Abstract:The construction of highly active and stable non-noble-metal electrocatalysts for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions is a major challenge for overall water splitting. Herein, we report a novel hybrid nanostructure with CoP nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in a N-doped carbon nanotube hollow polyhedron (NCNHP) through a pyrolysis-oxidation-phosphidation strategy derived from core-shell ZIF-8@ZIF-67. Benefiting from the synergistic effects between highly active CoP NPs and NCNHP, the CoP/NCNHP hybrid exhibited outstanding bifunctional electrocatalytic performances. When the CoP/NCNHP was employed as both the anode and cathode for overall water splitting, a potential as low as 1.64 V was needed to achieve the current density of 10 mA·cm-2, and it still exhibited superior activity after continuously working for 36 h with nearly negligible decay in potential. Density functional theory calculations indicated that the electron transfer from NCNHP to CoP could increase the electronic states of the Co d-orbital around the Fermi level, which could increase the binding strength with H and therefore improve the electrocatalytic performance. The strong stability is attributed to high oxidation resistance of the CoP surface protected by the NCNHP.

Abstract:The rational design of effective bifunctional electrocatalysts with good morphology, structure, and unique electronic properties, is crucial for efficient overall water splitting. Herein, a zinc-doped cobalt phosphide (CoP) nanosheet catalyst (Zn-CoP/CF) with a three-dimensional nanoarray structure in situ grown on a cobalt foam (CF) substrate was synthesized via a hydrothermal and gas-phase phosphatizing two-step route. Benefitting from the large specific surface area, numerous active sites, and the regulation of electron distribution between metals, Zn-CoP/CF requires low overpotentials of 327 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction and 440 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction at 1000 mA cm −2 . Moreover, a small cell voltage of 2.01 V is attained to achieve the current density of 1000 mA cm −2 for overall water splitting. This work provides a new idea for improving the intrinsic activity of electrocatalysts and demonstrates the potential of effectively constructing optimized electronic structures in the synthesis of high-current density electrocatalysts.

Abstract:High performance and low-cost electrocatalysts for overall water splitting, i.e., catalyzing hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions with the same material, are of great importance for large-scale, renewable energy conversion processes. Here, we report an ultrafast (~ 7 ms) synthesis technique for transition metal chalcogenide nanoparticles assisted by high temperature treatment. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate that cobalt sulfide (~ 20 nm in diameter)@ few-layer graphene (~ 2 nm in thickness) core-shell nanoparticles embedded in RGO nanosheets exhibit remarkable bifunctional electrocatalytic activity and stability for overall water splitting, which is comparable to commercial 40 wt.% platinum/carbon (Pt/C) electrocatalysts. After 60 h of continuous operation, 10 mA·cm−2 water splitting current density can still be achieved at a low potential of ~ 1.77 V without any activity decay, which is among the most active for non-noble material based electrocatalysts. The presented study provides prospects in synthesizing highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for large-scale energy conversion application via a simple yet efficient technique.

Abstract:Hierarchical nanostructures have attracted widespread interest owing to their unique properties compared to their bulk counterparts. Thus, they are considered promising electrocatalytic materials. In this work, a novel hierarchical porous nanocomposite of cobalt phosphide nanocage@ferric-zinc mixed-metal phosphide nanotubes (denoted CoP@ZnFeP) was fabricated using a self-assembly approach. Because of their structural and compositional merits, the as-prepared phosphide hybrids have abundant catalytic active sites and high porosity for facile mass diffusion. In an alkaline electrolyte, the CoP@ZnFeP flower-like hybrids displayed enhanced catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction and the oxygen evolution reaction compared with a mechanical mixture of CoP and ZnFeP nanoparticles. The CoP@ZnFeP hierarchical nanocomposites also showed excellent activity for the overall water splitting reaction, yielding a water-splitting current of 10 mA/cm2 on the application of just 1.6 V, as well as excellent durability (24-h long-term operation) in a two-electrode system. Our design methodology may create opportunities to search for highly efficient and robust non-precious metal catalysts with applications in high-performance energy conversion and storage devices.

By exploiting the benefits of both structural and compositional characteristics, the catalyst exhibits excellent electrochemical catalytic activity for water splitting.SummaryThe innovative construction of bifunctional non‐noble electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is imperative for electrochemical water splitting. Herein, we provide a collaborative self‐templating method to prepare a hybrid catalyst of nanoporous CoP nanowire (NWs) arrays decorated with carbon‐coated CoP nanoparticles (NPs). It's found that the unique structure and morphology of the resultant catalyst can provide abundant available active sites and faciliatate the rapid H2/O2 transmission. Additionally, the N‐doped carbon improves the conductivity of the catalyst and prevents the aggregation and deactivation of CoP nanoparticles. Forthermore, the strong coupling and synergistic effects by interface engineering are also conducive to the electrochemical performance. Benefiting from these advantages, the CoP NWs/CoP NPs@NC/CC only needs a low overpotential of 103 mV to achieve 10 mA cm−2 with a small Tafel slope of 87 mV dec−1 for HER. When employed in an electrolytic cell as an electrocatalyst for overall water splitting, a low voltage of 1.60 V is required to drive 10 mA cm−2. This study may provide a novel way to fabricate transitionmetal‐based catalysts for water splitting.

Abstract:Rational design of high-efficiency and low-cost catalysts for water splitting electrolysis plays an important role in clean energy conversion technology. Herein, density functional theory simulations indicate that the codoping of p-metal Al and d-metal Fe could reasonably regulate the electronic structure of CoP, resulting in an optimal H adsorption free energy. Based on this finding, we successfully prepared a bifunctional catalyst of Al, Fe-codoped CoP nanoparticles/reduced graphene oxide, which displays superior HER performance in a wide pH range and OER performance in the alkaline medium with high H2/O2 evolution rates and Faradaic efficiencies. For overall water splitting, such a catalyst exhibits excellent activity (a low cell voltage of 1.66 V at 10 mA cm−2) and durability. The strategy of synergistic modulation of electronic structure by introducing different-type dopants into a hybrid proposed in this work is beneficial for designing novel electrocatalysts for applications in energy-conversion devices.

Abstract:Exploring high-efficiency and earth-abundant bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting is of great significance to meet the requirement of the hydrogen economy, but still faces many challenges. In this work, we propose the chemical etching, successive carbonization, and phosphorization treatment strategy of solid ZIF-67 (ZIF = zeolitic imidazole framework), constructing a hybrid nanostructure with CoP nanoparticles embedded in a hollow N-doped carbon nanocage (h-CoP@NC). The elaborate hollow porous structure is conducive to effectively exposing more active sites and shortening mass-transportation pathways. The nitrogen-doped carbon layer would protect the active CoP units from agglomeration and enhance the conductivity. These structural factors synergistically contribute to the enhanced electrocatalytic performance. As a result, the carbonization-temperature-optimized h-CoP@NC-900-300 catalyst can efficiently catalyze both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions with respective overpotentials of 196 and 339 mV to afford a current density of 10 mA cm–2, outperforming other contrast catalysts. Impressively, to comprise this optimal electrocatalyst into both an anode and cathode of the alkaline electrolyzer, a cell voltage of 1.764 V is needed for achieving a current density of 10 mA cm–2 with continuously operational ability. This present study would shed light on the exploration of advanced transition-metal-based electrocatalysts by composition and structure design for energy conversion applications.

Abstract:It is vital to develop efficient earth-abundant bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting to mitigate the global energy crisis and environmental pollution. Here, Mn and W dual transition metal co-doped CoP nanoflower arrays supported on nickel foam (Mn–W–CoP/NF) have been synthesized via the hydrothermal method and chemical vapor deposition. The unique nanoflower-type structure of Mn–W–CoP/NF facilitated high reactive-site exposure and efficient charge transfer. Consequently, Mn–W–CoP/NF exhibited excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic activity in alkaline electrolytes, with low overpotentials of 95.8 and 229.2 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction, respectively, at 10 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, it could be used to construct a two-electrode water-splitting electrolyzer exhibiting stable water splitting at a low cell voltage (1.57 V) at 10 mA cm −2 . This study could guide the design and development of efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for large-scale water-splitting applications.

Abstract:Precisely engineering the architectures of nanoparticles (NPs) to optimize their physicochemical properties and thus electrocatalytic performances are challenging for scientists. Here, we report the controllable construction of solid, hollow, and double-shell hollow metal phosphide NPs anchored by carbon nanosheet arrays on carbon cloth. We demonstrate that Cu doping can intensify the nanoscale Kirkendall effect, which promotes the transformation from solid CuCo to double-shell hollow CoP NPs. Benefiting from its high dispersity, large electrochemical specific surface area, fast mass diffusion and good conductivity, the optimal double-shell hollow Cu-CoP-based electrocatalyst exhibits excellent activities for OER (η 10 =176 mV) and water splitting (1.494 V @ 10 mA) in 1.0 M KOH with favorable stability. DFT calculations further confirm the optimized OH* adsorption energy of Cu-CoOOH/Cu-CoP due to Cu doping and interfacial synergy for boosting OER. This work provides new perspectives for engineering the nanoarchitecture of multilevel hollow NPs through the Kirkendall effect for electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Highly active and durable bifunctional electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) play a pivotal role in overall water splitting. Herein, we demonstrate the construction of interface-strengthened CoP nanosheet array with Co2P nanoparticles as such an electrocatalyst through a facile hydrothermal reaction and the subsequent phosphorization process. The two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets with thickness of ∼55 nm expose a great number of active sites. The surface chemical state indicates that the strongly coupled CoP/Co2P electrocatalysts can adsorb or generate more targeted intermediates (e.g. OH− or OOH*) for both HER/OER. As a result, the CoP/Co2P electrocatalysts exhibit small overpotentials of 68 and 256 mV to drive 10 mA cm−2 for HER and OER, respectively, outperforming most of the recently reported Co-based electrocatalysts. Furthermore, an alkaline electrolyzer assembled by using CoP/Co2P as both cathode and anode can achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at a low voltage of 1.57 V and work continuously for over 58 h. This work provides a feasible structural design for transition metal phosphides electrocatalysts with efficient and stable overall water splitting.

Abstract:The design of efficient, stable, and economical electrocatalysts for oxygen and hydrogen evolution reaction (OER and HER) is a major challenge for overall water splitting. Herein, a hierarchical structured CoP/carbon nanofibers (CNFs) composite was successfully synthesized and its potential application as a high-efficiency bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall splitting water was evaluated. The synergetic effect of two-dimensional (2D) CoP nanosheets and one-dimensional (1D) CNFs endowed the CoP/CNFs composites with abundant active sites and rapid electron and mass transport pathways, and thereby significantly improved the electrocatalytic performances. The optimized CoP/CNFs delivered a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at low overpotential of 325 mV for OER and 225 mV for HER. In the overall water splitting, CoP/CNFs achieved a low potential of 1.65 V at 10 mA cm−2. The facile strategy provided in the present work can facilitate the design and development of multifunctional non-noble metal catalysts for energy applications.

Abstract:Cobalt-based electrocatalysts for water splitting have attracted extensive research interests. However, the single function, poor performances, and restriction of electrolyte pH value have restricted their further development. Here, morphological and interfacial engineering of cobalt nanoparticles, are performed by the incorporation of carbon dots (CDs). Typically, the nitrogen-doped carbon-encapsulated cobalt nano particles (N-C@Co NPs) were in situ constructed for electrocatalytic overall water splitting, exhibiting superior hydrogen evolution performances in both acid and alkaline media with the overpotential of 137 and 134 mV at 10 mA.cm(-2), respectively, and excellent oxygen evolution performances in alkaline media with the overpotential of 353 mV at 10 mA.cm(-2). Such performances outperform the majority of previously reported Co-based electrocatalysts and are comparable to many excellent nonprecious metal based electrocatalysts. It is found that CDs have significant impact on fabricating a distinct morphology of catalysts and bonding structure between N-C and Co NPs, and synergistic effects between the N-C and Co NPs for water splitting are revealed. Furthermore, as a proof concept, the proposed strategy was further verified by CDs-decorated cobaltosic oxide nanoparticles (CDs@Co3O4 NPs) with enhanced OER activities (a overpotential of 304 mV at 10 mA.cm(-2)). This work provides an approach for the synthesis of various stable metal-based carbon hybrids with high-performance photo/electrocatalystic activities.

Abstract:To develop highly efficient and non-noblemetal catalysts in solar-driven photoelectrochemical cells for water splitting and CO2 reduction is a tremendous challenge but there is a strong desire to accomplish it. Herein, CoP- and CoN-based porous nanocatalysts, which were in situ transformed from Co-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67), are reported as efficient co-catalysts for photoelectrochemical water splitting and CO2 reduction. The CoP wrapped with N-doped carbon (CoP/CN) nano-electrocatalysts, with high catalytic activity and stability for both the hydrogen (HER) and oxygen (OER) evolution reactions in situ coated with TiO2 nanowires (TiO2 NWs@CoP/CN), and the p-type Si nanowires (Si NWs@CoP/CN) strikingly promoted photoelectrochemical water splitting by serving as a photoanode and a photocathode, respectively, whereas CoN wrapped with N-doped carbon (CoN/CN) nanocatalysts presented excellent electrocatalytic activity towards CO2 reduction with a low onset potential, high selectivity, and good stability. It can be noted that CoN/CN catalysts-covered p-type Si nanowires (Si NWs@CoN/CN) also displayed high photoelectrochemical performance for CO2 reduction. The superior photoelectrochemical catalytic properties can be ascribed to the synergetic effect of the porous N-doped carbon network inherited from ZIF-67 and wrapped CoP or CoN nanoparticles as well as the superior interface achieved via the in situ growth method.

Abstract:Exploring highly efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for electrochemical water splitting is of importance for the conversion of intermediate energy. Herein, the synthesis of dual-cation (Fe, Co)-incorporated NiSe2 nanosheets (Fe, Co-NiSe2) and systematical investigation of their electrocatalytic performance for water splitting as a function of the composition are reported. The dual-cation incorporation can distort the lattice and induce stronger electronic interaction, leading to increased active site exposure and optimized adsorption energy of reaction intermediates compared to single-cation-doped or pure NiSe2. As a result, the obtained Fe0.09Co0.13-NiSe2 porous nanosheet electrode shows an optimized catalytic activity with a low overpotential of 251 mV for oxygen evolution reaction and 92 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (both at 10 mA cm(-2) in 1 m KOH). When used as bifunctional electrodes for overall water splitting, the current density of 10 mA cm(-2) is achieved at a low cell voltage of 1.52 V. This work highlights the importance of dual-cation doping in enhancing the electrocatalyst performance of transition metal dichalcogenides.

Abstract:Abstract It is still a huge challenge to develop highly efficient and low-cost non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts for overall water splitting in alkaline electrolytes. Herein, Cr and Fe co-doped CoP porous mesh nanosheets (Mesh-CrFe-CoP NSs) were synthesized through hydrolysis reaction, ion exchange etching and subsequent low-temperature phosphating process. The Mesh-CrFe-CoP NSs provides overpotentials at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 under alkaline electrolyte of 103.7 mV and 256.4 mV for HER and OER, respectively. Furthermore, when using Mesh-CrFe-CoP NSs as anode and cathode, the water splitting system could afford a current density of 10 mA cm –2 at 1.55 V, which is better than an electrolytic cell composed of 20% Pt/C and RuO 2 . The excellent electrocatalytic performance of Mesh-CrFe-CoP NSs is attributed to the co-doping and porous nanostructure. Specifically, the Cr and Fe co-doped porous CoP nanosheets electrocatalyst not only provided abundant exposure active sites, accelerated the entry of liquid and the diffusion of gas, but also regulated the electronic environment of active sites, and thus enhanced the electrochemical performance. This work proposes a strategy for the rational design of highly efficient and stable non-precious metal co-doped phosphide electrocatalysts in the of electrochemical water splitting.

Abstract:The design of multi-components nanostructure with interface heterojunction is the cutting-edge research in recent years because the catalytic activity, stability, and durability of catalysts are highly affected by the strong electronic effects, geometric effects, and synergistic effects occurring at the interface. Based on this, an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst embedding highly dispersed Ni 2 P/Co nano heterojunction at the porous hollow-out carbon shell is developed for overall water splitting through evenly epitaxial growth of ultrathin Ni 2 P nanosheets on Co-based ZIF-67. The distinct electron interaction between the interfacial Ni 2 P (300) and Co (100) effectively lowers the overpotential of OER (316 mV vs. RHE) and HER (149 mV vs. RHE) at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculation further identifies that the Ni 2 P and Co heterojunctions optimize the adsorption energy of intermediate products and lower the energy barrier of the rate-determining step of OER significantly. This work provides a rational design of a well-defined interface toward overall water splitting electrocatalysts and offers a scientific basis for an in-depth understanding of the mechanism of the catalysts with nano heterojunction.

Abstract:Noble-metal-free hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) electrocatalysts, especially bifunctional electrocatalysts, are essential for overall water splitting, but their performance is impeded by many factors like poor electrical conductivity. Herein, we fabricated cobalt phosphide (CoP) nanoparticles embedded in P and N co-doped carbon (PNC) matrix (CoP@PNC) to fully realize the high activity of CoP by maximizing its conductivity. Simply a carbonization coupled phosphidation approach was utilized where Co ions and organic ligands of Co-MOF were transferred into CoP and P and N co-doped carbon. The synthesized material shows an ideal electrical conductivity, excellent HER (overpotential of -84 mV and -120 mV@10 mA cm(-2) in acidic and alkaline medias, respectively) and OER (overpotential of 330 mV@10 mA cm(-2) in alkaline media) performances. Further, CoP@PNC acts as a superior catalyst for both anode and cathode to catalyze overall water splitting and only requires an voltage of 1.52 V to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), superior to the noble-metal catalysts system (Pt/C//IrO2) and the reported noble-metal-free bifunctional electrocatalysts. In Situ Preparation of Cobalt@N-Doped Porous Carbon Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Efficient Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Developing highly efficient noble-metal-free bifunctional nanocatalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting is attractive but challenging. Notably, the rational structure engineering could effectively promote electronic transfer and improve the active area. Herein, a free-standing N-doped porous carbon nanosheet arrays encap-sulated with metallic Co nanoparticles electrocatalyst (Co@NC-A) for overall water splitting was designed via pyrolysis process followed with acid treatment. The N-doped carbon matrix not only enhances electron mobility and protects the metallic Co nanoparticles from electrolyte corrosion, but also improves the electrochemically active area and facilitates mass transfer. Consequently, the Co@NC-A exhibits superior electrocatalytic perfor-mance toward OER (ri10 = 270 mV) and HER (ri10 = 162 mV) in 1 M KOH. Moreover, the Co@NC-A as a bifunctional catalyst in overall water splitting could approach 10 mA cm-2 at a cell voltage of 1.66 V and operate stably for 50 h. Combined with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the improvement of the HER and OER activities is also attributed to the modified electronic structure with N-doped carbon and the optimized free energy toward the adsorption/desorption of intermediates. This work provides a novel and facile non-precious metal catalyst for water splitting and should be instructive for designing more carbon-based nanocatalysts.

Abstract:Two-dimensional porous nanosheet material has attracted great attention as a promising electrocatalyst for water splitting. Herein, mesh-like Fe-doped CoP holey nanosheets (Fe–CoP HNSs) is synthesized by a facile phosphorization treatment. The Fe–CoP HNSs catalyst features abundant active sites, short charge and ion transport pathways, and favorable mass transfer kinetics, which are conductive to promote the water splitting reaction. Remarkably, the Fe–CoP HNSs catalyst exhibits superior catalytic activity towards hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction with low overpotentials of 79 and 220 mV to reach 10 mA cm−2, respectively. Furthermore, the assembled Fe–CoP HNSs||Fe–CoP HNSs electrolyzer needs a low cell voltage of 1.60 V to deliver 20 mA cm−2, which is higher than many reported transition metal phosphides electrocatalysts. This work sheds light on the fabrication of transition-metal compound electrocatalyst with holey nanosheet structure by element doping for renewable energy production.

Abstract:Searching for highly active and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting, e.g., for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), is dominating in terms of bringing future renewable energy storage and conversion processes to reality. In this work, a kind of two-dimensional ultrathin manganese (Mn) doped polyhedral cobalt phosphide (Mn-CoP) has been synthesized via the etching-carbonization-phosphidation of Co-centered metal-organic frameworks. The as-prepared porous Mn-CoP nanosheets had a larger specific surface area and higher porosity, furnishing them with more plentiful catalytically active sites than their counterpart hollow CoP and Mn-CoP nanoparticles, and thus showed much better electrocatalytic activity for both HER and OER in acidic and alkaline media. In addition, the Mn-CoP nanosheets also demonstrated excellent durability after long-term operation. These high performances are attributed to the synergistic effects of the CoP nanosheets with intrinsic activity, the graphitic carbon and the controllable electronic structure doped by Mn and N elements. This synthetic methodology of using a classical MOF as a precursor to build a new 2D sheet-like composite may create opportunities to search for highly efficient and robust non-precious metal catalysts for energy-related reactions.
