Abstract:The combination of experimental and theoretical results demonstrates that the O vacancies of WO3 effectively mitigate the tendency of electron transfer from platinum (Pt) sites to WO3, so that the d‐band center could reach an ideal level relative to Fermi level, endowing it with a suitable ΔGH∗ . Finally, the optimal electron‐rich Pt sites on Pt/WO3‐600 achieve ultralow overpotential at acidic media. Pt‐based supported materials, a widely used electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), often experience unavoidable electron loss, resulting in a mismatching of electronic structure and HER behavior. Here, a Pt/WO3 catalyst consisting of Pt species strongly coupled with defective WO3 polycrystalline nanorods is rationally designed. The electronic structure engineering of Pt sites on WO3 can be systematically regulated, and so that the optimal electron‐rich Pt sites on Pt/WO3‐600 present an excellent HER activity with only 8 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm−2. Particularly, the mass activity reaches 7015 mA mg−1 at the overpotential of 50 mV, up to 26‐fold higher than that of the commercial Pt/C. The combination of experimental and theoretical results demonstrates that the O vacancies of WO3 effectively mitigate the tendency of electron transfer from Pt sites to WO3, so that the d‐band center could reach an appropriate level relative to Fermi level, endowing it with a suitable ΔGH∗ . This work identifies the influence of the electronic structure on catalytic activity.

Abstract:Oxygen vacancy-rich titania is a promising support for enhancing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This work innovatively loaded Pt nanoparticles on oxygen vacancy-rich TiO2 (Pt/Vo-TiO2) in situ by using a photocatalytic device. The synthesis conditions are mild, do not require high temperatures and strong reducing agents, and can avoid the accumulation of platinum species. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectrometry (XAS) verified the synergistic effect of Pt species and oxygen vacancies on the progress of the reaction kinetics, where the Pt particles exposed by the in situ synthesis functioned as reaction sites in the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Based on this, Pt/Vo-TiO2 exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance with an overpotential of only 56 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of only 73.5 mV dec-1. This work provides a new strategy for designing highly efficient HER catalysts.

Co-vacancy Induced Pt Filling Combines Defective Co3O4 Enabling Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:It is crucial to design economically active and stable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER). Herein, we present a novel and efficient Ar plasma-assisted strategy for the construction of octahedral Co-vacancy induced heteroatom Pt-filling and oxygen vacancy enriched dual-deficient Co3O4 spinel nanosheets arrays (D-Pt-Co3O4) to enhance HER performance. The Ar plasma technique can efficiently generate vacancies on the oxide surface. This induces the formation of Pt-filling and oxygen vacancy. Theoretical calculations show that the synergistic effect of filling Pt atoms with oxygen vacancies effectively improves the electronic conductivity and optimizes the energy barriers. Meanwhile, the Pt atoms and Co atoms (mainly octahedral Co sites) act as active sites, contributing to the improved performance. A low overpotential of 27mV is required for the D-Pt-Co3O4 at 10mAcm-2 in alkaline HER, outperforming that of the commercial Pt/C, and the turnover frequency under alkaline conditions is significantly improved. The present method highlights the concept of differential adsorption sites in vacancy-enhanced noble metal atom filling metal oxide catalysts for boosting hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Abstract The oxidized platinum (Pt) can exhibit better electrocatalytic activity than metallic Pt 0 in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which has aroused great interest in exploring the role of oxygen in Pt-based catalysts. Herein, we select two structurally well-defined polyoxometalates Na 5 [H 3 Pt (IV) W 6 O 24 ] (PtW 6 O 24 ) and Na 3 K 5 [Pt (II) 2 (W 5 O 18 ) 2 ] (Pt 2 (W 5 O 18 ) 2 ) as the platinum oxide model to investigate the HER performance. Electrocatalytic experiments show the mass activities of PtW 6 O 24 /C and Pt 2 (W 5 O 18 ) 2 /C are 20.175 A mg −1 and 10.976 A mg −1 at 77 mV, respectively, which are better than that of commercial 20% Pt/C (0.398 A mg −1 ). The in situ synchrotron radiation experiments and DFT calculations suggest that the elongated Pt-O bond acts as the active site during the HER process, which can accelerate the coupling of proton and electron and the rapid release of H 2 . This work complements the knowledge boundary of Pt-based electrocatalytic HER, and suggests another way to update the state-of-the-art electrocatalyst.

Abstract:The supported Pt and WOx catalysts are widely studied for the hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol. Nevertheless, the promoting role of W species remains unclear owing to the complexity in ternary hybrid catalysts. Herein, tungsten oxides (WO3 .0.33H(2)O) with the varying quantities of oxygen vacancy (V-o) were successfully synthesized and directly used as a support for loading Pt. The platinum loading high oxygen vacancies (H-WO3) containing V-o in abundance showed much higher catalytic activity and selectivity than that for low oxygen vacancies (L-WO3). The uniform dispersion of Pt particles, the high acidity, and the strong Pt and support interaction observed on Pt/H-WO3 are associated with the existence of V-o in a large amount, resulting in the significant enhancement in the catalytic performance. A plausible model for glycerol hydrogenolysis on Pt/ H-WO3 was proposed, wherein the unsaturated W ions coordinate with two terminal -OH groups of a glycerol molecule, and the secondary -OH group was protonated by the B acid from the Pt-(WOx)(n)-H as well as the in situ generated H delta+ species.

Abstract:Although Pt is a widely adopted commercial catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), its practical application is greatly limited by its prohibitive cost and high energy barrier for H 2 O dissociation in alkaline media. Herein, an ultrafine Pt-based catalyst decorated with oxygenophilic Ni-sites is rationally designed and successfully synthesized with Pt 5 (GS) 10 (HGS = l -reduced glutathione) nanocluster precursor. The optimized Ni-decorated Pt catalyst (Ni-Pt-C-500) with ultrafine nanoparticles (about 1.6 nm) exhibits a low overpotential (14.0 mV) at 10 mA cm −2 and a mild Tafel slope of 20.8 mV dec −1 in the HER, which is superior to its undecorated counterpart (Pt-C-500), the commercial 20 wt% Pt/C catalyst and most of the previously reported Pt-based electrocatalysts. Experimental observations and theoretical calculations indicate that H 2 O could be spontaneously adsorbed to Ni-sites of the Ni-Pt-C-500 catalyst. Mechanistic studies reveal that Ni-sites promote HER by accelerating the kinetic of H 2 O cleavage and optimizing the electronic structure of Pt. This work paves a new avenue for designing other ultrafine hybrid electrocatalysts based on metal nanoclusters to enhance catalytic reaction kinetics.

Abstract:Summary Establishing the mean normal prothrombin time (MNPT) from fresh samples for prothrombin ratios and INR often presents difficulty in selection and collection of donors. A set of seven lyophilized normal plasmas has therefore been prepared at the ECAA Central Facility and studied at 143 laboratories in sixteen European states using coagulometers in serial field exercises. All centres tested either the high ISI ECAA rabbit or low ISI ECAA human reference thromboplastin. The MNPT of fresh plasmas and means of the lyophilized samples were closely comparable with most routine rabbit thromboplastins. Using human thromboplastins means with the lyophilized normals were marginally but significantly longer and with the bovine Thrombotest significantly shorter than the MNPT of fresh plasmas causing alterations in INR. There was no appreciable effect on INR of 2.5 and 3.5 when lyophilized normals were substituted for fresh normals with the rabbit reagents.

Abstract:The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a pivotal element of electrochemical water splitting which is able to produce clean hydrogen as an alternative to fossil fuel. Developing efficient Pt-based electrocatalysts for the HER to work at all pHs is highly desirable, however, still a significant challenge, especially in alkaline conditions due to sluggish water dissociation and OHad transfer. Here, a new strategy for making a class of amorphous WOx-surface decorated PtNi@Pt dendritic nanowires (WOx-PtNi@Pt DNWs) to achieve highly efficient pH-universal HER electrocatalysis is reported. The as-made WOx-PtNi@Pt DNWs display superior HER performance with the overpotentials of 24, 5, and 22 mV in 0.1 m KOH, 0.1 m HClO4, and 0.5 m phosphate-buffered saline, respectively, at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2). The mass activity of WOx-PtNi@Pt DNWs in alkaline conditions is 3.3 mA mu g(Pt)(-1) at an overpotential of 70 mV, among the best in all the reported materials. Theoretical calculations confirm the introduction of WOx to the PtNi DNWs plays a pivotal role in promoting the efficient electron transfer for the alkaline and acidic HER. The activation of the PtNi region within the Pt-Ni-W-O interface is achieved by the WOx induced strain effect, which guarantees the superior performance in the HER.

Abstract:The Co‐doped WO3 loaded with Pt nanoparticles under ammonia treatment exhibits excellent activity and stability for acidic hydrogen production at industrial current density. Developing durable electrocatalysts with high performance for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acid conditions is of prime challenge for hydrogen production. Durability is of important prerequisite for catalyst application. Herein, this work constructs the Co‐doped WO3 loaded with Pt nanoparticles under ammonia treatment (Pt/N‐CoWO3) with the Pt‐N/O‐W interaction, which shows excellent activity and stability for acidic hydrogen production at industrial current density. The electronic structure of Pt species is modulated with enhanced Pt‐N/O bonding by Co doping, hence reinforcing the metal‐support interaction, and greatly enhancing the stability of the catalyst under high current density in acidic media. The resultant Pt/N‐CoWO3 catalyst exhibits the overpotentials of only 94 and 108 mV at high current densities of 1 and 2 A cm−2, respectively. More impressively, Pt/N‐CoWO3 delivers a record operation for acid electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution over 2000 h at 1 A cm−2, denoting its potential for catalyst applications at the industrial current density. This work opens a new avenue for developing Pt‐loading acidic HER catalysts for long‐term operation at ampere‐level current densities in acid conditions.

Abstract:The Platinum（Pt）-based catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction（HER） while suffering from poor stability due to the weak interaction between the carbon support and Pt.Herein,a molybdenum-doped titanium dioxide(Ti 0.9 Mo 0.1 O 2 ) supported low-Pt electrocatalyst with stronger interaction between catalyst and support is applied to tune the electrocatalytic performance of Pt.The Ti 0.9 Mo 0.1 O 2 support can not only tolerate the corrosion environment in the catalytic system,but also generate strong metal-support inte raction（SMSI） between the oxide and catalyst.A facile solvothermal method is used to prepare Ti 0.9 Mo 0.1 O 2 as support to anchor Pt nanoparticles.The 5% Pt supported on Ti 0.9 Mo 0.1 O 2 catalyst exhibits 4.4-fold mass activity（MA） at an overpotential of 50 mV and higher stability than 20% Pt/C with only 1/4 Pt loading.The SMSI between the Ti 0.9 Mo 0.1 O 2 and Pt prevents the Pt aggregation to achieve excellent stability,and hydrogen spillover effect in the interface between Pt and support benefits the hydrogen production process.This work presents a novel sight for the fabrication and design of oxide supported catalysts in various catalytic system by reasonably employing support effect.
Conversion of Catalytically Inert 2D Bismuth Oxide Nanosheets for Effective Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Catalysis via Oxygen Vacancy Concentration Modulation

Abstract:Abstract Oxygen vacancies ( V o ) in electrocatalysts are closely correlated with the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. The role of vacancy defects and the effect of their concentration, however, yet remains unclear. Herein, Bi 2 O 3 , an unfavorable electrocatalyst for the HER due to a less than ideal hydrogen adsorption Gibbs free energy (Δ G H* ), is utilized as a perfect model to explore the function of V o on HER performance. Through a facile plasma irradiation strategy, Bi 2 O 3 nanosheets with different V o concentrations are fabricated to evaluate the influence of defects on the HER process. Unexpectedly, while the generated oxygen vacancies contribute to the enhanced HER performance, higher V o concentrations beyond a saturation value result in a significant drop in HER activity. By tunning the V o concentration in the Bi 2 O 3 nanosheets via adjusting the treatment time, the Bi 2 O 3 catalyst with an optimized oxygen vacancy concentration and detectable charge carrier concentration of 1.52 × 10 24 cm −3 demonstrates enhanced HER performance with an overpotential of 174.2 mV to reach 10 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 80 mV dec −1 , and an exchange current density of 316 mA cm −2 in an alkaline solution, which approaches the top-tier activity among Bi-based HER electrocatalysts. Density-functional theory calculations confirm the preferred adsorption of H* onto Bi 2 O 3 as a function of oxygen chemical potential (∆ μ O ) and oxygen partial potential ( P O2 ) and reveal that high V o concentrations result in excessive stability of adsorbed hydrogen and hence the inferior HER activity. This study reveals the oxygen vacancy concentration-HER catalytic activity relationship and provides insights into activating catalytically inert materials into highly efficient electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Platinum (Pt) catalyst is the core of current industrial catalysts and the holy grail for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Previous studies have revealed that the HER activity of oxidized Pt is better than that of metal Pt 0 . Yet the relationship between the Pt–O structure and the catalytic activity has not been well explained to date. Herein, we report a new metastable platinum oxide, which achieved a low overpotential of 12 mV at a current density of −10 mA per square centimetre in acidic HER. DFT calculations showed that the [Pt–O] active site could be easily attacked by protons to form the Pt–H intermediate state during the HER and the adsorbed H could easily combine with any H atoms on adjacent O to form H 2 .

Oxygen-Vacancy-Induced Enhancement of BiVO4 Bifunctional Photoelectrochemical Activity for Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Hydrogen generation via photoelectrochemical (PEC) overall water splitting is an attractive means of renewable energy production so developing and designing the cost-effective and high-activity bifunctional PEC catalysts both for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has been focused on. Based on first-principles calculations, we propose a feasible strategy to enhance either HER or OER performance in the monoclinic exposed BiVO4 (110) facet by the introduction of oxygen vacancies (Ovacs). Our results show that oxygen vacancies induce charge rearrangements, which enhances charge transfer between active sites and adatoms. Furthermore, the incorporation of oxygen vacancies reduces the work function of the system, which makes charge transfer from the inner to the surface more easily; thus, the charges possess stronger redox capacity. As a result, the Ovac reduces both the hydrogen adsorption-free energy (ΔGH*) for the HER and the overpotential for the OER, facilitating the PEC activity of overall water splitting. The findings provide not only a method to develop bifunctional PEC catalysts based on BiVO4 but also insight into the mechanism of enhanced catalytic performance.

Abstract:Exploring efficient and economical electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction is of great significance for water splitting on an industrial scale. Tungsten oxide, WO3, has been long expected to be a promising non-precious-metal electrocatalyst for hydrogen production. However, the poor intrinsic activity of this material hampers its development. Herein, we design a highly efficient hydrogen evolution electrocatalyst via introducing oxygen vacancies into WO3 nanosheets. Our first-principles calculations demonstrate that the gap states introduced by O vacancies make WO3 act as a degenerate semiconductor with high conductivity and desirable hydrogen adsorption free energy. Experimentally, we prepared WO3 nanosheets rich in oxygen vacancies via a liquid exfoliation, which indeed exhibits the typical character of a degenerate semiconductor. When evaluated by hydrogen evolution, the nanosheets display superior performance with a small overpotential of 38 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a low Tafel slope of 38 mV dec-1. This work opens an effective route to develop conductive tungsten oxide as a potential alternative to the state-of-the-art platinum for hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Inspired by the phenomenon of hydrogen spillover in heterogeneous catalysis, the well‐designed Ru/WCx not only improved the H2O dissociation process by facilitating contact between activated hydrogen and WCx sites, but also increased hydrogen production via hydrogen spillover on Ru sites. The optimal Ru/WCx demonstrates ultra‐high HER performance with an overpotential of only 9 mV at 10 mA·cm−2. Tungsten carbide (WCx) is a promising alternative to platinum catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, strong tungsten–hydrogen bond hinders hydrogen desorption while favoring H+ reduction, thus limiting HER kinetics. Inspired by the phenomenon of hydrogen spillover in heterogeneous catalysis, a ruthenium (Ru) doped‐driven activated hydrogen migration from WCx surface to Ru is reported. This approach achieved high activity with an ultralow overpotential of 9.0 mV at 10 mA·cm−2 and superior stability at an industrial‐grade current density of 1.0 A·cm−2 @ 1.65 V. In situ attenuated total reflectance surface‐enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR‐SEIRAS) and operando electrochemical impedance spectra revealed that this exceptional hydrogen production—which surpasses that of previously reported Pt/C catalysts—is attributable to the outstanding ability of WCx to induce water dissociation and hydrogen spillover from WCx to Ru surface. During the HER process, the rigid interfacial water network negatively affected the HER efficiency under alkaline conditions. The WCx sites disrupted this rigid structure, facilitating the contact between activated hydrogen (H*) and WCx sites. Subsequently, H* migrates to Ru surface, where hydrogen recombination occurs to produce H2. This work paves a new avenue for the construction of coupled catalysts at the atomic scale to facilitate HER electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Pd-based catalysts are crucial in direct formate fuel cells owing to their high stability and selectivity for the formate oxidation reaction (FOR) to CO2, avoiding carbonaceous poisoning species (e.g., COad, CHx) in alkaline media. However, the kinetics of Pd-based electrocatalysts are considerably impeded by the unfavorable adsorption of hydrogen species (Had), which serve as the primary intermediators and occlude the active sites. Herein, we crafted electron-rich Pd nanoparticles on a TiO2 support with oxygen vacancies (Pd/Ov-TiO2) to improve Had desorption. The as-prepared Pd/Ov-TiO2 exhibited a high mass activity of 4.16 A mgPd –1, outperforming Pd/TiO2 without oxygen vacancies and commercial Pd/C by 1.41 and 2.72 times, respectively. Experimental characterizations and density functional theory calculations revealed that the oxygen-vacant TiO2 can concurrently downshift the d-band center of Pd and facilitate hydrogen spillover, thereby accelerating Had desorption and FOR kinetics. Our findings provide a strategy to refine Pd-based catalysts for broader electrochemical uses.
