Abstract:The shuttle effect caused by polysufides dissolution and diffusion in electrolyte solutions severely hinders the practical application of LiS batteries. To overcome this problem for achieving long cycle life and high rate performance, anchoring materials are highly desirable. In this work, for the first time, we explore the anchoring behaviors of polysulfides on C3B and C3N monolayers with reference to pristine graphene by using density functional theory computations. The complicated anchoring mechanisms are further explored by analyzing the competition between van der Waals, electrostatic, and chemical interactions. Our results suggest that C3B monolayer shows the best anchoring performance for lithium polysulfides due to the strong chemical interaction induced by charge transfer while C3N monolayer has relative weak anchoring effect due to the electrostatic interaction. Based on the enhanced conductivity, strong anchoring ability, and improved rate capability, C3B monolayer shows the promise as an anchoring material for lithium-sulfur batteries.

Abstract:High energy density, low cost, and environmental friendliness are required for modern energy-storage technologies. The anchoring performance of newly fabricated porous triphenylene-graphdiyne (TPGDY), boron-graphdiyne (BGDY), and nitrogen-graphdiyne (NDGY-C18N6, NGDY-C24N4, and NGDY-C36N6) monolayers are studied by employing density functional theory (DFT). It is found that the porous graphdiyne-based materials offer more space to accommodate lithium polysulfides with moderate adsorption energies and the anchoring performance changes with substrate and the size of Li2Sn molecules: BGDY has a strong chemical interaction with lithium polysulfides due to the large charge transfer as compared to others. The chemical interaction dominates in anchoring species Li2Sn with small size (n = 1, 2), whereas vdW interaction dominates for S8 and larger size Li2Sn (n = 6, 8) species. Furthermore, anchoring lithium polysulfides reduces the band gaps of the graphdiyne-based materials and enhances the electronic conductivity. These intriguing features suggest that graphdiyne-based porous 2D structures are promising anchoring materials for lithium-sulfur batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is blocked to implement as a practical energy storage device ascribes to the shuttle effect during charging and discharging processes. To solve the shuttle effect problem, one feasible method is to design a suitable anchoring material on the electrode. In this study, we explore the potential application of the BNP2 monolayer as an anchoring material through the first-principles calculation method. The results show that BNP2 with adequate adsorption energies (from 0.71 eV to 3.60 eV) can inhibit the shuttle effect without causing lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) decomposition. Then, by analyzing the projected density of states, it can be found that the property of BNP2 has been changed from a semiconductor to metal after adsorbing LiPSs, which is conducive to improving the electrical conductivity of the system. Moreover, due to the low cleavage energy barrier for the conversion of Li2S2 into Li2S, it not only improves the conversion efficiency but also avoids the waste of active substances. Finally, the low energy barrier for the catalytic decomposition of Li2S and the fast diffusion of the Li atom on the substrate accelerates the entire electrochemical process, thereby promoting the cycle performance and coulombic efficiency of Li-S batteries. In view of these advantages, it could expect that the BNP2 monolayer is an excellent anchoring material for Li-S batteries.

Abstract:One of the major challenging issues in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries is that the lithium polysulfides easily dissolve in the electrolyte and shuttle between anode and cathode. To overcome this problem, an ideal anchoring materials is urgent. In the current work, we explore the potential application of BC2N allotropes (approximated by Type-I and Type-II structures) as anchoring materials for Li-S batteries by using first-principles method with van der Waals interaction. Type-I is a direct-bandgap semiconductor, while type-II is semi-metallic due to inversion symmetry of its structure. They show remarkable but not too strong chemical interaction with S8 and Li2Sx clusters and enhanced electrical conductivity. In addition, the introduction of dopants and defects result in semiconductor-to-metal transition on type-I BC2N, and enhancement of binding energies and still keep intact Li2Sx clusters. Our findings demonstrate that defective and doped BC2N monolayers are promising anchoring materials for Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are highly expected because of their high theoretical specific capacity and energy density. However, its application still faces challenges, including the shuttle effect affecting the sulfur reduction reaction, the high decomposition energy barrier of Li2S during charging, the volume change of sulfur, and the poor conductivity during charging and discharging. Here, combined with density functional theory and particle swarm optimization algorithm for the nitrogen carbide monolayer structural search (CmN8-m, m = 1-8), the surprising discovery is that a single metal-atom-doped C6N2 monolayer could effectively accelerate the conversion of lithium polysulfide and anchor lithium polysulfide during discharging and decrease the decomposition energy barrier of Li2S during charging. This "anchoring and catalyzing" mechanism effectively reduces the shuttle effect and greatly improves the reaction kinetics. Among a series of metal atoms, Cr is the best doping element, and it exhibits suitable adsorption energy for polysulfides and the lowest decomposition energy barrier for Li2S. This work opens up a new way for the development of transition-metal-doped carbon-nitrogen materials with an excellent catalytic activity for lithium polysulfide as cathode materials for Li-S batteries.

Abstract:In the present work, a theoretical design for the viability of bilayer C4N3 (bi-C4N3) as a promising host material for Li-Se battery was conducted utilizing first-principles calculations. The AA- and AB-stacking configurations of bilayer C4N3 can effectively inhibit the shuttling of high-order polyselenides through the synergistic effect of physical confinement and strong Li-N bonds. Compared to conventional electrolytes, the AA- and AB-stacking bilayer C4N3 demonstrate enhanced adsorption capabilities for the polyselenides. The anchored structures of Se-8 or Li2Sen (n = 1, 2, 4, 6, 8) molecules within the bilayer C4N3 exhibit high electrical conductivities, which are beneficial for enhancing the electrochemical performance. The catalytic effects of AA- and AB-stacking bilayer C4N3 were investigated by the reduction of Se-8 and the energy barrier associated with the decomposition of Li2Se. The AA- and AB-stacking bilayer C4N3 can significantly decrease the activation barrier and promote the decomposition of Li2Se. The mean square displacement (MSD) curves reveal the pronounceably sluggish Li-ions diffusions in polyselenides within the AA- and AB-stacking bilayer C4N3, which in turn demonstrates the notable prospects in mitigating the shuttle effect.

Abstract:The application prospects of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are constrained by many challenges, especially the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (Li2S x). Recently, microporous covalent organic framework (COF) materials have been used to anchor electrodes in Li-S batteries, because of their preferable characteristics, such as self-design ability, suitable pore size, and various active groups. To identify the ideal anchoring materials that can effectively restrain the shuttle of Li2S x species, the anchoring mechanism between COF materials and Li2S x species should be investigated in depth. Therefore, we systematically investigated the anchoring mechanism between specific COF nanomaterials (consisting of boron and oxygen atoms and benzene group) and Li2S x ( x = 1, 2, 4, 6, or 8) species on the surface and inside the pore using density functional theory methods with van der Waals interactions. The detailed analysis of the adsorption energy, difference charge density, charge transfer, and atomic density of states can be used to determine that the COF nanomaterials, with the structure of boroxine connecting to benzene groups and boroxine groups not constructed at the corner of the structure, can effectively anchor the Li2S x series. Accordingly, this study provides the theoretical basis for the molecular-scale design of ideal anchoring materials, which can be useful to improve the performance of the Li-S batteries.
Understanding the Anchoring Effect of Two-Dimensional Layered Materials for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:Although the rechargeable lithium-sulfur battery system has attracted significant attention due to its high theoretical specific energy, its implementation has been impeded by multiple challenges, especially the dissolution of intermediate lithium polysulfide (Li2Sn) species into the electrolyte. Introducing anchoring materials, which can induce strong binding interaction with Li2Sn species, has been demonstrated as an effective way to overcome this problem and achieve long-term cycling stability and high-rate performance. The interaction between Li2Sn species and anchoring materials should be studied at the atomic level in order to understand the mechanism behind the anchoring effect and to identify ideal anchoring materials to further improve the performance of Li-S batteries. Using first-principles approach with van der Waals interaction included, we systematically investigate the adsorption of Li2Sn species on various two-dimensional layered materials (oxides, sulfides, and chlorides) and study the detailed interaction and electronic structure, including binding strength, configuration distortion, and charge transfer. We gain insight into how van der Waals interaction and chemical binding contribute to the adsorption of Li2Sn species for anchoring materials with strong, medium, and weak interactions. We understand why the anchoring materials can avoid the detachment of Li2S as in carbon substrate, and we discover that too strong binding strength can cause decomposition of Li2Sn species.
Ordered porous metal oxide embedded dense carbon network design as high-performance interlayer for stable lithium-sulfur batteries

Abstract:The design of multifunctional interlayer is important for the suppression of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) shuttle effect in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Herein, a multifunctional interlayer fabrication strategy is developed by depositing ordered porous metal oxide embedded with nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNT) on the carbon nanofibers (CNFs) skeleton. In this design strategy, three-dimensional ordered macroporous N, Co-doped titanium oxides (N,Co-TiOx) is uniformly deposited on CNFs network, then in-situ growth of NCNT is implemented within the ordered porous oxides framework and CNFs, forming dense-structured adsorption/catalytic multifunctional interlayer (N,Co-TiOx/NCNT@CNFs). The ordered porous N,Co-TiOx together with the implemented NCNT not only provides an effective physical barrier for polysulfides diffusion, but also offers strong chemical interaction with LiPSs adsorption and promoted catalytic conversion kinetics. With these merits, the Li-S battery with N,Co-TiOx/NCNT@CNFs interlayer delivers an impressive rate capability of 638 mAh g-1 at a current density of 5 C. The cell also shows excellent cycling performance with a capacity decay of 0.033 % per cycle after 500 cycles at 1 C. More importantly, the Li-S pouch cells with N,Co-TiOx/NCNT@CNFs interlayer achieve a capacity of 806 mA h g−1 at sulfur loading of 4.0 mg cm−2 after 50 cycles at 0.1 C. This ordered porous metal oxide embedded dense carbon network design provides alternative strategy for the development of high-performance Li-S batteries interlayer.

Abstract:Polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) materials have been identified as promising host materials for lithium‑selenium (LiSe) batteries due to the capability of suppressing the shuttle effect of high-order polyselenides. In the present work, the viability of bilayer C3N3 (AA-/AB-stacking bilayer C3N3) as host material for LiSe batteries was conducted utilizing first-principles calculations. The computational results show that the AA-stacking bilayer C3N3 demonstrates enhanced anchoring interactions for the high-order polyselenides due to the synergistic effect of physical confinement and strong LiN bonds. Compared with the conventional electrolytes, the polyselenides prefer to anchor within the AA- and AB-stacking bilayer C3N3 instead of interacting with electrolytes, which in turn demonstrates the ability of the bilayer C3N3 in suppressing shuttle effect of high-order polyselenides. The anchored structures of Se8 or Li2Se n (n = 1, 2, 4, 6, 8) molecules within the bilayer C3N3 exhibit high electrical conductivities, which contributes to the improved electrochemical performance of LiSe batteries. In addition, the catalytic effect of AA- and AB-stacking bilayer C3N3 was investigated in terms of the reduction of Se8 and the energy barrier associated with the decomposition of Li2Se. The results indicate that the AA-stacking bilayer C3N3 structure is more advantageous in improving the utilization of selenium active material and promoting the conversion of solid phase Li2Se. Our present work not only unveils a theoretical basis for the study of bilayer C3N3 but also provides some ideas for the design of host materials for high-performance LiSe batteries.

Abstract:In recent years, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have attracted tremendous attention as a promising candidate for the next generation recharged battery because of the high theoretical capacity and theoretical specific energy density. However, the severe shuttle effect and poor conductivity of polysulfides greatly hinder the practical application of Li-S batteries. In this study, we have employed the first-principles calculations to propose a promising anchoring material of boron-phosphide (BP) monolayer for Li-S batteries. The anchoring behaviors and electronic properties of lithium polysulfides on the BP monolayer have been investigated. The results verify that the BP monolayer can be regarded as a moderate anchoring material because the adsorption energy of the polysulfide species on the BP monolayer is in the range of 0.57-2.85 eV. Such a moderate anchoring material is suggested to be the best choice for battery electrode. By analyzing the components of van der Waals, electrostatic and chemical interactions, the complicated anchoring mechanisms are explored. Furthermore, the adsorption of lithium polysulfides can reduce the band gap of BP monolayer, exhibiting enhanced performance of electronic conductivity. Our results of the good anchoring performance and the enhanced electronic conductivity suggest that the BP monolayer has great promise as a cathode anchoring material for Li-S batteries, which could inspire more experimental and theoretical studies to explore and develop the potential of other 2D sheets in energy storage systems.

Abstract:The development of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries is dogged by the rapid capacity decay arising from polysulfide dissolution and diffusion in organic electrolytes. To solve this critical issue, a praline-like flexible interlayer consisting of high-loading titanium oxide (TiO2 ) nanoparticles and relatively long carbon nanofibers is fabricated. TiO2 nanoparticles with a size gradient occupy both the external and internal of carbon fiber and serve as anchors that allow the chemical adsorption of polysulfides through a conductive nanoarchitecture. The porous conductive carbon backbone helps in the physical absorption of polysulfides and provides redox reaction sites to allow the polysulfides to be reused. More importantly, it offers enough mechanical strength to support a high load TiO2 nanoparticle (79 wt%) that maximizes their chemical role, and can accommodate the large volume changes. Significant enhancement in cycle stability and rate capability is achieved for a readily available sulfur/multi-walled carbon nanotube composite cathode simply by incorporating this hierarchically nanostructured interlayer. The design and synthesis of interlayers by in situ integration of metal oxides and carbon fibers via a simple route offers the potential to advance Li-S batteries for practical applications in the future.
Strong adsorption, catalysis and lithiophilic modulation of carbon nitride for lithium/sulfur battery

Abstract:Lithium/sulfur (Li/S) batteries have emerged as one of the most promising next-generation energy storage systems with advantages of high theoretical energy density, low cost and environmental friendliness. However, problems regarding to severe shuttle effect of soluble polysulfide, poor electronic/ionic conductor of solid charged/discharged products (S8 and Li2S), and fatal swell of volume along with the growth of Li dendrites greatly deteriorate the sulfur utilization and capacity retention during extended charge-discharge cycles. With advantages of high nitrogen content, lithiophilic modulation and tunable charge density and charge transfer, carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has played a positive role in restricting the shuttle effects and dendrite formation. This minireview mainly discusses these research achievements of g-C3N4 in Li/S batteries, aiming to provide a basic understanding and direct guidance for further research and development of functionalized g-C3N4 materials in electrical energy storage. The two-dimensional (2D) structure of g-C3N4 with abundant hierarchical pores improves its accommodation capacity for sulfur by effectively confining the lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) into the pores, and provides favorable channels for ion diffusion. The rich nitrogen and carbon defects further offer more active sites for strongly adsorbing LiPSs and bridge electron transfer pathway at atomic scale for catalytic reactions to accelerate redox kinetics of Li/S conversion chemistry. Moreover, the features of lithiophilic wettability, high adsorption energy and densely distributed lithiophilic N of g-C3N4 provide a large number of adhesive sites for lithium cation (Li+) and disperse the nucleation sites to enable uniform nucleation and deposition of Li on the anode surface and to suppress formation and growth of Li dendrites. Finally, the g-C3N4 also effectively regulates the wettability between Li anode and solid inorganic electrolyte, and reduces the crystallinity of solid polymer electrolyte to enhance the Li+ migration ability and ionic conductivity.

The unique 3D architectures not only provide a highly conductive network for fast electron transfer and buffer the volume change upon lithiation–delithiation process but also endow rich interface with full exposure of Co–N 4 active sites to boost the lithium polysulfides adsorption and conversion. Owing to the accelerated kinetics and suppressed shuttle effect, the as-prepared sulfur cathode exhibits a superior electrochemical performance with a high reversible specific capacity of 695 mAh g −1 at 5 C and a low capacity fading rate of 0.053% per cycle over 500 cycles at 1 C. This work may provide a promising solution for the design of an advanced sulfur-based cathode toward high-performance Li–S batteries.

Hierarchically Porous Nitrogen-Doped Carbon As Cathode for Lithium–sulfur Batteries

Abstract:Porous nitrogen-doped carbon is an especially promising material energy storage due to its excellent conductivity, stable physicochemical properties, easy processability, controllable porosity and low price. Herein, we reported a novel well-designed hierarchically porous nitrogen-doped carbon (HPNC) via a combination of salt template (ZnCl2) and hard template (SiO2) as sulfur host for lithium-sulfur batteries. The low-melting ZnCl2 is boiled off and leaves behind micropores and small size mesopores during pyrolysis process, while the silica spheres are removed by acid leaching to generate interconnected 3D network of macropores. The HPNC-S electrode exhibits an initial specific capacity of 1355 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C (1 C =1675 mAh g(-1)), a high-rate capability of 623 mAh g(-1) at 2 C, and a small decay of 0.13% per cycle over 300 cycles at 0.2 C. This excellent rate capability and remarkable long-term cyclability of the HPNC-S electrode are attributed to its hierarchical porous structures for confining the soluble lithium polysulfide as well as the nitrogen doping for high absorbability of lithium polysulfide.
