Abstract:The realization of water electrolysis on the basis of highly active, cost-effective electrocatalysts is significant yet challenging for achieving sustainable hydrogen production from water. Herein, N-doped Ni3 S2 /N-doped MoS2 1D hetero-nanowires supported by Ni foam (N-Ni3 S2 /N-MoS2 /NF) are readily synthesized through a chemical transformation strategy by using NiMoO4 nanowire array growth on Ni foam (NiMoO4 /NF) as the starting material. With the in situ generation of Ni3 S2 /MoS2 heterointerfaces within nanowires and the incorporation of N- anions, an extraordinary hydrophilic nature with abundant, well-exposed active sites and optimal reaction dynamics for both oxidation and reduction of water are obtained. Attributed to these properties, as-converted N-Ni3 S2 /N-MoS2 /NF exhibits highly efficient electrocatalytic activities for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions under alkaline conditions. The superior bifunctional properties of N-Ni3 S2 /N-MoS2 /NF enable it to effectively catalyze the overall water-splitting reaction.

Abstract:The utilization of nonprecious metal electrocatalysts for water-splitting may be the ultimate solution for sustainable and clean hydrogen energy. MXene, an emerging two-dimensional material, exhibits many unique properties such as possible metal-like conductivity, hydrophilic surface, and rich chemistry, rendering a group of promising catalysts and catalyst support materials. In this study, exfoliated Ti3C2 MXenes serve as a substrate to perpendicularly grow uniform mesoporous NiCoP nanosheets through an in situ interface-growth strategy and subsequent phosphorization. The obtained Ti3C2@mNiCoP materials with a stable hierarchical sandwich structure possess excellent conductivity, large surface area, and uniform mesopores with high pore volume. With these beneficial properties, the Ti3C2@mNiCoP material exhibits superior overall water-splitting performance compared with that of its building-block counterparts, matching the state-of-the-art water-splitting electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The solar-driven water splitting process is highly attractive for alternative energy utilization, while developing efficient, earth-abundant, bifunctional catalysts for both oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction has remained as a major challenge. Herein, we develop an ordered CoMnO@CN superlattice structure as an efficient bifunctional water-splitting electrocatalyst, in which uniform Co-Mn oxide (CoMnO) nanoparticles are coated with a thin, continuous nitrogen-doped carbon (CN) framework. The CoMnO nanoparticles enable optimized OER activity with effective electronic structure configuration, and the CN framework serves as an excellent HER catalyst. Importantly, the ordered superlattice structure is beneficial for enhanced reactive sites, efficient charge transfer, and structural stability. This bifunctional superlattice catalyst manifests optimized current densities and electrochemical stability in overall water splitting, outperforming most of the previously reported single- or bifunctional electrocatalysts. Combining with a silicon photovoltaic cell, this CoMnO@CN superlattice bifunctional catalyst enables unassisted solar water splitting continuously for ∼5 days with a solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of ∼8.0%. Our discovery suggests that these transition metal oxide-based superlattices may serve as a unique structure modality for efficient bifunctional water splitting electrocatalysts with scale-up potentials.

Abstract:Producing hydrogen through electrocatalytic overall water splitting with ampere-level current density is still limited by the high cost and poor stability of electrocatalysts. In this work, a new type Ni 2 P/MnP 4 heterojunction composite material was designed and prepared as bifunctional electrocatalyst. Based on XPS spectra and theoretical calculation, the formation of Ni 2 P/MnP 4 heterojunction successfully modulates the local electronic structure of Ni 2 P and enhances the ionization of H and Ni by increasing the electron transfer rate. Moreover, the special nanovilli structure and superhydropholic/superaerophobic surface of Ni 2 P/MnP 4 heterojunction accelerates the transfer of electrolyte and gaseous products. Benefiting from these advantages, the as-prepared Ni 2 P/MnP 4 /CF not only exhibits superior electrocatalytic performance, which can release 10 mA/cm 2 current density with a low overpotential of 69 mV and 247 mV for HER and OER respectively, but also shows admirable stability of continuous overall water splitting to drive 1000 mA/cm 2 for 180 h without notable activity degradation. We believe this material possesses outstanding potential for industrial applications, and our strategy may provide a new pathway to design relative materials.

Abstract:The development of efficient bifunctional catalysts for overall water splitting is highly desirable and essential for the advancement of hydrogen technology. In this work, Mo-Ni(OH)2/FexNiy(OH)3x+2y with hierarchical nanotube structure is constructed on flexible carbon cloth (CC) through simple electrochemical deposition and hydrothermal method. The hollow tube-structure is in favor of both exposing active sites and enhancing mass transfer capability. Moreover, the doping of Mo can enhance the electronic conductivity of heterostructures. The interfacial interaction between amorphous and crystal can enhance effectively the charge transfer kinetics across the interface. Therefore, Mo-Ni(OH)2/FexNiy(OH)3x+2y can achieve a low overpotential of 57 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 229 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at 10 mA·cm-2. In addition, Mo-Ni(OH)2/FexNiy(OH)3x+2y needs a potential of only 1.54 V at 10 mA·cm-2 for overall water splitting, and retains for a long period of time (60 h) reliable. The work will provide a valuable approach to the construction of highly efficient electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Abstract:Interfacial engineering in the rapid development of high-performance electrocatalysts for water splitting has been explored as a promising strategy to improve catalytic performance due to the tunable free energy of reaction intermediates on the interfacial compositions. Here, multiple-interfacial Ni/molybdenum carbide hybrid nanoparticles embedded in N-doped carbon nanosheets (Ni/Mo2C@NC) electrocatalyst were fabricated via a solid-state co-reduction method. The as-synthesized catalyst exhibits excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity with an overpotential of 91 mV at 10 mA/cm2 and a Tafel slope of 74 mV/dec in alkaline solution, and outstanding stability owing to the high conductivity, abundant interfacial active sites, and synergistic effect between Ni and Mo2C nanoparticles. This electrocatalyst as bifunctional electrode possesses an applied voltage of 1.64 V at 10 mA/cm2 and long-term durability in an electrolysis cell. Moreover, density functional theory calculations reveal that the electron transfer across Ni/Mo2C heterointerfaces could optimize the water adsorption/dissociation and H adsorption/desorption capacities, thereby boosting the intrinsic HER activity.

Abstract:Bifunctional electrocatalyst is promising for the overall water splitting with high efficiency. Herein, inspired by the superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of transition metal oxide and remarkable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of transition metal phosphide, hierarchical NiCo2O4/Ni2P core-shell nanocone array on Ni foam is synthesized. The synergetic effect between the NiCo2O4 "core" and the Ni2P "shell" results in dramatically enhanced catalytic performance. It shows higher activity and longer durability in both OER and HER than bare NiCo2O4 or Ni2P. The hierarchical NiCo2O4/Ni2P catalyst is capable of catalyzing OER with a low overpotential of 250 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) in alkaline media. Moreover, it shows excellent catalytic activity for HER to achieve 10 mA cm(-2) at a small overpotential of 45 mV. When the NiCo2O4/Ni2P is adopted as both anode and cathode in a two-electrode cell for overall water splitting, it only needs 1.59 V to reach a current density of 10 mA cm(-2). Almost no decay is observed after the electrodes work for about 50 h. The newly developed electrocatalyst combines the satisfactory working stability with outstanding catalytic activity, which paves the way for exploring overall water splitting catalysts.

Abstract:Probing robust electrocatalysts for overall water splitting is vital in energy conversion. However, the catalytic efficiency of reported catalysts is still limited by few active sites, low conductivity, and/or discrete electron transport. Herein, bimetallic nickel-copper (NiCu) nanoalloys confined in mesoporous nickel-copper nitride (NiCuN) nanowires array encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) framework (NC-NiCu-NiCuN) is constructed by carbonization-/nitridation-induced in situ growth strategies. The in situ coupling of NiCu nanoalloys, NiCuN, and carbon layers through dual modulation of electrical behavior and electron transfer is not only beneficial to continuous electron transfer throughout the whole system, but also promotes the enhancement of electrical conductivity and the accessibility of active sites. Owing to strong synergetic coupling effect, such NC-NiCu-NiCuN electrocatalyst exhibits the best hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance with a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at low overpotentials of 93 mV for HER and 232 mV for OER, respectively. As expected, a two-electrode cell using NC-NiCu-NiCuN is constructed to deliver 10 mA cm(-2) water-splitting current at low cell voltage of 1.56 V with remarkable durability over 50 h. This work serves as a promising platform to explore the design and synthesis of robust bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic water splitting is a facile, stable, and economical way to produce renewable H2 and NiCo2S4 has been widely used as a bifunctional catalyst for full water splitting. In this work, we first reported amorphous Co–P modified NiCo2S4 nanorods as a bifunctional catalyst toward electrocatalytic water splitting in alkaline solution. The coated Co–P amorphous nanosheets could decrease the energy barrier of hydrogen adsorption-desorption and H2O adsorption on the surface of NiCo2S4, which accelerated the catalytic performance and reaction kinetics toward HER and OER in alkaline media. Therefore, the amorphous/crystalline Co–P/NiCo2S4 nanoarrays exhibited more favorable performance toward full-water-splitting compared to pure NiCo2S4, and the cell voltage at 40 mA cm−2 decreased from 1.709 V to 1.665 V after decorating Co–P on the surface of NiCo2S4.

Abstract:Abstract Highly active and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting are important for clean and renewable energy technologies. The development of energy‐saving electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by replacing the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with a thermodynamically favorable electrochemical oxidation (ECO) reaction has attracted increasing attention. In this study, a self‐supported, hierarchical, porous, nitrogen‐doped carbon (NC)@CuCo 2 N x /carbon fiber (CF) is fabricated and used as an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for both HER and OER in alkaline solutions with excellent activity and stability. Moreover, a two‐electrode electrolyzer is assembled using the NC@CuCo 2 N x /CF as an electrocatalyst at both cathode and anode electrodes for H 2 production and selective ECO of benzyl alcohol with high conversion and selectivity. The excellent electrocatalytic activity is proposed to be mainly due to the hierarchical architecture beneficial for exposing more catalytic active sites, enhancing mass transport. Density functional theoretical calculations reveal that the adsorption energies of key species can be modulated due to the synergistic effect between CoN and CuN. This work provides a reference for the development of high‐performance bifunctional electrocatalysts for simultaneous production of H 2 and high‐value‐added fine chemicals.

The Self-Supported Zn-doped CoNiP Microsphere/thorn Hierarchical Structures As Efficient Bifunctional Catalysts for Water Splitting

Abstract:The hierarchical electrocatalysts with the superaerophobic property are in favor of removal of gas bubbles and supply of numerous active sites to improve the electrochemical catalytic activity for water splitting. In this work, the self-supported Zn-doped CoNiP (Zn-CoNiP/NF) hierarchical structure that consisted of nanothorns and radial microspheres were prepared with via a facile precursor phosphorization method. Zn-doping could tailor the initial electronic state of CoNiP to improve the hydrogen or oxygen atom binding, which effectively promoted the catalytic kinetics of water splitting. The hierarchical structure not only offered more catalytic active sites for water splitting, but also facilitated gas releasing due to the superaerophobic interface. The hierarchical Zn-CoNiP structure showed a high hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) efficiency in electrolytes with pH 0-14, which yielded low overpotentials of 73 mV in acidic solution and 34 mV in alkaline media at current density of 10 mA cm(-2). Furthermore, it also had evidenced by an overpotential of 310 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the current density of 50 mA cm(-2). Note that the required cell initial voltage was 1.51 V for overall water splitting. These results were comparable or even better than many non-noble catalysts. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Designing and constructing bifunctional electrocatalysts is vital for water splitting. Particularly, the rational interface engineering can effectively modify the active sites and promote the electronic transfer, leading to the improved splitting efficiency. Herein, free-standing and defect-rich heterogeneous MoS2/NiS2 nanosheets for overall water splitting are designed. The abundant heterogeneous interfaces in MoS2/NiS2 can not only provide rich electroactive sites but also facilitate the electron transfer, which further cooperate synergistically toward electrocatalytic reactions. Consequently, the optimal MoS2/NiS2 nanosheets show the enhanced electrocatalytic performances as bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting. This study may open up a new route for rationally constructing heterogeneous interfaces to maximize their electrochemical performances, which may help to accelerate the development of nonprecious electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Abstract:The development of efficient and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for the successful implementation of water splitting technologies, which represents a promising and appealing solution to the sustainable-energy conversion. Abstract:Hierarchical NiCo2Se4 arrays composed of atomically thin nanosheets grown on carbon fiber paper are first synthesized, which exhibit an outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction performance and good durability in neutral media. Benefiting from abundant vacancies and unique nanostructure, the hierarchical ultrathin nanosheet simultaneously improve the thermodynamics and kinetics of the electrocatalyst. The inefficiency of electrocatalysts for water splitting in neutral media stems from a comprehensive impact of poor intrinsic activity, a limited number of active sites, and inadequate mass transport. Herein, hierarchical ultrathin NiCo2Se4 nanosheets are synthesized by the selenization of NiCo2O4 porous nanoneedles. Theoretical and experimental investigations reveal that the intrinsic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity primarily originate from the NiCo2Se4, whereas the high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance is related to the NiCoOOH due to the structural reconstruction. The abundant Se and O vacancies introduced by atomically thin nanostructure modulate the electronic structure of NiCo2Se4 and NiCoOOH, thereby improving the intrinsic HER and OER activities, respectively. COMSOL simulation demonstrate the edges of extended nanosheets from the main body significantly promote the charge aggregation, boosting the reduction and oxidation current during HER/OER process. This charge aggregation effect notably exceeds the tip effect for the nanoneedle, highlighting the unique advantage of the hierarchical nanosheet structure. Benefiting from abundant vacancies and unique nanostructure, the hierarchical ultrathin nanosheet simultaneously improve the thermodynamics and kinetics of the electrocatalyst. The optimized samples display an overpotential of 92 mV for HER and 214 mV for OER at 100 mA cm−2, significantly surpassing the performance of currently reported HER/OER catalysts in neutral media.

Abstract:The design of multi-components nanostructure with interface heterojunction is the cutting-edge research in recent years because the catalytic activity, stability, and durability of catalysts are highly affected by the strong electronic effects, geometric effects, and synergistic effects occurring at the interface. Based on this, an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst embedding highly dispersed Ni 2 P/Co nano heterojunction at the porous hollow-out carbon shell is developed for overall water splitting through evenly epitaxial growth of ultrathin Ni 2 P nanosheets on Co-based ZIF-67. The distinct electron interaction between the interfacial Ni 2 P (300) and Co (100) effectively lowers the overpotential of OER (316 mV vs. RHE) and HER (149 mV vs. RHE) at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculation further identifies that the Ni 2 P and Co heterojunctions optimize the adsorption energy of intermediate products and lower the energy barrier of the rate-determining step of OER significantly. This work provides a rational design of a well-defined interface toward overall water splitting electrocatalysts and offers a scientific basis for an in-depth understanding of the mechanism of the catalysts with nano heterojunction.

Abstract:Efficient and low-cost bifunctional catalysts toward both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for overall water splitting are of great significance to energy and environmental sustainability. Here, we report on a novel hierarchical Cu@CoFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) core-shell nanostructure catalyst for efficient overall water splitting in the alkaline medium. Benefiting from the smart structure, the optimized composite affords small overpotentials of 171 mV for the HER and 240 mV for the OER at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), along with Tafel slopes of 36.4 and 44.4 mV dec(-1) for the HER and OER, respectively. Strikingly, the overall water splitting performance is very good since it just requires a voltage of 1.681 V to gain a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), which is only 60 mV larger than the benchmark of IrO2 (+)/Pt (-) electrodes. Moreover, the optimized composite electrodes exhibit outstanding durability within 48 h testing, which is much better than that of the benchmark. Our rational design of the hierarchical core-shell nanoarchitectures presents a simple approach to fabricate advanced catalysts for water splitting.

Abstract:Design and construction of low-cost bifunctional catalysts with excellent activity and stability is vital for water splitting. Herein, a strategy to construct bifunctional sheet-on-sheet hierarchical MoS2/NiS2 het-erostructures in-situ grown onto carbon cloth (CC) for water splitting was proposed. Benefitting from the abundant heterogeneous interfaces, rich defects, fully exposed active sites, and electronic interaction, the as-obtained optimal MoS2/NiS2/CC catalyst exhibits superior electrochemical activity and durability to-ward both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Specifically, current densities of 10, 50, and 100 mA cm(-2) can be reached at overpotentials of 80, 142, 175 and 303, 348, 384 mV for HER and OER, respectively. More importantly, when assembled as both cathode and anode for overall water splitting, a low cell voltage of 1.63 V is required to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), demonstrating that MoS2/NiS2/CC is a promising candidate for water splitting.
