Abstract:High performance and low-cost electrocatalysts for overall water splitting, i.e., catalyzing hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions with the same material, are of great importance for large-scale, renewable energy conversion processes. Here, we report an ultrafast (~ 7 ms) synthesis technique for transition metal chalcogenide nanoparticles assisted by high temperature treatment. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate that cobalt sulfide (~ 20 nm in diameter)@ few-layer graphene (~ 2 nm in thickness) core-shell nanoparticles embedded in RGO nanosheets exhibit remarkable bifunctional electrocatalytic activity and stability for overall water splitting, which is comparable to commercial 40 wt.% platinum/carbon (Pt/C) electrocatalysts. After 60 h of continuous operation, 10 mA·cm−2 water splitting current density can still be achieved at a low potential of ~ 1.77 V without any activity decay, which is among the most active for non-noble material based electrocatalysts. The presented study provides prospects in synthesizing highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for large-scale energy conversion application via a simple yet efficient technique.

Abstract:The solar-driven water splitting process is highly attractive for alternative energy utilization, while developing efficient, earth-abundant, bifunctional catalysts for both oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction has remained as a major challenge. Herein, we develop an ordered CoMnO@CN superlattice structure as an efficient bifunctional water-splitting electrocatalyst, in which uniform Co-Mn oxide (CoMnO) nanoparticles are coated with a thin, continuous nitrogen-doped carbon (CN) framework. The CoMnO nanoparticles enable optimized OER activity with effective electronic structure configuration, and the CN framework serves as an excellent HER catalyst. Importantly, the ordered superlattice structure is beneficial for enhanced reactive sites, efficient charge transfer, and structural stability. This bifunctional superlattice catalyst manifests optimized current densities and electrochemical stability in overall water splitting, outperforming most of the previously reported single- or bifunctional electrocatalysts. Combining with a silicon photovoltaic cell, this CoMnO@CN superlattice bifunctional catalyst enables unassisted solar water splitting continuously for ∼5 days with a solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of ∼8.0%. Our discovery suggests that these transition metal oxide-based superlattices may serve as a unique structure modality for efficient bifunctional water splitting electrocatalysts with scale-up potentials.

Abstract:The rational design of effective bifunctional electrocatalysts with good morphology, structure, and unique electronic properties, is crucial for efficient overall water splitting. Herein, a zinc-doped cobalt phosphide (CoP) nanosheet catalyst (Zn-CoP/CF) with a three-dimensional nanoarray structure in situ grown on a cobalt foam (CF) substrate was synthesized via a hydrothermal and gas-phase phosphatizing two-step route. Benefitting from the large specific surface area, numerous active sites, and the regulation of electron distribution between metals, Zn-CoP/CF requires low overpotentials of 327 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction and 440 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction at 1000 mA cm −2 . Moreover, a small cell voltage of 2.01 V is attained to achieve the current density of 1000 mA cm −2 for overall water splitting. This work provides a new idea for improving the intrinsic activity of electrocatalysts and demonstrates the potential of effectively constructing optimized electronic structures in the synthesis of high-current density electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Developing highly efficient noble-metal-free bifunctional nanocatalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting is attractive but challenging. Notably, the rational structure engineering could effectively promote electronic transfer and improve the active area. Herein, a free-standing N-doped porous carbon nanosheet arrays encap-sulated with metallic Co nanoparticles electrocatalyst (Co@NC-A) for overall water splitting was designed via pyrolysis process followed with acid treatment. The N-doped carbon matrix not only enhances electron mobility and protects the metallic Co nanoparticles from electrolyte corrosion, but also improves the electrochemically active area and facilitates mass transfer. Consequently, the Co@NC-A exhibits superior electrocatalytic perfor-mance toward OER (ri10 = 270 mV) and HER (ri10 = 162 mV) in 1 M KOH. Moreover, the Co@NC-A as a bifunctional catalyst in overall water splitting could approach 10 mA cm-2 at a cell voltage of 1.66 V and operate stably for 50 h. Combined with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the improvement of the HER and OER activities is also attributed to the modified electronic structure with N-doped carbon and the optimized free energy toward the adsorption/desorption of intermediates. This work provides a novel and facile non-precious metal catalyst for water splitting and should be instructive for designing more carbon-based nanocatalysts.

Abstract:Constructing heterostructured electrocatalysts has proven effective in enhancing intrinsic catalytic activity. Herein, under guidance of theoretical calculations, hierarchical porous quasi-hexagonal Co 2 P nanosheets/Co heterostructures supported on carbon cloth (Co 2 P/Co/CC) with a high surface area were rationally designed and elaborately constructed through electroless Co plating, electrochemical oxidation, and phosphidation process, which showed significant electrocatalytic performance toward water electrolysis. Specifically, theoretical calculations revealed that the Co 2 P/Co heterostructure adjusted the electronic structure of Co 2 P and Co, reducing the energy barrier for target reactions and thereby boosting electrocatalytic activities for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Notably, the typical Co 2 P/Co/CC catalyst demonstrated impressive HER performance, with low overpotentials of only 52 and 48 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1.0 M KOH solutions, respectively. The remarkable electrocatalytic performance of the catalyst can be attributed to the improved intrinsic activity resulting from the Co 2 P/Co heterostructures and the highly exposed active sites provided by the hierarchical porous structures. Furthermore, the Co 2 P/Co/CC catalyst exhibited excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance in alkaline electrolyte, requiring a low overpotential of only 306 mV to achieve a current density of 100 mA/cm 2 . Additionally, a two-electrode electrolyzer assembled with the Co 2 P/Co/CC electrodes achieved a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 at a low cell voltage of 1.54 V and demonstrated excellent long-term stability. This work presents a novel and feasible strategy for constructing hierarchical heterostructured electrocatalysts that enable efficient water electrolysis. By combining rational design and theoretical guidance, our approach offers promising prospects for advancing the field of electrocatalysis and facilitating sustainable energy conversion.

Abstract:The development of promising bifunctional water splitting electrocatalysts through precise design of composition and structure is a challenging topic. In this work, a novel junction is developed consisting of pure-phase CoP nanoparticles in-situ grown on Co3(Si2O5)2(OH)4 nanosheets, denoted as CoP/CSNSs. Rely on the small adding Co2+ (0.1 mmol) in complex precursor, controllable synthesis of pure-phase CoP without impure phases is achieved, and the perfect nanosheet structure from support can be inherited, the CoP/CSNSs therefore shows the highest electrocatalytic performance for both HER and OER in 1.0 M KOH. Besides, the overall water splitting voltage of CoP/CSNSs(+/-) delivers 1.50 V at 10 mA cm-2, which outperforms that of the commercial Pt/C||RuO2 system. The preferable bifunctional electrocatalytic performance benefits from the optimized electron state of the adjacent dual-active centers, such that surficial CoP contributes to the dissociation of H-OH bonds boosting the Volmer step of HER, and Co3(Si2O5)2(OH)4 support contributes to OH- adsorption facilitating the kinetics of OER. Meanwhile, the advanced nanosheet structure provides more accessible active centers and more efficient charge/mass transport highway. In this work, bifunctional metal silicate electrocatalyst for water dissociation is designed and fabricated for the first time. The simple and effective phase-modulation and structure-control is a promising strategy for continually exploitation of multifunctional metal silicate electrocatalysts. The develop-ment of low-cost and highly efficient metal silicate-based electrocatalysts may create new opportunities for future development of renewable energy conversion technologies.

Abstract:Exploring highly efficient non‐noble‐metal‐based electrocatalysts for water electrocatalysis is vitally important to meet the requirement for future hydrogen energy. In this work, we report a simple metal‐organic‐frameworks‐based one‐step calcination route to the rational design of a multidimensional bifunctional electrocatalyst, constituting 0D CoP nanocrystals embedded in N, P‐doped binary carbon networks with 1D carbon hollow nanotube and 2D carbon porous nanosheet. The elaborate hierarchical architecture allows for high exposure of active sites and continuous electron/ion transport pathwaysf1.02. Together with the strong coupling effect between CoP and hybrid carbon matrices, the obtained electrocatalyst can efficiently catalyze both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. Specifically, low overpotentials of 103 and 260 mV are needed to deliver H 2 ‐evolving current of 10 mA cm ‐2 and O 2 ‐evolving current of 30 mA cm ‐2 , respectively. Remarkably, an alkaline electrolyzer comprising this electrocatalyst drives 10 mA cm ‐2 at a low cell voltage of 1.54 V, outperforming the integrated benchmarking Pt/C+IrO 2 couple, along with steady durability. The current work introduces a new way of developing innovative transition metal phosphides/carbon nanostructures for electrocatalysis and other energy‐related applications.

Abstract:Developing highly efficient and sustainable bifunctional cheap electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial, but remains a challenge for large-scale water splitting applications. Appropriate surface engineering of non-noble metal electrocatalysts is essential for tuning their electrocatalytic properties. Herein, MnCoP nanosheets are designed and constructed by doping Mn into CoP via direct one-step electrodeposition on carbon cloth. Doping Mn can not only modify the surface electronic structure of CoP, but also enhance electrochemical surface areas (ECSA) to expose more accessible active sites, and increase the intrinsic activity for HER and OER. As a result, the electrocatalyst reasonably shows superior catalytic performance: the overpotential is as low as 65 mV for HER and 261 mV for OER in 1 M KOH solutions to deliver the current density of 10 mA cm(-2), along with outstanding stability benefited from the strong affinity between the catalyst and CC substrate. The electrolyzer cell for overall water splitting, using MnCoP/CC as both anode and cathode catalysts, exhibits a very low voltage of 1.62 V at 10 mA cm(-2) and excellent long-term durability within 24 h. This study offers a general method to produce high-performance and cost-effectiveness catalysts for water splitting and other catalytic fields.

Abstract:Developing efficient, low-price non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts for overall water splitting in alkaline medium remains a formidable challenge. In our work, Cr-doped CoP/Fe2P (Cr-CoP/Fe2P) flower-like microsphere was synthesized through a simple hydrothermal and phosphating process. The resulting Cr-CoP/Fe2P electrocatalyst shows significantly enhanced oxygen evolution reaction performance (262 mV @ 10 mA cm-2) and has a satisfactory hydrogen evolution reaction performance (114 mV @ 10 mA cm-2), coupled with favorable stability in an alkaline medium. Furthermore, when assembling Cr-CoP/Fe2P into an electrolytic cell, the two-electrode system can provide a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a voltage of 1.61 V. At high current density, the performance of the electrolytic cell composed of Cr-CoP/Fe2P is superior to that of noble metal catalyst electrode pair. Electronic structure analysis and various characterizations confirm that Cr doping and the formation of CoP/Fe2P heterogeneous interfaces redistribute the electron densities of the active sites, enlarge the specific surface area, and enhance the aerophobicity of the catalysts, thereby improving the electrocatalytic property. This work provides a referable method for engineering highly efficient and stable non-noble polymetallic phosphides, which serve as bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting.

Abstract:The rational design of efficacious and low-cost catalysts for water-splitting electrolysis is a key technology to produce hydrogen energy. Herein, CoP nanoparticles supported on nitrogen-doped vertical graphene sheets/carbon black composites (N-VGSs@CB/CoP) are fabricated, in which vertical graphene sheets (VGSs) are grown by facile thermal chemical vapor deposition. As hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) bifunctional electrocatalysts, N-VGSs@CB/CoP exhibits remarkable overpotentials of 114 and 256 mV at 10 mA/cm(2) for the HER and OER in the alkaline medium of 1 M KOH, respectively. Moreover, the assembled overall water-electrolyzing cell of N-VGSs@CB/CoP||N-VGSs@CB/CoP only requires 1.60 V at a current density of 10 mA/cm(2) for stable running for 40 h, which is compatible with expensive Pt/C||RuO2. The excellent performance is derived from highly conductive N-VGSs offering fast charge transfer for CoP activation sites. In addition, the multi-branched N-VGSs prevent the agglomeration of CoP nanoparticles and provide a large area to exert the catalytic activity of CoP.
Construction of CoP/Co 2 P Coexisting Bifunctional Self-Supporting Electrocatalysts for High-Efficiency Oxygen Evolution and Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Development of a low cost, high activity, and stable nonprecious metal bifunctional catalyst for electrocatalytic water cracking is a hot topic and big challenge. In this paper, we prepared a nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube (NCNT)-enhanced three-dimensional self-supported electrocatalyst with CoP and CoP coexistence by a two-step strategy of high-temperature carbonization and low-temperature phosphorylation. Furthermore, the induced three-dimensional carbon network skeleton facilitates rapid charge transfer. In addition, the active sites of the carbon foam (CF) are greatly increased by the construction of hollow structures. As a bifunctional electrocatalyst, CoP/CoP/NCNT@CF exhibited excellent catalytic activity for both hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline media, requiring low overpotentials of 133 and 289 mV to obtain a current density of 10 mA cm, respectively. Additionally, the synthesized catalysts also exhibit good long-term stability, maintaining high catalytic activity after 20 h of continuous operation. We also confirmed the main driving force to improve the electron transfer between the heterostructures of Co and P by XPS spectra. The excellent electrocatalytic performance can be attributed to the close synergy between the highly active CoP/CoP/NCNT and CF. This study provides a new strategy for the design of highly active bifunctional self-supporting electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The development of efficient, low-cost, and stable electrocatalysts for overall water splitting is of great significance for energy conversion. Transition-metal carbides (TMCs) with high catalytic activity and low cost have attracted great interests. Nevertheless, utilizing an efficient catalyst for overall water splitting is still a challenging issue for TMCs. Herein, we report the synthesis of a high-performance electrocatalyst comprising Co3ZnC and Co nanoparticles embedded in a nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube-grafted carbon polyhedral (Co3ZnC/Co-NCCP) by the pyrolysis of bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks in a reductive atmosphere of Ar/H2. The Co3ZnC/Co-NCCP exhibits remarkable electrochemical activity in catalyzing both the oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction, in terms of low overpotential and excellent stability. Furthermore, the Co3ZnC/Co-NCCP catalyst leads to a highly performed overall water splitting in the 1 M KOH electrolyte, delivering a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a low applied external potential of 1.65 V and shows good stability without obvious deactivation after 10 h operation. The present strategy opens a new avenue to the design of efficient electrocatalysts in electrochemical applications.

Abstract:Exploring high-efficiency and earth-abundant bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting is of great significance to meet the requirement of the hydrogen economy, but still faces many challenges. In this work, we propose the chemical etching, successive carbonization, and phosphorization treatment strategy of solid ZIF-67 (ZIF = zeolitic imidazole framework), constructing a hybrid nanostructure with CoP nanoparticles embedded in a hollow N-doped carbon nanocage (h-CoP@NC). The elaborate hollow porous structure is conducive to effectively exposing more active sites and shortening mass-transportation pathways. The nitrogen-doped carbon layer would protect the active CoP units from agglomeration and enhance the conductivity. These structural factors synergistically contribute to the enhanced electrocatalytic performance. As a result, the carbonization-temperature-optimized h-CoP@NC-900-300 catalyst can efficiently catalyze both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions with respective overpotentials of 196 and 339 mV to afford a current density of 10 mA cm–2, outperforming other contrast catalysts. Impressively, to comprise this optimal electrocatalyst into both an anode and cathode of the alkaline electrolyzer, a cell voltage of 1.764 V is needed for achieving a current density of 10 mA cm–2 with continuously operational ability. This present study would shed light on the exploration of advanced transition-metal-based electrocatalysts by composition and structure design for energy conversion applications.

Abstract:It is vital to develop efficient earth-abundant bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting to mitigate the global energy crisis and environmental pollution. Here, Mn and W dual transition metal co-doped CoP nanoflower arrays supported on nickel foam (Mn–W–CoP/NF) have been synthesized via the hydrothermal method and chemical vapor deposition. The unique nanoflower-type structure of Mn–W–CoP/NF facilitated high reactive-site exposure and efficient charge transfer. Consequently, Mn–W–CoP/NF exhibited excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic activity in alkaline electrolytes, with low overpotentials of 95.8 and 229.2 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction, respectively, at 10 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, it could be used to construct a two-electrode water-splitting electrolyzer exhibiting stable water splitting at a low cell voltage (1.57 V) at 10 mA cm −2 . This study could guide the design and development of efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for large-scale water-splitting applications.

Exploring CoP Core–shell Nanosheets by Fe and Zn Dual Cation Doping As Efficient Electrocatalysts for Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Developing cost-effective and highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great interest for overall water splitting but still remains a challenging issue. Herein, a self-template route is employed to fabricate a unique hybrid composite constructed by encapsulating cobalt nitride (Co5.47N) nanoparticles within three-dimensional (3D) N-doped porous carbon (Co5.47N NP@N-PC) polyhedra, which can be served as a highly active bifunctional electrocatalyst. To afford a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), the as-fabricated Co5.47N NP@N-PC only requires overpotentials as low as 149 and 248 mV for HER and OER, respectively. Moreover, an electrolyzer with Co5.47N NP@N-PC electrodes as both the cathode and anode catalyst in alkaline solutions can drive a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at a cell voltage of only 1.62 V, superior to that of the Pt/IrO2 couple. The excellent electrocatalytic activity of Co5.47N NP@N-PC can be mainly ascribed to the high inherent conductivity and rich nitrogen vacancies of the Co5.47N lattice, the electronic modulation of the N-doped carbon toward Co5.47N, and the hierarchically porous structure design.

Abstract:Herein, we provide a collaborative self‐templating method to prepare nanoporous CoP nanowire arrays decorated with carbon‐coated CoP nanoparticles. By exploiting the benefits of both structural and compositional characteristics, the catalyst exhibits excellent electrochemical catalytic activity for water splitting.SummaryThe innovative construction of bifunctional non‐noble electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is imperative for electrochemical water splitting. Herein, we provide a collaborative self‐templating method to prepare a hybrid catalyst of nanoporous CoP nanowire (NWs) arrays decorated with carbon‐coated CoP nanoparticles (NPs). It's found that the unique structure and morphology of the resultant catalyst can provide abundant available active sites and faciliatate the rapid H2/O2 transmission. Additionally, the N‐doped carbon improves the conductivity of the catalyst and prevents the aggregation and deactivation of CoP nanoparticles. Forthermore, the strong coupling and synergistic effects by interface engineering are also conducive to the electrochemical performance. Benefiting from these advantages, the CoP NWs/CoP NPs@NC/CC only needs a low overpotential of 103 mV to achieve 10 mA cm−2 with a small Tafel slope of 87 mV dec−1 for HER. When employed in an electrolytic cell as an electrocatalyst for overall water splitting, a low voltage of 1.60 V is required to drive 10 mA cm−2. This study may provide a novel way to fabricate transitionmetal‐based catalysts for water splitting.

Tungsten‐Doped CoP Nanoneedle Arrays Grown on Carbon Cloth As Efficient Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:The development of efficient and inexpensive bifunctional electrocatalysts with high activity and durability for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are highly desirable but challenging. Herein, we report the design and preparation of tungsten-doped cobalt phosphide nanoneedle arrays on conductive carbon cloth (W-CoP/CC) as highly efficient and stable HER and OER electrocatalysts for overall water splitting. The nanoneedle array provides enriched active sites and facilitates ion diffusion and the 3D conductive CC skeleton enables fast charge transport. Moreover, tungsten doping improves the water adsorption ability, optimizes the hydrogen adsorption energy, and increases the electrochemical active surface area thereby resulting in much improved HER and OER catalytic activity. The W-CoP/CC composite shows low overpotentials of 32 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) in 0.5 M H2SO4 electrolyte for HER and 77 and 252 mV in 1 M KOH solution for HER and OER, respectively, outperforming most previously reported metal phosphide electrocatalysts. The electrolyzer for overall water splitting with W-CoP/CC as both the anode and cathode achieves a stable current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at a low cell voltage of 1.59 V with no obvious voltage change even after operation for 20 h. The results provide a new strategy to design and prepare high-performance non-noble metal phosphides for overall water splitting.

Abstract:The design of multi-components nanostructure with interface heterojunction is the cutting-edge research in recent years because the catalytic activity, stability, and durability of catalysts are highly affected by the strong electronic effects, geometric effects, and synergistic effects occurring at the interface. Based on this, an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst embedding highly dispersed Ni 2 P/Co nano heterojunction at the porous hollow-out carbon shell is developed for overall water splitting through evenly epitaxial growth of ultrathin Ni 2 P nanosheets on Co-based ZIF-67. The distinct electron interaction between the interfacial Ni 2 P (300) and Co (100) effectively lowers the overpotential of OER (316 mV vs. RHE) and HER (149 mV vs. RHE) at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculation further identifies that the Ni 2 P and Co heterojunctions optimize the adsorption energy of intermediate products and lower the energy barrier of the rate-determining step of OER significantly. This work provides a rational design of a well-defined interface toward overall water splitting electrocatalysts and offers a scientific basis for an in-depth understanding of the mechanism of the catalysts with nano heterojunction.

Abstract:Abstract It is still a huge challenge to develop highly efficient and low-cost non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts for overall water splitting in alkaline electrolytes. Herein, Cr and Fe co-doped CoP porous mesh nanosheets (Mesh-CrFe-CoP NSs) were synthesized through hydrolysis reaction, ion exchange etching and subsequent low-temperature phosphating process. The Mesh-CrFe-CoP NSs provides overpotentials at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 under alkaline electrolyte of 103.7 mV and 256.4 mV for HER and OER, respectively. Furthermore, when using Mesh-CrFe-CoP NSs as anode and cathode, the water splitting system could afford a current density of 10 mA cm –2 at 1.55 V, which is better than an electrolytic cell composed of 20% Pt/C and RuO 2 . The excellent electrocatalytic performance of Mesh-CrFe-CoP NSs is attributed to the co-doping and porous nanostructure. Specifically, the Cr and Fe co-doped porous CoP nanosheets electrocatalyst not only provided abundant exposure active sites, accelerated the entry of liquid and the diffusion of gas, but also regulated the electronic environment of active sites, and thus enhanced the electrochemical performance. This work proposes a strategy for the rational design of highly efficient and stable non-precious metal co-doped phosphide electrocatalysts in the of electrochemical water splitting.
