Abstract:Conventional thermosetting polyimides and their composites either possess poor thermal oxidative stability or have non-functional properties. Here, composites based on carbon fiber reinforced carborane-containing polyimides are fabricated using a hot press process, which are reported having well neutron shielding property and thermal performance. The intermediate imide oligomers have been synthesized from a novel bis(o-carborane)containing diamine 1,4-bis(2-(4-aminophenyl)-o-carboranylbenzene. After thermal curing, the thermoset polyimide resins exhibit above 97.7% char yield at 800 degrees C under air atmosphere. Moreover, carbon fiber reinforced composites present not only above 500 degrees C glass transition temperatures but also basically unchanged storage modulus over a wide range temperature of 50-500 degrees C. Neutron shielding permeability study, performed on one of the composites in 2 mm-thickness, display that the composite possessed excellent neutron shielding performance. This study might open up great opportunities for the preparation and design of various novel polyimides and their composites with outstanding thermal and neutron shielding performance.
