Abstract:This work applies an in-situ growth method to synthesize the ZIF-8 composites encapsulating yellow and blue dyes, namely RhB and C120, respectively. These two dyes are successfully introduced into ZIF-8 crystals, proved via the nitrogen adsorption, FTIR and powder XRD measurements. Then, these two types of dye@ZIF-8s are mixed, to achieve a white light-emission with CIE coordinates of (0.345, 0.294) under the excitation light at 365 nm. The encapsulation of dyes in isolated pores of ZIF-8 effectively mitigates the aggregation-induced quenching and the energy re-absorption between dyes. Also, the photo stability of this white-light material is investigated for practical application.

Abstract:Encapsulating luminescence units into porous metal-organic frameworks to obtain white-light emission has attracted much attention because of their high designability and excellent color-tuning flexibility. In this study, two types of luminescence units with different emission color coverage, namely green-emitting carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and red-emitting rhodamine B (RhB) molecules, were encapsulated into porous ZIF-8 to obtain the yellow-emitting composite phosphor for use in white light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Single-phase single-shell CQDs&2, as well as single-phase multi-shell 2@2, were fabricated and fine-tuned (by varying the amount of accommodated CQDs and RhB) so that the emitted color is near that of the commercial yellow-emitting phosphor. The multi-shell 2@2 has much better luminescence efficiency than that of the single-shell one. This is because the multi-shell structure provides a much larger separation distance of the encapsulated guest units, diminishing the energy-transfer-caused efficiency decrease. It is also shown that a bright source of white light can be realized by coating the 2@2 nanocomposite on a commercial blue (460 nm) LED chip.

Abstract:The powder form and low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of fluorescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) present a serious obstacle to fabricating high-efficiency film-like lighting devices. Here, we present a facile way to produce thin films of CdSex S1-x /ZnS quantum dots (QDs)@ZIF-8 with high PLQY by encapsulating red, green, and blue CdSex S1-x /ZnS QDs in ZIF-8 through a one-pot solid-confinement conversion process. The QDs@ZIF-8 thin film emits warm white light with good color quality and presents good thermal stability and long-term durability.

Abstract:A novel white light-emitting diode based on a large Stokes shift (~200 nm) and using pure green light-emitting CdSeS quantum dots (QDs) with an Ag/ZnSnO/QDs/spiro-TPD/ITO structure has been fabricated in which ZnSnO and spiro-TPD are served as the electron and hole transport layer, respectively. The large Stokes shift of the CdSeS QDs excludes potentially Förster resonance energy transfer process, which allows spiro-TPD to act as both an emitter and hole transport layer. The devices exhibit a wide EL spectrum consisting of three components: blue emission from spiro-TPD, green emission from QD band–band recombination, and red emission from QD surface-state recombination. We further found that as the intensity ratios among these three components vary with bias the color of the QD light-emitting diodes is tunable. The device displays a good white light-emitting characteristic with CIE coordinates of (0.281, 0.384) at an appropriate bias.

Abstract:The existing white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) are mostly fabricated with downshifting phosphors and ultraviolet (UV) or blue light LED chips. To achieve unconventional upconversion white-light-emitting phosphors, a novel strategy by encapsulating upconversion nanoparticles and organic dyes into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) at room temperature is put forward. Herein, lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (NaYF4:Yb, Tm@NaYF4 core-shell UCNPs), dye 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl 6 (p dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM) and dye Coumarin 6 (C6) with blue, red and green light emission, respectively, are encapsulated together into ZIF-8 through a facile one-pot solid-confinement conversion process. Owing to their appropriate spectral overlaps and efficient energy transfer processes between two pairs of UCNPs/DCM and UCNPs/C6 within ZIF-8, the optimized UCNP/DCM/C6@ZIF-8 thin film exhibits high-quality white-light emission upon a commercial 980 nm LED chip with ideal CIE coordinates of (0.33, 0.33), high color rendering index (CRI) value of 93 and moderate correlated color temperature (CCT) value of 5567 K. This strategy paves the way for other upconversion phosphorous nanoparticles and fluorescent molecules for WLEDs applications excited by near infrared light.

Abstract:White light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are very important energy-saving lighting devices. It is still a big challenge to fabricate pure white LEDs using low-cost, easy-to-process and environment-friendly phosphors. Herein, we report a pure white LED fabricated by combining rationally designed fluorescein-centered polymers with a blue LED chip. Pure white LEDs with Commission International de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.33, 0.33), a satisfactory color rendering index (CRI) of 82 and a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5230 K were achieved. Covalently embedding fluorescein into the center of the polymer chain realized molecular dispersion of fluorescein. Of significance, by varying the types of the side groups of the polymer, the fluorescence properties of the embedded fluorescein unit can be regulated. The performance parameters (i.e., emission spectra, CIE coordinates, CRI and CCT) of the as-fabricated LEDs could also be tailored by varying the working voltages, and the types and amounts of fluorescein-centered polymers.

Abstract:Dual fluorescence compounds exhibit a wide emission spectrum in visible-light range and show huge application prospect in white-light OLED (WOLED). However, few of them can realize the trade-off between high color purity of white-light emission and high emission efficiency. In this work, using sulfur atom-fused electron acceptor (A) unit 2,4-diphenylthieno[3,2- d ]pyrimidine (TP) and planar electron donor (D) unit phenothiazine (PTZ), a series of novel dual fluorescence compounds with simple twisting D-A configuration were designed and synthesized, denoted as PTZ-2TP , PTZ-4TP and DPTZ-TP , respectively. Simultaneous dual fluorescence emission could be realized both solution and film state of the current system via optimizing polarization environment and doped concentration, which are attributed to the characteristic quasi-axial (QA) and quasi-equal (QE) conformations. Subsequently, these compounds were successfully applied in WOLED with high efficiency. DPTZ-TP as emitter endows the WOLED with the best device performance with greenish-white light emission, CIE coordinates of (0.33, 0.44) and high EQE max of 11.87%, which is the highest records of such single compound systems.

Abstract:A series of fluorescein-encapsulated zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (fluorescein@ZIF-8) luminescent nanoparticles with a scalable guest loading has been fabricated and characterized. The successful encapsulation of the organic dye (fluorescein) is supported by both experimental evidence and theoretical simulations. The measured optical band gap is found to be comparable with the computed values of a hypothetical guest-host system. Isolated monomers and aggregates species of fluorescein confined in ZIF-8 nanocrystals have been systematically investigated through fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy. The quantum yield (QY) of the obtained solid-state materials is particularly high (QY~98%), especially when the concentration of the fluorescein guest is low. Combining a blue LED chip and a thin photoactive film of fluorescein@ZIF-8, we demonstrate a device with good optical tunability for multicolor and white light emissions. Additionally, we show that the fluorescein@ZIF-8 nanoparticles exhibit an improved photostability due to the shielding effect conferred by the nanoconfinement of host framework, making them promising candidates for practical applications such as solid-state lighting, photonics, and optical communications.

Abstract:In this study, two isomers BP1 and BP2, featuring diindolophenthiazine as donor and benzophenone as acceptor, are designed and synthesized for the first time. Both compounds exhibit dual conformations and thus dual emissions of fluorescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence in films to achieve single molecular white-light emissions. Owing to the dual conformations and the changes of their corresponding compositions in amorphous and crystalline states, machanochromism is found for both compounds. Additionally, white photoluminescence with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.31, 0.33) is achieved for BP2-doped films. Furthermore, solution-processed single-molecule white organic light-emitting diodes are also successfully developed based on BP2 as the solely emitter, demonstrating an external quantum efficiency of 2.61% at CIE coordinates of (0.33, 0.36).

Abstract:This article presents a new strategy to achieve white-light emission from single tetraphenylethylene-substituted pyrenes (TPE-Pys) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics. TPE-Pys were synthesized by a Pd-catalyzed coupling reaction of a boronic acid or pinacol ester of pyrene and tetraphenylethylene (TPE) derivatives and showed multicolor emission by introducing different substituents on the phenyl rings of TPE. TPE-Pys with a TPE unit at the 1-position and asymmetric TPE units at 2,7-positions show dual fluorescence in THF/water mixtures to realize white-light emission with CIE coordinates of (x = 0.30 and y = 0.41) and (x = 0.21 and y = 0.16), respectively. The structure-property relationship of TPE-Pys were investigated to elucidate the origin of the white emission. The results showed that due to the weak electronic interaction of pyrene and its chromophoric units at the 2,7-positions and the constraint of the rotation of the TPE unit at the 1-position of pyrene, each component can exhibit its own emission color. The combination of appropriate colors gives rise to white-light emission. Such a principle of molecular design may open a new avenue for preparing advanced multicolor and multifunctional optical materials for organic electronics.

Abstract:We proposed a white light-emitting diode based on a dendritic polyfluorene derivative poly((9,9-dibutyl-2,7-diiodo-9H-fluorene)trisphenylamine) (PDFA) as blue-green emitter and doped it with a fluorescent dye 4-dicyanomethylene-2-methyl-6-(p-dimethyl-aminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM) as red emitter. White light was achieved by the incoherent superposition of blue-green emission produced from PDFA and red emission from DCM. The Commission Internationale d’Énclairage chromaticity coordinates of the devices varied from (0.19,0.22) to (0.39,0.55) with the increase of DCM concentration (from 0 to 0.2wt.%).

Abstract:Dual emissive Cd-free quantum dots (QDs) are in great demand for various applications. However, their synthesis has been faced with challenges. Here, we demonstrate the dual emissive Ag:InP/ZnScore/shell QDs with the excellent photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) up to 75% and their PL dependence on the reaction temperature, reaction time, the different ZnX2 (X = I, Cl, and Br) precursors, the ratio of In/Zn and the Ag dopant concentration. The as-prepared Ag: InP/ZnS QDs exhibit dual emission with one peak position of about 492 nm owing to the intrinsic emission, and the other peak position of about 575 nm resulting from Ag-doped emission. These dual emissive QDs are integrated with the commercial GaN-based blue LEDs, and the simulation results show that the Ag: InP/ZnS QDs-based white LEDs could realize bright natural white-lights with the luminous efficacy (LE) of 94.2-98.4lm/W, the color rendering index (CRI) of 82-83 and the color quality scale (CQS) of 82-83 at different correlated color temperatures (CCT). This unique combination of the above properties makes this new class of dual emissive QDs attractive for white LED applications. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Highly thermostable RhB@Zr-Eddc composites with the Rhodamine B (RhB) enclosed into the nanocages of Zr-Eddc was synthesized by one-pot method under hydrothermal conditions, whose structure, morphology and stability were characterized through the X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). RhB@Zr-Eddc showed the highly thermal stability up to 550°C and emitted the bright red-light emission at 605 nm, which could highly selective detect the nitrofurazone (NFZ) among eleven other antibiotics in aqueous solution. Furthermore, via combining the RhB@Zr-Eddc with commercial green phosphor (Y3Al5O12:Ce3+, Ga3+), the mixture was encapsulated onto a 455 nm blue LED chip, creating an ex-cellent white light emitting diode (WLED) device with the correlated colour temperature (CCT) of 4710 K, luminous efficiency (LE) of 43.17 lm/w and Color Rendering Index (CRI) of 89.2.

Abstract:Benefiting from the large Stokes shift between fluorescence and phosphorescence, fluorescence/phosphorescence dual-emitting carbon dots (CDs) have gradually entered at the stage of single-phase white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) as 'green material'. However, most of the developed dual-emitting CDs have weak phosphorescence, short emission wavelength and narrow emission band, resulting in relatively bluish white light emission and low color rendering index (CRI). Herein, an ultrabroad-band fluorescence/phosphorescence dual-emitting CD-based material () is prepared by thermal treatment of boric acid (BA) and CDs with large conjugated structure. The stable covalent bonding between CDs and BA, as well as three-dimensional spatial restriction effect of self-polymerization BA molecules around CDs during long-term heating efficiently rigidified the single/triplet excited states of CDs from non-radiative deactivation, thus producing strong dual emissive materials with the high phosphorescence quantum yield of 21%. Remarkable, the prepared powders exhibit bright pure white light emission with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.32, 0.33) and the highest reported full width at half maximum of 250 nm. Based on the unique characteristics of , it was used as a color conversion layer to prepare a WLED with CIE coordinates of (0.35, 0.33) and the CRI value of 87.

Abstract:We have demonstrated white organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) based on a yellow phosphorescence iridium complex and an efficient blue fluorescence. The property of the blue fluorescence is studied and the pure blue device can obtain a peak current efficiency (CE) of 8.5cd/A. The best obtained WOLED shows a peak CE of 24.7cd/A at 1000cd/m2 with Commission Internationale De L'Eclairage coordinate of (0.44, 0.48), while WOLEDs based on different architectures exhibit good color stability.

Abstract:Recent progress in the field of carbon dots (CDs) has highlighted their significant potential, attributed to their exceptional optical properties and diverse applications, most notably in the realm of white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). CDs are recognized for their broad spectrum of emission, adjustable fluorescence, and excellent thermal stability, making them ideal candidates for use in WLEDs. However, the challenge lies in synthesizing CDs that can emit long-wavelength, multicolor light from a single host material. This research presents a highly efficient dual-core-shell structured white-emitting phosphor, denoted as ZnS:Mn-CDs@SiO2, which has achieved an impressive photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 25.8% and an expansive full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 131 nm. The successful implementation of this novel material has led to the creation of WLEDs with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates at (0.32, 0.38) and a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5856 K, marking a significant stride in the development of high-performance WLEDs.
