Abstract:Four-dimensional (4-D) trajectory planning with conflict-free for a large-scale number of aircraft under meteorological influence is an essential problem in air traffic control (ATC) automation and it is challenging for existing methods to be applied effectively. A trajectory planning method with dynamic environmental adaptability, high safety, superior real-time performance, as well as compatibility with airspace operation rules is necessary for the implement of trajectory-based and autonomous operation. A Disassembly-Sequential method is proposed to solve this problem. Firstly, a Disassembly theorem for conflict resolution is demonstrated, which decomposes the multi-aircraft conflict resolution problem (a non-deterministic polynomial problem) into multiple sub-problems of pairwise aircraft conflict resolution (polynomial problems) with rigorous proof. Under this foundation, a scenario of multi-aircraft with multiple types of conflicts could be decomposed into many basic conflict-resolving scenarios that have clear relationships, making a complex problem be solved with good interpretability. Then a Sequential algorithm in hyperplane space analytic geometry is designed, which resolves the conflicts caused by meteorological avoidance areas, aircraft intersecting, and tailgating sequentially by feasible trajectory adjustment (such as altitude, direction, and speed), reducing the calculation time of trajectory planning significantly. Finally, to validate the compatibility, sensitivity, and reliability of this method, substantial simulations with different airspace and aircraft numbers were conducted, thus confirming the applicability and effectiveness of the Disassembly-Sequential method for decision-making support in real-world ATC systems.
