Abstract:Objective: To observe the influence of traditional Chinese Baduanjin Qigong (Eight trigrams boxing) on fasting plasma glucose (FPG), postprandial 2-h blood glucose (2hPG) and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and to assess the clinical efficacy of this method. Methods: A total of 60 patients with T2DM were randomized into Baduanjin intervention group, walking aerobic exercise group, and education control group, 20 cases in each group. In education control group, western medicines were administered to control blood glucose to standard level, common education and nutritional recipes for diabetes mellitus were given, and original lifestyle was maintained. In Baduanjin intervention group, Baduanjin Qigong was initiated based on the treatment in education control group, 2 times daily, for 5 days weekly. In walking aerobic exercise group, walking was initiated based on the treatment in education control group, 2 times daily, 30 min at each time, for 5 days weekly. All groups were treated for 3 months, after which the changes of FPG, 2hPG and HbA1c levels before and after interventions were detected. Results: After 3-month interventions, 2hPG level decreased markedly in all groups than that before intervention (P<;0.05), which decreased more significantly in Baduanjin intervention group that that in other 2 groups (P<;0.05). Relative to education control group, Baduanjin intervention group was prominently lower in the levels of FPG and HbA1c (P<;0.05). Conclusion: Traditional Chinese Baduanjin Qigong can reduce the levels of FPG, 2hPG and HbA1c in patients with T2DM, thus deserving to be further studied and applied.
