Abstract:Silicon-carbon nanofibers coaxial sponge, with strong mechanical integrity and improved electronic conductivity, is a promising anode structure to apply into commercial high-capacity lithium ion batteries. We characterized the electrochemical and mechanical behaviors of amorphous silicon-coated carbon nanofibers (a-Si/CNFs) with in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that lithiation of the a-Si coating layer occurred from the surface and the a-Si/CNF interface concurrently, and propagated toward the center of the a-Si layer. Such a process leads to a sandwiched Li(x)Si/Si/Li(x)Si structure, indicating fast Li transport through the a-Si/CNF interface. Nanocracks and sponge-like structures developed in the a-Si layer during the lithiation-delithiation cycles. Lithiation of the a-Si layer sealed in the hollow CNF was also observed, but at a much lower speed than the counterpart of the a-Si layer coated on the CNF surface. An analytical solution of the stress field was formulated based on the continuum theory of finite deformation, explaining the experimental observation of longitudinal crack formation and general mechanical degradation mechanism in a-Si/CNF electrode.

Abstract:We report direct observation of an unexpected anisotropic swelling of Si nanowires during lithiation against either a solid electrolyte with a lithium counter-electrode or a liquid electrolyte with a LiCoO(2) counter-electrode. Such anisotropic expansion is attributed to the interfacial processes of accommodating large volumetric strains at the lithiation reaction front that depend sensitively on the crystallographic orientation. This anisotropic swelling results in lithiated Si nanowires with a remarkable dumbbell-shaped cross section, which develops due to plastic flow and an ensuing necking instability that is induced by the tensile hoop stress buildup in the lithiated shell. The plasticity-driven morphological instabilities often lead to fracture in lithiated nanowires, now captured in video. These results provide important insight into the battery degradation mechanisms.
Tuning the Outward to Inward Swelling in Lithiated Silicon Nanotubes Via Surface Oxide Coating

Abstract:Electrochemically induced mechanical degradation hinders the application of Si anodes in advanced lithium-ion batteries. Hollow structures and surface coatings have been often used to mitigate the degradation of Si-based anodes. However, the structural change and degradation mechanism during lithiation/delithiation of hollow Si structures with coatings remain unclear. Here, we combine in situ TEM experiment and chemomechanical modeling to study the electrochemically induced swelling of amorphous-Si (a-Si) nanotubes with different thicknesses of surface SiOx layers. Surprisingly, we find that no inward expansion occurs at the inner surface during lithiation of a-Si nanotubes with native oxides. In contrast, inward expansion can be induced by increasing the thickness of SiOx on the outer surface, thus reducing the overall outward swelling of the lithiated nanotube. Moreover, both the sandwich lithiation mechanism and the two-stage lithiation process in a-Si nanotubes remain unchanged with the increasing thickness of surface coatings. Our chemomechanical modeling reveals the mechanical confinement effects in lithiated a-Si nanotubes with and without SiOx coatings. This work not only provides insights into the degradation of nanotube anodes with surface coatings but also sheds light onto the optimal design of hollow anodes for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) nanostructures are attractive candidates for electrodes for Li-ion batteries because they provide both large specific charging capacity and less constraint on the volume changes that occur during Li charging. Recent experiments show that crystalline Si anodes expand highly anisotropically through the motion of a sharp phase boundary between the crystalline Si core and the lithiated amorphous Si shell. Here, we present a microscopic model to describe the size-dependent fracture of crystalline Si nanopillars (NPs) during lithiation. We derive a traction-separation law based on the plastic growth of voids, which, in turn, is used in a cohesive zone-finite element model. The model allows for both the initiation of cracking and crack growth. The initial size and spacing of the nanovoids, assumed to be responsible for the fracture, together with the computed facture toughness, are chosen to conform to recent experiments which showed the critical diameter of Si NPs to be 300-400 nm. The anisotropy of the expansion is taken into account and that leads naturally to the observed anisotropy of fracture. The computed work of fracture shows good agreement with recent experimental results and it may be possible to use it to describe the failure for other loading and geometries. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Silicon is expected to be a useful anode material in lithium ion batteries for future energy storage applications, because of its high theoretical charge storage density of Li+ ions. However, volume expansion due to lithiation fractures the Si anode material, leading to poor cycle stability of battery operation. The approaches to overcome the problem include using Si nanowires to relieve the stress induced by volume expansion and coating a protective layer on the Si anode to prevent delamination. In this study, we use in-situ scanning electron microscopy to monitor the morphological changes of 90 nm thick pristine Si nanowires and the Si nanowires coated with amorphous TiO2, respectively, during electrochemical lithiation. The results of in-situ observation show that both kinds of Si nanowires exhibit a larger thickness after 10 h lithiation and suffer fracture after 25 h. It is also found that the TiO2 layer is not strong enough to prevent Si nanowires from fracture. Since the TiO2 layer can not be elastically deformed, this surface shell fractures earlier in the lithiation process than pristine Si nanowires. Transformation of the crystalline Si nanowires to an amorphous phase and lithium composition detected in the nanowires support that the observed fracture indeed results from lithiation.

Abstract:Large-scale atomistic simulations were performed to investigate the fracture behaviors of amorphous lithiated silicon. The simulation results revealed that as the lithium concentration increases, there exists a transition in fracture mechanism from intrinsic nanoscale cavitation to extensive shear banding ahead of the crack tip. It is shown that the observed fracture-mechanism transition can be understood from the changing ratio between critical stresses for cavitation and plastic yield under increasing lithium content. Furthermore, we investigated the mechanistic details of cavitation (i.e. growth of nanovoids) in amorphous lithiated silicon using fully three-dimensional atomistic simulations. It was revealed that in a low lithium concentration environment, an initial void grows heterogeneously by merging with neighboring nucleated voids. However, at high lithium concentrations, the initial void continues to grow in a homogeneous mode. These atomistic mechanisms provide a fundamental understanding of how silicon anodes in lithium-ion batteries fracture during lithiation.

Abstract:With its high specific capacity, silicon is a promising anode material for high-energy lithium-ion batteries, but volume expansion and fracture during lithium reaction have prevented implementation. Si nanostructures have shown resistance to fracture during cycling, but the critical effects of nanostructure size and native surface oxide on volume expansion and cycling performance are not understood. Here, we use an ex situ transmission electron microscopy technique to observe the same Si nanowires before and after lithiation and have discovered the impacts of size and surface oxide on volume expansion. For nanowires with native SiO(2), the surface oxide can suppress the volume expansion during lithiation for nanowires with diameters <∼50 nm. Finite element modeling shows that the oxide layer can induce compressive hydrostatic stress that could act to limit the extent of lithiation. The understanding developed herein of how volume expansion and extent of lithiation can depend on nanomaterial structure is important for the improvement of Si-based anodes.
Temperature-Dependent Fracture Resistance of Silicon Nanopillars during Electrochemical Lithiation

Abstract:During the lithation of silicon anodes, the solid-state diffusion of lithium into LixSi follows the Arrhenius law, the resulting morphology and fracture behavior are determined by the silicon anode operation temperature. Here, we reveal the temperature dependence of the lithiation mechanics of crystalline silicon nanopillars (SiNPs) via microscopic observations of the anisotropic growth and fracture behavior. We fabricated 1D SiNP structures with various orientations (⟨100⟩, ⟨110⟩, and ⟨111⟩) as working electrodes and operated them at temperatures ranging from -20 to 40 °C. The lithiation of crystalline silicon at low temperatures exhibited preferential volume expansion along ⟨110⟩ and decreased fracture resistance. Furthermore, low temperatures caused the catastrophic fracture of amorphous silicon after the second lithiation. Our findings demonstrate the importance of silicon anode temperature control to prevent mechanical fracture during the cycle of lithium-ion batteries in harsh environments (e.g., electric vehicles in winter).
Quantum Coherent States and Path Integral Method to Stochastically Determine the Anisotropic Volume Expansion in Lithiated Silicon Nanowires

Abstract:This computational research study will analyze the multi-physics of lithium ion insertion into a silicon nanowire in an attempt to explain the electrochemical kinetics at the nanoscale and quantum level. The electron coherent states and a quantum field version of photon density waves will be the joining theories that will explain the electron-photon interaction within the lithium-silicon lattice structure. These two quantum particles will be responsible for the photon absorption rate of silicon atoms that are hypothesized to be the leading cause of breaking diatomic silicon covalent bonds that ultimately leads to volume expansion. It will be demonstrated through the combination of Maxwell stress tensor, optical amplification and path integrals that a stochastic analyze using a variety of Poisson distributions that the anisotropic expansion rates in the <110>, <111> and <112> orthogonal directions confirms the findings ascertained in previous works made by other research groups. The computational findings presented in this work are similar to those which were discovered experimentally using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and simulation models that used density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD). The refractive index and electric susceptibility parameters of lithiated silicon are interwoven in the first principle theoretical equations and appears frequently throughout this research presentation, which should serve to demonstrate the importance of these parameters in the understanding of this component in lithium ion batteries.

Lattice Bending, Disordering, and Amorphization Induced Plastic Deformation in a SiC Nanowire

Abstract:The plastic deformation features of intrinsic brittle-featured SiC nanowires by high resolution electron microscopy have been investigated. Strong plastic deformation strain fields were observed in a bent SiC nanowire. The achieved localized strain reaches about 1.5%. Localized lattice bending, atomic lattice disordering, and amorphization are contribution factors to achieve the plastic deformation. The projected Si–Si bonding angle distribution on the (110) atomic plane demonstrates the disordering features of the bent SiC nanowire. Buckling is found at the compressive side of the bent SiC nanowire. Growth bending can be achieved through {111} twinning and phase transformation from 3C to 2H.
Molecular Understanding of Electrochemical–Mechanical Responses in Carbon-Coated Silicon Nanotubes during Lithiation

Abstract:Carbon-coated silicon nanotube (SiNT@CNT) anodes show tremendous potential in high-performance lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Unfortunately, to realize the commercial application, it is still required to further optimize the structural design for better durability and safety. Here, the electrochemical and mechanical evolution in lithiated SiNT@CNT nanohybrids are investigated using large-scale atomistic simulations. More importantly, the lithiation responses of SiNW@CNT nanohybrids are also investigated in the same simulation conditions as references. The simulations quantitatively reveal that the inner hole of the SiNT alleviates the compressive stress concentration between a-LixSi and C phases, resulting in the SiNT@CNT having a higher Li capacity and faster lithiation rate than SiNW@CNT. The contact mode significantly regulates the stress distribution at the inner hole surface, further affecting the morphological evolution and structural stability. The inner hole of bare SiNT shows good structural stability due to no stress concentration, while that of concentric SiNT@CNT undergoes dramatic shrinkage due to compressive stress concentration, and that of eccentric SiNT@CNT is deformed due to the mismatch of stress distribution. These findings not only enrich the atomic understanding of the electrochemical–mechanical coupled mechanism in lithiated SiNT@CNT nanohybrids but also provide feasible solutions to optimize the charging strategy and tune the nanostructure of SiNT-based electrode materials.

Abstract:Silicon is considered as a promising anode material for the next-generation lithium-ion battery (LIB) due to its high capacity at nanoscale. However, silicon expands up to 300% during lithiation, which induces high stresses and leads to fractures. To design silicon nanostructures that could minimize fracture, it is important to understand and characterize stress states in the silicon nanostructures during lithiation. Synchrotron X-ray microdiffraction has proven to be effective in revealing insights of mechanical stress and other mechanics considerations in small-scale crystalline structures used in many important technological applications, such as microelectronics, nanotechnology, and energy systems. In the present study, an in situ synchrotron X-ray microdiffraction experiment was conducted to elucidate the mechanical stress states during the first electrochemical cycle of lithiation in single-crystalline silicon nanowires (SiNWs) in an LIB test cell. Morphological changes in the SiNWs at different levels of lithiation were also studied using scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was found from SEM observation that lithiation commenced predominantly at the top surface of SiNWs followed by further progression toward the bottom of the SiNWs gradually. The hydrostatic stress of the crystalline core of the SiNWs at different levels of electrochemical lithiation was determined using the in situ synchrotron X-ray microdiffraction technique. We found that the crystalline core of the SiNWs became highly compressive (up to -325.5 MPa) once lithiation started. This finding helps unravel insights about mechanical stress states in the SiNWs during the electrochemical lithiation, which could potentially pave the path toward the fracture-free design of silicon nanostructure anode materials in the next-generation LIB.

Abstract:Understanding the fracture behavior of one-dimensional (1-D) nanomaterials is critical for their functional device applications and maximizing their service life. At the nanoscale, solid materials’ fracture properties could significantly deviate from their bulk counterparts. Our recent study (Zhang et al. in Sci. Adv. 2(8):e1501382, 2016. 10.1126/sciadv.1501382) showed that silicon (Si) nanowires, one of the most important functional 1-D nanomaterials for nanoelectronics and nano-electro-mechanical systems, demonstrated distinctly different mechanical properties than microscale and bulk Si crystals with the elastic strain up to 10% or even more, approaching their theoretical elastic limit. It is therefore intriguing to understand the fracture behavior of a Si nanowire under such deep ultra-strength, as well as their failure mechanisms. In this work, we will experimentally study the fracture behavior of ultrahigh elastic Si nanowires in situ and quantitatively understand their fracture mechanics with the assist of molecular dynamics simulations. The insights obtained in this nanomechanical study may be of help on the development of robust Si nanowire-based mechatronic devices.

Abstract:Following an explosion of studies of silicon as a negative electrode for Li-ion batteries, the anomalous volumetric changes and fracture of lithiated single Si particles have attracted significant attention in various fields, including mechanics. However, in real batteries, lithiation occurs simultaneously in clusters of Si in a confined medium. Hence, understanding how the individual Si structures interact during lithiation in a closed space is necessary. Here, we demonstrate physical and mechanical interactions of swelling Si structures during lithiation using well-defined Si nanopillar pairs. Ex situ SEM and in situ TEM studies reveal that compressive stresses change the reaction kinetics so that preferential lithiation occurs at free surfaces when the pillars are mechanically clamped. Such mechanical interactions enhance the fracture resistance of lithiated Si by lessening the tensile stress concentrations in Si structures. This study will contribute to improved design of Si structures at the electrode level for high-performance Li-ion batteries.
Lithiation-delithiation cycles of amorphous Si nanowires investigated by molecular dynamics simulations

Abstract:The atomistic mechanisms during lithiation and delithiation of amorphous Si nanowires ($a$-SiNW) have been investigated over cycles by molecular dynamics simulations. First, the Modified Embedded Atom Method (MEAM) potential from Cui et al. [J. Power Sources. 2012, (207) 150] has been further optimized on static (Li$_x$Si alloy phases and point defect energies) and on dynamic properties (Li diffusion) to reproduce the lithiation of small crystalline Si nanowires calculated at the {\it ab initio} level. The lithiation of $a$-SiNW reveals a two-phase process of lithiation with a larger diffusion interface compared to crystalline Si lithiation. Compressive axial stresses are observed in the amorphous Si$_x$Li alloy outer shell. They are easily released thanks to the soft glassy behavior of the amorphous alloy. Conversely, in crystalline SiNW, the larger stress in the narrow crystalline lithiated interface is hardly released and requires a phase transformation to amorphous to operate, which delays the lithiation. The history of the charge-discharge cycles as well as the temperature appear as driving forces for phase transformation from amorphous Li$_x$Si alloy to the more stable crystalline phase counterpart. Our work suggest that a full delithiation could heal the SiNWs to improve the life cycles of Li-ion batteries with Si anode.

Abstract:To develop high-capacity Li-ion batteries, volume expansion and material degradation of Si anodes have been attracting increasing attention. However, the effects of phase structures and geometrical constraints on the failure mechanism of lithiated Si have not been well understood. Considering phase boundaries formed during electrochemical cycles, we conducted molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the failure behaviour and microstructural evolution of single-phase and dual-phase (core–shell) lithiated Si structures when subjected to biaxial tensile stress. During lithiation, lithiated Si structures show a brittle-to-ductile transition. The brittle fracture is associated with nanoscale cavitation and void propagation. The ductility of lithiated Si structures increases with Li content due to the rearrangement of Li atoms. Compared with single-phase lithiated Si, dual-phase structures tend to fracture owing to inhomogeneous deformation and nanoscale cavitation. On the other hand, the ductility of lithiated Si decreases during delithiation, especially in dual-phase structures. This work provides a better understanding of the structure–property relationship of lithiated Si in charging-discharging cycles and strategies to improve the electrochemical performance of Si-based electrodes.

Abstract:A microfabricated capillary electrophoresis device for velocity measurements of flowing particles is presented. It consists of a 1 x 128 planar waveguide beam splitter monolithically integrated with an electrically insulated fluidic channel network for fluorescence excitation at multiple points. Stray light rejection structures are included in order to suppress unwanted light between the detection regions. The emission pattern of particles passing the detection region was collected by a photomultiplier tube that was placed in close proximity to the channel, thereby avoiding the use of transfer optics. The integrated planar waveguide beam splitter was, furthermore, permanently connected to the light source by a glued-on optical fiber, to achieve a robust and alignment-free operation of the system. The velocity was measured using a Fourier transformation with a Shah function, since the response of the light array was designed to approximate a square profile. Deviations from this response were observed as a result of the multimode nature of the integrated waveguides.

Using atomistic simulations, this work investigated the deformation behavior of copper nanowire under coupled tension–torsion loading. A transition in both yielding pattern and dislocation pattern were observed with varying torsion/tension strain ratios. Specifically, increasing the torsion/tension strain ratio (with larger torsional strain) triggered the nucleation of different partial dislocations in the slip system. At low torsion/tension strain ratios, plastic deformation of the nanowire was dominated by stacking faults with trailing partial dislocations pinned at the surface, shifting to two partial dislocations with stacking faults as the strain ratio increases. More interestingly, the NW under tension-dominated loading exhibited a stacking fault structure after yielding, whereas torsion-dominated loading resulted in a three-dimensional dislocation network within the structure. This work thus suggests that the deformation behavior of the NW varies depending on the coupled mechanical loading, which could be beneficial for various engineering applications.
Atomistic Treatment of Periodic Gold Nanowire Array Nanofasteners under Shear Loading

Abstract:Comprehensive molecular dynamics simulations are conducted to unravel the mechanics and mechanisms associated with the strength and fracture behavior of a highly ordered gold nanowire (Au-NW) array of a pair of nanofasteners (nanoconnectors) under externally applied shear strain. Large-scale atomic/molecular massively parallel simulator (LAMMPS and embedded atom method were adopted to model the atomic interactions of a number of neighboring nanofasteners. This was affected via the use of a periodic simulation box around a pair of highly ordered nanotube arrays to minimize the cost of the computations. Energy minimization using a conjugate gradient algorithm was first performed and followed by atomic relaxation to achieve an equilibrated configuration under the canonical ensemble of constant temperature and volume. The relaxed equilibrated configuration of the nanofastener was then subjected to an externally applied shear strain [Formula: see text] at a rate of [Formula: see text] per nanosecond under the canonical ensemble. Our results reveal the importance of the morphology and the overlap depth of the mating nanowire arrays upon the mechanical and fracture behavior of the nanofastener under shear loading. Our work also disclosed the phenomenon of multiple contacts of some displaced nanowires with their neighbors even after their fracture leading to multiple cold-welds with added redundancy to the nanofastener. Finally, in this research, we identified the locations of dislocation emissions and the resulting fracture processes that govern the mechanical integrity and ultimately the functionality of the Au-NW connector. The proposed highly ordered alignment, as conceived numerically herein, can yield a peak stress two to three times higher than that corresponding to a random alignment reported in a previous study. The Au-NW connector also exhibited resistance to fracture, even in cases where small overlap depth is considered in joint bonding. The nanoconnector was also tested at high temperatures (up to 450 K). Our results show that the rising temperature only leads to a minor reduction in the load transmitted by the nanoconnector.
