Abstract:We report a new synthetic strategy to derive functional poly(disubstituted acetylenes) (PDSAs) through "phenol-yne click reaction". The phenol-containing PDSA was prepared by the polymerization of the triisopropylsilane (TIPS)-protected 4-((4- fluorophenyl) ethynyl) phenol monomer and by a subsequent deprotection step. Then, different functional groups (e. g., ester and amide) were grafted onto the PDSA side chains via the highly efficient "phenol-yne click reaction". Thepost-polymerization modification was carried out under mild conditions (at 40 degrees C, in common solvent) under an air atmosphere for a short time (4 h).The structures of the products were well characterized by GPC, NMR, and FTIR techniques and satisfactory data were collected. The data indicated that the phenol groups on the precursor PDSA were highly active to react with activated acetylenic compounds bearing functional groups intolerable to direct polymerization. This is the first example of the preparation of phenol-containing PDSA and the use of it as a precursor to prepare functional PDSAs. Besides the activated ester, thiol-ene click reaction, Michael addition reaction and Cu(I) catalysed alkyne-azide click reaction, we added a new tool in the tool-box for the synthesis of functional polymers.

Abstract:The utility of aza-Michael addition chemistry for post-polymerization functionalization of enzymatically prepared polyesters is established. For this, itaconate ester and oligoethylene glycol are selected as monomers. A Candida Antarctica lipase B catalyzed polycondensation reaction between the two monomers provides the polyesters, which carry an activated carbon-carbon double bond in the polymer backbone. These electron deficient alkenes represent suitable aza-Michael acceptors and can be engaged in a nucleophilic addition reaction with small molecular mono-amines (aza-Michael donors) to yield functionalized linear polyesters. Abstract:Two disubstituted acetylenes bearing a vinyl group at one end (M1 and M2) were synthesized and polymerized by WCl6-Ph4Sn catalyst. The expected poly(disubstituted acetylenes) PDSAs (P1 and P2) were obtained in high yields. Both P1 and P2 have reactive vinyl groups on their side chains, thus they were used as precursors to be subsequently modified with a mercapto compound through the thiol-ene click reaction to produce the novel PDSAs (P1S and P2S) in good yield. The chemical structures of the polymers were carefully characterized by standard spectroscopic methods such as gel permeation chromatography (GPC), NMR, NMR and FTIR techniques, and satisfactory data were collected. The post-polymerization modification of P1 took a long reaction time (3 days) to convert P1 to P1S because the ene-functionality at the end of side chain of P1 links to a saturated alkyl segment. By using an activated ene-functionality (alpha,beta-unsaturated vinyl), the modification of P2 to P2S took only 1 day under mild conditions. Moreover, the activated end-ene group allowed the post-polymerization modification of P2 by Michael addition, which was confirmed using butylamine as the representative amine compound and the characterization data indicated the validity of the expected P2N. The thermal analysis results indicated that the modified polymers were highly stable thermally with a decomposition temperature over at least 240 degrees C, except for P2N, which showed lower stability due to unstable imine groups. Meanwhile, it was found that the modified polymers P1S and P2S were fluorescent and showed similar emission efficiency to their precursors P1 and P2. These results indicated that the thiol-ene click reaction and Michael addition reaction are accessible routes for post-polymerization modification to generate novel functional PDSAs.

Abstract:Development of renewable bio-based unsaturated polyesters is undergoing a renaissance, typified by the use of itaconate and fumarate monomers. The electron-deficient C=C bond found on the corresponding polyesters allows convenient post-polymerisation modification to give a wide range of polymer properties; this is notably effective for the addition of nucleophilic pendants. However, preservation of unsaturated functionality is blighted by two undesirable side-reactions, branching/crosslinking and C=C isomerisation. Herein, a tentative kinetic study of diethylamine addition to model itaconate and fumarate diesters highlights the significance of undesirable C=C isomerisation. In particular, it shows that reversible isomerisation from itaconate to mesaconate (a poor Michael acceptor) is in direct competition with aza-Michael addition, where the amine Michael donor acts as an isomerisation catalyst. We postulate that undesired formation of mesaconate is responsible for the long reaction times previously reported for itaconate polyester post-polymerisation modification. This study illustrates the pressing need to overcome this issue of C=C isomerisation to enhance post-polymerisation modification of bio-based unsaturated polyesters. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Abstract:We report the recent progress in the preparation of functional poly(disubstituted acetylene)s (PDSAs) through post-polymerization modification routes. The metathesis polymerization of disubstituted acetylene monomers activated by Mo/W-Sn complex catalysts, which do not tolerate highly polar functionalities, was assumed to be a key step in the polymer synthetic procedures. We and other groups have explored several approaches to prepare PDSAs with latent reactive functionalities, which are inactive to Mo/W-Sn complex catalysts but can be used as highly reactive sites for post-polymerization modification. Click chemistry, Michael-type addition reactions, the use of activated esters and other strategies are demonstrated by recently published examples. These works indicate that post-polymerization modification is an efficient route to the synthesis of various functional PDSAs.

Abstract:We report synthetic routes to functional poly(disubstituted acetylenes) (PDSAs) through the combination of the activated ester strategy and Cu(I) catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction. Direct polymerization of a disubstituted acetylene monomer with an end-alkyne group under the catalysis of WCl6-Ph4Sn led to the poly(monosubstituted acetylene) by-product (P1) but not the expected PDSA bearing end-alkyne groups. Protection of the end-alkyne group could lead to the expected product but this route has low efficiency. Using the activated ester functionalized PDSA as a precursor (P0) and propargylamine as the modifier, the end-alkyne groups were easily attached onto the side chains of PDSA (P2). Based on the intermediate, the functional group could be efficiently modified onto the intermediate by reacting with azide containing reagents (using benzyl azide as a model) through the CuAAC click reaction, and finally the triazole functionalized PDSA (P3) was derived. The combination of the activated ester and the CuAAC click reaction strategy bestows the synthetic route with the advantages of high efficiency, mild reaction conditions and potentially plentiful functionalities (due to the versatile azide reagents).

Abstract:Post-polymerization modification is a facile and efficient method for the generation of diverse functional polymers. Herein, polymer-based molecular arrays were obtained by using sequential modification. First, periodic polyketone P0 was synthesized via acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization of α,ω-diene M0. Oxime chemistry was employed in the functionalization of the ketone moieties of P0 using three commercially available alkoxyamine hydrochlorides. Finally, electrophilic alkoxyetherification, a four-component reaction, was employed in the modification of alkene groups on polymer main chains using N-bromosuccinimide (NBS), tetrahydrofuran, and fluorinated carboxylic acid. Complete conversion of reactive sites was observed in both steps, and the two modification reactions exhibited excellent compatibility. The thermal properties of the polymers as thermal stability, and glass transition and melting behaviours were investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

Abstract:The C-H activation has been a hot research area in organic chemistry, and the most difficult one is the C(sp(3))-H activation. Although the C-H activation has been introduced to the research of synthetic polymer chemistry, the polymerization developed based on C(sp(3))-H activation is rarely reported, which will enrich the tools for the preparation of functional polymers. In this work, palladium/benzoic acid catalyzed polymerization of internal diynes and diols through C(sp(3))-H activation was successfully established. Regio-and stereoregular functional poly(allylic ether)s with 100% E-isomers and high weight average molecular weights (M-w up to 33200) were prepared in excellent yield (98%). The reaction mechanism was unveiled with the assistance of density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, the thin films of polymers display high refractive indices and low optical dispersions. The polymer containing tetraphenylethene moiety displays the aggregation-enhanced emission feature and could be used to generate 2D fluorescent photopattern. Thus, this work not only establishes a powerful polymerization based on C(sp(3))-H activation, but also furnishes functional polymers for diverse applications.

Abstract:We have developed a novel palladium-catalyzed arylative dearomatization and subsequent aromatization/dearomatization/aza-Michael addition process of Ugi adducts, enabling the rapid construction of diverse zephycarinatine and zephygranditine scaffolds containing two adjacent quaternary carbon stereocenters with excellent chemoselectivity and stereoselectivity in a rapid, step-economical, and highly efficient manner. This approach shows broad substrate scope and excellent functional-group tolerance with diverse electron-rich and electron-deficient aromatic substrates. Abstract:Living radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and a fluorescent comonomer with 2-bromo-2-methylpropionic acid 3-azidopropyl ester and 2-bromo-2-methylhept-6-yn-3-one as initiators has been successfully employed for the synthesis of fluorescently tagged azide and alkyne terminated PMMA with close to that predicted, PDI < 1.20, and good first order kinetics as expected for a living polymerisation. Cotton and organic resin surfaces have been functionalised with alkyne groups using a condensation with 4-chlorocarbonylbutyric acid prop-2-ynyl ester. The surfaces have been further modified using a Huisgen [2 + 3] cycloaddition ("click") reaction of polymeric and small molecule azides. Different functional azides, mono azido-PEG and a new fluorescent hostasol derivative have been prepared and tested as model substrates for cotton surface modification. FTIR, tensiometry, FE-SEM and confocal spectroscopy have been used to characterize the modified surfaces. Tensiometry shows an increase in the hydrophobicity of the surface; verified by FE-SEM which shows a change in surface morphology. The use of the fluorescence label allows fluorescent and confocal microscopy to demonstrate the surface reactions. This approach is shown to be very general allowing soft and hard surfaces with different geometries to be modified. In particular it is an excellent method to alter the nature of organic resins allowing the incorporation of many different functionalities.

Abstract:The protecting-group-free synthesis of reactive functional group containing poly(ester amide)s (PEAs) is reported. The synthesis of the PEAs is based on the nucleophilic ring-opening polyaddition of terephthalaziridine (TP-Az) with comonomers baring carboxylic acid and phenols as nucleophiles. The comonomers also contained the reactive functional groups aldehyde, ketone, ester, alcohol, furan, disulfide and siloxane, which were incorporated into the resulting PEAs without any detectable side reactions. A multicomponent polymerization was conducted to further demonstrate the versatility of this method. These PEAs are amorphous with high thermal stability (T d,5 % : 231–324 °C) and a have wide range of glass transition temperatures (T g ) (32–142 °C). The disulfide and siloxane-containing copolymers PEAs selectively degrade in the presence of dithiothreitol and fluoride respectively. The PEAs also underwent alkaline hydrolysis to yield a potential TP-Az, potentially facilitating chemical recycling of these PEAs.

Abstract:We report on the facile synthesis of a range of new linear functionalized polyesters by controlled atom transfer radical polyaddition reactions. One bis-styrenic type monomer, 1,2-bis(4-vinylbenzyloxy) ethane (AA), and two bis-methacrylate type ATRP initiators, 1,2-bis(2-bromoisobutyryloxy) ethane (BB) and bis[2-(2-bromoisobutyryloxy) ethyl] disulfide (BssB), were synthesized. The polymerizations of monomer AA with BB and BssB were carried out in anisole at 0 degrees C, using Cu/CuBr2 coupled with N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)octylamine (BPMOA) as the catalyst. The polymerization kinetics were investigated and the polymers were characterized by GPC and NMR, both confirming the step-wise mechanism with the formation of the expected linear polyesters having pendent bromides. When BssB was used, additional disulfide groups were incorporated in the polyester main chain, imparting a tunable degradation mechanism to the polyester. Moreover, the pendent bromides on the polymers could serve as initiation sites or precursors to azides to prepare biodegradable graft copolymers. This has been proven by two examples, reactivating the pendent bromides at room temperature to initiate the ATRP of other methacrylates, and transforming these groups into azido-groups by substitution reaction followed by click chemistry with alkynyl-terminated polyethylene glycol.

Abstract:Robust methodologies for polymer post-synthesis functionalization enable preparation of new high-performance material scaffolds with uniquely tailored properties. Here, we demonstrate that polycarbonates containing pendant fluoroarene groups provide a convenient handle for incorporation of different functional thiols into the polymer backbone via organocatalytic nucleophilic aromatic substitution using silyl-protected thiols. This transformation proceeds under mild conditions can be performed in a single-pot immediately following polymerization or on purified substrates in a second step. In both cases, the transformation is typically complete within 5 minutes. Overall, the methodology presented herein enables a more convergent approach for development of functional high-performance materials.

Abstract:Bergman cyclization has shown great promise in constructing conjugated polymers. However, the application of this reaction in polymer science is still limited due to the harsh reaction condition and ill-defined structure of the achieved polymers. To this end, the cycloaromatization polymerization of enediynes catalyzed by a series of transition metal catalysts is investigated in this work, by taking advantage of the coordination chemistry of the enediyne with the transition metal complexes. According to the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), ultraviolet-visble (UV-Vis) spectroscopies and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analysis, the cycloaromatization polymerization of enediynes proceeds under milder conditions and in a more controlled manner in the presence of palladium(II) complexes, giving structurally regulated conjugated polymers in high yields.

Abstract:In this communication, we report an easy method for introducing functional groups into polymer structures by successively reacting two different activated ester functionalities (pentafluorophenyl (PFP) ester and azlactone (AZ)) with different functional amine compounds. By exploiting the difference in reactivity of the two activated esters (PFP and AZ) toward different amino compounds, we demonstrate, for the first time, a selective modification of the different activated ester groups, thereby introducing functional groups to the polymer backbone in a controlled manner. Statistical and block copolymers of vinyl dimethyl azlactone (VDM) and pentafluorophenyl acrylate (PFPA), i.e.,(p(VDM-stat-PFPA)) and (p(VDM-block-PFPA)), were prepared using reversible addition-fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization and subsequently modified using a library of amino compounds, yielding macromolecules with bespoke functionality. In additional work, the functional macromolecules were self-assembled into nanoparticles.
