Abstract:The geometry structures, electronic properties, and chemical bonding of neutral, anionic and cationic alloy B4Aln (n = 1–5) clusters series were systematically studied by using density functional theory at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d) level of theory for geometry optimization and using coupled cluster single point energy calculations at the CCSD(T)/6-311+G(2df)//B3LYP/6-311+G(d) level of theory. Comprehensive structure search and calculations demonstrate that the Al atoms tend to occupy the periphery sites of all alloy clusters, and the lowest–energy structures prefer low spin states (singlet or doublet). For small alloy cluster with total number of atoms ≤6, the clusters display the rare Anti-Van’t Hoff/Le Bel motifs planar tetracoordinate boron (ptB) and planar pentacoordinate boron (ppB), whereas, for total number of atoms ≥7, it shows 3D configuration. To evaluate the stabilities and electronic properties of the global minimum isomers of each stoichiometry at different charge states, the binding energy, fragmentation energy, second–order difference of the total energy, HOMO–LUMO gap, ionization potential, and electron affinity have been evaluated. We find that for anionic and cationic alloy B4Aln −/+ (n = 1–5) clusters, the odd–n systems are more stable than the even–n ones. AdNDP analyses of the chemical bonding of the global minimum structures indicate that the classical 2c–2e bonds and multicenter nc–2e (n = 3–9) delocalized bonds are responsible for the stability of boron–aluminum mixed alloy clusters.

Abstract:Predicting the structure of pure boron and its doped clusters based on global structure search technology, and exploring its structural evolution model and bonding properties have been the focus of research. In the present study, the CALYPSO software and DFT calculations were used by us to search the structure of the previously unreported anionic NaBn – (n = 1–12) clusters system that determined its ground-state structures. Through structural analysis, we found that NaBn – (n = 1–12) clusters maintain a planar evolution pattern, and doped Na atoms are located in the convex position of the structure. In the stability analysis, we found two molecular wheel structures NaB7 – and NaB8 – clusters, and the charge transfer analysis showed that the position of doped Na atoms greatly affected the bonding inside the clusters. The analysis of the bonding properties of the NaB7 – and NaB8 – clusters shows that the Na-3s, Na-3p, and B-2p orbitals have high contributions, and the atoms in the NaB7 – and NaB8 – clusters have close interactions, forming strong Na-B and B-B covalent bonds. Finally, the interaction region indicator methodology suggests that not only chemical bonding interactions but also strong–weak interactions exist between B atoms of the NaB7 – and NaB8 – clusters.

Abstract:Structures and electronic properties of alkali metal atom-doped boron clusters MB120/– (M = Li, Na, K) are determined using the CALYPSO method for the global minimum search followed by density functional theory. It is found that the global minima obtained for the neutral clusters correspond to the half-sandwich structure and those of the monoanionic clusters correspond to the boat-shaped structure. The neutral MB12 (M = Li, Na, K) can be considered as a member of the half-sandwich doped B12 clusters, and the geometrical pattern of anion MB12– (M = Li, Na, K) is a new structure that is different from other doped B12 clusters. Natural population and chemical bonding analyses reveal that the alkali metal atom-doped boron clusters MB12– are characterized as charge transfer complexes, M+B122–, resulting in symmetrically distributed chemical bonds and electrostatic interactions between cationic M+ and boron atoms. The calculated spectra indicate that MB120/– (M = Li, Na, K) has meaningful spectral features that can be compared with future experimental data. Our work enriches the varieties of geometrical structures of doped boron clusters and can provide much insight into boron nanomaterials.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Because of their interesting structures and bonding and potentials as motifs for new nanomaterials, size-selected boron clusters have received tremendous interest in recent years. In particular, boron cluster anions (B-n(-)) have allowed systematic joint photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical studies, revealing predominantly two-dimensional structures. The discovery of the planar B-36 cluster with a central hexagonal vacancy provided the first experimental evidence of the viability of 2D borons, giving rise to the concept of borophene. The finding of the B-40 cage cluster unveiled the existence of fullerene-like boron clusters (borospherenes). Metal-doping can significantly extend the structural and bonding repertoire of boron clusters. Main-group metals interact with boron through s/p orbitals, resulting in either half-sandwich-type structures or substitutional structures. Transition metals are more versatile in bonding with boron, forming a variety of structures including half-sandwich structures, metal-centered boron rings, and metal-centered boron drums. Transition metal atoms have also been found to be able to be doped into the plane of 2D boron clusters, suggesting the possibility of metalloborophenes. Early studies of di-metal-doped boron clusters focused on gold, revealing ladder-like boron structures with terminal gold atoms. Recent observations of highly symmetric Ta2B6- and Ln(2)B(n)(-) (n = 7-9) clusters have established a family of inverse sandwich structures with monocyclic boron rings stabilized by two metal atoms. The study of size-selected boron and doped-boron clusters is a burgeoning field of research. Further investigations will continue to reveal more interesting structures and novel chemical bonding, paving the foundation for new boron-based chemical compounds and nanomaterials.

Abstract:Main observation and conclusion Borane clusters and their derivatives have attracted extensive attention in inorganic chemistry due to their fascinating multi-center bonding patterns and physicochemical properties. Here we report a systematic theoretical investigation on the geometry, electronic structure and chemical bonding of BnXn0/2- (n = 4, 6; X = H, F, Cl, Br, I, At, Ts) clusters, attempting to explore their bonding features, exceptional stability and the ligand effect. We find that the electronic structure and stability of BnXn0/2- clusters can be tuned by the size of the boron cage and electronegativity of the ligand. Fragment orbital energy matching and orbital overlap are of great importance to the covalency of the cluster. In addition to the ionic electrostatic interaction that dominates the bonding interaction and decreases as the ligand becomes heavier, multi-center bonding covalency determined by the orbital interaction increases accordingly, attributing to the reducing electronegativity. The sigma-donations from the ligand to the boron cage as well as multi-center two-electron (nc-2e) bonding contribute to the sigma aromaticity and superb stability. This work reveals the foremost factors that determine the structure and stability of boron clusters, and provides insights into the nature of chemical bonding for species with boron cages and even bulk boron.

Abstract:In this work, we employ density functional theory (DFT) to explore the structure of boron clusters doped with two aluminium atoms (B$_7$Al$_2$ or Al$_2$B$_7$). The results show that the most stable structure is a bipyramidal configuration formed by a B$_7$ ring coordinated with two Al atoms, while the higher energy isomers correspond to peripheral Al$_2$-doped B$_7$ structures. The IR spectra and density of states reveal remarkable differences between the global minimum and the higher energy isomers.

Abstract:Doping alkali metals into boron clusters can effectively compensate for the intrinsic electron deficiency of boron and lead to interesting boron-based binary clusters, owing to the small electronegativity of the former elements. We report on the computational design of a three-layered sandwich cluster, Na5B7, on the basis of global-minimum (GM) searches and electronic structure calculations. It is shown that the Na5B7 cluster can be described as a charge-transfer complex: [Na4]2+[B7]3−[Na]+. In this sandwich cluster, the [B7]3− core assumes a molecular wheel in shape and features in-plane hexagonal coordination. The magic 6π/6σ double aromaticity underlies the stability of the [B7]3− molecular wheel, following the (4n + 2) Hückel rule. The tetrahedral Na4 ligand in the sandwich has a [Na4]2+ charge-state, which is the simplest example of three-dimensional aromaticity, spherical aromaticity, or superatom. Its 2σ electron counting renders σ aromaticity for the ligand. Overall, the sandwich cluster has three-fold 6π/6σ/2σ aromaticity. Molecular dynamics simulation shows that the sandwich cluster is dynamically fluxional even at room temperature, with a negligible energy barrier for intramolecular twisting between the B7 wheel and the Na4 ligand. The Na5B7 cluster offers a new example for dynamic structural fluxionality in molecular systems.

Abstract:The electron-deficient nature of boron endows isolated boron clusters with a variety of interesting structural and bonding properties that can be further enriched through metal doping. In the current work, we report the structural and electronic properties of a series of chromium-doped boron clusters. The global minimum structures for CrB n clusters with an even number of n ranging from 8 to 22 are proposed through extensive first-principles swarm-intelligence structure searches. Half-sandwich structures are found to be preferred for CrB8, CrB10, CrB12 and CrB14 clusters and to transform to a drum-like structure at CrB16 cluster. Endohedral cage structures with the Cr atom located at the center are energetically most favorable for CrB20 and CrB22 clusters. Notably, the endohedral CrB20 cage has a high symmetry of D 2d and a large HOMO-LUMO gap of 4.38 eV, whose stability is attributed to geometric fit and formation of an 18-electron closed-shell configuration. The current results advance our understanding of the structure and bonding of metal-doped boron clusters.

Abstract:Projects about alkaline-earth metals doped magnesium are hot issues constantly in cluster science, while research in terms of Mid-Sized Ba atoms doped magnesium cluster was unreported. We adopted the CALYPSO method coupled with DFT calculation to simplify the process of structure searching at the range of BanMgm 0/– (n = 1,2; m = 10–15) cluster. We found the doped Ba atoms tend to occupy convex capped sites in each structure. Meanwhile, the six-atom triangular prism as a major structure constructed the great mass of isomers. Based on the result of the relative stability survey, we selected BaMg13 – and Ba2Mg13 – to conduct further investigations, according to a different numbers of doped Ba atoms. Analysis of the bonding character manifests that the Mg-p orbital takes up the highest proportion for both BaMg13 – and Ba2Mg13 – cluster at HOMO, LUMO position as well as the existence of strong covalent bonds between Mg-Mg atoms and Ba-Mg atoms.

Abstract:Equilibrium geometries, stabilities, and electronic properties of TinAl (n = 1-13) clusters have been studied by using density-functional theory with local spin density approximation and generalized gradient approximation. The ground-state structures of TinAl clusters have been obtained. The resulting geometries show that the aluminum atom remains on the surface of clusters for n < 9, but is slowly getting trapped beyond n = 9, meanwhile, the Al atom exhibits a valent transition from monovalent to trivalent. The geometric effects and electronic effects clearly demonstrate the Ti4Al cluster to be endowed with special stability. The studies on the bonds indicate the change from ionic to metalliclike.

Electronic and optical properties of boron containing GaN alloys: The role boron atom clustering

Abstract:Boron (B) containing III-nitride materials, such as wurtzite (B,Ga)N alloys, have recently attracted significant interest to tailor the electronic and optical properties of optoelectronic devices operating in the visible and ultraviolet spectral range. However, the growth of high quality samples is challenging and B atom clustering is often observed in (B,Ga)N alloys. To date, fundamental understanding of the impact of such clustering on electronic and optical properties of these alloys is sparse. In this work we employ density functional theory (DFT) in the framework of the meta generalized gradient approximation (modified Becke Johnson (mBJ) functional) to provide insight into this question. We use mBJ DFT calculations, benchmarked against state-of-the-art hybrid functional DFT, on (B,Ga)N alloys in the experimentally relevant B content range of up to 7.4%. Our results reveal that B atom clustering can lead to a strong reduction in the bandgap of such an alloy, in contrast to alloy configurations where B atoms are not forming clusters, thus not sharing nitrogen (N) atoms. We find that the reduction in bandgap is linked mainly to carrier localization effects in the valence band, which stem from local strain and polarization field effects. However, our study also reveals that the alloy microstructure of a B atom cluster plays an important role: B atom chains along the wurtzite c-axis impact the electronic structure far less strongly when compared to a chain formed within the c-plane. This effect is again linked to local polarization field effects and the orbital character of the involved valence states in wurtzite BN and GaN. Overall, our calculations show that controlling the alloy microstructure of (B,Ga)N alloys is of central importance when it comes to utilizing these systems in future optoelectronic devices with improved efficiencies.

Abstract:To gain a deeper understanding of zinc-doped boron clusters, theoretical calculations were performed to investigate the size effects and electronic properties of zinc-doped boron clusters. The study of the electronic properties, spectral characteristics, and geometric structures of Zn ( n = 1–15) is of great significance in the fields of semiconductor materials science, material detection, and improving catalytic efficiency. The results indicate that Zn ( n = 1–15) clusters predominantly exhibit planar or quasi-planar structures, with the Zn atom positioned in the outer regions of the framework. The second stable structure of Zn is a three-dimensional configuration, indicating that the structures of zinc-doped boron clusters begin to convert from the planar or quasi-planar structures to the 3D configurations. The second low-energy structure of Zn is a novel configuration. Relative stability analyses show that the Zn has better chemical stability than other clusters with a HOMO-LUMO gap of 2.79 eV. Electric charge analysis shows that part electrons on zinc atoms are transferred to boron atoms, and electrons prefer to cluster near the framework. According to the electron localization function, it gets harder to localize electrons as the equivalent face value drops, and it's challenging to see covalent bond formation between zinc and boron atoms. The spectrograms of Zn ( n = 1–15) exhibit distinct properties and notable spectral features, which can be used as a theoretical basis for the identification and confirmation of boron clusters doped with single-atom transition metals.

Abstract:The lowest-energy geometries and electronic-structure properties have beenobtained for AlnHn (n=1-10) clusters within thedensity-functional theory using the generalized gradient approximation forthe exchange correlation potential. The resulting geometries show that thehydrogen atoms tend to occupy outside positions and no hollow positions arefound. The subunit Aln of AlnHn (n=1-5) have littledistortion, in comparison with corresponding pure Aln cluster, whereasthe subunit Aln have large distortion from n=6. The stability has beeninvestigated by analyzing the binding energy per atom and the seconddifference in energy, indicating that Al8H8 exhibit higherstability than others. The bonding property has been analyzed by calculatingthe Mulliken charges and Al–H distances. The calculated energy gap betweenthe highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecularorbital (HOMO-LUMO), the vertical ionization potential, and the verticalelectron affinity also confirm that Al8H8 is a stable cluster. Thedensity of states (DOS) shows that AlnHn exhibit changes frommolecular-like (Al1H1) to band-like structure (Al10H10)as n increases.

Abstract:The geometries, electronic structures, stability and bonding of AlCon0/− (n = 1–5) clusters are investigated using density functional theory. The most stable structures of AlCon (n = 1–5) clusters are formed by substituting a Co atom of Con+1 clusters with a Al atom. The adiabatic detachment energies and vertical detachment energies of AlCon− (n = 1–5) are predicated at BPW91/6-311 + G(d) level. The binding energies indicate that the doped Al weakens the stability of Con+1 (n = 1–5) clusters slightly. The dissociation energies and molecular orbital analyses both demonstrate that Co and Al are bonding strongly in AlCon0/− (n = 1–5) clusters.

Abstract:Density-functional calculation within local density approximation, shows that the electronic property of a barium oxide cluster is strongly correlated with its equilibrium structure. The ground-state structures of BanOm (4less than or equal tonless than or equal to9,mless than or equal ton) clusters can be classified into four categories: (a) compact, (b) dangling state, (c) F-center, and (d) stoichiometric. The compact cluster is metallic, almost no energy gap exists between the highest occupied and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals. The energy gap for the dangling state cluster is larger than that for the F-center cluster, while the stoichiometric cluster has the largest energy gap. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.
