Abstract:Oxidation reactions have significant value in organic chemistry, having been in focus continuously due to the high efficiency in building up molecular complexity. In the past few decades, transition metal-catalyzed oxidation reactions have been significantly explored and have played important roles in organic synthesis. Compared to the widely-used oxidants, such as inorganic salts, peroxides, hypervalent iodine reagents and quinones, molecular oxygen (O2), which is natural, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly, is a highly appealing oxidant in academic and industry area for green and sustainable chemistry. Recently, significant advances have been made in palladium-catalyzed reactions using O2 as the oxidant. This critical review highlights some of the recent developments in molecular oxygen-involved Pd-catalyzed oxidation reactions with a focus on mechanistic strategies and new reaction developments.

Abstract:The selective oxo-functionalization of hydrocarbons under mild conditions with molecular oxygen as the terminal oxidant continues to be a hot topic in organic synthesis and industrial chemistry. Though many oxidation protocols in combination with transition metal salts, enzymes, organometallic catalysts, or organocatalysts have been summarized recently, a review that focuses solely on the metal-free allylic/benzylic oxidation strategies with molecular oxygen is still unavailable. This critical review will summarize recent significant advances achieved in this important field under the scope of green chemistry, which covers the promising applications and brief mechanistic profiles involving three kinds of efficient catalysts, namely N-hydroxyimides, homogeneous/heterogeneous light-sensitive molecules, and heteroatom-doped carbon materials, and concerns the sustainability of these methods, as well as predicts the potential utilization of available but unreported analogous catalysts or catalytic systems in this field. Special emphasis will also be placed on the burgeoning metal-free strategies with visible light irradiation from the long-term greenness and sustainability of these oxidation processes due to their established appealing performances under ambient conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, methods of deoximation are reviewed. Oxime was used to protect carbonyl group as one of stable protective groups. Peculiarity of verious deoximation methods for regenerating parent carbonyl group from its oxime have been introduced more widely. These reactions have been classified into five kinds: acid-catalysed hydrolytic, reductive, oxidative, electrochemical, and biochemical. Some deoximation mechanisms are also discribed.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), one type of pollutant which not only causes a series of environmental issues but does extreme harm to human health, have attracted extensive attention. Therefore, it is urgent to treat VOCs to reduce their emissions and control terminal treatment. Catalytic oxidation is considered as a promising technology for VOCs removal due to its low energy consumption, high safety coefficient, and no secondary pollutants. This review discusses the oxidation mechanism of representative VOCs primarily. It further summarizes advances for VOCs removal catalysts, mainly supported noble metal catalysts (SNMCs) and transition metal oxides (TMOs) with economical and effective catalytic oxidation in recent years. It highlights the influence of reaction conditions and a series of factors on catalytic performance for VOCs. It also addresses how water vapor, SO2, and CO2 affect the deactivation of catalysts and proposes corresponding regeneration approaches. It gives the future directions for developing effective and stable catalysts for VOCs oxidation at lower temperatures. This review will provide an informative reference for designing excellent catalysts for VOCs oxidation.

Abstract:Transition-metal catalyzed oxidation reactions are central components of organic chemistry. On behalf of green and sustainable chemistry, molecular oxygen (O-2) has been considered as an ideal oxidant due to its natural, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly characters, and therefore offers attractive academic and industrial prospects. In recent years, some powerful organic oxidation methods have been continuously developed. Among them, the use of molecular oxygen (O-2) as a green and sustainable oxidant has attracted considerable attentions. However, the development of new transition metal-catalyzed protocols using O-2 as an ideal oxidant is highly desirable but very challenging because of the low standard electrode potential of O-2 to reoxidize the transition-metal catalysts. In this Account, we highlight some of our progress toward the use of transition-metal catalyzed aerobic oxidation reactions. Through the careful selection of ligand and the acidic additives, we have successfully realized the reoxidation of Cu, Pd, Mn, Fe, Ru, Rh, and bimetallic catalysts under O-2 or air atmosphere (1 atm) for the oxidative coupling, oxygenation reactions, oxidative C-H/C-C bond cleavage, oxidative annulation, and olefins difunctionalization reactions. Most of the reactions can tolerate a range of functional groups. These methods provide new strategies for the green synthesis of alkynes, (-keto)amides/esters, ketones/diones, O/N-heterocycles, -azido alcohols, and nitriles. The high efficiency, low cost, and simple operation under air make these methodologies very attractive and practical. We will also discuss the mechanisms of these reactions which might be useful to promote the new type of aerobic oxidative reaction design.

Abstract:As naturally abundant and recyclable industrial feedstock, alcohols and carboxylic acids have drawn tremendous attention in medicinal chemistry and polymer chemistry. The selective C-O cleavage of the hydroxyl group represents an appealing strategy to deliver alkyl and carbonyl moieties into organic molecules. Classical examples of hydroxyl activation include the Appel reaction, Mitsunobu reaction, and Barton-McCombie deoxygenation. However, these early approaches still require large amounts of oxidants or reductants, and suffer from harsh conditions and low atom economy. Electrosynthesis has proven to be an effective and mild way of the modern chemical industry, avoiding the use of chemical oxidants/reductants through the action of an electric current. In this review, we have summarized the recent advances in electrochemical deoxygenation reactions and categorized the deoxygenation methods by different functionalities.

Abstract:The severe hazard of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) to human health and the natural environment makes their abatement technology a key topic of global environmental research. Due to the existence of Cl, the byproducts of CVOCs in the catalytic combustion process are complex and toxic, and the possible generation of dioxin becomes a potential risk to the environment. Well-qualified CVOC catalysts should process favorable low-temperature catalytic oxidation ability, excellent selectivity, and good resistance to poisoning, which are governed by the reasonable adjustment of acidity and redox properties. This review overviews the application of different types of multicomponent catalysts, that is, supported noble metal catalysts, transition metal oxide/zeolite catalysts, composite transition metal oxide catalysts, and acid-modified catalysts, for CVOC degradation from the perspective of balance between acidity and redox properties. This review also highlights the synergistic degradation of CVOCs and NOx from the perspective of acidity and redox properties. We expect this work to inspire and guide researchers from both the academic and industrial communities and help pave the way for breakthroughs in fundamental research and industrial applications in this field.

Abstract:Oxidation catalysis not only plays a crucial role in the current chemical industry for the production of key intermediates such as alcohols, epoxides, aldehydes, ketones and organic acids, but also will contribute to the establishment of novel green and sustainable chemical processes. This review is devoted to dealing with selective oxidation reactions, which are important from the viewpoint of green and sustainable chemistry and still remain challenging. Actually, some well-known highly challenging chemical reactions involve selective oxidation reactions, such as the selective oxidation of methane by oxygen. On the other hand some important oxidation reactions, such as the aerobic oxidation of alcohols in the liquid phase and the preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide in hydrogen, have attracted much attention in recent years because of their high significance in green or energy chemistry. This article summarizes recent advances in the development of new catalytic materials or novel catalytic systems for these challenging oxidation reactions. A deep scientific understanding of the mechanisms, active species and active structures for these systems are also discussed. Furthermore, connections among these distinct catalytic oxidation systems are highlighted, to gain insight for the breakthrough in rational design of efficient catalytic systems for challenging oxidation reactions.

Abstract:The catalytic performance of solid catalysts depends on the properties of the catalytically active sites and their accessibility to reactants, which are significantly affected by the microstructure (morphology, shape, size, texture, and surface structure) and surface chemistry (elemental components and chemical states). The development of facile and efficient methods for tailoring the microstructure and surface chemistry is a hot topic in catalysis. This contribution reviews the state of the art in modulating the microstructure and surface chemistry of carbocatalysts by both bottom-up and top-down strategies and their use in the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) and direct dehydrogenation (DDH) of hydrocarbons including light alkanes and ethylbenzene to their corresponding olefins, important building blocks and chemicals like oxygenates. A concept of microstructure and surface chemistry tuning of the carbocatalyst for optimized catalytic performance and also for the fundamental understanding of the structure-performance relationship is discussed. We also highlight the importance and challenges in modulating the microstructure and surface chemistry of carbocatalysts in ODH and DDH reactions of hydrocarbons for the highly-efficient, energy-saving, and clean production of their corresponding olefins.

Abstract:Manganese-based (Mn-based) oxide have been attracted much attention by researchers whose aim on the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) controlling. Although the low cost, environment friendly and easy fabrication, the inferior catalytic activity of Mn-based oxide makes them unsuitable for practical application yet. In addition, the easy deactivation of Mn-based oxide catalysts to various conditions has been awarded in recent years. Summarizing the advancements of Mn-based oxide and different mechanisms of their deactivation are crucial for designing catalysts with superior catalytic active and stability for VOCs combustion. In this review, we summarize the developments of Mn-based oxide with elevated activity for catalytic oxidation of VOCs via morphology designing and vacancy engineering. Moreover, deactivation mechanisms with the presence of chloride-VOC, water vapor, NOx and SO2 are reviewed. Existing challenges and opportunities are proposed for future research toward to the industrial application of Mn-based oxide for VOCs combustion.

Abstract:Oxidation chemistry using enzymes is approaching maturity and practical applicability in organic synthesis. Oxidoreductases (enzymes catalysing redox reactions) enable chemists to perform highly selective and efficient transformations ranging from simple alcohol oxidations to stereoselective halogenations of non-activated C-H bonds. For many of these reactions, no "classical" chemical counterpart is known. Hence oxidoreductases open up shorter synthesis routes based on a more direct access to the target products. The generally very mild reaction conditions may also reduce the environmental impact of biocatalytic reactions compared to classical counterparts. In this Review, we critically summarise the most important recent developments in the field of biocatalytic oxidation chemistry and identify the most pressing bottlenecks as well as promising solutions.

Abstract:The photo‐driven oxidation of organic molecules into corresponding high‐value‐added products has become a promising method in chemical synthesis. This strategy can drive thermodynamically non‐spontaneous reactions and achieve challenging thermocatalytic processes under ambient conditions. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are not only significant intermediates for producing target products via photoinduced oxidation reactions but also contribute to the creation of sustainable chemical processes. Here, we summarize the latest advances in heterogeneous photo‐driven oxidation reactions involving ROS. The major types of ROS and their generation are introduced, and the behaviors of various ROS involved in photo‐driven processes are reviewed in terms of the formation of different bonds. Emphasis is placed on unraveling the reaction mechanisms of ROS and establishing strategies for their regulation, and the remaining challenges and perspectives are summarized and analyzed. This review is expected to provide an in‐depth understanding of the mechanisms of ROS involved in photo‐driven oxidation processes as an important foundation for the design of efficient catalysts. Clarifying the role of ROS in oxidation reactions has important scientific significance for improving the atomic and energy efficiency of reactions in practical applications.

Abstract:Oxygenases-catalyzed reductive activation of molecular oxygen and incorporation of O atoms into an organic molecule is undoubtedly one of the most attractive research areas. Typically, these oxygenation reactions proceed with high selectivity and reactivity, which is seldom found in its "biomimetic" chemocatalytic counterparts. Furthermore, enzymatic oxygenation can avoid undesired overoxidation, which is frequently observed in (industrial) chemical transformation. Therefore, it is not surprising that tremendous attention has been paid to enzymatic oxygenation. Their application in organic synthesis has been steadily growing over the years. The goal of the present Review is to provide a handy reference for chemists interested in using homogeneous oxygenase catalysis and those interested in discovering new types of biomimetic oxidations and oxygenations with dioxygen. In this Review, we will review the recent advances in in homogeneous oxygenase catalysis to reveal the great achievements and potentials in this field.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have become one of the most serious threats to human health and eco-environment owing to their volatility, toxicity and diffusivity properties, etc. Catalytic oxidation strategy has exhibited high efficiency in the treatment of VOCs. More and more stringent emission legislations offer new opportunities for zeolites as efficient catalysts for the completely oxidations of VOCs because of their unique structures and excellent properties. This review systematically summarizes the progresses and developments made in the design of zeolite-based catalysts for VOCs oxidations in recent decades. It also gives prominence to the features of the zeolites on the catalytic performances in the oxidations of VOCs. We believe that this review will facilitate the design of efficient catalysts for catalytic oxidations of VOCs in the future.

Abstract:Deoximation is an important transformation in synthetic industry. It can be employed in protection, characterization and purification of the carbonyls, and in the synthesis of ketones from non-carbonyl molecules. In the field, oxidative deoximation reaction can utilize the driving force caused by the oxidation process so that the reaction can occur under relatively mild conditions. Recently, we designed and prepared polyaniline-supported molybdenum (Mo@PANI) just by immersing PANI into the EtOH/H2O solution of MoCl5. The material was successfully applied as the efficient catalyst for oxidative deoximation reactions, which were performed in ethanol using H2O2 as the clean oxidant. The substrate scope of the reaction was wide. It could be applied on heterocycle-containing substrates, making this protocol preferable for pharmaceutical intermediate synthesis. Since Mo is a necessary trace element for both animals and plants, this method is environment-friendly and is suitable for large-scale preparation. This work as the first example of Mo-catalyzed oxidative deoximation reaction may inspire novel ideas for both catalyst design and synthetic process development.

Abstract:The direct methane (CH4) oxidation to high-value chemical products under mild aqueous conditions is a promising energy-conversion technology to fulfill the urgent demand of varied industrial feedstocks and the efficient utilization of vast CH4. Developing advanced catalysts to activate C–H bond and inhibit peroxidation of desired products is extremely pivotal to realize the direct CH4 oxidation with high activity and selectivity. Recently, atomically dispersed catalysts gradually show an excellent catalytic performance on the direct CH4 oxidation process due to their unique atomic structure, high metallic utilization, and modulated coordination environment. In this review, the experimental and theoretical progress of atomically dispersed catalysts for the direct CH4 oxidation is summarized, and in particular, the influence of atomically dispersed catalysts with different supports (metal oxides, carbon materials, metal-organic frameworks, and molecular sieves) on catalysts design, theoretical calculation, the C–H activation mechanism, as well as inhibition mechanism of peroxidation are emphasized. Finally, the immense opportunities and challenges for atomically dispersed catalysts on the direct CH4 oxidation are discussed, and some insights into the development of atomically dispersed catalysts are provided.

Abstract:Nonradical oxidation in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) has been extensively applied in contaminants elimination from aqueous solutions. Since nonradical oxidation was first proposed in the Gif system in 2001, high-valent ferric ions (FeⅤ+) were identified as active species. Therefore, researchers extensively exploited nonradical oxidation and have made great progress in persulfate-based nonradical activation process and nonradical mechanisms. At the same time, various catalysts are updated successively, but the summary of kinds of catalysts involved in nonradical oxidation is limited. Hence, we systematically summarized five nonradical oxidation mechanisms, and provided an elaboration on the recent development of sundry catalysts involved in nonradical oxidation in this review. The intrinsic impacts of carbon-based, metal-based materials are clarified, with emphasis on reactive oxygen species, pivotal functional groups and specific mechanism. For carbon-based catalysts, novel raw materials and special synthesis means are displayed. For latest metal-based catalysts like high-valent metal species (e.g., Fe(Ⅳ) and Mn(Ⅴ)), single-atom catalysts (SACs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), we endeavored to present a critical understanding of the relationship between their structure and nonradical activation performance. Not only that, the particular mechanism of inorganics anions and organics were also illustrated in this paper. Lastly, we proposed the applications, opportunities and challenges of nonradical oxidation. Generally, this review provided a theoretical and applied research progress on nonradical oxidation and offered a comprehensive introduction for various catalysts involved in nonradical oxidation for better future research and environmental application.
