Abstract:Good sense: A highly sensitive and selective ratiometric fluorescent probe for Fe2+ was developed by linking an Fe2+-insensitive fluorophore to an Fe2+-sensitive reporter–fluorophore fragment. The fluorescence intensity ratio increased linearly with the concentration of Fe2+ (see scheme). The probe was applied to the ratiometric imaging of intracellular and adscititious fluctuations of Fe2+ in live HL-7702 and HepG2 cells.

Abstract:Herein, we demonstrate a facile, straightforward and green method for synthesis of highly red-emitting fluorescent bimetallic Au/Ag nanoclusters (NCs) employing lipoic acid as both a reducing agent and a protecting agent. The as-prepared Au/Ag NCs exhibited bright red emission with a strong peak centered at 630 nm (quantum yield measured as 6.4%), and showed excellent stability and remarkable temperature-dependent fluorescent property. The fluorescence responses were reversible and linear to the environment temperature from 20 to 65 C with a resolution as high as 1.34 degrees C, which allows its potential application as a fluorescent nanothermometer. Moreover, Au/Ag NCs were also explored for selective and sensitive determination of Fe3+ based on the specific quenching of the fluorescence by Fe3+, and explored for fluorescence imaging Fe3+ in living HeLa cells thanks to their very low cytotoxicity. Abstract:In this paper, growth hormone releasing peptide-6 (GHRP-6) is a bioactive polypeptide and acts as the reducing agent and capping ligand for synthesis of bright green fluorescent gold nanoclusters (GHRP-6-Au NCs) by a simple and environmental-friendly aqueous method, with the assistance of NaBr as the fluorescent sensitizer. The obtained GHRP-6-Au NCs had high fluorescent quantum yield (10.7%), and the fluorescence was strongly quenched by the existence of trace Fe3+. Thus, a new and highly sensitive sensor for the assay of Fe3+ was constructed based on the analyte-induced fluorescent quenching mechanism. The sensor had a low detection limit of 1.4µM (S/N=3) and a wide linear range of 2-1000µM. Besides, GHRP-6-Au NCs exhibited low cytotoxicity and high biocompatibility for cell imaging.
One-pot Green Synthesis of Highly Fluorescent Glutathione-Stabilized Copper Nanoclusters for Fe3+ Sensing

Abstract:Herein, we reported a simple one-pot green method for preparation of fluorescent copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) with a high quantum yield up to 8.6%, using glutathione as the stabilizing agent. The as-prepared Cu NCs had good water solubility, excellent stability and ultrafine size through the characterization of UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Experimental results showed that the fluorescence of Cu NCs was linearly quenched by the Fe3+ concentrations in the range of 1-100 mu M, with the detection limit of 0.3 mu M. Abstract:Glutathione capped silver nanoclusters (GSH@Ag NCs) were prepared by facile sonachemical method in aqueous solution. A new GSH@Ag NCs fluorescent probe for the detection of Fe3+ has been designed based on the significant fluorescence quenching of GSH@Ag NCs. The response to Fe3+ allows for a linear dynamic range from 5×10−7mol/L to 2×10−5mol/L with a detection limit of 1.2×10−7mol/L. The other common metal ions did not cause interference. Moreover, the proposed method was applied to the detection of serum iron contents in human serum samples and the recoveries were 84.12–101.70%. In addition, an interesting fluorescence signal “off-on” phenomena of the Ag NCs probe was observed. The fluorescence of the Ag NCs probe could be switched “off” with addition of Fe3+ solution and “on” in the presence of EDTA solution because of the competition for Fe3+. This property enables the probe to be possible for constructing practicable and reusable sensor. All above features indicated that functionalized silver nanoclusters-based fluorescent probe as sensing platform hold great potential for applications in biological and analytical detection.

Abstract:A novel dual-emitting fluorescence probe is developed for rapid and ultrasensitive detection of Fe3+. The nanoprobe is prepared by coating CdSe semiconductor quantum dots (SQDs) onto the surface of carbon nanodot (CND) doped TiO2 microspheres. The as-prepared nanoprobe exhibits the corresponding dual emissions at 436 and 596 nm for CNDs and CdSe, respectively, under a single excitation wavelength. The blue fluorescence of the CNDs is insensitive to Fe3+, whereas the orange emission of the CdSe SQDs is functionalized to be selectively quenched by Fe3+. The intensity ratio of /(436)//(596) shows a good linear relationship with the concentration of Fe3+ in the range of 10-9 to 10-5 M. The nanoprobe provides an effective platform for the reliable detection of Fe3+ with a detection limit as low as 10 nM. Besides, this ratiometric nanosensor exhibits good selectivity for Fe3+ over other metal ions. The results reveal that the nanoprobe could provide a sensitive sensor for rapid detection of Fe3+ with high selectivity and sensitivity. Moreover, 293T cells are used as models to achieve a potential application as a probe for monitoring Fe3+ in cells. Thus, these dual-emitting nanoprobes could work as an alternative to conventional fluorescence probes for biolabeling, sensing and other applications.

Abstract:A green, one-step method for the fabrication of silk fibroin (SF) protected silver decahedral nanoparticles (SF@AgNPs) has been developed. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy characterization demonstrated that the silver decahedral nanoparticles can provide more binding sites with (111) facets. Moreover, a facile strategy based on Cu2+ mediated SF@AgNPs was reported as an on-off-on fluorescent system for the detection of Cu2+, and the SF@AgNPs can be also used for the determination of pyrophosphate ion (P2O74-, PPi). The fluorescence of SF@AgNPs was quenched by Cu2+ as a complex formed between SF and Cu2+ and was restored when PPi was introduced into the system due to the higher binding affinity between PPi and Cu2+. Herein, a novel SF@AgNPs-Cu2+ fluorescent probe for Cu2+ and PPi detection is presented. The proposed assay shows a linear relationship at a Cu2+ concentration range from 1 to 6 mu M with a detection limit of 33.3 nM. This simple, reliable, selective, and environmentally friendly fluorescent probe also has a wide concentration range from 100 to 700 mu M with a detection limit of 6.7 mu M for PPi. The 16 types of anions lead to negligible changes in the SF@AgNPs-Cu2+ complexes, while restoring the fluorescence intensity of the complexes when added with PPi. Additionally, it is demonstrated that the SF@AgNPs-based fluorescent assay works in real biological samples. It suggests that this proposed method has the potential for application in the clinical detection of Cu2+ and PPi.

Abstract:A ratiometric fluorescence method is designed and exploited for the sensitive detection of Hg2+ and Fe3+ ions, which is prepared by simply mixing bovine serum albumin-protected gold/silver nanoclusters (BSA-Au/Ag NCs) with histidine-stabilized gold nanoclusters (His-Au NCs). The as-prepared Au NCs/Au-Ag NCs solution emits pink fluorescence and exhibits two emission peaks around 485 and 660 nm excited by 370 nm. The fluorescence of the Au NCs/Au-Ag NCs system at 660 nm is obviously quenched in the presence of Hg2+, while the fluorescence at 485 nm is stable against Hg2+, thereby resulting in the decrease of fluorescence intensity ratio (I660/I485) of the system. The detection limit for Hg2+ is low as 1.56 nM. With the addition of Fe3+, the dual emission peaks of the Au NCs/Au-Ag NCs in the system show a substantial decline simultaneously with different rate, leading to the Fe3+ ions concentration-dependent variation of I660/I485 value. The linear detection range for Fe3+ is from 5 to 1000 μM. Furthermore, the developed fluorimetric strategy has been employed for separately analysis of different ions Hg2+ and Fe3+ in fish samples with satisfactory results.
A fluorescent nanoprobe and paper-based nanofiber platform for detection and imaging of Fe3+ in actual samples and living cells

Abstract:In this study, a novel fluorescent nanoprobe (ZIF-90@FSS) was constructed using a zeolite imidazolium ester skeleton (ZIF-90) incorporating sodium fluorescein within its porous structure. Notably, this nanoprobe exhibited regular fluorescence "off" detection performance of Fe3+ in actual samples and living cells. The concentration range of 0-150 ng/mL exhibited a lowest detection limit of 0.26 ng/mL. A nanofiber paper-based platform (VL78/ZIF-90@FSS) was further developed by coupling the prepared nanoprobe to a multi-dimensional fiber paper via CN bonds, enabling rapid visual white light colorimetric and fluorescence imaging of Fe3+ within 2 min. The constructed nanoprobe and its paper-based detection platforms demonstrated a stable recovery range in tap water, beer, and soy sauce samples during spiking-recovery assessments. The recovery rates ranged from 98.46 % to 108.24 % for the nanoprobe and from 91.75 % to 108.71 % for the nanofiber paper-based platform. Therefore, the developed nano-fluorescent sensor and paper-based nanofiber sensing platform offer a promising strategy for the visual detection of Fe3+, while also presenting novel and valuable methods to investigate the regulatory mechanisms of Fe3+ in living cells.
A Dual-Emission Water-Soluble G-C3n4@auncs-based Fluorescent Probe for Label-Free and Sensitive Analysis of Trace Amounts of Ferrous (II) and Copper (II) Ions

Abstract:In this work, a new dual-emission water soluble graphitic carbon nitride@gold nanoclusters (WS-GCN@AuNCs) nanocomposite is synthesized by a simple method that AuNCs are in-situ grown on the surface of WS-GCN. This composite material emits yellow fluorescence with two emission wavelengths locating at 430 and 520 nm, and of which direct band gap is different from individual WS-GCN. Its fluorescence intensity at 520 nm is quenched rapidly in the presence of ferrous (Fe2+) and copper ions (Cu2+), and relevant fluorescent color changes from yellow to blue, ascribing to the photo-induced electron transfer (PET) mechanism. Furthermore, a reduction strategy of cysteine can be used to distinguish Fe2+ and Cu2+. According to this, a new dual-emission WSGCN@AuNCs-based fluorescent sensor is constructed to detect Fe2+ and Cu2+ with the detection limit of 1.73 and 3.63 nmol L-1, respectively. This proposed method not only exhibits highly selective and sensitive for analysis of Fe2+ and Cu2+ under existence of interfering cations, but possesses excellent performance for detection of trace amounts of Fe2+ and Cu2+ in environmental water.
Silver Nanoclusters Encapsulated into Metal-Organic Frameworks with Enhanced Fluorescence and Specific Ion Accumulation Toward the Microdot Array-Based Fluorimetric Analysis of Copper in Blood.

Abstract:Silver nanoclusters (AgNCs) were first coated with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and then encapsulated into porous metal-organic frameworks of ZIF-8 by the protein-mediated biomineralization process. Unexpectedly, the fluorescence intensities of the yielded AgNCs-BSA@ZIF-8 nanocomposites were discovered to be continuously enhanced during each of the BSA coating and ZIF-8 encapsulation steps. Compared to common AgNCs, greatly improved photostability and storage stability of AgNCs could also be expected. More importantly, having benefited from the ZIF-8 shells, the prepared nanocomposites could possess the specific accumulation and sensitive response to Cu2+ ions, resulting in the rational quenching of their fluorescence intensities. Moreover, AgNCs-BSA@ZIF-8 nanocomposites were coated onto the hydrophobic arraying slides toward a microdots array-based fluorimetric method for the fast and sensitive evaluation of Cu2+ ions. It was discovered that the developed fluorimetric strategy could ensure the high-throughput analysis of Cu2+ ions in wide pH range, and especially some harsh and high-salt media. It can allow for the detection of Cu2+ ions in blood with the concentrations ranging from 4.0 × 10-4 to 160 μM, thus serving as a new copper detection candidate to be widely applied in clinical test, food safety, and environmental monitoring fields.
Ratiometric Detection of Zn2+ and Cd2+ Based on Self-Assembled Nanoarchitectures with Dual Emissions Involving Aggregation Enhanced Emission (AEE) and Its Application

Abstract:Glutathione-Au nanoclusters (GSH-AuNCs) are known as typical luminophores with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) features, which can be triggered by low temperature, low pH values, and metal ions. However, these strict "triggers" restrict the application of this AIE probe under mild and neutral conditions. In this work, fluorescent amino-modified silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) and GSH-AuNCs can self-assemble into well-designed nanospheres through electrostatic interactions under physiological conditions. The hybrid probe of SiNPs@GSH-AuNCs exhibits dual emissions located at 450 nm from SiNPs and 570 nm originating from the aggregation enhanced emission (AEE) of GSH-AuNCs. Interestingly, the addition of Zn2+ or Cd2+ can connect the nanospheres to form large aggregates, so a unique second increase of AEE from GSH-AuNCs appears, while the emission of SiNPs remains constant to act as an internal reference. The fluorescence ratios (I570/I450) of SiNPs@GSH-AuNCs are positively correlated with Zn2+ or Cd2+ with the linear range from 1.5 μM to 500 μM. Most importantly, besides the advantages of dual emissions, high fluorescence brightness, and good stability, the SiNPs@GSH-AuNCs also exhibit excellent biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity, and have been successfully applied in zinc imaging in live cells. Furthermore, the proposed method is also used to measure Zn2+ and Cd2+ in real samples with satisfactory recoveries.

Abstract:The detection and reusage of transition-metal ions play a crucial role in human health and environmental protection. Recently, various analytical methods and substances have been successfully applied to probe or sense silver ions; however, rare representative examples have been presented regarding the simultaneous detection of silver and silver recycling with the elemental silver powder form. Herein, an unparalleled sensing mechanism for silver ions and recycling silver in its elemental form is exemplified by a fluorescent trinuclear zinc coordination cluster possessing the dual function of colorimetric sensing of silver and responding cupric ions. A Schiff-base-based trinuclear zinc coordination cluster, 1, with formula Zn3(L1)2(CH3COO)2(H2O)2, has been successfully synthesized by the initial exploration of multidentate ligand H2L1-((E)-2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-((2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzy-lidene)amino)phenol) with various metal ions under self-assembly reactions. Complex 1 is highly fluorescent in solution and as a solid, in addition to acting as a fluorescence sensor toward AgI in ethanol media. Compound 1 displays distinctive sensing of AgI through the fluorescence quenching effect at 576 nm and signal augment at 446 nm over 11 kinds of cations in the absence of interference. The proposed sensing mechanism is attributed to the ligands in 1 which interact with AgI; the ligands undergo oxidation cyclization reaction, leading to the formation of 2 with the formula Zn3(L2)4(CH3COO)2·2CH3CH2OH·H2O, and AgI reduction to elemental Ag powder. Compound 1 presents specific selectivity and sensitivity for AgI in ethanolic solution with a detection limit of 0.1722 μM. The orange color of 1 changes to colorless during the mixing of a small amount of AgI, revealing its potential practical application in naked-eye detection of AgI. Furthermore, 2 exhibits obvious fluorescence emission at 448 nm (λex = 380 nm) and selectively responds to CuII over 11 kinds of metal ions with the fluorescence "turn-off" owing to the formation of 3 in ethanolic solution; it also has a detection limit of 0.0226 μM.

Abstract:A creatively designed and constructed a multifunctional ratiometric fluorescence probe is reported by assembling glutathione (GSH)-protected gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) with fluorescein-doped mesoporous silica nanoparticle (FS) for the detection of Cu 2+ and Ag + ions, which could eliminate most interferences by self-calibration. Under the excitation at 450 nm, the fluorescence connected with AuNCs can rapidly respond by quenching or enhancement, respectively, for Cu 2+ and Ag + ions, while the fluorescein isothiocyante (FITC) fluorescence served as reference with negligible change. The fluorescence intensity ratio showed good linear relationships with Cu 2+ and Ag + concentrations in the range 0.5–10 μM and 0.1–8 μM, respectively. The detection limits were as low as 140 nM and 60 nM for Cu 2+ and Ag + ions, respectively. The color change induced by fluorescent intensity ratio variation could also be employed for visual discrimination. The AuNC-embedded FS (FS-Au) nanoprobe was successfully used for Cu 2+ and Ag + ion determination in drinking water and intracellular Cu 2+ imaging, which exhibits promising prospects in cost-effective and rapid determination of both Cu 2+ and Ag + with good sensitivity and selectivity.
Core‐Shell Upconversion Nanoparticle@Metal‐Organic Framework Fluorescent Nanoprobes for the Detection of Ferric Ions and Ferrous Ions

Abstract:In this study, we report a core‐shell fluorescent nanoprobe consisting of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) NaGdF4:Yb3+,Er3+ and metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) ZIF‐8. ZIF‐8 can specifically bind to ferric ions (Fe3+) to change the ultraviolet‐visible absorption spectrum of the probe, as a result the fluorescence of the probe was quenched and achieve the detection of Fe3+. At the same time, since rhodamine B (RhB) can quench the fluorescence of this probe, by introducing ferrous ions (Fe2+) and hydrogen peroxide, based on Fenton reaction, the fluorescence signal of this probe can be recovered after the degradation of RhB, so it also can be used to detect Fe2+. Importantly, as the first report of UCNP@MOF probes for detecting Fe3+ and Fe2+ ,respectively, this method exhibits a good selectivity and anti‐interference capability. Finally, it was used to detect Fe3+ and Fe2+ in the serum with excellent recoveries.

Dual-channel Probe of Carbon Dots Cooperating with Gold Nanoclusters Employed for Assaying Multiple Targets

Abstract:Herein, carbon dots (CD@Papain) from papain have been originally synthesized in aqueous solution along with a quantum yield of 6.2%, and showed cyan fluorescence at 435nm. Meanwhile, papain-templated Au nanoclusters (AuNCs@Papain) were prepared with the same precursor. On the basis of the two types of nanomaterials, CD@Papain and AuNCs@Papain have been designed to assemble as one nanosensor (termed as CD-AuNCs@Papain) through a typical cross-linking reaction. Significantly, it not only emitted the dual-emission fluorescent signals with the same excitation, but also can assay multiple targets through exhibiting cyan, yellow, and red emission respectively. Thereby, H2O2, doxycycline and I- can be detected by CD-AuNCs@Papain. The mechanism of the fluorescence variations of CD-AuNCs@Papain: Au(0) of CD-AuNCs@Papain oxidized as Au(I) by H2O2, the formation of hydrogen bonds between the CD-AuNCs@Papain and I-, the inner filter effect (IFE) occurring caused by tetracyclines. Meanwhile, the detection limits of H2O2, doxycycline and I- were obtained as 0.3nM, 0.2nM, and 0.6nM at a signal-to-ratio of 3, respectively. These results suggested that the nanoprobe here has provided the possibility for rapidly assaying multiple targets with the acceptable selectivity.
Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles with Aggregation Induced Emission Characteristics for Intracellular Fe3+ Sensing

Abstract:ABSTRACTIn this article, a novel zwitterionic conjugated polyelectrolyte containing tetraphenylethene unit was synthesized via Pd‐catalyzed Sonogashira reaction. The resulting polymer (P2), which exhibited typical aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) properties, was weakly fluorescent in dilute DMSO solution and showed bright fluorescence emissions when aggregated in DMSO/water mixtures or fabricated into conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPNs). The nanoparticles from P2 could be prepared by reprecipitation method with an average diameter around 23 nm. Notably, the cell‐staining efficiencies of lipid‐P2 nanoparticles could be enhanced with lipid encapsulation and these nanoparticles were endocytosed via caveolae‐mediated and clathrin‐mediated endocytosis pathways. Furthermore, the lipid‐P2 nanoparticles with low cytotoxicity, high photostability and efficient cell staining ability could be employed for in vitro detection of Fe3+ ions in A549 cells. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Currently, fluorescence detection has become a hot spot in the field of life science research. However, the fluorescence detection system faces some challenges arising from increased complex degree of detected substances, low sensitivity and difficult reusability of fluorescence substrates, as well easily being affected by external environment interference, causing that there is an urgent demand for developing new and sensitive fluorescence substrates. In this work, Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were first prepared via a facile hydrothermal method and then silver-deposited Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposites were fabricated. As a result, the significant fluorescent enhancement was realized for as-obtained Fe 3 O 4 /Ag as substrates, in which Ag nanoparticles played a vital role in surface enhanced fluorescence (SEF) effect mainly depending on their surface plasmon resonance to produce local electromagnetic enhancement. In addition, the liquid fluorescent substrate showed the stronger fluorescent signals in comparison with the solid fluorescent substrate that was subject to aggregation-caused quenching effect, which could be evaluated by the difference of enhancement factors for detecting Rhodamine B dyes which reached 42.9-fold and 12.5-fold, respectively, as well as by the difference of fluorescence stability for 10.0% and 35.9% intensity decay rate, respectively. Therefore, such composite materials will provide bright ideas and guides for particular applications in fluorescence detection.

Abstract:A dual‐emission ratiometric fluorescent sensing film for metal ion detection is designed. This dual‐emission film is successfully prepared from chitosan, graphitic carbon nitride (g‐C3N4), and gold nanoclusters (Au NCs). Here, it is shown that the g‐C3N4 not only serves as the fluorescence emission source, but also enhances the mechanical and thermal stability of the film. Meanwhile, the Au NCs are adsorbed on the surface of chitosan film by the electrostatic interaction. The as‐prepared dual‐emission film can selectively detect Cu2+, leading to the quench of red fluorescence of Au NCs, whereas the blue fluorescence from g‐C3N4 persists. The ratio of the two fluorescence intensities depends on the Cu2+ concentration and the fluorescence color changes from orange red to yellow, cyan, and finally to blue with increasing Cu2+ concentration. Thus, the as‐prepared dual‐emission film can be worked as ratiometric sensing paper for Cu2+ detection. Furthermore, the film shows high sensitivity and selectivity, with low limit of detection (LOD) (10 ppb). It is observed that this novel gold‐cluster‐based dual‐emission ratiometric fluorescent sensing paper is an easy and convenient way for detecting metal ions. It is believed that this research work have created another avenue for the detection of metal ions in the environment.
