpotential for the activation films to achieve a current density of 0.36 mA/cm2 is 238 mV, reduced by more than 200 mV in comparison with that of original samples. Structural characterization revealed the activation process dramatically increases the concentration of oxygen vacancies (Vo) on the surface of LaCoO3. We established the relationship between the electronic structure induced by VO and the enhanced HER activity. Further theoretical calculations revealed that the VO optimizes the hydrogen adsorption and dissociation of water on the surface of LaCoO3 thin films, thus improving the HER catalytic activity. This work may promote a deepened understanding of perovskite oxides for HER mechanism by Vo adjusting and a new avenue for designing highly active electrochemical catalysts in alkaline solution.

Conversion of Catalytically Inert 2D Bismuth Oxide Nanosheets for Effective Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Catalysis via Oxygen Vacancy Concentration Modulation

Abstract:Abstract Oxygen vacancies ( V o ) in electrocatalysts are closely correlated with the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. The role of vacancy defects and the effect of their concentration, however, yet remains unclear. Herein, Bi 2 O 3 , an unfavorable electrocatalyst for the HER due to a less than ideal hydrogen adsorption Gibbs free energy (Δ G H* ), is utilized as a perfect model to explore the function of V o on HER performance. Through a facile plasma irradiation strategy, Bi 2 O 3 nanosheets with different V o concentrations are fabricated to evaluate the influence of defects on the HER process. Unexpectedly, while the generated oxygen vacancies contribute to the enhanced HER performance, higher V o concentrations beyond a saturation value result in a significant drop in HER activity. By tunning the V o concentration in the Bi 2 O 3 nanosheets via adjusting the treatment time, the Bi 2 O 3 catalyst with an optimized oxygen vacancy concentration and detectable charge carrier concentration of 1.52 × 10 24 cm −3 demonstrates enhanced HER performance with an overpotential of 174.2 mV to reach 10 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 80 mV dec −1 , and an exchange current density of 316 mA cm −2 in an alkaline solution, which approaches the top-tier activity among Bi-based HER electrocatalysts. Density-functional theory calculations confirm the preferred adsorption of H* onto Bi 2 O 3 as a function of oxygen chemical potential (∆ μ O ) and oxygen partial potential ( P O2 ) and reveal that high V o concentrations result in excessive stability of adsorbed hydrogen and hence the inferior HER activity. This study reveals the oxygen vacancy concentration-HER catalytic activity relationship and provides insights into activating catalytically inert materials into highly efficient electrocatalysts.
