Abstract:Carbon-based perovskite solar cells (C-PSCs) have been extensively researched as alternatives to fabricate cost-effective energy conversion devices. The interface of the perovskite film and the carbon electrode is crucial for achieving good photovoltaic performance. Herein, two carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with different functional groups designated as A-CQDs and CA-CQDs are used to passivate the perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 surface, respectively. The surface ligand effect arising from the two CQDs is extensively investigated. The introduction of the A-CQDs passivation layer not only forms large crystal grains and decreases the defect density of the perovskite film but also well adjusts the energy level matching of the perovskite film and the carbon electrode, thereby promoting efficient carrier transfer. The C-PSC passivated by the A-CQDs film shows an improved photovoltaic property with a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.97%. PCEs of the control PSCs and PSCs based on the CA-CQDs layer are 11.29% and 10.77%, respectively. Furthermore, A-CQDs-based C-PSCs retain more than 80% of their initial PCE under testing conditions of 35% humidity for 840 h of storage.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have triggered a great deal of research on organic electron transport layers, such as phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), due to their potential application as a strong contender in photovoltaic industry with simple fabrication process and low cost. However, the low electrical conductivity and electron mobility of PCBM hinder the promotion of PSCs. Here we report a successful case of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) doping into PCBM electron transport layer (ETL) of planar N-I-P PSCs, resulting in an obvious increase in PCBM conductivity together with the enhanced charge extraction and reduced the trap state density of perovskite films. A low doping ratio (0.5wt%) would be efficient to boost the Voc, Jsc and FF, a PCE of 17.56% is achieved. More importantly, the light stability of PSCs with PCBM: GQDs was improved: the unpackaged cells can keep > 80% of the initial PCE under simulated sunlight with the full UV component present after 300h, in contrast to the reference device that dropped < 50% during the same period of time.

Abstract:In perovskite solar cells (PSCs), the hole-transport layer (HTL) plays an essential role in effective charge transport and extraction from the photoexcited perovskite, thus being significant for overall power conversion efficiency (PCE) and operational stability. So far, spiro-MeOTAD has been the most widely used HTL despite its inherent drawbacks, such as highly hygroscopic nature, poor conductivity, and mismatched energy-level alignment with the perovskite active layer. Here, a spiro-MeOTAD-based composite HTL modified by microwave method-synthesized carbon quantum dots (CQDs) was proposed and demonstrated as a promising HTL candidate for high-performance PSCs. The results demonstrated that the CQDs/spiro-MeOTAD composite HTL possesses several appealing characteristics for PSC applications, such as suitable energy levels for hole extraction, passivated interfacial trap states, and reduced recombination losses. Consequently, as compared to the control one using an unmodified spiro-MeOTAD HTL, (FAPbI3)0.95(MAPbBr3)0.05-based planar PSCs with composite HTL exhibit notably enhanced PCE and operational stability. Remarkably, an encouraging PCE of 20.41% was achieved for the champion device, and much improved operational stability was also demonstrated under continuous AM1.5 illumination with maximum power point (MPP) tracking conditions.

Abstract:Additive engineering is an effective method to manipulate formation of methyl ammonium metal halide perovskite film for high performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this work, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) prepared from two different carbon sources named as A-CQD and CA-CQD respectively are applied as additives into CH3NH3PbI3 precursor solution via one-step processing. Film morphology and charge transport dynamics of perovskite films with different CQDs additives are investigated. It is found that the A-CQDs incorporated perovskite film has large grain size, excellent crystallinity, enhanced carrier transport ability and high hydrophobic surface. Carbon-based perovskite solar cell using the A-CQD additive shows increased cell performance with the maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.28%. While, PCE of the PSCs modified by the CA-CQD additive and without additive are 7.85% and 10.50% respectively. The A-CQD additive modified PSC also presents good long-term stability and maintains more than 90% of its initial PCE after 200 h.
Dual-interface modification effect of Carbon Quantum Dots on the performance of Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:In this work, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) embedded between buffer layer and active layer and between active layer and cathode could significantly improve the performance of polymer solar cells (PSCs). The device was based on the ITO/PEDOT:PSS/CQDs/P3HT:PC 61 BM/CQDs/Al architecture. The power conversion efficiency of polymer solar cells with P3HT:PC 61 BM as active layer increased from 3.18 to 4.31%. And the results show that dual-interface modification of CQDs enables to enhance the electron mobility and hole mobility simultaneously which may be caused by improvement of contact property. In addition, CQDs shown the luminescent down-shifting effect, which was conducive to increase the light conversion of near-ultraviolet and blue-violet portions of sunlight, resulting in enhanced light capture capability of devices. This study provides a simple way to improve PSCs performance.

Abstract:Colloidal PbS quantum dots (QD), which possess size-tunable bandgap, multiple exciton generation effect, and low-cost synthesis process, are regarded as potential candidates in thin film photovoltaic field. Meanwhile, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are prospecting photovoltaic devices with high power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, the high-performance PSCs largely rely on expensive and unstable organic hole transporting material (HTM), such as spiro-OMeTAD. Here, we design a new PSC architecture with a perovskite/PbS quantum dots (QDs) heterojunction film, which promotes hole extraction and decreases carrier recombination. By optimizing the concentration of colloidal PbS QDs, a PCE of 11.32% can be achieved, which is far higher than the control HTM-free PSCs (6.96% in PCE). In addition, the device structure exhibits higher stability than the conventional PSCs based on the control one. These findings along with low-temperature fabrication (<100 degrees C) offer an alternative route in HTM-free heterojunction structure for low-cost and high-performance flexible PSCs.

Abstract:A synchronous optimization strategy is realized via simultaneously introducing PbS QDs into SnO2 electron transport layer and employing Eu:PbS QDs film with hydrophobic chain ligands as the NIR light‐absorping layer and hole transporting layer of devices simultaneously. The successful synchronous optimization greatly elevates all photovoltaic parameters, reaching a maximum power conversion efficiency of 23.27% with lower hysteresis. Colloidal lead sulfide (PbS) quantum dots (QDs), which possess quantum confinement effect and processing compatibility with perovskite, are regarded as an excellent material for optimizing perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the existing PSCs optimized by PbS QDs are still facing the challenges of poor performance of the charge transport layers, low utilization in the near‐infrared (NIR) region, and unsuitable energy level alignment, which limit the improvement of power conversion efficiency (PCE). Herein, a synchronous optimization strategy is realized via simultaneously introducing PbS QDs into SnO2 electron transport layer and employing rare‐earth‐doped PbS QDs (Eu:PbS QDs) film with hydrophobic chain ligands as the NIR light‐absorping layer and hole transport layer (HTL) of devices. PbS QDs effectively decrease the density of trap states by passivating defects. Eu:PbS QDs film with adjustable bandgap is employed as an absorption layer to broaden the NIR spectral absorption. The well‐matched energy level between Eu:PbS QDs layer and perovskite layer implies efficient hole transfer at the interface. The successful synchronous optimization greatly elevates all photovoltaic parameters, reaching a maximum PCE of 23.27%. This PCE is the highest for PSCs utilizing PbS QDs material in recent years. The optimized PSCs retain long‐term moisture and light stability.

Abstract:In planar n-i-p heterojunction perovskite solar cells, the electron transport layer (ETL) plays important roles in charge extraction and determine the morphology of the perovskite film. Here, we report a solution-processed carbon quantum dots (CQDs)/TiO2 composite that has negligible absorption in the visible spectral range, a very attractive feature for perovskite solar cells. Using this novel CQDs/TiO2 ETL in conjunction with a planar n-i-p heterojunction, we achieved an unprecedented efficiency of ∼19% under standard illumination test conditions. It was found that a CQDs/TiO2 combination increases both the open circuit voltage and short-circuits current density as compared to using TiO2 alone. Various advanced spectroscopic characterizations including ultrafast spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, and electronic impedance spectroscopy elucidate that the CQDs increases the electronic coupling between the CH3NH3PbI3-xClx and TiO2 ETL interface as well as energy levers that contribute to electron extraction.
High-efficiency (>20%) planar carbon-based perovskite solar cells through device configuration engineering

Abstract:Carbon-based perovskite solar cells (C-PSCs) have attracted widespread research interest because of their excellent stability. However, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of C-PSCs, especially planar C-PSCs, lags far behind the certified efficiency (25.5%) of metal-based PSCs. The simple architecture of planar C-PSCs imparts stringent requirements for device configuration. In this study, we fabricated high-performance planar C-PSCs through device configuration engineering in terms of the perovskite active layer and carbon electrode. Through the combination of component and additive engineering, the crystallization and absorption profiles of perovskite active layer have been improved, which afforded sufficient photogenerated carriers and decreased nonradiative recombination. Furthermore, the mechanical and physical properties of carbon electrode were evaluated comprehensively to regulate the back-interface contact. Based on the compromise of the flexibility and conductivity of carbon film, an excellent back-interface contact has been formed, which promoted fast interface charge transfer, thereby decreasing interface recombination and improving carrier collection efficiency. Finally, the as-prepared devices achieved a remarkable PCE of up to 20.04%, which is a record-high value for planar C-PSCs. Furthermore, the as-prepared devices exhibited excellent long-term stability. After storage for 1000 h at room temperature and 25% relative humidity without encapsulation, the as-prepared device retained 94% of its initial performance.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted increasing attentions for their outstanding efficiency and simple fabrication process. However, the commonly used typical titanium dioxide (TiO2) electron transport layer (ETL) requires a high-temperature treatment to crystallize. In this work, the low-temperature (150 degrees C) atomic layer deposition (ALD) processed TiO2 ETL, and the SnO2/PCBM double interfacial modifier have been adopted to fabricate the high performance PSCs of ITO/ALD-TiO2/SnO2/PC61BM/MA(0.7)FA(0.3)PbI((3-x))Cl((x))/Spiro-OMeTAD/Ag. The measurement results show that the PSCs with ALD-TiO2 ETL obtain the higher champion PCE of 19.45% than that of PSC with solution-TiO2 ETLs (PCE = 18.64%), along with the obviously enhanced FF and V-OC, as well as the better light stability and repeatability. And the transient photocurrent and photovoltage results demonstrate that the performance improvement origins from the enhanced charge transport and suppressed charge recombination. Therefore, the low-temperature ALD-TiO2 ETL with suitable modification is a promising strategy to fabricate efficient PSCs and flexible devices.

Abstract:A polymer/PCBM hybrid electron transport layer is reported that enables high-performance perovskite solar cells with a high power conversion efficiency of 16.2% and with negligible hysteresis. Unlike previous approaches of reducing hysteresis by thermal annealing or fullerene passivation, the success of our approach can be mainly attributed to the doping of the PCBM layer using an insulating polymer (polystyrene) and an amine-containing polymeric semiconductor named PFNOX.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs), as the most rapidly developing next-generation thin-film photovoltaic technology, have attracted extensive research interest, yet their efficiency, scalability, and durability remain challenging. α-Fe2O3 could be used as an electron transporting layer (ETL) of planar PSCs, which exhibits a much higher humidity and UV light-stability compared to TiO2-based planar PSCs. However, the photovoltaic conversion efficiency (PCE) of the Fe2O3-based device was still below 15% because of poor interface contact between α-Fe2O3 and perovskite and poor crystal quality of perovskites. In this work, we have engineered the interfaces throughout the entire solar cell via incorporating N, S co-doped graphene quantum dots (NSGQDs). The NSGQDs played remarkable multifunctional roles: (i) facilitated the perovskite crystal growth; (ii) eased charge extraction at both anode and cathode interfaces; and (iii) induced the defect passivation and suppressed the charge recombination. When assembled with a α-Fe2O3 ETL, the planar PSCs exhibited a significantly increased efficiency from 14 to 19.2%, with concomitant reductions in hysteresis, which created a new record of the PCE for Fe2O3-based PSCs to date. In addition, PSCs with the entire device interfacial engineering showed an obviously improved durability, including prominent humidity, UV light, and thermal stabilities. Our interfacial engineering methodology via graphene quantum dots represents a versatile and effective way for building high efficiency as well as durable PSCs.
Performance Enhancement of Hole Transport Layer-Free Carbon-Based CsPbIBr2 Solar Cells through the Application of Perovskite Quantum Dots

Abstract:CsPbIBr2, with its suitable bandgap, shows great potential as the top cell in tandem solar cells. Nonetheless, its further development is hindered by a high defect density, severe carrier recombination, and poor stability. In this study, CsPbI1.5Br1.5 quantum dots were utilized as an additive in the ethyl acetate anti-solvent, while a layer of CsPbBr3 QDs was introduced between the ETL and the CsPbIBr2 light-harvester film. The combined effect of these two QDs enhanced the nucleation, crystallization, and growth of CsPbIBr2 perovskite, yielding high-quality films characterized by an enlarged crystal size, reduced grain boundaries, and smooth surfaces. And a wider absorption range and better energy band alignment were achieved owing to the nano-size effect of QDs. These improvements led to a decreased defect density and the suppression of non-radiative recombination. Additionally, the presence of long-chain organic molecules in the QD solution promoted the formation of a hydrophobic surface, significantly enhancing the long-term stability of CsPbIBr2 PSCs. Consequently, the devices achieved a PCE of 9.20% and maintained an initial efficiency of 85% after 60 days of storage in air. Thus, this strategy proves to be an effective approach for the preparation of efficient and stable CsPbIBr2 PSCs.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been developed rapidly in recent time, and efficient planar PSCs are regarded as the most promising alternative to the Si solar cells. In this study, we demonstrated that Li-doping of compact TiO2 can reduce the density of electron traps and increase the conductivity of the electron transport layer (ETL) of PSCs. Due to the improved electronic property of ETL, the Li-doped compact TiO2 based planar heterojunction PSCs exhibit negligible hysteretic J-V behavior. Comparing with the undoped compact TiO2 based PSCs, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the Li-doped compact TiO2 film based PSCs is improved from 14.2% to 17.1%. Fabrication of highly efficient planar PSCs provides a pathway for commercialization of PSCs.

Abstract:PCN‐224 quantum dots (QDs) with abundant Lewis base groups are incorporated into perovskite layer and hole transport layer (HTL) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). PCN‐224 QDs enable strong coordination interaction with the under‐coordinated Pb2+ ions in perovskite film and mobile Li+ ions in HTL, ultimately leading to superior humidity, thermal, light stress, and operational stabilities of PSCs. As the power‐conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic–inorganic lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is approaching the theoretical maximum, the most crucial issue concerns long‐term ambient stability. Here, the application of PCN‐224 quantum dots (QDs) is reported, a typical Zr‐based porphyrinic metal–organic framework (MOF), to enhance the ambient stability of PSCs. PCN‐224 QDs with abundant Lewis‐base groups (e.g., CO, C−N, CN) contribute to high‐quality perovskite films with enlarged grain size and reduced defect density by interaction with under‐coordinated Pb2+. Meanwhile, PCN‐224 QDs enable the well‐matched energy level at the perovskite/hole transport layer (HTL) interface, thereby facilitating hole extraction and transport. More importantly, PCN‐224 QDs‐treated HTL can capture Li+ from bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide additive, leading to the reduced aggregation and less direct contact with moisture for hygroscopic Li‐TFSI. Moreover, PCN‐224 QDs mitigated Li+ ion migration into the perovskite layer, thus avoiding the formation of deleterious defects. The resultant devices yield a champion PCE of 22.51%, along with substantially improved durability, including humidity, thermal and light soaking stabilities. The findings provide a new approach toward efficient and stable PSCs by applying MOF QDs.

Abstract:Additive engineering is one of the most effective techniques for optimizing the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the previous research mainly focused on adopting this strategy to a single layer of the PSCs. In this work, a double-layer synergistic optimization approach is employed by simultaneously introducing functional black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) into the electron transport layer (ETL) and perovskite layer. The BPQDs with superior conductivity is doped into SnO2 ETL to effectively fill the electron traps and enhance electron mobility of SnO2. Meanwhile, the 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane-modified BPQDs () is introduced into the perovskite bulk to moderately tailor its intrinsic characteristics, and this synchronously facilitates the perovskite nucleation and growth, passivates defects and improves moisture-resistance of perovskite film. Taking advantage of the synergistic effects, efficient PSCs with power conversion efficiency of 22.85% with ultrahigh open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 1.22 V is demonstrated, this VOC value ranks in the highest values of perovskite film with a bandgap of ~ 1.60 eV. Additionally, the non-encapsulated BPQDs modified PSCs show better long time and humidity stability.

Abstract:Planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been extensively researched as a promising photovoltaic technology, wherein the electron extraction and transfer play a crucial role in the power conversion efficiency (PCE). Here, we proposed a ligand-engineered deposition strategy based on the coordination ability of ligands (e.g., tartaric acid) to regulate TiO2 film and interfacial structure. This strategy can effectively inhibit particle aggregation of TiO2 film through the steric hindrance of assembled ligands. Furthermore, the decreased interfacial contact impedance and enhanced electron extraction are achieved between TiO2 and perovskite, due to the smooth topography and cross-linked structure formed by tartaric acid that bonds with Ti and Pb atoms. Accordingly, an impressive PCE of 24.8% with a fill factor exceeding 0.83 is successfully obtained, which is the highest PCE among TiO2-based planar PSCs reported so far. In addition, unencapsulated PSCs can maintain ∼95% of initial efficiency upon exposure to ambient air for 2,000 h.

Abstract:Perovskite/PCBM heterojunctions are efficient for fabricating perovskite solar cells with high performance and long-term stability. In this study, an efficient perovskite/PCBM heterojunction was formed via conventional sequential deposition and one-step formation processes. Compared with conventional deposition, the one-step process was more facile, and produced a perovskite thin film of substantially improved quality due to fullerene passivation. Moreover, the resulting perovskite/PCBM heterojunction exhibited more efficient carrier transfer and extraction, and reduced carrier recombination. The perovskite solar cell device based on one-step perovskite/PCBM heterojunction formation exhibited a higher maximum PCE of 17.8% compared with that from the conventional method (13.7%). The device also showed exceptional stability, retaining 83% of initial PCE after 60 days of storage under ambient conditions.

Abstract:Low‐temperature paintable carbon‐electrode‐based perovskite solar cells (LC‐PSCs) are developed predominantly due to several significant advantages of carbon electrodes: they do not require a hole transport layer (HTL) and are low‐cost, easy to fabricate on a large scale, and possess high ambient stability. The most critical hindrance to the photovoltaic performance of LC‐PSCs is the inferior contact between the perovskite and carbon layers. Herein, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as interface modifiers between the perovskite layer and carbon electrode are applied, which can facilitate hole injection into the carbon electrode, thus improving the photovoltaic performance of LC‐PSCs. Meanwhile, the crystalline properties and hole mobility of the perovskite layer are improved significantly, and defect states in the perovskite layer are passivated following the embedding of CQDs. Finally, a champion efficiency of 13.3% in LC‐PSCs based on perovskite‐CQDs hybrid films without HTL is achieved for an active area of 1 cm2, which represents a 24.3% improvement over the pristine device. Furthermore, LC‐PSC devices maintain more than 95% of their initial efficiency under demanding conditions (humidity >40%, 1000 h). This work opens up a promising pathway to improve the photovoltaic performance of LC‐PSCs and potentially also of other thin‐film solar cells.
