Abstract:Biosynthesis offers opportunities for cost-effective and sustainable production of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs), but is currently restricted by poor controllability on the synthesis process, resulting from limited knowledge on the assembly mechanisms and the lack of effective control strategies. In this work, we provide molecular-level insights into the formation mechanism of biogenic QDs (Bio-QDs) and its connection with the cellular substrate metabolism in Escherichia coli. Strengthening the substrate metabolism for producing more reducing power was found to stimulate the production of several reduced thiol-containing proteins (including glutaredoxin and thioredoxin) that play key roles in Bio-QDs assembly. This effectively diverted the transformation route of the selenium (Se) and cadmium (Cd) metabolic from Cd3(PO4)2 formation to CdS xSe1- x QDs assembly, yielding fine-sized (2.0 ± 0.4 nm), high-quality Bio-QDs with quantum yield (5.2%) and fluorescence lifetime (99.19 ns) far exceeding the existing counterparts. The underlying mechanisms of Bio-QDs crystallization and development were elucidated by density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulation. The resulting Bio-QDs were successfully used for bioimaging of cancer cells and tumor tissue of mice without extra modification. Our work provides fundamental knowledge on the Bio-QDs assembly mechanisms and proposes an effective, facile regulation strategy, which may inspire advances in controlled synthesis and practical applications of Bio-QDs as well as other bionanomaterials.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) are recognized as the excellent fluorescence and photochemical materials to be applied in bioimaging, biomedical, and solar cell fields. Biosynthesized QDs (bio-QDs) have attracted attention due to their simple, eco-friendly, and excellent biocompatible traits. Moreover, bio-QDs could not be replaced by chemically fabricated QDs in many fields. Bio-QDs synthesized by different microorganisms have diverse characteristics. In this work, the biosynthesis of QDs by Tetrahymena pyriformis , a typical protozoa in aquatic environments, was achieved for the first time. The synthesized materials by T. pyriformis emitted yellow fluorescence and had an average diameter of 8.27 ± 0.77 nm. Spectral characterization results demonstrated that the synthesized QDs were CdS 1-X Se X . Meanwhile, the fluorescence intensities of the synthesized bio-QDs showed a linear relationship with Cd 2+ dosage ranging from 20 to 80 μM. The fluorescence enhancement of the synthesized QDs was highly selective to Cd 2+ compared to other metal ions. The bio-QDs were demonstrated to have a great potential to be applied for Cd 2+ detection. This work provides valuable information about the transformation of heavy metal ions in protozoan and is useful to accelerate the applications of the synthesized QDs.
Octahedron Shaped Lead Sulfide Nanocrystals As Counter Electrodes for Quantum Dot Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:PbS nanocrystals with octahedron shape are synthesized by a low temperature approach with presence of cation/anion surfactants in aqueous solution. CdS quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) based on these novel octahedron shaped PbS counter electrodes (CEs) are fabricated for the first time, achieving PCE of 1.54%. It is observed that the octahedron shaped PbS CE shows higher electrocatalytic activity compared with the Pt CE, indicating that the PbS nanocrystals with a uniformly distributed size is a superior candidate as CEs for QDSSCs application. This work may provide new route for preparing PbS from aqueous solvent medium through a simple synthesis route.
Wave-Function Engineering of CdSe/CdS Core/Shell Quantum Dots for Enhanced Electron Transfer to a TiO2Substrate

Abstract:In this paper, we have synthesized a series of core/shell quantum dots (QDs) for the purpose of enhancing the electron transfer from the dots to a TiO2 substrate. We make use of the fact that CdSe is a small-bandgap material compared with CdS; therefore, in a common CdSe/CdS core/shell QD, the photo-excited electron is confined deeply in the CdSe core. By special construction of the CdS/CdSe core/shell QDs, referred as reversed type-I, the electron wave function will distribute largely in the shell region. This facilitates the transfer of the electron from the QD to the TiO2 substrate, resulting in significantly improved electron-injection efficiency. Such an enhanced electron-injection efficiency was confirmed by fluorescence lifetime decay measurements, showing the largest lifetime reduction after that the QDs were adsorbed on the TiO2 surface. The reversed type-I CdS/CdSe QDs show a much higher photon-to-current conversion efficiency than type-I CdSe/CdS and CdSe QDs without shell. Furthermore, by chemical-bath depositing of CdS on the QD-sensitized electrode to form a quantum-well structure, the electron recombination between the QDs and the redox couple was reduced, hence further enhancing the electron-injection efficiency. The absorbed-photon-to-current efficiency of the quantum well CdS/CdSe/CdS sensitized solar cells reaches a value as high as 60%.
Facile Synthesis of N-rich Carbon Quantum Dots from Porphyrins As Efficient Probes for Bioimaging and Biosensing in Living Cells.

Abstract:N-rich metal-free and metal-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been prepared through one-step hydrothermal method using tetraphenylporphyrin or its transition metal (Pd or Pt) complex as precursor. The structures and morphology of the as-prepared nanoparticles were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. Three kinds of nanocomposites show similar structures except for the presence of metal ions in Pd-CQDs and Pt-CQDs indicated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. All of them display bright blue emission upon exposure to ultraviolet irradiation. The CQDs exhibit typical excitation-dependent emission behavior, with the emission quantum yield of 10.1%, 17.8%, and 15.2% for CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs, respectively. Moreover, the CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs could serve as fluorescent probes for the specific and sensitive detection of Fe3+ ions in aqueous solution. The low cytotoxicity of CQDs is demonstrated by MTT assay against HeLa cells. Therefore, the CQDs can be used as efficient probes for cellular multicolor imaging and fluorescence sensors for the detection of Fe3+ ions due to their low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, and low detection limits. This work provides a new route to synthesize highly luminescent N-rich metal-free or metal-doped CQDs for multifunctional applications.

Abstract:In the field of quantum dots (QDs)-sensitized solar cells, semiconductor QDs sensitizer with a moderate band gap is required in order to sufficiently match the solar spectrum and achieve efficient charge separation. At present, changing the size of QDs is the main method used for adjusting their band gap through quantum size effect, however, the pore sizes of mesoporous TiO2 film set a limit on the allowed size of QDs. Therefore, the tuning of electronic and optical properties by changing the particle size could be limited under some circumstances. In this paper, high-quality aqueous CdS(x)Se(1-x) QDs sensitizer is successfully synthesized and effectively deposited on a mesoporous TiO2 film by a one-step hydrothermal method. In addition to size, alloy QDs provide composition as an additional dimension for tailoring their electronic properties. The alloy composition and band gap can be precisely controlled by tuning the precursor (Se/Na2S·9H2O) ratio while maintaining the similar particle size. By using such CdS(x)Se(1-x) sensitized TiO2 films as photoanodes for solar cell, a maximum power conversion efficiency of 2.23% is achieved under one sun illumination (AM 1.5 G, 100 mW cm(-2)).

Abstract:The hollow spherical CdSe QD assemblies were synthesized via a sonochemical approach that utilizes β-cyclodextrin as a template reagent in aqueous solution. The hollow nanospheres have an average diameter of 70nm and are found to consist of an assembly of monodispersed 5nm sized CdSe quantum dots. Following an electrochemical reaction with persulfate ions, strong electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) was observed from the CdSe nanoassemblies suspended in an aqueous solution of pH⩽7.95. The study indicates that the morphology of the 70nm nanoassembly plays an important role in generating the stable ECL since individually dispersed quantum dots did not exhibit any significant ECL. The unique ECL intensity and stability of the synthesized spherical nanoassemblies could allow for potential sensor applications of CdSe quantum dots in water.

Abstract:Organisms served as factories of bio-assembly of nanoparticles attracted a lot of attentions due to the safe, economic and environmental-benignity traits, especially the fabrication of the super fluorescence properties quantum dots (QDs). However, information about the developmental dynamics of QDs in living organisms is still lacking. In this work, we synthesized cadmium-selenium (CdSe) QDs in Candida utilis WSH02-08, and then tracked and quantitatively characterized the developmental dynamics (photoactivation, photostable and photobleaching processes) of bio-QDs by translating fluorescence microscopy movies into visual quantitative curve. These findings shed light on the fluorescence properties of the bio-assembled QDs and are expected to accelerate the applications of the synthesized QDs in vivo. It provided a new way to screen bio-QDs and monitor the quality of QDs in vivo.

Abstract:A postsynthesis assembly approach, an ex situ ligand exchange route, was developed for fast (within 2 h) and high loading (34% coverage) deposition of CdSe QDs on TiO2 films. With the combination of high-quality QD sensitizers and the effective deposition technique, a record photovoltaic performance with an efficiency of 5.4% was observed for the resulting cell device.

Abstract:Colloidal alloyed copper chalcogenide Cu2 − xSe1 − ySy (CuSeS) quantum dots (QDs) are promising building blocks for solar energy applications because of their unique size/composition‐tunable optical bandgap, which is well matched to the sunlight spectrum. Nevertheless, poor charge separation/transfer and low photostability induced by their intrinsically abundant surface defects/traps tremendously hinder the realization of high‐performance solar energy conversion systems such as solar‐driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices. Herein, the synthesis of copper chalcogenide CuSeS core QDs with effective CdS shell passivation is presented. These core/shell QDs exhibit optimized optoelectronic properties with a particularly ultralong lifetime, indicating the formation of type‐II band structure for efficient spatial charge separation, which is further probed using ultrafast transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy. To demonstrate the feasibility of solar energy conversion, solar‐driven PEC cells using such core/shell QDs as light‐converters are fabricated, yielding an impressive saturated photocurrent density of ≈4 mA cm−2 with preeminent durability under 1 sun illumination. This finding highlights a potential technique to engineer the optoelectronic properties of colloidal alloyed copper chalcogenide nanomaterials for high efficiency and stable solar energy conversion devices.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs), owning to their unique optical and electronic properties, are increasingly used for bio-imaging/biosensing in medical and energy fields. Biosynthesis of QDs offers several advantages over the conventional chemical synthesis route, such as low cost, environmental-benignity, and no need for further modification of the products. However, information about the regulation and mechanism of synthesis of QDs with great fluorescence properties is still limited. In this work, we prepared cadmium selenium (CdSe) QDs in vivo using Candida utilis WSH02-08. We regulated the fluorescence properties of the bio-QDs through different precursor concentrations, and found that the bio-QDs with high fluorescence intensity and long photostable lifetime were favoured at an elevated Cd content over Se. The synthesis of the high-quality bio-QDs was attributed to the less formation of Se(0) and the increased formation of CdSe and CdS. Furthermore, such synthesized QDs were directly used in live-cell imaging without further modification. These findings are expected to enable a further design of biosynthesized QDs with great fluorescence properties and expand our understanding of the regulation mechanism of nanoparticles fabrication in microorganisms. Anaerobic self-assembly of regenerable bacteria-quantum dots hybrid for solar hydrogen production

Abstract:Inorganic-biological hybrid systems (bio-hybrid), comprising fermentative bacteria and inorganic semiconductor photosensitizers for synergistic utilization of solar energy and organic wastes, offer opportunities for sustainable fuel biosynthesis, but the low quantum efficiency, photosensitizer biotoxicity and inability for self-regeneration are remaining hurdles to overcome. Here, we unveiled a previously-neglected role of oxygen in suppressing the biosynthesis of cadmium selenide quantum dots (CdSe QDs) and the metabolic activities of Escherichia coli, and accordingly adopted a simple oxygen-regulation strategy to enable self-assembly of bacterial-QDs hybrid for efficient solar hydrogen production. Shifting from aerobic to anaerobic biosynthesis significantly lowered the intracellular reactive oxygen species level and raise the NADPH and thiol-protein production, enabling two-order-of-magnitude higher bio-QDs synthesis rate and resulting in CdSe-rich products. The bacteria with abundant biocompatible intracellular bio-QDs naturally formed high-activity, self-regenerable bio-hybrid and achieved quantum efficiency of 28.7% for visible-light-driven photocatalytic hydrogen production, outperforming all the existing existing bio-hybrids. It also exhibited high stability during cyclic operation and robust performance for treating real wastewater under simulated sunlight. Our work provides valuable new insights into the metallic nanomaterial biosynthesis process to guide the design of self-assembled bio-hybrid towards sustainable energy and environmental applications.

Abstract:CdTe/ZnSe core/shell quantum dots were directly synthesized in an aqueous condition by heating a mixed solution of ZnCI2, NaHSe and CdTe QDs in the presence of mercaptosuccinic acid as a stabilizer. By controlling the size and composition, the CdTe/ZnSe QDs with emission wavelength ranging from 540 to 630 nm, high quantum yield (44%) and narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM) could be obtained. Characterization results with HRTEM, XRD and EDX have shown that the synthesized CdTe/ZnSe QDs have good monodispersity and a nice crystal structure, and exhibited better stability and less cytotoxicity as compared with CdTe QDs. Furthermore, luminescent QD-IgG bioprobes were produced to detect the breast cancer marker Her2 on the surface of fixed MCF-7 cancer cells for their optical imaging.

Abstract:We developed a novel one-pot polyol approach for the synthesis of biocompatible CdSe quantum dots (QDs) using poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) as a capping ligand at 240°C. The morphological and structural characterization confirmed the formation of biocompatible and monodisperse CdSe QDs with several nanometers in size. The encapsulation of CdS thin layers on the surface of CdSe QDs (CdSe/CdS core–shell QDs) was used for passivating the defect emission (650 nm) and enhancing the fluorescent quantum yields up to 30% of band-to-band emission (530–600 nm). Moreover, the PL emission peak of CdSe/CdS core–shell QDs could be tuned from 530 to 600 nm by the size of CdSe core. The as-prepared CdSe/CdS core–shell QDs with small size, well water solubility, good monodispersity, and bright PL emission showed high performance as fluorescent cell labels in vitro. The viability of QDs-labeled 293T cells was evaluated using a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol)-2-diphenyltertrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The results showed the satisfactory (>80%) biocompatibility of as-synthesized PAA-capped QDs at the Cd concentration of 15 μg/ml.

Abstract:Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) with core/shell architecture can offer tailored electronic and optical properties which are promising for various optoelectronic applications. Here, we report the growth of multifunctional AgGaS2 (AGS)/CdSeS core/shell QDs via a simple two-step synthetic method. In comparison to the bare AGS QDs, as-synthesized core/shell QDs revealed enhanced visible light absorption, red-shifted emission and prolonged exciton lifetime, demonstrating the type II band alignment of the AGS core and CdSeS shell structure for improved charge separation/transfer, as further verified by the measured ultrafast carrier dynamics. The heterostructured core/shell QDs were used to fabricate both the photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells and photodetectors for efficient solar energy conversion and light detection, showing a maximum photocurrent density of ~4.8 mA/cm2 under visible light irradiation and a detectivity of 3.3 × 1010 Jones under wavelength of 510 nm, respectively. These findings indicate that the rational design of core/shell architecture is promising to tailor the optoelectronic properties and band structure of QDs for versatile and high-performance optoelectronic applications.

Modification of Photon Emission Statistics from Single Colloidal Cdse Quantum Dots by Conductive Materials

Abstract:Colloidal CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (QDs) can be used to generate single photons at room temperature for promising applications in quantum information sciences. Despite the existence of biexciton (BX) states, they would undergo fast nonradiative Auger relaxation (AR), leading to pure single-exciton (SX) emission, even under high-power excitation. In this work, the fluorescence properties of single colloidal QDs deposited on the conductive ITO surface have been investigated by combining photon correlation spectroscopy and time-tagged, time-correlated single-photon counting (TT-TCSPC) measurement. The conductive materials can introduce extra nonradiative (NR) processes, and thus can significantly alter pristine emission properties, including emission brightness, fluorescence lifetime, and photon emission statistics. We found that such a NR process can strongly quench SX emission but has less effect on BX emission, leading to the increase of the quantum-yield (QY) ratio between BX and SX emission. As a result, the purity of single-photon emission would be degraded despite the fact that fluorescence blinking can be suppressed. This experimental understanding is significant for further designing high-performance single-photon sources based on low-cost colloidal QDs operating at room temperature.
