Abstract:Efficient synthesis of poly(enamine)s has been a great challenge because of their poor stability, poor solubility, and low molecular weights. In this work, a spontaneous amino-yne click polymerization for the efficient preparation of poly(enamine)s was established, which could proceed with 100% atom efficiency under very mild conditions without any external catalyst. Through systematic optimization of the reaction conditions, several soluble and thermally stable poly(β-aminoacrylate)s with high molecular weights (Mw up to 64400) and well-defined structures were obtained in excellent yields (up to 99%). Moreover, the polymerization can perform in a regio- and stereospecific fashion. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectra analysis revealed that solely anti-Markovnikov additive products with 100% E-isomer were obtained. The reaction mechanism was well demonstrated with the assistance of density functional theory calculations. In addition, by introducing the tetraphenylethene moiety, the resulting polymers exhibit unique aggregation-induced emission characteristics and could be applied in explosives detection and bioimaging. This polyhydroamination is a new type of click polymerization and opens up enormous opportunities for preparing functional polymeric materials.

Abstract:The protecting-group-free synthesis of reactive functional group containing poly(ester amide)s (PEAs) is reported. The synthesis of the PEAs is based on the nucleophilic ring-opening polyaddition of terephthalaziridine (TP-Az) with comonomers baring carboxylic acid and phenols as nucleophiles. The comonomers also contained the reactive functional groups aldehyde, ketone, ester, alcohol, furan, disulfide and siloxane, which were incorporated into the resulting PEAs without any detectable side reactions. A multicomponent polymerization was conducted to further demonstrate the versatility of this method. These PEAs are amorphous with high thermal stability (T d,5 % : 231–324 °C) and a have wide range of glass transition temperatures (T g ) (32–142 °C). The disulfide and siloxane-containing copolymers PEAs selectively degrade in the presence of dithiothreitol and fluoride respectively. The PEAs also underwent alkaline hydrolysis to yield a potential TP-Az, potentially facilitating chemical recycling of these PEAs.

Abstract:Two disubstituted acetylenes bearing a vinyl group at one end (M1 and M2) were synthesized and polymerized by WCl6-Ph4Sn catalyst. The expected poly(disubstituted acetylenes) PDSAs (P1 and P2) were obtained in high yields. Both P1 and P2 have reactive vinyl groups on their side chains, thus they were used as precursors to be subsequently modified with a mercapto compound through the thiol-ene click reaction to produce the novel PDSAs (P1S and P2S) in good yield. The chemical structures of the polymers were carefully characterized by standard spectroscopic methods such as gel permeation chromatography (GPC), NMR, NMR and FTIR techniques, and satisfactory data were collected. The post-polymerization modification of P1 took a long reaction time (3 days) to convert P1 to P1S because the ene-functionality at the end of side chain of P1 links to a saturated alkyl segment. By using an activated ene-functionality (alpha,beta-unsaturated vinyl), the modification of P2 to P2S took only 1 day under mild conditions. Moreover, the activated end-ene group allowed the post-polymerization modification of P2 by Michael addition, which was confirmed using butylamine as the representative amine compound and the characterization data indicated the validity of the expected P2N. The thermal analysis results indicated that the modified polymers were highly stable thermally with a decomposition temperature over at least 240 degrees C, except for P2N, which showed lower stability due to unstable imine groups. Meanwhile, it was found that the modified polymers P1S and P2S were fluorescent and showed similar emission efficiency to their precursors P1 and P2. These results indicated that the thiol-ene click reaction and Michael addition reaction are accessible routes for post-polymerization modification to generate novel functional PDSAs.

Abstract:In the field of polymer chemistry, tremendous efforts have been made over the last decade to replace petrochemical monomers with building blocks from renewable resources. In this respect, itaconic acid has been used as an alternative to acrylic acid or maleic acid in unsaturated polyesters for thermal or UV-curing applications. However, examples of poly(ester amide)s from itaconic acid are scarce. Under standard polycondensation reactions, the presence of free amines leads to aza-Michael addition reactions at the α,β-unsaturated double bond of the itaconic acid and isomerization reactions to mesaconic acid. Both reactions make the resulting materials useless as UV-curing polymer resins. To avoid these undesired side reactions, we herein report the use of preformed, well-defined diols containing internal amide bonds. The resulting unsaturated poly(ester amide) resins were analyzed before and after UV-induced crosslinking. Viscosity measurements revealed a strong thixotropic behavior induced by the amide groups, which is usually not detected in structurally similar polyester resins.

Abstract:We report a new synthetic strategy to derive functional poly(disubstituted acetylenes) (PDSAs) through "phenol-yne click reaction". The phenol-containing PDSA was prepared by the polymerization of the triisopropylsilane (TIPS)-protected 4-((4- fluorophenyl) ethynyl) phenol monomer and by a subsequent deprotection step. Then, different functional groups (e. g., ester and amide) were grafted onto the PDSA side chains via the highly efficient "phenol-yne click reaction". Thepost-polymerization modification was carried out under mild conditions (at 40 degrees C, in common solvent) under an air atmosphere for a short time (4 h).The structures of the products were well characterized by GPC, NMR, and FTIR techniques and satisfactory data were collected. The data indicated that the phenol groups on the precursor PDSA were highly active to react with activated acetylenic compounds bearing functional groups intolerable to direct polymerization. This is the first example of the preparation of phenol-containing PDSA and the use of it as a precursor to prepare functional PDSAs. Besides the activated ester, thiol-ene click reaction, Michael addition reaction and Cu(I) catalysed alkyne-azide click reaction, we added a new tool in the tool-box for the synthesis of functional polymers.

Abstract:Water is an abundant, natural, and sustainable resource. However, it has not been used as a monomer for the construction of polymers. In this paper, we take this challenge and develop a new polymerization of water and triple-bond based monomers of isocyanides and bromoalkynes, and polyamides with high molecular weights (up to 41 700) and stereoregularities (the fraction of Z-isomer generally higher than 80%) are obtained in excellent yields (up to 98.1%) under mild reaction conditions. The polymers possess good solubility and exhibit high thermal stability and refractive index. The tetraphenylethene-containing polymers show the unique aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE) characteristics. Moreover, thanks to their containing bromoacrylamide groups in the main chains, these polyamides could be easily easily postmodified through different reactions, providing a convenient platform for polymer functionalization. Thus, this work not only established a stereoselective polymerization of water and triple-bond based monomers but also provided a powerful strategy for the preparation of functional polyamides under mild reaction conditions.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Four kinds of functional polyethylene carrying thioester pendants were synthesized via ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of alkyl cyclopent‐3‐enecarbothioate catalyzed by a ruthenium‐based commercial catalyst and subsequent hydrogenation of the ROMP products (alkyl = ethyl, n ‐butyl, n ‐octyl, or n ‐dodecyl). In these polymers the pendant alkyl thioester groups are precisely distributed along the backbone on every five methylene carbons. Chain structure, molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the polymers were characterized by 1 H and 13 C NMR, and GPC. The ROMP reactions all reached high monomer conversions, and hydrogenation of the ROMP products were exhaustive. Thermal transitions and side chain crystallization behaviors of the polymer were investigated and characterized by DSC and TGA. Glass transition temperature and melting temperature of these polymers were higher than the counterparts containing ester pendants. TGA analysis indicated that all the thioester‐containing polymers exhibited moderate thermal stability, and the sulfur‐containing polymers show slightly lower thermal stability than their counterparts without sulfur. The new family of functionalized polyethylenes could be used as models of ethylene‐thioacrylate copolymers, and find applications as novel functional materials. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Abstract:A reversible reaction between linear‐polyethyleneimine and various aldehydes is reported. A variety of new polyaminals are prepared. The formation is a pH‐dependent and reversible as aldehydes can undergo controlled release. The findings indicate that the dynamic aminal exchange reaction has great potential as a new methodology for constructing dynamic polymer networks. The study of dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC) is growing rapidly in polymer chemistry. The dynamic covalent chemistry of polyaminals formed by the reaction of linear polyethyleneimine (L‐PEI) with various functional aldehydes is explored. The study demonstrates the pH‐dependent kinetics of polyaminal formation and the versatility of polyaminals in controlling the release of aldehydes under ambient conditions. Additionally, the controlled temperature‐induced release of aldehydes and the dynamic shuffling behavior of aminals in polymer systems are investigated, emphasizing the potential for dynamic, covalently bonded polymers through dynamic aminal chemistry. The research showed the dynamic covalent aminal exchange for creating a range of new polymer materials.

A Facile Method to Synthesize Semicrystalline Poly(ester amide)s from 2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid, 1,10-Decanediol, and Crystallizable Amido Diols

Abstract:The synthesis of polyamides and poly(ester amide)s derived from 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid frequently leads to amorphous polymeric materials. Formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds between the oxygen heteroatom in the furan ring and hydrogens of the amide bonds reduces the intermolecular hydrogen bonds that are usually responsible for the high thermal and mechanical performance of these materials. To circumvent this problem, aliphatic–aromatic poly(ester amide)s were synthesized in this study from dimethyl 2,5-furandicarboxylate, 1,10-decanediol, and a preformed aliphatic diol containing two internal amide bonds (amido diol). Wide-angle X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry experiments revealed that polymers obtained were semicrystalline over the whole composition range and crystallized rapidly from the molten state, indicating that intramolecular H-bonding is effectively suppressed. Depending on the ratio of 1,10-decanediol and amido diol, the thermal properties could be adjusted over a wide temperature range. The polymers exhibit Tg and Tm in a range of −4 to 27 °C and 102 to 175 °C, respectively. Elastic modulus and hardness increased almost linearly with the amount of ester–amide moieties. The method presented herein allows for the successful synthesis of semicrystalline poly(ester amide)s from 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid without undesired intramolecular hydrogen bonds. Abstract:Robust methodologies for polymer post-synthesis functionalization enable preparation of new high-performance material scaffolds with uniquely tailored properties. Here, we demonstrate that polycarbonates containing pendant fluoroarene groups provide a convenient handle for incorporation of different functional thiols into the polymer backbone via organocatalytic nucleophilic aromatic substitution using silyl-protected thiols. This transformation proceeds under mild conditions can be performed in a single-pot immediately following polymerization or on purified substrates in a second step. In both cases, the transformation is typically complete within 5 minutes. Overall, the methodology presented herein enables a more convergent approach for development of functional high-performance materials.

Abstract:A novel metal-free and protecting-group-free synthesis method to prepare telechelic thiol-functionalized polyesters is developed by employing organocatalysis. A scope of Brønsted acids, including trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (1), HCl.Et2O (2), diphenyl phosphate (3), γ-resorcylic acid (4) and methanesulfonic acid (5), are evaluated to promote ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone with unprotected 6-mercapto-1-hexanol as the multifunctional initiator. Among them, diphenyl phosphate (3) exhibits great chemoselectivity and efficiency, which allows for simply synthesis of thiol-terminated poly(ε-caprolactone) with near-quantitative thiol fidelity, full monomer conversion, controlled molecular weight and narrow polydispersity. Kinetic study confirms living/controlled nature of the organocatalyzed chemoselective polymerizations. Density functional theory calculation illustrates that the chemoselectivity of diphenyl phosphate (3) is attributed to the stronger bifunctional activation of monomer and initiator/chain-end as well as the lower energy in hydroxyl pathway than thiol one. Moreover, series of tailor-made telechelic thiol-terminated poly(δ-valerolactone) and block copolymers are efficiently generated under mild conditions.

Abstract:Post-polymerization modification is a facile and efficient method for the generation of diverse functional polymers. Herein, polymer-based molecular arrays were obtained by using sequential modification. First, periodic polyketone P0 was synthesized via acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization of α,ω-diene M0. Oxime chemistry was employed in the functionalization of the ketone moieties of P0 using three commercially available alkoxyamine hydrochlorides. Finally, electrophilic alkoxyetherification, a four-component reaction, was employed in the modification of alkene groups on polymer main chains using N-bromosuccinimide (NBS), tetrahydrofuran, and fluorinated carboxylic acid. Complete conversion of reactive sites was observed in both steps, and the two modification reactions exhibited excellent compatibility. The thermal properties of the polymers as thermal stability, and glass transition and melting behaviours were investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

Abstract:We report a facile method for the synthesis of multi-block copolymers consisting of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(ester-amide) segments with an ordered side group sequence via multicomponent polymerization based on the Passerini reaction (PR). The technique involves the polymer supported liquid-phase synthesis of three PEG diacid macromonomers (M1-M3) via stepwise PR with tert-butyl isocyanoacetate and a functional aldehyde followed by selective hydrolysis, and the final multicomponent polymerization of M1-M3 with phenylacetaldehyde and 1,6-diisocyanohexane.

Abstract:The thiolene radical addition reaction has been successfully used to synthesize polyphosphazene derivatives. Poly[bis(allylamino)phosphazene] with pendant allyl groups was reacted with different thiol reagents under UV irradiation. These thiol reagents include 1-pentanethiol, 3-mercaptopropionic acid, 3-mercapto-1,2-propane-diol, and 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-1-thio-beta-D-glucopyranose. 1H NMR analyses confirm that the allyl polyphosphazene can be quantitatively modified by the mercaptans. In total, 100% conversion of the allyl groups was reached in <60 min toward the first three mercaptans, whereas about 80% conversion of the allyl groups was reached after 120-min reaction toward the thioglucose. Abstract:The broad application of polyacrylamides (PAMs) has greatly promoted the development of new synthetic methods to prepare PAM-based functional (co)polymers regarding their traditional preparation via the direct polymerization of various acrylamide monomers. Herein, we have explored the post-polymerization modification of the poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl acrylate) (PTFEA) homopolymer, a typical non-activated ester, and various amines using the organo-catalytic system involving 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) and 1,2,4-triazole (TA). The reaction kinetics (e.g., the optimized reaction solvent, temperature, time, initial molar ratio of amines to esters and the molar ratio of DBU to TA) were carefully studied with the modulus substrate of iso-propylamine as the formed poly(iso-propyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) representing the most investigated PAM. The full and partial amidation of the esters in PTFEA could be precisely regulated just by controlling the kinetic conditions to give (co)polymers with designable compositions and structures. We have demonstrated that the poly(N-acryloyl pyrrolidine) obtained by the post-polymerization modification of non-activated ester and pyrrolidine exhibited a noticeable phase transition, which confirmed the robustness and versatility of the post-polymerization modification. The described method paves the way for the synthesis of various (co)polymers with amide side chains from readily available polymer precursors.

Abstract:We report the facile synthesis of sequence-defined, uniform oligo(ester-amide-ester)s, and periodic poly(ester-amide-ester)s composed of ɑ-hydroxy acids and ɑ-amino acids. The synthetic strategy for preparing the oligomers involves two sequential steps with bromoacetic acid and potassium isocyanoacetate as the key building blocks. (1) The first step is a nucleophilic substitution reaction between a bromoacetic ester and potassium isocyanoacetate to generate a new isocyanoacetic ester, (2) and the second is a Passerini reaction of the formed isocyanoacetic ester with an aldehyde and bromoacetic acid to form a longer bromoacetic ester with an ester-amide linkage and a side-group originating from the aldehyde. Repeating this cycle affords sequence-defined uniform oligo(ester-amide-ester)s with different side groups. This strategy efficiently provides uniform, symmetrical oligo(ester-amide-ester)s via an iterative approach. Furthermore, two strategies were examined to obtain sequence-defined periodic poly(ester-amide-ester)s through the polycondensation of different oligomers. The polycondensation based on the nucleophilic substitution of α,ω-bromo carboxylic acids as the oligomer was less effective, while the DIC/DPTS-mediated polycondensation of α,ω-hydroxy carboxylic acids as the sequence-defined oligomer was efficient enough to afford high-molecular-weight periodic poly(ester-amide-ester)s.
