Abstract:AbstractElectro-optic (E-O) polymers have drawn great interest in recent years because of their potential applications in photonics devices such as high speed modulators and switches, optical data storage and information processing1–2. In order to have suitable materials for device fabrication, it is essential to design and develop polymeric material systems (active and passive polymers) with matched refractive indices, large E-O coefficients, good temporal and photochemical stability3–8 The E-O response of an active polymer commonly arises from the electric field induced alignment of its second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophore, either doped as a guest/host system or covalently bonded as a side-chain. Because of the strong interaction among the electric dipoles, the poled structure is in a meta-stable state; the poled NLO chromophores which possess large dipole moment will tend to relax back to the randomly oriented state. As a result, the stability of the poled structure strongly depends on the rigidity of the overall material system. As it might be expected, the continuous increases of the rigidity and Tg of poled polymers imposes constraints on the selection of suitable chromophores that can survive the hightemperature poling and processing conditions. To circumvent this problem, we have developed a series of chromophores that possess conformation-locked geometry and perfluoro-dicyanovinylsubstituted electron-accepting group which demonstrate both good thermal stabilty and nonlinearity. This paper provides a brief review of these highly efficient and thermally stable chromophores and polymers for device applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate 100-Gbaud on-off-keying (OOK) transmission driven at a low voltage using an electro-optic (EO) polymer modulator combined with a silicon Mach-Zehnder interferometer waveguide. Various types of organic- and polymer-based modulators have been reported to perform efficient EO modulation and high-speed data transmission at over 100 Gbaud. However, there are critical concerns regarding the practical application of polymer devices in terms of environmental stability. In particular, long-term thermal storage and stability during operation require improvements before EO polymer modulators can be applied in practical systems. We have developed an EO polymer with enhanced thermophysical stability and used it to fabricate an efficient EO polymer modulator. In this study we extend our earlier work on high-speed EO polymer modulators by performing fiber-link 100-Gbaud OOK transmission at various operating temperatures. A thermal stability test revealed that the EO polymer modulator can survive high-temperature exposure up to 110°C. Error-free signal transmissions over a distance of 2.0 km was successfully demonstrated with a driving voltage of 1.9 V pp and a bit error rate below the 7% overhead forward error correction threshold. The driving voltage, bandwidth, bit error rate, and fiber-link performance of the device are presented.

Abstract:One kind of electro-optic polymer assisted Mach–Zehnder optical switch based on silicon slot structure is presented in this paper. The interference arms of the switch are slot structures instead of regular single-mode waveguides. By filling electro-optic material in the void slot of the arms, direct electro-optic modulation can be introduced. Theoretical model and detailed analysis are given in this paper. The length-independent product VπL is about 74mVcm when slot width is 100nm, and 37mVcm when slot width is 50nm, when the polymer with a electro-optical coefficient of γ33=130pm/V is assisted. An ultralow energy consumption of only 37fJ/bit is achievable, and the turn-on time of the switch is less than 1.5ps.

Abstract:To reduce the ever-increasing energy consumption in datacenters, one of the effective approaches is to increase the ambient temperature, thus lowering the energy consumed in the cooling systems. However, this entails more stringent requirements for the reliability and durability of the optoelectronic components. Herein, we fabricate and demonstrate silicon-polymer hybrid modulators which support ultra-fast single-lane data rates up to 200 gigabits per second, and meanwhile feature excellent reliability with an exceptional signal fidelity retained at extremely-high ambient temperatures up to 110 °C and even after long-term exposure to high temperatures. This is achieved by taking advantage of the high electro-optic (EO) activities (in-device n 3 r 33 = 1021 pm V −1 ), low dielectric constant, low propagation loss ( α , 0.22 dB mm −1 ), and ultra-high glass transition temperature ( T g , 172 °C) of the developed side-chain EO polymers. The presented modulator simultaneously fulfils the requirements of bandwidth, EO efficiency, and thermal stability for EO modulators. It could provide ultra-fast and reliable interconnects for energy-hungry and harsh-environment applications such as datacentres, 5G/B5G, autonomous driving, and aviation systems, effectively addressing the energy consumption issue for the next-generation optical communication.

Abstract:The accelerating increase in information traffic demands the expansion of optical access network systems that require cost reduction of optical and photonic components. Low cost, ease of fabrication, and integration capabilities of low optical-loss polymers make them attractive for photonic applications. In addition to passive wave-guiding components, electro-optic (EO) polymers consisting of a polymeric matrix doped with organic nonlinear chromophores have enabled wide-RF-bandwidth and low-power optical modulators. Beside board level passive and active optical components, compact on-chip modulators (a few 100 micronmeters to a few millimeters) have been made possible by hybrid integration of EO polymers onto the silicon platform. This paper summarizes some of the recent progress in polymer based optical modulators and interconnects. A highly linear, broadband directional coupler modulator for use in analog optical links and compact, and low-power silicon/polymer hybrid slot photonic crystal waveguide modulators for on chip applications are presented. Recently, cost-effective roll-to-roll fabrication of electronic and photonic systems on flexible substrates has been gaining interest. A low-cost imprinted/ink-jet-printed Mach-Zehnder modulator and board-to-board optical interconnects using microlens integrated 45-degree mirror couplers compatible with the roll-to-roll fabrication platforms are also presented.

Abstract:We experimentally characterize the performance of 100-GHz electro-optical polymer Mach-Zehnder modulators in both dual-drive and single-drive versions using broadband modulation. For the dual-drive version, we measure bit-error rate (BER) at 80 Gbit/s for differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) and >; 90 Gbit/s for on-off keying (OOK). The eye diagrams of 100 Gbit/s OOK and S21 measurement of up to 110-GHz further indicate a response bandwidth of >;100 GHz. Tunable-chirp operation is also demonstrated by changing the phase and amplitude of each driving signal. For the single-drive version, a BER of 10-9 is achieved for both 100-Gbit/s OOK and DPSK signals without optical or electrical equalization. The single-drive version shows a 7-dB bandwidth of >; 110-GHz and a chirp factor of as low as -0.02.

Abstract:An integrated circular-polarization modulator (CPM) is designed and fabricated with electrooptic (EO) poly- meric materials employing contact poling. Tilted-poling is employed to activate the conversion between TE and TM modes, while the tensor nature of the poled polymeric materials is used to generate the phase-difference modulation. With appropriate voltage control, the outputs at the 45 -tilted linear, left-hand-cir- cular (LHC), 45 -tilted linear, and right-hand-circular (RHC) polarization states are achieved. The extinction ratios at the linearly polarized states are larger than 25 dB. Index Terms—Electrooptic modulation, integrated optics, optical planar waveguide, optical polarization, optical polymers.

Abstract:Liquid crystals are widely used in photonics because of their profound electro-optic properties. However, the slow switching speeds (milliseconds) and the fluid nature of liquid crystals restrict their potential use in integrated photonics. In this work, polymer-stabilized liquid crystals are utilized as the functional material to improve the response time with a polymer network that helps pre-orientate the liquid crystal. Additionally, plasmonic slot structures are simultaneously employed to minimize the switch voltage by confining the optical field within the electrode spacing at subwavelength scales. Thanks to the large overlap of the optical and electric fields, the scattering states of the polymer-stabilized liquid crystal can be effectively manipulated to modulate the loss of the propagating wave, resulting in strong optical attenuation in the integrated photonic platform. Specifically, a plasmonic enhanced polymer-stabilized liquid crystal photonic device for operation at 1550 nm, which has a length of only 10 mu m and shows an extinction ratio of 0.38 dB mu m-1, with a power consumption of less than 6 mu W and a response time approximate to 20 mu s, resulting in a figure-of-merit of 0.012 mW. A scheme of on-chip integrated optical attenuators for plasmonic slot waveguide-enhanced electro-optical properties of polymer-stabilized liquid crystal film is proposed. This prototype reduces the response time and improves the modulation efficiency of the liquid crystal-based integrated photonic device, resulting in a compact and energy-efficient platform for on-chip optical modulation. image

Abstract:Efficient electro-optic (EO) modulation can be generated in the hybrid silicon modulator with EO polymer in the form of an in-plane coplanar waveguide and electrode structure. Strong confinement of the optical field in the hybrid structure is critical to performing efficient electric poling and modulation of the EO polymer. The waveguide consists of silica-based side claddings and an EO core for increasing the integral of the optical field and the overlap interaction between the optical field and the modulated electric field within the EO polymer. We discuss in detail the volume resistivity dependence of the efficiency of electric poling and modulation for various side-cladding materials. In a Mach-Zehnder interferometer modulator, the measured half-wave-voltage length product (VπL) is 1.9 V·cm at an optical communication wavelength of 1,550 nm under the TE optical mode operation. The high-speed signaling of the device is demonstrated by generating on-off-keying transmission at signal rates up to 52 Gbit/s with a Q factor of 6.1 at a drive voltage of 2.0 Vpp.
Miniaturized Low-power Electro-optic Modulator Based on Silicon Integrated Nanophotonics and Organic Polymers

Abstract:We design and demonstrate a compact, low-power, low-dispersion and broadband optical modulator based on electro-optic (EO) polymer refilled silicon slot photonic crystal waveguide (PCW). The EO polymer is engineered for large EO activity and near-infrared transparency. The half-wave switching-voltage is measured to be V{\pi}=0.97V over optical spectrum range of 8nm, corresponding to a record-high effective in-device r33 of 1190pm/V and V{\pi} L of 0.291Vmm in a push-pull configuration. Excluding the slow-light effect, we estimate the EO polymer is poled with an ultra-high efficiency of 89pm/V in the slot. In addition, to achieve high-speed modulation, silicon PCW is selectively doped to reduce RC time delay. The 3-dB RF bandwidth of the modulator is measured to be 11GHz, and a modulation response up to 40GHz is observed.

Abstract:Integrated electro-optic modulators are key components in photonic integrated circuits. Silicon photonic technology is considered to be promising for large-scale and low-cost integration. However, silicon does not exhibit any Pockels effect, and the electro-optic modulator based on free-carrier dispersion suffers from challenges such as high-power consumption, limited bandwidth, and large optical propagation loss. Here, a new, to the best of our knowledge, hybrid lithium tantalite-silicon platform is proposed for electro-optic modulators based on the Pockels effect. Benefiting from the strong Pockels coefficients of a thin-film lithium tantalite, a hybrid microring-based modulator is demonstrated. The quality factor and the extinction ratio of the hybrid microring are 1.7 x 104 and 10 dB, respectively. The linear bidirectional wavelength tuning efficiency is measured as 12.8 pm/V. The measured 3-dB bandwidth is > 20 GHz. High-quality eye diagrams of 20 Gbps non-return-to-zero signal and 20 Gbps four-level pulse amplitude modulation signals are generated experimentally. The proposed platform extends the toolbox of silicon photonics technology, which paves the way for high-speed modulators and phase shifters in optical communication and optical phased array. Abstract:Although Gigahertz-scale free-carrier modulators have been previously demonstrated in silicon, intensity modulators operating at Terahertz speeds have not been reported because of silicon's weak ultrafast optical nonlinearity. We have demonstrated intensity modulation of light with light in a silicon-polymer integrated waveguide device, based on the all-optical Kerr effect - the same ultrafast effect used in four-wave mixing. Direct measurements of time-domain intensity modulation are made at speeds of 10 GHz. We showed experimentally that the ultrafast mechanism of this modulation functions at the optical frequency through spectral measurements, and that intensity modulation at frequencies in excess of 1 THz can be obtained in this device. By integrating optical polymers through evanescent coupling to high-mode-confinement silicon waveguides, we greatly increase the effective nonlinearity of the waveguide for cross-phase modulation. The combination of high mode confinement, multiple integrated optical components, and high nonlinearities produces all-optical ultrafast devices operating at continuous-wave power levels compatible with telecommunication systems. Although far from commercial radio frequency optical modulator standards in terms of extinction, these devices are a first step in development of large-scale integrated ultrafast optical logic in silicon, and are two orders of magnitude faster than previously reported silicon devices.

Practical Evaluation of Polymer Waveguides for High-Speed and Meter-Scale On-Board Optical Interconnects

Abstract:We comprehensively evaluated optical characteristics, environmental stabilities, fiber optics compatibilities, and high-speed performances of multimode polymer waveguides fabricated in small batch with a length of 946 mm. The waveguides exhibit a low transmission loss (0.046 dB/cm at a wavelength of 850 nm), low interchannel crosstalk (<= -58 dB), and a large misalignment tolerance (+/- 20 mu m) between fiber and waveguide. The waveguides show good environmental stability and the increase of propagation loss is as small as 0.005 dB/cm and 0.004 dB/cm after a 1000-h ageing test and five solder reflow cycles, respectively. The waveguides have good compatibilities w ith fibers having different core diameters and index profiles that may be encountered in the real application environment. High-speed transmission performances were evaluated using both nonreturn to zero (NRZ) transmission at data rates of 25 Gb/s and 30 Gb/s, and PAM4 transmission at data rates of 20 Gb/s and 56 Gb/s, respectively. There is no obvious degradation on the eye diagram due to the insertion of the waveguide. Error free transmission were successfully obtained for NRZ transmission at data rates of both 25 Gb/s and 30 Gb/s. The BER for PAM4 transmission reached a level of 10(-4) at data rates of both 10 Gbaud (20 Gb/s) and 28 Gbaud (56 Gb/s), which is well below the forward error correction limitation. Moreover, it is the bandwidth of the test equipment rather than the polymer waveguide itself that limits the high-speed transmission performances in our experiments. The results demonstrate that the polymer waveguides are good candidates for high-speed and meter-scale on-board optical interconnect applications.
