Abstract:We propose a flexible method for multiple feature frequencies-based bridge T hardware pre-equalizer that can better match the channel of an LED-based visible light communication (VLC) system and dramatically increase the system capacity. Based on this method, three kinds of equalizers are fabricated with the same maximum attenuation but different envelopes of frequency response. The performance of the three equalizers is experimentally compared in an underwater VLC system. The results show that the different shapes of the pre equalizer can significantly impact the system SNR as well as the system capacity. By utilizing one of the optimally designed equalizers, an overall data rate of 3.075 Gb/s underwater VLC system can be achieved based on 64 QAM discrete multitone modulation over 1.2-m water channel. The measured bit error rate is under the hard decision-forward error correction threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3). (C) 2019 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).

Abstract:Visible light communication(VLC) is an emerging wireless optical communication technology, which combines illumination and communication. So it has a broad application prospect that makes it a research hotspot in recent years. The main challenge of VLC’s development is the limited modulation bandwidth of LED, which leads to a limited transmission rate of the VLC system. To solve this problem, hardware pre-equalization circuit is used in the VLC system. We design and use single and cascaded bridged-T amplitude equalizers. By combining the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) technology, the VLC system’s modulation bandwidth and transmission rate can be improved efficiently.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) technology is considered to be an attractive solution for future wireless indoor multimedia communication. To reduce the peak-to-average power ratio, single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) with time domain asymmetrical clipping is applied for the downlink multi-user VLC system. An improved frequency-domain decision feedback equalizer (FD-DFE) structure is proposed for the SC-FDMA-based VLC system in this letter. Different kinds of subcarrier distributions are considered in the analyses and simulations. Thanks to the clipping noise information on the even subcarriers, which can reduce the decision error, the proposed algorithm provides a lower bit error rate and better transmission performance compared with traditional schemes.

Abstract:In visible light communication (VLC) system, the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technique has been widely used to achieve a high data rate transmission. However, OFDM will cause high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) in the VLC system. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a new interleaved Discrete Fourier Transform Spread Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) method. We compare the interleaved DFT-S technique to other PAPR reduction techniques, such as Clipping OFDM and conventional DFT-S. The experimental results show that interleaved DFT-S achieve FEC threshold for an overall 2.0Gb/s 32QAM signal over the 1.05m transmission. In addition, interleaved DFT-S presents significant PAPR reduction, low complexity and optimal BER performance, when compared to other techniques.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) using high power light emitting diodes (LEDs) for high speed communication becomes a new area which draws increasing attention. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-speed VLC system based on Discrete Fourier Transform Spread Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) for the first time. We change the value of different factors and compare the performance of the system in order to find the effect of different factors. The experimental results show that the bit error rate (BER) for an overall 1.2Gb/s 64QAM and 32QAM signal over 40 cm transmission can be under the 7% forward error correction (FEC) limit of 3.8×10 -3 . Meanwhile, we clearly demonstrate the benefit and feasibility of DFT-S OFDM modulation format for the high speed VLC system.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a distributed digital pre-equalization (DPE) technique for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based bandlimited visible light communication (VLC) systems. In the VLC system applying distributed DPE, the subcarriers are divided into two bands, where the bandwidth and the power of each band can be flexibly adjusted to maximize the achievable data rate of the system. Hence, distributed DPE exhibits much higher tolerance against light-emitting diode (LED) nonlinearity than conventional centralized DPE. Experimental results verify the superiority of distributed DPE for OFDM-based bandlimited VLC systems. More specifically, a data rate of 976.6 Mbit/s is achieved by using distributed DPE, which corresponds to an achievable rate improvement of 25% in comparison to centralized DPE.

Abstract:Modulation bandwidth limitation is one of the major drawbacks in light-emitting diode (LED)-based visible light communication (VLC) systems. Various advanced physical-layer modulation formats with digital/analog pre-equalization or adaptive modulation techniques are usually employed to improve the transmission rate of VLC systems. In this Letter, we use a radio frequency (RF) digital-to-analog converter (DAC) to directly realize signal pre-equalization without additional digital or analog signal processing. In addition, low-complexity real-valued precoding techniques are applied to reduce the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) and equalize the subcarrier signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The proposed hybrid scheme is experimentally investigated in a spectral-efficient filter bank multi-carrier (FBMC)-based VLC transmission system. The results exhibit that the PAPR can be reduced by more than 3 dB at the complementary cumulative distribution function of 1 × 10-4 with the real-valued precoding techniques. By using the proposed hybrid scheme, the modulation bandwidth can be increased to 515 MHz for 16QAM-FBMC with a bit error rate below 3.8 × 10-3 after 2.3-m free-space transmission. The net bit rate is improved by more than 45% compared with the conventional FBMC-VLC.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing/offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM/OQAM) has the advantage of high spectral efficiency due to non-requirement of cyclic prefix (CP) and guard band. However, the high direct current (DC) used in OFDM/OQAM is power inefficient for visible light communication (VLC). In this letter, an enhanced OFDM/OQAM (EO-OFDM/OQAM) scheme is proposed for VLC, which is inspired by the idea of the pulse-amplitude-modulation based hybrid optical OFDM (PHO-OFDM) scheme. In this system, the half of subcarriers of the normal branch carry useful data while the remaining subcarriers are selected to carry negative clipping noise instead of useful data for improving the power efficiency, and a flexible power allocation method is introduced. The simulation results show that compared with the PHO-OFDM, the proposed scheme has a better bit error rate (BER) performance under the same average bit rate without additional operations of interference regeneration and cancellation.

Abstract:The filtered‐orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (F‐OFDM) scheme has gained attention as a promising solution in the field of visible light communication (VLC) systems. One crucial aspect in VLC is the conversion of the complex F‐OFDM signal into a real signal that corresponds with direct detection and intensity modulation. Traditionally, achieving a real F‐OFDM signal has involved imposing Hermitian symmetry (HS) on the samples of the Inverse Fast Fourier transform (IFFT), which requires 2N‐point IFFT and obtains an N‐point FFT, thus adding complexity. In this study, a novel approach is presented and implemented, aiming to enhance spectral efficiency and reduce system complexity by generating a real F‐OFDM signal without relying on HS. This approach is then compared with HS‐free (HSF)‐OFDM, direct current biased optical OFDM, and asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM. The suggested method offers a remarkable improvement of ~50% in the required IFFT/FFT volume. Consequently, this method reduces hardware complexity and power usage compared with the traditional F‐OFDM method. Moreover, regarding error rates, the proposed method demonstrates better spectral efficiency than HSF‐OFDM.

Demonstration of Dfts-Ofdm and Equalization Technology Using in Vlc Communication on the Headset Port of Android Device

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) is one of the hottest research directions in wireless communication. It is safe, fast and free of electromagnetic interference. We carry out the visible light communication using DFTS-OFDM modulation mode through the headset port to and take equalization technique to compensate the channel. In this paper, we first test the feasibility of the DFTS-OFDM modulated VLC system by analyzing the constellation and the transmission error rate via the headset interface of the smartphone. Then we change the peak value of the signal generated by the AWG as well as the static current to find the best working point. We tested the effect of changing the up-sample number on the BER performance of the communication system, and compared the BER performance of 16QAM and 8QAM modulation in different equalization method. We also do experiment to find how distance affect the performance of the communication and the maximum communication rate that can be achieved. We successfully demonstrated a visible light communication system detected by a headset port of a smart phone for a 32QAM DFTS-OFDM modulated signal of 27.5kb/s over a 3-meter free space transmission. The light source is traditional phosphorescent white LED. This result, as far as we know, is the highest data rate of VLC system via headset port detection.
Low-Complexity Frequency Domain Equalization over Fast Fading Channels

Abstract:Wireless communications over fast fading channels are challenging, requiring either frequent channel tracking or complicated signaling schemes such as orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation. In this paper, we propose low-complexity frequency domain equalizations to combat fast fading, based on novel discrete delay-time and frequency-Doppler channel models. Exploiting the circular stripe diagonal nature of the frequency-Doppler channel matrix, we introduce low-complexity frequency domain minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalization for OTFS systems with fully resolvable Doppler spreads. We also demonstrate that the proposed MMSE equalization is applicable to conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and single carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) systems with short signal frames and partially resolvable Doppler spreads. After generalizing the input-output data symbol relationship, we analyze the equalization performance via channel matrix eigenvalue decomposition and derive a closed-form expression for the theoretical bit-error-rate. Simulation results for OTFS, OFDM, and SC-FDE modulations verify that the proposed low-complexity frequency domain equalization methods can effectively exploit the time diversity over fast fading channels. Even with partially resolvable Doppler spread, the conventional SC-FDE can achieve performance close to OTFS, especially in fast fading channels with a dominating line-of-sight path.

Abstract:Visible-light communication (VLC) systems leverage solid-state illumination devices to create high-speed communication links. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been considered for these intensity-modulated/direct-detection (IM/DD) optical channels, however, it suffers from high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). Moreover, the implementation of linear, power-efficient, high-current, wideband drivers is challenging. In this paper, the concept of spatial summing is developed where wideband, high PAPR OFDM signals are partitioned into many low-PAPR narrowband signals that are transmitted from multiple LEDs. The signals from different LEDs are allowed to sum in space before being detected by a conventional OFDM receiver. Spatial optical-OFDM (SO-OFDM) is proposed in which filtered subsets of carriers are emitted by each LED. In addition, low-PAPR optical single-carrier FDMA (OSC-FDMA) is developed where different collections of LEDs act as virtual users in a multiple-access scheme. The different variations of SO-OFDM and OSC-FDMA are compared to conventional DC-biased optical (DCO) OFDM and are shown to achieve lower PAPR and more robustness to LED nonlinearities leading to error rate performance gains at high signal-to-noise ratios.

Abstract:We propose a two-cascaded, constant-resistance, symmetrical bridged-T amplitude equalizer for a high-speed visible light communication(VLC) system. With the pre-equalization circuit, the-3 d B bandwidth of the VLC system can be extended from 12 to 235 MHz using a commercially available phosphorescent white light-emitting diode(LED), a blue filter, and a low-cost PIN photodiode. The data rate is 1.20 Gbit/s, exploiting 16-quadrature amplitude modulation-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing with a 300 MHz modulation bandwidth over50 cm of free-space transmission under the pre-forward error correction limit of 3.8 × 10-3. To our knowledge,this is the highest-3 d B bandwidth and the highest data rate ever achieved by using a pre-equalization circuit and white LED in a VLC system.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been widely studied and adopted in visible-light communication (VLC) systems because of its high spectral efficiency and low-complexity implementation. However, OFDM-based VLC systems suffer from a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), along with the nonlinear transfer characteristics of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In this paper, a subcarrier grouping scheme for an OFDM-based VLC system is proposed. This scheme exploits the property that one LED lamp usually contains multiple independent LED chips. In the proposed scheme, all OFDM signal subcarriers are divided into groups, and each group is transmitted by an individual LED chip while the same receiver structure is maintained. The PAPR is reduced significantly because only some of the subcarriers are located on each LED chip. Hence, the achievable input power can be increased, leading to a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and a lower bit error rate (BER). Simulated and experimental results demonstrate that the BER performance can be improved by over two orders of magnitude. Moreover, an adaptive switching mechanism is also proposed in this paper, in which a subcarrier grouping scheme is employed adaptively when the required input power is high. Simulation results validate that the proposed mechanism can enhance system robustness significantly.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel hybrid time-frequency adaptive equalization algorithm based on a combination of frequency domain equalization (FDE) and decision-directed least mean square (DD-LMS) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in a Nyquist single carrier visible light communication (VLC) system. Adopting this scheme, as well with 512-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (512-QAM) and wavelength multiplexing division (WDM), an aggregate data rate of 4.22-Gb/s is successfully achieved employing a single commercially available red-green-blue (RGB) light emitting diode (LED) with low bandwidth. The measured Q-factors for 3 wavelength channels are all above the Q-limit. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest data rate ever achieved by employing a commercially available RGB-LED.

Abstract:We propose quasi-linear preequalization to be used for high speed visible light communication (VLC) system. Compared with zero-forcing preequalization, this kind of preequalization method is more suitable for a real VLC experimental system with peak power limitation. We carry out simulations and experiments to test the performance of quasi-linear preequalization. With this equalizer, the 3 dB bandwidth of the system can be extended from 17 MHz to 450 MHz. We implement 2.32 Gbit/s phosphorescent white light-emitting diode (LED) VLC transmission over 1 m distance with quasi-linear equalizer, bit and power loading OFDM, differential amplification positive intrinsic negative diode (PIN) receivers, and maximum ratio combining algorithm. To our knowledge, this is the highest transmission data rate based on a phosphorescent white LED VLC system.

Abstract:In this paper, a direct current biased optical orthogonal time frequency space (DCO-OTFS) based full-duplex relay-assisted visible light communication system is proposed to enhance the spectral efficiency of visible light communications (VLC). The DCO-OTFS modulation method is described and the spectral efficiency of the system is analyzed. Simulation results indicate that the proposed method can achieve higher spectrum efficiency and robustness than the traditional direct current biased optical orthogonal frequency division modulation (DCO-OFDM).
