Abstract:Herein, we reported a simple one-pot green method for preparation of fluorescent copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) with a high quantum yield up to 8.6%, using glutathione as the stabilizing agent. The as-prepared Cu NCs had good water solubility, excellent stability and ultrafine size through the characterization of UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Experimental results showed that the fluorescence of Cu NCs was linearly quenched by the Fe3+ concentrations in the range of 1-100 mu M, with the detection limit of 0.3 mu M. Abstract:Herein, we demonstrate a facile, straightforward and green method for synthesis of highly red-emitting fluorescent bimetallic Au/Ag nanoclusters (NCs) employing lipoic acid as both a reducing agent and a protecting agent. The as-prepared Au/Ag NCs exhibited bright red emission with a strong peak centered at 630 nm (quantum yield measured as 6.4%), and showed excellent stability and remarkable temperature-dependent fluorescent property. The fluorescence responses were reversible and linear to the environment temperature from 20 to 65 C with a resolution as high as 1.34 degrees C, which allows its potential application as a fluorescent nanothermometer. Moreover, Au/Ag NCs were also explored for selective and sensitive determination of Fe3+ based on the specific quenching of the fluorescence by Fe3+, and explored for fluorescence imaging Fe3+ in living HeLa cells thanks to their very low cytotoxicity. Abstract:In this paper, growth hormone releasing peptide-6 (GHRP-6) is a bioactive polypeptide and acts as the reducing agent and capping ligand for synthesis of bright green fluorescent gold nanoclusters (GHRP-6-Au NCs) by a simple and environmental-friendly aqueous method, with the assistance of NaBr as the fluorescent sensitizer. The obtained GHRP-6-Au NCs had high fluorescent quantum yield (10.7%), and the fluorescence was strongly quenched by the existence of trace Fe3+. Thus, a new and highly sensitive sensor for the assay of Fe3+ was constructed based on the analyte-induced fluorescent quenching mechanism. The sensor had a low detection limit of 1.4µM (S/N=3) and a wide linear range of 2-1000µM. Besides, GHRP-6-Au NCs exhibited low cytotoxicity and high biocompatibility for cell imaging.

Abstract:Herein we report that few-atom silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs) can be effective energy acceptors for upconversion phosphors (UCPs). A luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET) probe for biothiols was constructed by decorating UCPs with dithiol-stabilized Ag NCs. Owing to the unique properties of ultrasmall NCs, properties which bridge the gap between those of small molecules and those of nanoparticles, the use of approximately 1.9 nm Ag NCs as energy acceptors endows the probe with high energy-transfer efficiency, good biocompatibility, and flexibility. The UCP-Ag NC nanoprobe enables rapid and robust target assay in solutions. It was also uploaded into living cells and used to detect intracellular biothiol levels with high discrimination. Moreover, the probe shows transportability in vivo and can be used for tissue imaging. The facile growth of few-atom metal NCs on diverse templates may enable the development of various nanoprobes combining UCPs and metal NCs.

Abstract:In our work, a simple and fast synthesis method is provided to synthesize silver nanoclusters (AgNCs). In this method, with using polyacrylic acid (PAA) as a template, the silver ions were reduced to silver nanoclusters by irradiation reduction at room temperature. The prepared silver nanoclusters (PAA–AgNCs) with average particle size of 1.98 ± 0.79 nm have a fluorescence property, and their physical and chemical properties can be controlled by absorbed dose, PAA/Ag + mole ratio and other factors. The fluorescence stability of the PAA–AgNCs is good, and it is unique in that the fluorescence emission of the s PAA–AgNCs depends on the excitation wavelength. In addition, based on the fluorescence quenching phenomenon of PAA–AgNCs in the presence of Cr 3+ ion, we established a simple and efficient method for the detection of Cr 3+ ion by using PAA–AgNCs as fluorescent probes.

Abstract:We present a facile method for the preparation of red-emitting and water-soluble silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs) using dihydrolipoic acid and sodium borohydride as the template and reducing agent. Ethanol solvent is demonstrated to endow Ag NCs with dramatically enhanced fluorescence; therefore, the Ag NCs are synthesized in ethanol/water solution (e/w-Ag NCs) instead of aqueous solution. Specific trivalent chromium (Cr3+) recognition capability of the e/w-Ag NCs can thus be obtained on the basis of its fluorescence quenching. The mechanisms for fluorescence enhancement and quenching of the e/w-Ag NCs triggered by ethanol and Cr3+, respectively, are investigated in detail. Next, a fluorescence method for detection of Cr3+ is established and its analytical performance is evaluated: the detection limit for Cr3+ is 0.71 μM and the linear range is from 2 to 40 μM. The fluorescent probe exhibits sufficient sensitivity and good selectivity toward Cr3+, illustrating that it has great promise for practical application in Cr3+ detection.

Abstract:In this work, a simple and sensitive Cr(VI) sensor is proposed based on fluorescent polyethyleneimine-stabilized Ag nanoclusters, which allows the determination over a wide concentration range of 0.1 nM-3.0 μM and with a detection limit as low as 0.04 nΜ and a good selectivity. The quenching mechanism was discussed in terms of the absorption and fluorescence spectra, suggesting that Cr(VI) is connected to Ag nanoclusters by hydrogen bond between the oxygen atom at the vertex of tetrahedron structure of Cr(VI) and the amino nitrogen of polyethyleneimine that surrounded Ag nanoclusters and electron transfer from Ag nanoclusters to highly electron-deficient Cr(VI) results in fluorescence quenching. Despite the failure to quench the fluorescence efficiently, Cr(III) can also be measured using the proposed Ag nanoclusters by being oxidized to Cr(VI) in alkaline solution (pH ∼ 9) containing H2O2. Therefore, our approach could be used to detect Cr(VI), Cr(III) and the total chromium level in aqueous solution. In addition, Cr(VI) analysis in real water samples were satisfactory, indicating this method could be practically promising for chromium measurements.

Abstract:Selective detection of Al3+ is of great significance both for the benefit of human health and environmental safety considerations. In this work, a sensitive and selective fluorescence assay for Al3+ was proposed based on the green-emissive Cu nanoclusters (Cu NCs). Different from the commonly reported works, the green emissive Cu NCs showed dual emission bands at 450 and 510 nm, attributed to the reaction product between polyvinyl pyrrolidone and ascorbic acid and the Cu core, respectively. Al3+ could induce the aggregation of Cu NCs by forming covalent bonds, which results in the enhancement of photoluminescence intensity. This enhancement phenomenon is rather selective to Al3+, which endows the detection in real samples. These results provide new insights for the fluorescence mechanisms of metal NCs, which also provided a functional luminescent material for various applications, such as chemical sensing, bioimaging and photoelectric devices.
Novel "on-off" fluorescence sensing for rapid and accurate determination of Cr3+ based on g-CNQDs

Abstract:Cr3+ is one of the most essential trace elements in living organisms and plays a vital role in human metabolism. However, both deficiency and excess intake of Cr3+ can be harmful to the human body. Therefore, the quantitative determination of Cr3+ is of great significance in the field of life science. Based on this, in this study, a g-CNQDs@p-acetaminophenol fluorescence sensing system was developed for the quantitative detection of Cr3+ in actual complex samples. G-CNQDs were synthesized with sodium citrate and urea as precursors. The fluorescence signal was enhanced by the synergistic effect between p-acetaminophenol (APAP) and g-CNQDs. The fluorescence quenching phenomenon can be produced when Cr3+ is introduced into the fluorescence-enhanced g-CNQDs@p-acetaminophenol system. An "on-off" fluorescence sensing system was constructed based on g-CNQDs@p-acetaminophenol for the quantitative detection of Cr3+. The experimental data showed a wide linear region in the concentration range of 0.64-63.0 μM, and the detection limit was as low as 0.23 μM. The construction of the sensor system broadens the research field for the practical application of Cr3+.

Abstract:Metallic nanoclusters (NCs) have attracted special attention from researchers due to their interesting optical properties. In this experiment, we proposed a facile one-step method for the synthesis of bimetallic gold-copper nanoclusters (AuCuNCs). The prepared AuCuNCs were characterized by fluorescence spectroscopy (FL), UV-vis absorption spectrum, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), etc. The emission peak of the prepared AuCuNCs was located at 455 nm and showed blue luminescence under the excitation of 365 nm UV light. Furthermore, after the addition of Cr3+ and S2O82- ions, the FL emission intensity of AuCuNCs was significantly reduced at 455 nm and there was a color change of diminished blue luminescence under UV lamp. The AuCuNCs exhibited excellent linearity and sensitivity for the detection of Cr3+ and S2O82- ions. The limits of detection (LOD) for the Cr3+ and S2O82- ions were calculated to be 1.5 and 0.037 μM, respectively. Finally, the recoveries of Cr3+ and S2O82- ions in Runxi Lake and tap water were measured by standard addition recovery test and were 96.66 ∼ 116.29 %, 95.75 ∼ 119.4 %.

Abstract:A facile, straightforward, and green method was reported for the preparation of water-soluble and highly luminescent silver nanoclusters (AgNCs) using captopril (Capt) as a stabilizing agent. The as-prepared Capt@AgNCs exhibited bright red emission with a strong peak centered at 637 nm and showed low toxicity and good stability. Interestingly, the AgNCs displayed temperature sensitivity based on obvious temperature dependence of the fluorescence emission intensity. Furthermore, the AgNCs showed a good reversible and linear response to the environment temperature over the range from 10 °C to 45 °C with a high resolution and activation energy, which allowed its potential application as a fluorescent nanothermometer. In addition, the AgNCs were prepared to monitor pH via the fluorescence intensity of AgNCs responding sensitively to pH fluctuating within a wide range from 2.08 to 6.06. The study provides promising applications as a convenient and eco-friendly fluorescent temperature and pH nanosenser in environmental and biological fields.

Abstract:In this study, fluorescent copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) have been efficiently synthesized in a novel strategy via sonochemical method, using N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) as reducing and stabilizing reagent. The preparation of Cu NCs could complete within 15 min due to the ultrasonic radiation treatment. The obtained NAC-Cu NCs exhibited red fluorescence at λem 630 nm. Silver ions could significantly induce fluorescence quenching of NAC-Cu NCs. Subsequently, a detection method for Ag+ with high response sensitivity and selectivity was constructed. The proposed method displayed a good linear relationship in the Ag+ concentration range of 1.64×10-10-1.16×10-8 M. The limit of detection (LOD) was as low as 7.76×10-11 M (signal/noise = 3). In addition, the practical application was further evaluated with environmental water samples, and the tested results were compared with those obtained by the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) method. The satisfactory recoveries (98.50%-101.6%) showed that the fluorescent detection method had potential application in environmental monitoring field.

Abstract:A convenient and sensitive dual-signal visualization method is constructed for detection of trivalent chromium ions (Cr3+) based on fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) and glutathione-modified gold nanoparticles (GSH-Au NPs). The fluorescence of CDs can be quenched by GSH-Au NPs due to the inner filter effect. Cr3+ induces aggregation of GSH-Au NPs because of the coordination with GSH on the surface of Au NPs, leading to the red shift of surface plasmon resonance absorption of Au NPs that provides a "turn-on" fluorescence and colorimetric assay for Cr3+. The fluorescence/colorimetric dual signal detection shows high sensitivity for Cr3+ with wide detection linear ranges (0.5-70 μM for fluorescence detection and 2-50 μM for colorimetric detection) and low detection limits (0.31 μM for fluorescence detection and 0.30 μM for colorimetric detection). Besides, the method has high selectivity for Cr3+ and can be used for detection of Cr3+ in lake water and tap water samples, showing great potential for visual detection of environmental Cr3+.

Abstract:A simple, rapid, sensitive and field-portable colorimetric technique for the determination of Cr(III) in aqueous solution based on an aggregation-induced color transition of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) has been developed. AuNPs were first functionalized with a dithiocarbamate-modified N-benzyl-4-(pyridin-4-ylmethyl)aniline ligand (BP-DTC). Chelation of Cr(III) by several of these ligands, bound to different nanoparticles, led to nanoparticle aggregation in solution. This gave rise to a color change from wine-red to blue that was discernible by the naked eye and an easily measurable alteration in the extinction spectrum of the particles. The method could be used to determine Cr(III) with a detection limit of 31ppb. Furthermore, selective detection of trace Cr(III) in aqueous solution in the presence of 12 other transition metal ions has been achieved. Toward the goal of practical applications, the sensor has been further evaluated with a view to monitoring Cr(III) in nutritional supplements and the blood of diabetes patients and also applied in the indirect determination of Cr(VI) in waste water.

Abstract:Due to the polydispersity of nanocrystals and their unknown structures, in many cases it is difficult to conduct in-depth investigation on the sensing mechanism when nanocrystals are used as fluorescent probes; however, their smaller counterparts–structurally well-defined gold nanoclusters as sensors–have provided opportunities to do so. Herein, an example is provided by Wu et al. The potential of glutathione-capped Au25 nanocluster as silver-ion sensor is evaluated; more importantly, three factors are revealed to be responsible for the unique fluorescence enhancement of Au25(SG)18 illuminated in the image.
