Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:An exclusive anti‐Markovnikov hydroamination as well as hydroalkoxylation of allylic alcohols catalyzed by a simple catalyst Y(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2 has been developed, providing a variety of γ‐amino and γ‐alkoxy alcohols in good yields under mild conditions. Moreover, this protocol is applied to the synthesis of drug molecules Propipocaine and Proroxan. The rare‐earth catalyst features readily available, wide substrate compatability, exclusive anti‐Markovnikov selectivity, and performs in the absence of a base or an additive.

Abstract:We report herein a Rh(III)-catalyzed alkenyl CH activation protocol for the coupling of oxadiazoles with alkynes and synthesis of 2-acylamino and 2-amino pyridines, an important heterocyclic scaffold for various naturals products and synthetic pharmaceuticals bearing a readily reacting functional group. The selective protection/deprotection of amino groups through simple solvent switching, good functional group compatibility, superior product yield, and high regioselectivity are some of the notable synthetic features witnessed in this reaction protocol.

Abstract:Despite the current progress achieved in asymmetric hydroacylations, highly enantioselective catalytic addition of unfunctionalized aldehydes to internal alkenes remains an unsolved challenge. Here, using a coordination-assisted strategy, we developed a rhodium-catalyzed regio- and enantioselective addition of unfunctionalized aldehydes to internal alkenes such as enamides and β,γ-unsaturated amides. Valuable α-amino ketones and 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds were directly obtained with high enantioselectivity from readily available materials.

Abstract:Rh-catalyzed anti-Markovnikov hydrosilylation of terminal alkenes and tertiary silanes using readily-available PPh3 as the ligand was reported. This method facilitated the effective synthesis of alkylsilanes with a wide substrate scope and high yields. Remarkably, both an unprecedented catalytic efficiency (TON up to 10,000) and excellent selectivity for the reaction of styrene and diethoxymethylsilane were achieved.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic compounds are widely used in materials science, so it is highly desirable to develop an efficient and practical approach to them. In this paper, a novel, efficient and practical method for the rhodium(III)-catalyzed desulfination of sodium arenesulfinates and oxidative annulation with alkynes has been developed, and the corresponding polycyclic aromatic compounds with multiple substituents were prepared in moderate to good yields. The reactions proceeded through sequential rhodium(III)-catalyzed desulfination, intermolecular addition of aryl-Rh(III) complexes to dialkyl but-2-ynedioates and diarylalkynes, and intramolecular oxidative annulation via C-H activation. The present method is the first example of the oxidative annulation of arene derivatives with two different alkynes. Therefore, it should afford a useful strategy for the synthesis of polycyclic aromatic compounds.

Abstract:One-pot syntheses of 1-benzyl-, 1-alkoxyl-, and 1-alkylamino- isoquinolines through automatic directing group (DGauto)-assisted, rhodium(III)-catalyzed aryl C-H activation and annulation with internal alkynes were developed. The reactions affording 1-benzylisoquinolines involve a cascade oximation of diarylacetylenes with hydroxylamine, forming aryl benzyl ketone oxime, and oxime-assisted rhodium(III)-catalyzed aryl C-H activation and followed annulation with another molecule of diarylacetylene in a one-pot manner. The formation of 1-alkoxyl/amino isoquinolines includes the addition of nucleophilic alcohols or amines to aryl nitriles, imine-assisted rhodium-catalyzed aryl C-H activation, and subsequent alkyne annulation.

Abstract:An efficient and novel bromide-catalyzed oxo-amination of aryl alkenes towards the synthesis of α-amine ketones using air as the oxygen source under electrophotocatalytic conditions was developed. The reaction was characterized by simple operation, a broad substrate scope, high atom economy, and mild reaction conditions. The mechanistic results suggested that the generation of 2-bromo-1-phenylethanone via oxo-bromination of aryl alkenes was supposed as the key step in this transformation.

Abstract:We describe syntheses of n-yohimbane and alloyohimbane using Rh-catalyzed hydrocarbonylation, which provides a practical methodology to synthesize a delta-lactam from a secondary homoallyl amine. We have also observed an unexpected transformation where the amine proton served as a hydride to participate in hydrocarbonylation. The D-labeled experimental results and preliminary DFT-calculations suggest that the transformation can be rationalized by oxidative cleavage of the homoallyl amines to a metal hydride complex.

Abstract:The direct alkylation of the α-position of aldehydes is an effective method for accessing a wide range of structurally diverse aldehydes, yet tert-alkylation has proven to be a challenging task. In this study, we present a novel radical-mediated tert-alkylation approach targeting the α-position of aldehydes, enabling the synthesis of complex aliphatic aldehydes. The transformation is initiated by the interaction between an in situ generated enamine intermediate and α-bromo sulfone, forming an electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex, followed by consecutive 1,4- and 1,3-functional group migrations. This protocol operates under metal-free and mild photochemical conditions, delivering a broad scope of products and providing new mechanistic insights into radical rearrangement reactions.

Abstract:The implementation of non‐noble metals mediated chemistry is a major goal in homogeneous catalysis. Borrowing hydrogen/hydrogen autotransfer (BH/HA) reaction, as a straightforward and sustainable synthetic method, has attracted considerable attention in the development of non‐noble metal catalysts. Herein, we report a tungsten‐catalyzed N‐alkylation reaction of anilines with primary alcohols via BH/HA. This phosphine‐free W(phen)(CO)4 (phen=1,10‐phenthroline) system was demonstrated as a practical and easily accessible in‐situ catalysis for a broad range of amines and alcohols (up to 49 examples, including 16 previously undisclosed products). Notably, this tungsten system can tolerate numerous functional groups, especially the challenging substrates with sterically hindered substituents, or heteroatoms. Mechanistic insights based on experimental and computational studies are also provided.

Abstract:Metal-catalyzed alkene arylalkoxylation is a powerful complexity-building strategy for the synthesis of oxygen heterocycles from simple γ-unsaturated alcohols, but only a few examples of catalytic enantioselective methods exist. Herein, an efficient palladium-catalyzed enantioselective arylalkoxylation of γ-hydroxyalkenes with aryl halides is reported. The salient features of this transformation include a remarkable broad substrate scope, mild reaction conditions, and good functional group tolerance, delivering a series of chiral tetrahydrofurans containing a tertiary or quaternary stereocenter in good yields with up to 95% ee. The Xu10 ligand with a suitable side-arm was responsible for the high reactivity and good enantioselectivity of this transformation.

Abstract:Abstract Organophosphines are an important class of ligands widely used in organic chemistry. Although great progress has recently been made in the rapid construction of new phosphines through Rh- or Ru-catalyzed C–H bond functionalizations, synthetic access to more diverse phosphines remains a challenge. We describe an efficient process for the rhodium-catalyzed phosphorus(III)-directed hydroarylation of internal alkynes to generate various alkenylated and 2′,6′-dialkenylated biarylphosphines with high selectivity. A range of diverse alkynes and phosphines were effectively prepared with broad functional-group compatibility under the optimized conditions. In addition, the developed protocol can be extended to modify chiral phosphine ligands, providing enantioenriched alkenylated phosphines without erosion of the enantiomeric excess.

Abstract:Direct C-H coupling promises to revolutionize the field of polymer synthesis but can be severely plagued by the site selectivity issue. To address this issue, we report herein the development of a directed redox-neutral cross-dehydrogenative C-H cross-coupling polymerization method under transition metal catalysis. A rhodium catalytic protocol is established for arylhydrazine alkenylation polymerization on hydrazine and acrylate coupling partners. The internal oxidant role of the N-amino group ensures its effective directing activity only for one C-H activation event, thus allowing the elimination of defect C-H coupling. The polymerization system reported herein features a simple catalytic component, mild reaction conditions, and a broad monomer and correspondingly polymer and functional scope.

Abstract:<p>An efficient method was developed for the alkylation of 2‐arylquinazolin‐4(3H)‐ones with cyclopropanols. The desired products <i>β</i>‐aryl ketones bearing the quinazolin‐4(3H)‐one scaffold were synthesized by Rh(III)‐catalyzed C−H activation of arenes and C−C cleavage of cyclopropanols. This method has a wide range of benzyl/phenyl substrate applicability and provides a theoretical guidance for our research to study quinazoline compounds.</p>
