Abstract:It is challenging to effectively purge wastewater containing heavy metal ions at low concentration. In order to remove trace Cr (VI) from wastewater efficiently, a positively charged microporous membrane was prepared by firstly non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) of amphiphilic polymer and secondly surface quaternization modification. The morphologies, surface roughness, surface charge, hydrophilicity, and pore size of membranes were characterized. Based on the dual action of micellar adsorption and charge repulsion, when surfactant is 4 mM and Cr (VI) is 60 ppm, the surface quaternization membrane (Q-MPVD) achieves 99.8 % Cr (VI) rejection simultaneously accompanied by a permeability of 100 LMH/bar. Meanwhile, the effects of STAC concentration, Cr (VI) concentration, pH as well as inorganic salt concentration on the composite micellar size, and Cr (VI) rejection performance were investigated, respectively. Moreover, the Q-MPVD membrane shows an excellent separation stability over a wide pH range, indicating its application perspective in engineering process. In summary, this work provided a positively charged membrane with high-efficiency performance for treating practical trace Cr (VI)-containing industrial wastewater.
Enhanced synergistic removal of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) with multifunctional biomass hydrogel from strong-acid media

Abstract:Simultaneous recovery of heavy metal ions (HMIs) such as Cu(II) and Cr(VI) from strong-acid media was a great challenge due to the inhibition of protons. Herein, a novel biomass hydrogel (CMC/PEI-PD) containing various groups (bis-picolylamine, amino, and hydroxyl groups) was newly prepared by a facile two-step process. The static experiments relating pH, kinetics and isothermal co-adsorption confirmed the synergistic effect towards Cu(II) and Cr(VI) consistently. Specifically, the adsorption capacities of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) at pH 2.0 increased by 23.73% and 40.18% in comparison with the single systems. Moreover, coexistence of inorganic anions and cations could further increase the adsorption of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) by 59.90% and 43.39%, respectively. At the same time, the adsorption and desorption ratios for both HMIs remained stable. The superior performance came from the two dominant mechanisms of co-removal. On the one hand, Cu(II) chelated by bis-picolylamine group attracted Cr(VI) in the form of cation bridge, thus promoting Cr(VI) adsorption. On the other hand, the protonated amine group attracted Cr(VI) by electrostatic interaction and weakened the inter-cationic repulsion by electrostatic shielding, thus promoting Cu(II) adsorption. In addition, the dynamic column experiment towards simulated acidic electroplating wastewater involving Cu(II)-Cr(VI)-Ni(II) certified the high efficiency and feasibility of the co-removal. Therefore, CMC/PEI-PD owned great potential in the separation of typical HMIs even directly from strong-acid media.

Abstract:A novel polyacrylic acid/carboxylated nanocellulose fiber/polyethylene glycol hydrogel loaded with nano-ZnO (ZnO-PAA/CNF/PEG: GH-2 (wt(ZnO)% = 12% and wt(PEG)% = 16%)) was synthesized to remove Cr(VI) from wastewater by adsorption synergistic photocatalytic reduction. The effects of ZnO content, PEG content and pH on the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) were investigated. The removal performance and mechanism of Cr(VI) by hydrogels were systematically studied by various techniques. The results showed that when the initial pH = 2, the initial concentration of Cr(VI) = 20 mg/L, the hydrogel dose = 0.5 g/L, and Irradiation power of mercury lamp was 500 W, the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) was 97.22% (dark adsorption for 60 min and photocatalysis for 50 min). The addition of PEG greatly reduced the agglomeration of nano-ZnO in GH-2 and facilitated the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The adsorption process of Cr(VI) by GH-2 accords with pseudo-second-order kinetics. The photocatalytic process conforms to the pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by GH-2 was still as high as 87.99% after 5 cycles. The removal mechanism of Cr(VI) was mainly through electrostatic attraction, chemical adsorption and photocatalytic reduction. This study provides a feasible method for the synthesis of hydrogel materials with excellent adsorption synergistic photocatalytic performance for the treatment of Cr(VI)-containing wastewater.

Abstract:Efficient removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution in both batch and continuous adsorption modes by a cationic hydrogel microsphere (CHMS) adsorbent prepared by inverse suspension polymerization and freeze‐drying. Herein, a cationic hydrogel microsphere (CHMS) was prepared by inverse suspension polymerization and freeze‐drying and was applied to the adsorptive removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from aqueous solution. Morphological characterization shows that there are lots of folds and pores on the surface of CHMS with a unique petal‐like appearance. According to the chemical structure analysis, CHMS contains plenty of functional groups such as amine and hydroxyl groups. These features give CHMS a larger specific surface area, faster adsorption rate, and higher adsorption capacity than the conventional cationic hydrogel microparticle (CHMP) adsorbent. The adsorption of Cr(VI) in water by CHMS is mainly based on the combination of electrostatic adsorption and redox reaction, with the electrostatic interaction between the protonated amine and Cr(VI) serving as the predominant adsorption mechanism. Experimental results reveal that CHMS can efficiently remove Cr(VI) from simulated wastewater in both batch and continuous adsorption modes, which is primarily due to its distinctive surface morphology and rich functional groups. Furthermore, the common coexisting metal ions in Cr(VI)‐containing wastewater have no substantial negative influence on the adsorption. Therefore, it can be concluded that CHMS has a promising application prospect in the treatment of Cr(VI)‐containing wastewater.

Abstract:Mechanically robust and macro-porous hydrogels are urgently required for the dynamic removal of heavy metals in wastewater purification field. Herein, a novel microfibrillated cellulose/polyethyleneimine hydrogel (MFC/PEI-CD) with high compressibility and macro-porous structures was fabricated via the synergy of cryogelation and double-network for Cr(VI) adsorption from wastewater. MFCs were pre-cross-linked by bis(vinyl sulfonyl)methane (BVSM) and then formed double-network hydrogels with PEIs and glutaraldehyde below freezing. The SEM showed that the MFC/PEI-CD possessed interconnected macropores with an average pore diameter of 52 μm. Mechanical tests indicated a high compressive stress of 116.4 kPa at 80 % strain, which was 4 times higher than the corresponding MFC/PEI with a single-network. The Cr(VI) adsorption performance of MFC/PEI-CDs was systematically investigated under different parameters. Kinetic studies indicated that the adsorption process was well described by the pseudo-second-order model. Isothermal adsorption behaviors accorded well with Langmuir model with the maximum adsorption capacity of 545.1 mg/g, which was superior to most adsorption materials. More importantly, the MFC/PEI-CD was applied to dynamically adsorb Cr(VI) with the treatment volume of 2070 mL/g. Therefore, this work demonstrates that the synergy of cryogelation and double-network is a novel method for preparing macro-porous and robust materials with promising heavy metal removal from wastewater.

Abstract:An imidazolium salt-based hydrogel with hyperbranched topology (hbGel-PEG-TTIm+Br6−) was proposed for efficient adsorption towards anionic hexavalent chromium ions (Cr(VI)). For the purpose, a bromo-terminated A3 type monomer and a imidazole-terminated B3 type monomer were firstly synthesized via O-esterification and Michael addition, respectively. Then, hbGel-PEG-TTIm+Br6− was obtained by the one-pot step polymerization of “A3 + B3” approach via N-alkylation reaction. The chemical structure and morphology of the as-prepared hydrogel were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and scanning electron microscope. The cross-linking network structure was calculated according to the Flory–Rehner equilibrium swelling equation. The effects of solution pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time and initial Cr(VI) concentration on the adsorption performance were also investigated, and the maximum adsorption capacity could reach ~ 238 mg g−1. In addition, the adsorption process of Cr(VI) on hbGel-PEG-TTIm+Br6− was well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the adsorption equilibrium data fitted with Langmuir isotherm model better than Freundlich isotherm model. This novel hydrogel with hyperbranched topology can potentially be applied in the treatment of wastewater containing Cr(VI).

Abstract:A lignosulfonate/chitosan–graphene oxide hydrogel (LCGH) composite was successfully synthesized to effectively remove Cr(VI) from wastewater. The physical–chemical properties of the prepared LCGH was characterized by SEM, FT-IR, XRD, XPS, and TGA. The results showed that LCGH had an cross-linked three-dimensional porous network structure that was conducive to Cr(VI) adsorption, resulting in a high Cr(VI) adsorption capacity (564.2 mg/g). Thermodynamic analysis showed that Cr(VI) adsorption on LCGH was spontaneous endothermic and fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models. The reaction mechanisms for Cr(VI) removal were hydrogen bond, electrostatic attraction, and π-π interaction. LCGH demonstrated good reproducibility and its adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) could still maintained at 85.4% after 5 cycles of regeneration. The biosorbent LCGH was a low-cost and eco-friendly material, which has a good prospect for Cr(VI) wastewater removal.

Abstract:Cellulose hydrogel coated nanometer zero-valent iron intercalated montmorillonite (CH-MMT-nFe0) was innovatively designed and fabricated, and applied for the removal of Cr(VI). The composite was characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The addition of MMT and CH improved the dispersity, oxidation resistance and stability of nFe0, and the removal rate of Cr(VI) was up to 98%. At the same time, the interlayer limit of montmorillonite reduced the particle size of nFe0 and increased the activity of nFe0. The formation of “micro reactor” between montmorillonite and iron surface promoted the adsorption and degradation of Cr(VI). Hydrogels had good mesoporous network structure and functional groups such as amides and carboxylic acids. They provided. additional active sites and promoted mass transfer. The multiple interaction mechanisms of CH– MMT-nFe0 on Cr(VI), such as adsorption, reduction and co-precipitation were realized. The material was a potential Cr(VI) polluted wastewater remediation material.

Elimination of Chromium(VI) and Vanadium(V) from Waters by Carboxymethylcellulose-Stabilized Amorphous Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron

Abstract:Oxyanions including common phosphates, sulfates, carbonates, hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), and pentavalent vanadium (V(V)) occur as contaminants in aquifers. Here, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC)-modified amorphous nano zero-valent iron (CMC-AnZVI) was synthesized by liquid-phase reduction and evaluated as a potential aquifer treatment material for Cr(VI) and V(V) removal. The application rate of CMC did not change the crystallinity but affected the reactivity of the material. Furthermore, CMC-AnZVI showed high efficiency and capacity to eliminate Cr(VI) and V(V) due to its distinctive crystal structure and nano size. At pH 7.0 ± 0.2, the Cr(VI) and V(V) elimination rate constants were up to 1.77 × 10−2 min−1 and 1.67 × 10−1 min−1, respectively. In addition, CMC-AnZVI exhibited strong sequestration ability over the wide pH range of 3–11. Langmuir fitted the reaction of CMC-AnZVI and the removal capacities of Cr(VI) and V(V) were 132.8 and 269.5 mg g−1, respectively. The main Cr(VI) elimination mechanism of CMC-AnZVI was reduction and that of V(V) was rapid inner-sphere surface complexation. Consequently, the removal of V(V) was sensitive to Cr(VI) due to the strong oxidation capacity of Cr(VI) and the secondary minerals (FeCr2O4 and Cr(OH)3) created in the reaction covered the active sites. CMC-AnZVI is proposed as an efficient material for the removal of Cr(VI) and V(V) and the interrelationships between oxyanions during elimination require further study.
Cu–Fe embedded cross-linked 3D hydrogel for enhanced reductive removal of Cr(VI): Characterization, performance, and mechanisms

Abstract:<p>Porous hydrogel, as a high-efficiency adsorbent for heavy metals, suffers the drawbacks of the use of expensive and toxic reagents during the process of preparation, further limiting its application ranges. Besides, the heavy metals couldn't be transformed into nontoxic species, which leads to the environmental pollution risk. Herein, a three-dimensionally (3D) structured Cu–Fe embedded cross-linked cellulose hydrogel (nFeCu-CH) was innovatively fabricated by a novel self-assembly and in-situ reduction method, which exhibited exceptionally enhanced adsorption-reduction property towards Cr(VI) wastewater. The results of degradation experiment exhibited that the removal reaction followed Langmuir-Hinshelwood first order kinetic model and the degradation rate constant decreased with solution pH and initial Cr(VI) concentration, while increased with nFeCu-CH dosage and temperature. Regeneration studies demonstrated that more than 88% of Cr(VI) was removed by nFeCu-CH even after five times of cycling. nFeCu-CH exhibited excellent reductive activity, which had a close connection with the superiority of 3D crosslinked architectures and bimetallic synergistic effect. And 97.1% of Cr(VI) could be removed when nFeCu-CH dosage was 9.5 g/L, pH was 5, initial concentration of Cr(VI) was 20 mg/L and temperature was 303 K. Combined with cellulose hydrogel not only could provide additional active sites, but also could restrain the crystallite growth and agglomeration of nano-metallic particles, leading to the promotion of Cr(VI) removal. In addition, coating with Cu facilitated the generation and transformation of electrons according to the continuous redox cycles of Fe(III)/Fe(II) and Cu(II)/Cu(I), leading to the further improvement of the reductivity of nFeCu-CH. Multiple interaction mechanisms including adsorption, reduction and co-precipitation between nFeCu-CH and Cr(VI) were realized. The current work suggested that nFeCu-CH with highly reactive sites, excellent stability and recyclability was considered as an potential material for remediation of Cr(VI) contaminated wastewater.</p>

Abstract:Elevated chromium(VI) (Cr(IV)) concentrations in drinking water or ground water can pose a public health concern. In this study, layered double hydroxides-isethionate (LDH-ise) assisted covalent and electrostatic co-crosslinked cationic hydrogel (CH-LDH-ise) was prepared as a potential adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solution. The scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction results indicated that the LDH-ise sheets were exfoliated and crosslinked with the 3-(Acryloylamino) propyltrimethylaminium chloride (APTMACL) polymer chains. The adsorption of Cr(VI) onto the CH-LDH-ise was highly pH-dependent, and the removal efficiency by CH-LDH-ise composites was much higher than the CH (no crosslinker). The adsorption kinetic followed a pseudo-second-order, and reached equilibrium within 2 h. The corresponding maximum Cr(VI) adsorption capacity of CH-LDH-ise was 408.4 mg/g at the equilibrium concentration of 364.4 mg/L. The enhanced adsorption of Cr(VI) was also achieved in the presence of competing anions (including Cl−, NO3−, SO42−, HCO3−, SiO44−, and HA). Moreover, the in situ regeneration/recycle results implied the column adsorption capacity of CH-LDH-ise was 2250 bed volumes as the concentration of Cr(VI) decreased from 2.5 mg/L to 0.1 mg/L (The US drinking water standard for total chromium) at empty bed contact time = 6 min, and slightly decreased in the second recycle. The combination analysis of in situ Fourier transform infrared, in situ Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectra, and electron paramagnetic resonance revealed that the Cr(VI) capture mechanism was dominated by the electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding effect - the sources of the –N+(CH3)3 and –NH groups in CH-LDH-ise, respectively.

Abstract:Highly efficiently removing hazardous heavy metal ions from water is very important from a viewpoint of maintaining the sustainable development of ecological environment. In this work, a novel adsorbent based on the cellulose acetate (CA) was developed, which was fabricated through the blend electrospinning of CA and titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles, surface modification by polydopamine (PDA) and then grafted by polyethyleneimine (PEI). The composite CA/TiO 2 electrospun fibers exhibit the porous structure, while the surface modification by PDA-assisted PEI grafting has no apparent effect on morphology of the electrospun fibers. The CA/TiO 2 @ composite fibers show the large number of amine groups, and the surface of the fibers can be positively charged in the acidic solution. Adsorption measurements show that the fibrous membrane samples exhibit excellent adsorption ability toward Cr(VI), and the maximum adsorption capacity is as high as 357.1 mg g -1 at solution pH value of 2, solution temperature of 25 °C. Specifically, about 72.1% Cr(VI) can be directly reduced to harmless Cr(III) during the adsorption measurement, which is much higher than those of the almost adsorbents reported in literatures. The excellent adsorption/reduction ability endows the fibrous membranes with great potential application in removing highly hazardous Cr(VI) from wastewater.

Cyclodextrin functionalized 3D-graphene for the removal of Cr(VI) with the easy and rapid separation strategy

Abstract:As a useful heavy metal ion, chromium has seen its applications in various fields. While it is also a toxic contaminant in water and may cause serious threats to the environment and human health. To develop a novel material with good adsorption capacity and easy solid-liquid separation strategy was necessary and significant. In this paper, the β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) functionalized three-dimensional structured graphene foam (CDGF) was successfully synthesized with the facile and one-step hydrothermal method. The SEM, BET, XRD, FT-IR and XPS analysis were carried out and the results confirmed the successfully grafting of β-CD onto GF. The batch adsorption of Cr(VI) was also taken out and the CDGF possessed good selectivity compared with other metal ions at pH = 3. The adsorption capacity reduced gradually as the initial pH of the Cr(VI) solution grew higher, which was because the anionic species of Cr(VI) were partial to the positively charged surface of CDGF. The easy separation strategy of the CDGF was also demonstrated and the CDGF could be taken out easily with a tweezer after the adsorption of Cr(VI), which significantly simplified the separation procedure and reduced time. By comparing the FT-IR and XPD analysis results, the adsorption mechanism was explored and the hydroxyl groups on CDGF played the main role in the adsorption process. This work brings a novel material for the adsorption of Cr(VI) from water and provides an innovative direction for the easy and fast solid-liquid separation strategy in the adsorption and other application fields.
Synthesis of cationic biomass lignosulfonate hydrogel for the efficient adsorption of Cr(VI) in wastewater with low pH

Abstract:In the present study, we synthesized a cationic lignosulfonate hydrogel (LS-g-P (AM-co-DAC)) by grafting acrylamide (AM) and acryloxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DAC) onto sodium lignosulfonate (LS) via free radical copolymerization. The solution pH, contact time, initial concentration, and temperature were comprehensively investigated through the static adsorption method for the adsorption behaviours of Cr(VI) by the hydrogel. The experimental results show that the best conditions were a temperature of 30°C, a dosage of 0.1 g, pH = 3, a concentration of 50 mg / L, and contact time = 2 h with removal efficiencies of above 70% and adsorption capacity of 18.14 mg·g-1. The adsorption process followed the Langmuir isothermal model, indicating monolayer adsorption, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 58.86 mg·g-1. Adsorption kinetics results show that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model dominated the adsorption process, and the adsorption activation energy was 5.489 kJ·mol-1. In addition, the adsorption involved spontaneous exothermic and entropy reduction. The combination of FT-IR, SEM, and XRD was used to characterize the structure and properties of the prepared hydrogel, and the adsorption mechanism was the result of electrostatic attraction, physical and chemical adsorption, and hydrogen bond. The hydrogel has good regenerative properties after desorption. Overall, this work synthesized an environmentally friendly biomass lignin-based hydrogel, which can be used as an adsorbent for the treatment of anionic pollutants, and explored a new method for the high-value utilization of industrial lignin.HighlightsNovel cationic lignosulfonate hydrogel (LS-g-P (AM-co-DAC)) was synthesized by a free radical method.SEM and XRD results confirmed the surface of the obtained hydrogel shows a 3D network structure and does not have a crystal structure.LS-g-P (AM-co-DAC) hydrogel adsorbent can selectively adsorb Cr6+ at pH 3.0.The adsorption conditions and the adsorption mechanism were studied in detail.Electrostatic interaction plays a key role in the adsorption of Cr6+.
The hyper-crosslinked aniline polymer@MOFs hybrid materials reinforced with active ionic sites for efficient and fast Cr(VI) removal

Abstract:The adsorption of toxic metal ions by composite materials of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted significant attention in recent years. In this work, a series of hybrid materials HPAN@M−x consisting of protonated hyper-crosslinked aniline polymer (HPAN) and MOFs were synthesized via the Friedel-Crafts reaction between aniline and dimethoxymethane in the presence of MIL-101(Cr), followed by protonation with hydrogen bromide. These hybrid materials exhibited enhanced adsorption rate and capacity for Cr(VI) ions compared to both individual MIL-101(Cr) and HPAN. The effects of the ratio of aniline to MIL-101(Cr), solution pH, adsorption temperature, impurity ions on the removal of Cr(VI) ions were systematically investigated. Notably, HPAN@M−b not only achieved an adsorption capacity up to 290.9 mg·g −1 in 7 min but also exhibited excellent cycling stability by maintaining a high Cr(VI) removal efficiency of 95.6 % after five cycles. The enhanced adsorption performance is attributed to the synergistic effect between MIL-101(Cr) and HPAN. Mechanism studies indicated that the removal for Cr(VI) ions involved a combination of ion exchange and electrostatic adsorption processes. Additionally, the desorbed Cr(VI) ions were transformed into added-value barium chromate (BaCrO 4 ) precipitates, allowing for resource utilization of Cr(VI) ions. This study represents a significant advancement towards developing MOFs-based hybrid materials for practical treatment of chromium-containing wastewater.

Abstract:Competition for electrons from dissolved oxygen and secondary passivation resulting from the deposition of FeCr hydroxide are two challenges that impede the removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) with zero-valent iron (ZVI). In this study, we fabricated micron-sized zero-valent iron modified with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-ZVI) via a mechanical ball milling process and demonstrated its improved performance up to eight times for Cr(VI) removal. Owing to the CMC protective film, the inhibition of dissolved oxygen for Cr(VI) removal, aging of ZVI in air, and secondary passivation of ZVI by the deposition of FeCr hydroxides were all inhibited. Even after a week of continuous aging, the CMC-ZVI maintained a stable Cr(VI) removal efficiency of over 50%. The excellent hydrophilicity of CMC enhanced the interaction of CMC-ZVI with water and Cr(VI), thus improving its capacity for Cr(VI) removal. Furthermore, CMC-ZVI not only proficiently reduced and completely removed the high-mobility Cr(VI) from actual electroplating effluent, but also effectively alleviated the inhibition of Cr(VI) removal via CMC-ZVI by aeration and air aging. The efficiency of CMC-ZVI in removing Cr(VI) from actual electroplating effluent was improved by over 41 times compared to pristine ZVI. This advantage has the potential to make the storage and transportation of ZVI more affordable and convenient and increases its potential for practical applications. This study provides an efficient Cr(VI) removal strategy using ZVI for environmental remediation and a strategy for the production of highly reactive, aging-resistant, easily stored, and transported zero-valent iron with the potential for practical applications.

Abstract:As one of the hazardous heavy metal ion pollutants, Cr(VI) has attracted much attention in the sewage treatment research field due to its wide distribution range and serious toxicity. In this paper, cellulose fibers were prepared by wet spinning and followed by freeze drying, resulting in large porosity. Subsequently, in-depth sulfhydryl modification was applied with cellulose fibers for efficient and rapid adsorption of Cr(VI). The maximum adsorption capacity of sulfhydryl-modified cellulose fibers to Cr(VI) can reach 120.60 mg g−1, the adsorption equilibrium can be achieved within 300 s, and its adsorption rate can reach 0.319 mg g−1 s−1. The results show that the in-depth sulfhydryl-modified cellulose fibers perform excellent adsorption capacity for chromium, and are also available for other heavy metal ions. At the same time, the low cost and environmentally friendly property of the as-synthesized material also demonstrate its potential for practical usage for the treatment of heavy metal ion pollution in waste water.

Abstract:The reduction and sequestration of toxic Cr(VI) via a one-step process in an aqueous solution is critical to eliminate its environmental risk. In this study, amine functionalized cellulose-based aerogel beads (CGP) was developed for simultaneous and efficient adsorption- reduction- sequestration of Cr(VI). CGP showed a maximum Cr(VI) adsorption capacity of 386.40 mg/g at 25 °C due to its strong electrostatic attraction towards Cr(VI). The simultaneous Cr(VI) adsorption- reduction- sequestration performance of CGP over a wide Cr(VI) concentration range was examined. The mechanism was investigated in-depth via the analysis of adsorption kinetics, XPS spectra, and FTIR spectra. Moreover, the Cr immobilization stability of CGP after adsorption was evaluated in simulated neutral, acidic, and alkaline conditions. The effect of pH, temperature, ionic strength and the presence of interfering ions on CGP adsorption performance were investigated by batch adsorption experiments. Fixed-bed column adsorption study was performed to explore the application potential of CGP beads in a wastewater treatment process.

Background: Biomass materials are currently attracting more research interests as pollutant adsorbent attributed to rich sources, low cost, non-toxicity, biodegradability and easy modification. Methods: Herein, a glucose-based carbon material (GC) was fabricated via hydrothermal method and formed pores materials by activation using KOH. Then the amino modified magnetic glucose-based carbon composite (MAGC) was prepared by the co-precipitation method and followed the simple cross-linking reaction. Significant Findings: MAGC had a high nitrogen content of 10.89 wt.% with many active adsorption sites and the magnetic separation process of MAGC was completed within 25 s. The adsorption experiments indicated the superior adsorption capacity of MAGC for water pollutants (several heavy metal ions and anionic dyes). Cr(VI) was selected as the model pollutant, the maximum adsorption capacity (Q max ) of MAGC was 537.63 mg g −1 at pH 2 and 25 °C, which followed the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model. Low concentration (1 mg L −1 ) cyclic adsorption demonstrated that after 40 cycles without regeneration, the Cr(VI) concentration remained the below 0.05 mg L −1 in 30 min, which was the safe level of drinking water specified by WHO. This design of biomass-based carbon composites may provide a promising absorbent for efficient removal of water pollutants. Abstract:Herein, a pH-independent interpenetrating polymeric networks (Fe-SA-C) were fabricated from graphitic biochar (BC) and iron-alginate hydrogel (Fe-SA) for removal of Cr(VI) and Pb(II) in aqueous solution. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope (SEM) results demonstrated that graphitic BC interpenetration increased surface porosity and distorted surfaces of Fe-SA, which boosted availability of hydroxyl (-OH) group. Fe3+ as a cross-linking agent of the alginate endowed Fe-SA-C with positive surfaces (positive zeta potential) and excellent pH buffering capacity, while excessive Fe3+ was soldered on Fe-SA-C matrix as FeO(OH) and Fe2O3. Cr(VI) removal at pH of 3 by Fe-SA-C (20.3 mg g-1) were 30.3% and 410.6% greater than that by Fe-SA and BC, respectively. Fe-SA-C exhibited minor pH dependence over pH range of 2-7 towards Cr(VI) retention. Greater zeta potential of Fe-SA-C over Fe-SA conferred a better electrostatic attraction with Cr(VI). FTIR and XPS of spent sorbents confirmed the reduction accounted for 98.5% for Cr(VI) removal mainly due to participation of -OH. Cr(VI) reduction was further favored by conductive carbon matrix in Fe-SA-C, as evidenced by more negative Tafel corrosion potential. Reductively formed Cr(III) was subsequently complexed with carboxylic groups originating from oxidation of -OH. Thus, Cr(VI) removal invoked electrostatic attraction, reduction, and surface complexation mechanisms. Pb(II) removal with excellent pH independence was mainly ascribed to surface complexation and possible precipitation. Thus, the functionalized, conductive, and positively-charged Fe-SA-C extended its applicability for Cr(VI) and Pb(II) removal from aqueous solutions in a wide pH range. This research could expand the application of hydrogel materials for removal of both cationic and anionic heavy metals in solutions over an extended pH range.
