Abstract:Although applications of the integrated ultrafiltration (UF) membrane have been investigated for years, most studies have been conducted at the lab scale. Here, a case study on the integrated Fe-based floc-UF process was presented. To enhance membrane performance, both pre-filtration (bag filter) and pre-oxidation were used as pretreatments to remove particles and inhibit the development of microorganisms. Results showed that the integrated process operated stably with pre-treatments, and the UF membrane fouling behavior could be divided into three different phases: slow increase rate (phase I), medium increase rate (phase II), and fast increase rate (phase III). In comparison to those in phases II and III, both natural organic matters and colloids were the main membrane fouling mechanisms during phase I, as the pollutants were not successfully removed by flocs initially. With the continuous injection of flocs, a loose cake layer became the main fouling mechanism during phase II, resulting in the deterioration of membrane fouling. During phase III, however, microorganisms (e.g., Proteobacteria) were inevitably nourished within the cake layer and played an important role in aggravating the degree of membrane fouling. During this integrated membrane-based process, several operating factors, including floc concentration, sludge discharge frequency, and the aeration rate during backwashing, played important roles in determining membrane performance. In addition, except for oxygen consumption, all the effluent quality parameters met the drinking water criteria followed in China (GB5749-2006).

Abstract:Integrated ultrafiltration (UF) membranes are a promising technology in water treatment. However, commonly used granular adsorbents are only injected into the membrane tank once, which not only results in serious membrane surface damage, but also severe membrane fouling due to the low utilization efficiency of adsorbents over time. To overcome these disadvantages, loose Fe-based flocs, which display better sludge discharge than Al-based flocs, were investigated to improve integrated UF membrane performance under different injection frequencies with humic acid (HA) and reservoir water. Results showed that multiple dynamic floc layers were formed with batch injections and a critical injection frequency existed. When the injection frequency was too low, membrane fouling was induced by the formation of a dense HA cake layer on the floc surface. In contrast, it was alleviated when the HA molecules entering the membrane tank did not exceed the adsorption ability of the flocs injected each time. HA removal efficiency also increased with increasing injection frequency due to the improvement of floc utilization efficiency. With changing floc characteristics, better membrane performance was induced, especially under acidic conditions, which was ascribed to the higher positive surface charge and specific surface area of flocs. Raw water experiments further confirmed the excellent membrane performance based on high pollutant removal efficiency and minor membrane fouling. According to the outstanding membrane performance, this novel integrated floc-membrane process has great application potential in water treatment.

Abstract:Oil field polluted water was treated by using polysulphone ultrafiltration memebrane.The effects of different detergents and cleaning methods were studied.The results show that using surfactant and isoamyl alcohol as detergent and simultaneous cleaning of negative pressure and back wash is a better method in which the membrane flux renewal reaches over 90%.

Abstract:The integration of adsorbents with ultrafiltration (UF) membranes is a promising method for alleviating membrane fouling and reducing land use. However, adsorbents typically are only injected into the membrane tank once, resulting in a single dynamic protection layer and low removal efficiency over long-term operation. In addition, the granular adsorbents used can cause membrane surface damage. To overcome these disadvantages, we injected inexpensive and loose aluminum (Al)-based flocs directly into a membrane tank with bottom aeration in the presence of humic acid (HA) or raw water taken from the Miyun Reservoir (Beijing, China). Results showed that the flocs were well suspended in the membrane tank, and multiple dynamic floc protection layers were formed (sandwich-like) on the membrane surface with multiple batch injections. Higher frequency floc injections resulted in better floc utilization efficiency and less severe membrane fouling. With continuous injection, acid solutions demonstrated better performance in removing HA molecules, especially those with small molecular weight, and in alleviating membrane fouling compared with the use of high aeration rate or polyacrylamide injection. This was attributed to the small particle size, large specific surface area, and high zeta potential of the flocs. Additionally, excellent UF membrane performance was exhibited by reservoir water with continuous injection and acid solution. Based on the outstanding UF membrane performance, this innovative integrated filtration with loose Al-based flocs has great application potential for water treatment.
Improved Ultrafiltration Performance Through Dielectric Barrier Discharge/sulfite Pretreatment: Effects of Water Matrices and Mechanistic Insights

Abstract:The feasibility of utilizing a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD)/sulfite-ultrafiltration system was investigated in various real water bodies, aiming to clarify the mechanism behind alleviating membrane fouling while synchronously degrading perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) during the treatment process of Yangtze River water. The results demonstrated that the DBD/sulfite pretreatment exhibited remarkable rates of membrane flux mitigation (>84.10 %) and efficient degradation rates of PFOA (>85.13 %), which decreased with increasing pH from 3.0 to 11.0. The presence of anions, cations, and natural organic matter slightly hindered the membrane fouling mitigation and PFOA degradation by quenching free radicals; however, the addition of SO42- had a negligible impact. The mitigation of membrane fouling was attributed to the significant involvement of various radicals, including hydroxyl radical (•OH), sulfate radical (SO4•-), electron (e-/eaq-), su-peroxide anion radicals (•O2-), and other radicals such as SO3•-, exhibiting respective contributions of 33.25 %, 28.49 %, 20.56 %, 11.32 %, and 6.39 % in a synergistic redox effect. The pretreatment effectively reduced standard blocking and cake filtration fouling mechanisms by creating a sparse fouling layer on the membrane surface while increasing its roughness. Additionally, the main active species that played a significant role in the degradation of PFOA were identified as SO4•-, •OH, and eaq-. These species contributed approximately 43.63 %, 24.39 %, and 20.65 % respectively to the degradation process. By employing mass spectrometry and density functional theory, a proposed pathway for PFOA degradation was established, effectively reducing the toxicity associated with its degradation byproducts. This study provides innovative insights into membrane-based water treatment technologies that effectively tackle both membrane fouling mitigation and PFOA degradation.

Abstract:Removal effects of DOC and A_(254) are investigated with pretreatment processes of sand filtration, fibrous filtration,coagulation-sand filtration and coagulation-fibrous filtration combined with ultrafiltration, compared with direct ultrafiltration under pilot scale.Influence of organic matter removal of ultrafiltration is probed by various pretreatment processes.Results show that effects of organic matter removal can be enhanced by the pretreatment processes.A_(254) removal rate of ultrafiltration outlet is raised 16,7,23 and 14 percentage points and DOC removal rate of ultrafiltration outlet is raised 17,14,27 and 19 percentage points,with pre- treatment of sand filtration,fibrous filtration,coagulation-sand filtration and coagulation-fibrous filtration, compared with direct ultrafiltration.The organic matter removal effect and stabilization of coagulation-sand filtration process is better than other process.It is highly effective to improve membrane treatment efficiency and membrane contamination protection apply DOC and A_(254) indexes of treated water by ultrafiltration are improved clearly.The best effect is achieved by coagulation-sand filtration process.The coagulation process is showed remarkable contribution to DOC and A_(254) removal.

Abstract:The organic fouling characteristics of hollow fiber ultrafiltration (HFUF) and multibore ultrafiltration (MBUF) membranes from long-term ultrafiltration (UF) membrane systems were systemically investigated in this study. The objective was to obtain insights into the fouling behavior of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in a pilot-scale ultra-high-recovery membrane filtration system (p-UHMS) used for surface water treatment. The pilot system consisted of a series of two different UF membranes (1st stage: polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) HFUF and 2nd stage: polyethersulfone (PES) MBUF). It was designed to feed the HFUF concentrate to the MBUF membranes to achieve ≥99.5 % total water recovery for surface water treatment, as these advances might enhance the production efficiencies of drinking water. The experimental results confirmed that hydrophobic DOM controlled the formation of HFUF membrane organic fouling, whereas hydrophilic DOM, including polysaccharide-like and protein-like matter, promoted MBUF membrane fouling. These opposing trends were attributed to the hydrophilic characteristics of the MBUF membrane surfaces (contact angle: PVDF = 90-130° and PES ≤ 80°), which reduced the hydrophobic interactions between the UF membrane surfaces and foulants. The performance declines of the MBUF membrane due to fouling layer formation was considerably severer than those of the HFUF membrane, decreasing total permeate water in the p-UHMS. Moreover, the quantity of the desorbed MBUF membrane foulants via 0.1 N NaOH was roughly 7.2 times larger than that of the desorbed HFUF membrane foulants through 0.1 N NaOH, indicating that alkaline-based cleaning agent could much more efficiently recover the performance of the fouled MBUF membranes. Hence, adequate cleaning strategies using alkaline-based agent for the MBUF membrane appeared to be essential for preventing the performance deterioration of the p-UHMS.
Protein-folding-inspired approach for UF fouling mitigation using elevated membrane cleaning temperature and residual hydrophobic-modified flocculant after flocculation-sedimentation pre-treatment

Abstract:Hydrophobic-modified flocculants have demonstrated considerable promise in the removal of emerging contaminants by flocculation. However, there is a lack of information about the impacts of dosing such flocculants on the performance of subsequent treatment unit(s) in the overall water treatment process. In this work, inspired by the ubiquitous protein folding phenomenon, an innovative approach using an elevated membrane cleaning temperature as the means to induce residual hydrophobic-modified chitosan flocculant (TRC), after flocculation-sedimentation, to reduce membrane fouling in a subsequent ultrafiltration was proposed; this was evaluated in a continuous flocculation-sedimentation-ultrafiltration (FSUF) process treating samples of the Yangtze River. The hydrophobic chains of TRC had similar temperature-dependent hydrophobicity to those of natural proteins. In the 40-day operation of the FSUF system with combined dosing of alum and TRC, a moderately elevated cleaning water temperature (45 °C) of both backwash with air-bubbling and soaking with sponge-scrubbing cleaning, significantly reduced reversible and irreversible fouling resistance by 49.8%∼61.3% and 73.9%∼83.3%, respectively, compared to the system using cleaning water at 25 °C. Material flow analysis, statistical analysis, instrumental characterizations, and computational simulations, showed that the enhanced fouling mitigation originated from three factors: the reduced contaminant accumulation onto membranes, the strengthened membrane-surface-modification role of TRC, and the weakened structure of the fouling material containing TRC, at the elevated cleaning temperature. Other measures of the performance, these being water purification, membrane stability and economic aspects, also confirmed the potential and feasibility of the proposed approach. This work has provided new insights into the role of hydrophobic-modified flocculants in membrane fouling control, in addition to emerging contaminant removal, in a FSUF surface water treatment process.
Pilot Study of Coagulation/immersed Ultrafiltration Treatment of Micro-Polluted Surface Water

Abstract:The influences of the trans-membrane pressure across the coagulation/immersed ultrafiltration on the treatment of micro-polluted surface water and the removal abilities of polluted matter by this process were investigated in a pilot program.The laboratory scale device kept the filtration flux constant while the influences of the membrane fouling were analyzed as a function of the coagulant dosage,coagulation reaction time and aeration intensity.The effect of in-line chemical cleaning of the membrane for low concentrations of NaOH was also analyzed.The experiments also studied the pollutant removal ability of the coagulation/ultrafiltration.The results showed that the coagulation reaction time had little effect,and the increments of trans-membrane pressure were similar for the hydraulic retention times in the coagulation tank of 0 min and 10 min.The effect of the coagulant dosage is quite significant with the dosage of 4 mg/L(Al3+) the best dosage for reducing the membrane fouling.With an aeration intensities of less than 20 m3/m2·h,higher aeration intensities improves removal of the membrane fouling.The CODMn removal efficiency was 47% and the UV254 by this process was 54%.The effluent turbidity was kept below 0.1 NTU.
Optimization of coupling filtration and rinsing processes by Pontryagin maximum principle

Abstract:This study presented an optimized control strategy for ultrafiltration (UF) membranes fouled with extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) using the Pontryagin Maximum Principle (PMP). A kinetic model based on cake mass balance was first developed to predict the membrane flux in the coupling filtration and rinsing processes. Next, the variation of the irreversible resistance and the model parameters in each cycle were evaluated. Then, the duration and interval of the coupling process were optimized by applying the PMP in terms of net water yield and energy consumption for different scenarios (different optimal strategies, high-frequency short-term rinsing, and low-frequency long-term rinsing). The results showed that the proposed model can accurately capture the dynamic variation of the membrane flux in the coupling filtration and rinsing processes. Meanwhile, the irreversible resistance increased with the cycle number in the form of a power exponent ( Rirr,N=Rirr,N=1NkR ) for the EPS model solution. After optimization by PMP under the fixed filtration duration ( t f = 30 min), the net water yield and energy efficiency respectively improved by over 160 % and 71–104 % compared to that obtained by conventional methods. This work provided a framework for extending lab-scale optimization to real-world applications, offering avenues for further research in industrial-scale UF system optimization.

Enhanced Alleviation of Ultrafiltration Membrane Fouling by Regulating Cake Layer Thickness with Pre-Coagulation During Drinking Water Treatment

Abstract:Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane modules are static in membrane tanks; thus, result in the continuous development of a cake layer and serious membrane fouling. Thickness regulation is the most convenient method to solve this owing to the looseness induced by flocs. Recently, integrated membrane technology is increasingly being applied due to its high pollutant removal efficiency and low space requirements. Herein, with the injection of Fe-based flocs, the UF membrane performance was investigated with module rotation in the presence of humic acid (HA) and south-to-north water in China. The obtained results showed that the outer cake layer was easily shed away owing to the strong flow shear force. The thickness of the cake layer decreased and membrane fouling was significantly alleviated. The faster the rotation speed, the thinner the cake layer and the lower the membrane fouling was. However, the reduction rate of the cake layer thickness decreased as the rotation speed increased owing to the high density of the inner cake layer. Although both the rotation speed and rotation time played an important role in reducing the membrane fouling, the removal efficiency of HA remained constant, and the cake layer tended to be the main fouling mechanism; thus, indicating that module rotation is beneficial to the integrated technology. Owing to the smaller particle size and higher positive charge of flocs formed under an acidic condition, more negatively charged HA molecules were adsorbed, and the UF membrane performance was superior to that in an alkaline condition. Raw water experiments further confirmed the excellent UF membrane performance. Based on this, the proposed technology has great potential for wide applications in rural areas, particularly with the rapid development of clean energy (e.g., solar energy) and intelligent water services.
Reduction of Ultrafiltration Membrane Fouling by the Pretreatment Removal of Emerging Pollutants: A Review

Abstract:Ultrafiltration (UF) processes exhibit high removal efficiencies for suspended solids and organic macromolecules, while UF membrane fouling is the biggest obstacle affecting the wide application of UF technology. To solve this problem, various pretreatment measures, including coagulation, adsorption, and advanced oxidation, for application prior to UF processes have been proposed and applied in actual water treatment processes. Previously, researchers mainly focused on the contribution of natural macromolecular pollutants to UF membrane fouling, while the mechanisms of the influence of emerging pollutants (EPs) in UF processes (such as antibiotics, microplastics, antibiotic resistance genes, etc.) on membrane fouling still need to be determined. This review introduces the removal efficiency and separation mechanism for EPs for pretreatments combined with UF membrane separation technology and evaluates the degree of membrane fouling based on the UF membrane's materials/pores and the structural characteristics of the cake layer. This paper shows that the current membrane separation process should be actively developed with the aim of overcoming specific problems in order to meet the technical requirements for the efficient separation of EPs.

Biopolymer fouling in dead-end ultrafiltration of treated domestic wastewater

Abstract:Ultrafiltration (UF) is considered as a suitable treatment process after conventional wastewater treatment to produce reuse water. Nevertheless, fouling affects the performance of UF to a large extent. As biopolymers (mostly macro polysaccharide-like and protein-like molecules) have been identified as major foulants affecting the filterability of water in dead-end UF, the present study focuses on investigating the reversibility of biopolymer fouling occurring at different biopolymer mass loads to the membrane and under different compression conditions. UF-membrane stirred cell tests using five cycles show that filtering treated domestic wastewater leads to a significant permeability reduction due to the accumulation of biopolymers on the membrane surface and/or in the membrane pores. Although they can be removed by hydraulic backwashing, an increased mass load of biopolymers reduces the removal efficiency. This correlation was verified using a UF pilot plant filtering treated wastewater (secondary effluent or slow sand filtrate). The effect of biopolymer fouling layer deformation on its reversibility was studied using multi-cycle membrane filtration tests under different filtration pressures. The results showed that higher filtration pressures result in more compact biopolymer fouling which is more difficult to be hydraulically backwashed. This phenomenon was also confirmed by pilot-scale UF experiments.

Abstract:Turbidity-causing particles and natural organic matter (NOM) in surface water are two major contributors to membrane fouling. This study focused on the effects of particles, NOM and particles-NOM contaminated raw water on membrane fouling in ultrafiltration (UF) and coagulation-UF process, respectively. The kaolinite solution and humic acid (HA) solution was used to simulate the particles and NOM contaminated raw water respectively in the laboratory experiments. It was found that pollutant constituents and concentration of raw water and pre-treatment process had an influence on membrane fouling. There was a linear relationship between the total organic carbon (TOC) concentration of raw water and that of effluent in UF when HA-contaminated raw water was tested. The transmembrane pressure increase rate was in exponential relationship with raw water TOC. HA mainly contributed to the irreversible fouling, while kaolinite mainly brought the reversible fouling. It was verified that coagulation pre-treatment could postpone membrane fouling development in the limited range of coagulant dosage. Additionally, it was also found that combined fouling effects of particles and NOM were not the simple addition of the individual's effect.
A comparison of micro-flocculation and ozonation as pretreatments for ultrafiltration: organic removal and membrane fouling

Abstract:Micro-flocculation and ozone were applied as pretreatments of ultrafiltration to treat sodium alginate (SA) and humic acid (HA) simulated water, respectively, to investigate the effects of different pretreatments of ultrafiltration (UF) on filtration flux and removal of organic matters. Regarding the SA simulated water, micro-flocculation helped to improve the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal efficiency highly, maximum DOC removal efficiency reached to 79.77%, due to the rejection of gel layer introduced by the alginate-aluminum complexes, but the gel layer had a negative impact on membrane flux. Compared with micro-flocculation, ozone as pretreatments had better ability to enhance the membrane specific flux, the maximum final specific flux remained as 0.786, larger than that of MF-UF process (0.574). Ozonation oxidizing SA into small organic molecules significantly reduced membrane fouling and filtration resistance, but also produced some dissolved organic matters hindering DOC removal of effluent. As for HA simulated water, both the micro-flocculation and ozone could effectively improve the specific flux, the final specific flux of MF-UF and ozone-UF were about 0.930, but MF-UF exhibited better DOC removal than ozone-UF, which avoided the introduction of additional dissolved organic matters.
Analysis and optimization of operating conditions on ultrafiltration of landfill leachate using a response surface methodological approach

Abstract:The term “leachate” or “landfill juice” refers to the water that has percolated through the waste and has become highly polluted. The pollution indicators total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand and salinity of this effluent far exceed the discharge standards. In addition, the increasing requirements of the standards and the stabilization of leachates over time, new techniques have emerged to remedy this problem. Among the technologies used, we find reverse osmosis which has developed in many European countries. In Morocco, at the Oum Azza plant, leachates are treated by reverse osmosis because of their very high salinity. To avoid repeated fouling of the membranes, the pre-treatment must be efficient to meet the requirements of this process. This paper discusses the efficiency of ultrafiltration (UF) as a pretreatment of reverse osmosis in leachate treatment using three ceramic membranes. The response surface method (RS which is an analytical tool and an efficient approach to build predictive models and optimize the UF process was used. Influence of transmembrane pressure (TMP) and circulation velocity (CV) on the performance of three ceramic UF membranes of different pore sizes (UF20, UF50, UF100) for landfill leachate (LFL) treatment is studied. The response surface methodology based central composite design is applied to optimize the operational variables: TMP and CV. Quadratic models developed for the three responses permeate flux, COD and TSS indicate that rejection of COD and TSS obtained are respectively 85%, 66.8% for UF20, 76% and 62.6% for UF50 and finally 70.6% and 50.5% for UF100. Analysis of variance is used to study the variables and the interaction between them. A coefficient of determination found (R 2 > 0.8) for all three membranes shows a good correlation between experimental and predicted response values. In addition, response surface plots are drawn for spatial presentation with the regression equations. These results provide a new information on the effects of porosity and operating parameters on the performance of UFs membranes.

Membrane Fouling in Ultrafiltration of Natural Water after Pretreatment to Different Extents

Abstract:The combined fouling during ultrafiltration (UF) of surface water pretreated to different extents was investigated to disclose the roles of polysaccharides, proteins, and inorganic particles in UF membrane fouling. Both reversible and irreversible fouling decreased with enhanced pretreatment (biologically active carbon (BAC) treatment and sand filtration). The sand filter effluent fouled the membrane very slowly. The UF membrane removed turbidity to less than 0.1 nephelometric turbidity unit (NTU), reduced polysaccharides by 25.4%–29.9%, but rejected few proteins. Both polysaccharides and inorganic particles were detected on the fouled membranes, but inorganic particles could be effectively removed by backwashing. The increase of turbidity in the sand filter effluent to 3.05 NTU did not significantly increase the fouling rate, but an increase in the turbidity in the BAC effluent to 6.11 NTU increased the fouling rate by more than 100%. The results demonstrated that the polysaccharide, not the protein, constituents of biopolymers were responsible for membrane fouling. Membrane fouling was closely associated with a small fraction of polysaccharides in the feed water. Inorganic particles exacerbated membrane fouling only when the concentration of fouling–inducing polysaccharides in the feed water was relatively high. The combined fouling was largely reversible, and polysaccharides were the predominant substances responsible for irreversible fouling.

Abstract:The operational issues of low-pressure ultrafiltration (UF) membrane are associated with its long-term membrane fouling caused by organic and inorganic matters, especially in treating shale gas wastewater (SGW) with complex water compositions. Herein, the effect of ferrate (Fe(VI)) pretreatment on UF membrane fouling and water quality in treating SGW was systematically investigated. Fe(VI) pretreatment significantly mitigated membrane fouling and slightly improved the effluent quality. The hydraulically irreversible fouling index and the total fouling index decreased by 69%–87% and 58%–84%, respectively. The mechanism of membrane fouling mitigation was comprehensively analyzed by the classical pore blocking model, correlation analysis between membrane fouling index and water quality, and the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory. The synergistic mechanisms of membrane fouling mitigation were as follows: (i) Macromolecular organic matters (high molecular weight humics and biopolymers) which would block the membrane pores were oxidized into low fractions organics and removed by Fe(VI); (ii) Fe(VI) pretreatment improved interaction free energy of cohesion of foulants-foulants making foulants more hydrophilic and stable, and increased interaction free energy of adhesion of membrane-foulants making it more difficult for foulants to deposit on the membrane surface. Fe(VI) pretreatment had huge potential in alleviating membrane fouling in treating SGW and other complex wastewater.

This review summarises the known facts about the fouling processes and cleaning procedures and details of the most successful physical and chemical cleaning combinations. The optimum cleaning is closely linked to the nature of the fouling. Precise knowledge of both the fouling type (organic, inorganic, or biological) and the fouling mechanism (gel formation, adsorption, deposition, pore blockage, or cake formation) is the key to success in UF membrane cleaning.
