Abstract:Lead free ceramics (K-0.5 Na0.5+x)NbO3 (0 <= x <= 0.3, KNN-x) were prepared by a novel method mixing perovskite structure of NaNbO3 and KNbO3 powders. Effects of Na excess and sintering temperatures on phase structure, microstructure and electrical properties of KNN ceramics were investigated. Result showed that the single phase perovskite structure was obtained in the KNN-0.1 ceramic sintered at 1070 degrees C, which also showed optimized ferroelectric property with P-r = 7.16 mC/cm(2) and E-c = 7.95 kV/cm. The KNN-x ceramic with x = 0.2 showed optimized piezoelectric property with d(33) = 116 pC/N because of the homogeneous dense microstructure.
Morphotropic Phase Boundary, Polymorphic Phases and Enhanced Electrostrain/piezoelectricity in Ag1-xKxNbO3 Solid-Solution Ceramics

Abstract:Ag1_xKxNbO3(AKNx (x <= 0.12) ceramics were prepared to understand the relationship of structure-properties driven by compositions and temperatures. The results suggested that this binary system possessed a morpho-tropic phase boundary (MPB) consisted of ferrielectric and ferroelectric phases with iso-symmetry at room temperature, in which domains switching together with electric-field-induced irreversible phase transition achieved a much higher electrostrain (Smax= 0.4%) than other compositions. But this MPB was destroyed after poling, leading to inferior piezoelectricity. A phase diagram was drawn after analyzing in situ XRD and dielectric data, where an almost vertical ferrielectric/antiferroelectric <-> polymorphic ferroelectric MPB line starting from a triple point was proposed. As temperature increased, the piezoelectricity significant enhanced near ferroelectric orthorhombic <-> monoclinic phase boundary, while the highest piezoelectricity was achieved near the mono-clinic <-> paraelectric phase boundary with d33 = 200 pC/N. The enhanced piezoelectricity is intimately related to the ferroelectric monoclinic possessing Pm symmetry.

Abstract:Lead-free 0.99(0.96K(0.46)Na(0.54)Nb(1-x)Ta(x)O(3)-0.04Bi(0.5)(Na0.82K0.18)(0.5)ZrO3)-0.01CaZrO(3) (0.99(0.96KNNTax-0.04BNZ)-0.01CZ) ceramics were prepared by a solid-state sintering method. Ta2O5 doped in the 0.99(0.96KNNTax-0.04BNZ)-0.01CZ ceramics results in a phase structure transition from the orthorhombic (O)/tetragonal (T) phase to the rhombohedral (R)/T phase. The Ta2O5 dopant induces a decrease in the average grain size from similar to 1.70 to similar to 0.69 mu m. At x = 0.02 and 0.04, the ceramics have a high reverse piezoelectric coefficient (similar to 500 pm/V under 25 kV/cm). The ceramics with x = 0.04 show an optimal level of unipolar strain, reaching 0.17% under 35 kV/cm at room temperature, and their field-induced strain varies <10% in the temperature range from 25 to 135 degrees C. The presence of the O phase in the polymorphic phase boundary (PPB) improves the temperature stability the reverse piezoelectric coefficient (d33*). Obtaining KNN-based ceramics with good piezoelectric properties and weak temperature sensitivity by designing a R/O/T phase boundary and controlling the average grain size to the submicrometer level is highly feasible.

Abstract:0.95 (Li0.04Na0.48K0.48)(Nb0.94Sb0.06)O-3-0.05(Ba0.5Ca0.5)(Zr0.5Hf0.5)O-3 (LNKNbS-BCZH) lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were prepared by the solid-state reaction method via the two-step sintering process. Via composition designing pure perovskite LNKNbS-BCZH ceramics are synthesized, which present complex coexistence of orthogonal and tetragonal ferroelectric phases in rhombohedral matrix and high densification depending greatly on the two-step sintering conditions. Due to the addition of some metal elements and the second component BCZH, there appear dielectric peak at Curie temperature T-c/T-m of similar to 200 degrees C and dielectric shoulder around room temperature, and the LNKNbS-BCZH ceramics approach to normal ferroelectrics with some diffused phase transition characteristic. Excellent ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity are obtained via composition designing and two-step sintering, in which the LNKNbS-BCZH ceramics sintered at 1180 degrees C for 45 min and 1050 degrees C for 8 h exhibit the largest piezoelectric constant of 232 pC/N, which can be increased further by room-temperature aging and re-poling. The safe working temperature for piezoelectric applications of the LNKNbS-BCZH ceramics should be below 100 degrees C. (C) 2019 Published by Elsevier B.V.
Effects of nano-sized BCZT on structure and electrical properties of KNN-based lead-free piezoceramics

Abstract:The (1 − x)(Li 0.03 Na 0.5 K 0.47 )(Nb 0.92 Sb 0.05 Ta 0.03 )O 3 –xBa 0.85 Ca 0.15 Zr 0.1 Ti 0.9 O 3 (LNKNST–BCZT, x = 0, 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, and 3.5%) lead-free piezoceramics were synthesized by the conventional solid-state reaction method with adding nano-sized Ba 0.85 Ca 0.15 Zr 0.1 Ti 0.9 O 3 (BCZT) powder to investigate their influences on crystal structure and electrical properties. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis reveals that all the sintered LNKNST–BCZT ceramics exhibit pure perovskite structure with the mainly rhombohedral (R) phase or the coexistence of rhombohedral (R) phase and tetragonal (T) phase. The composition of the LNKNST–1.5%BCZT ceramics locates around the critical point, i.e., the ceramics changing from the coexistence of rhombohedral (R) phase and tetragonal (T) phase to purely rhombohedral (R) phase, and presents the most densified microstructure morphology, which can be confirmed further by the field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) observation. There are two dielectric anomalies in the temperature dependent dielectric properties curves of the LNKNST–BCZT ceramics, which correlate with the ferroelectric rhombohedral (R) phase changing to the ferroelectric tetragonal (T) phase, and then to the paraelectric cubic (C) phase. Both the Curie–Weiss law and the power law fittings confirm the diffuse phase transition ferroelectrics characteristic of the LNKNST–1.5%BCZT ceramics, which is considered as correlating with the polar nanoregions (PNRs). Due to the densification effect caused by the chosen amount of nano-sized BCZT doping and the construction of R–T polymorphic phase boundary, the LNKNST–1.5%BCZT ceramics exhibit the best ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties. The complex impedance spectroscopy analysis confirms that the extrinsic electrical conduction mechanism at high temperatures is dominated by the oxygen vacancies induced by the evaporation of the alkali metals during sintering.
A high temperature stable piezoelectric strain of KNN-based ceramics

Abstract:Lead-free (1 - x)(0.96K(0.46)Na(0.54)Nb(0.98)Ta(0.02)O(3)-0.04Bi(0.5)(Na0.82K0.18) 0.5ZrO3)-xCaZrO(3) ((1 - x)(0.96KNNT-0.04BNKZ)-xCZ) piezoelectric ceramics were prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction method. The CaZrO3 dopant can induce a coexisting phase boundary with the transition from the orthorhombic/tetragonal phase to the R phase. Domains that exist across the grain boundary within neighboring grains appear in the ceramics with x = 0.01, which can result in an increase in ferroelectricity due to its long-range order organization. The CaZrO3 dopant results in the formation of polar nanodomains and induces the appearance of diffuse ferroelectrics. The ceramics with x = 0.01 show optimal piezoelectric properties (d(33) = 300 pC N-1 and d*(33) = 500 pm V-1 at 25 kV cm(-1)). Meanwhile, their high level of unipolar strain reaches up to 0.175% at 35 kV cm(-1) at room temperature, and their field-induced strain varies less than 10% from room temperature to 120 degrees C. The ceramics with x = 0.02 possess a remarkably high temperature stability of d*(33) (T-e = 200 degrees C). For x = 0.005-0.025, a higher amount of the CaZrO3 dopant can obviously improve the temperature stability of d*(33): The (1 - x)(0.96KNNT-0.04BNKZ)-xCZ system is a promising lead-free piezoelectric candidate material for commercial applications.
Intergranular Stress Induced Phase Transition in Cazro3 Modified Knn-Based Lead-Free Piezoelectrics

Abstract:The phase transition temperatures of CaZrO3‐doped (Na0.49K0.49Li0.02)(Nb0.8Ta0.2)O3 lead‐free piezoelectrics (LKNNT‐CZ5) have been studied with X‐ray diffraction and Raman scattering. It is found that LKNNT‐CZ5 ceramics and powders with the same crystallite size (~2–5 μm) exhibit distinctly different phase transition behaviors versus temperature. The ceramic bulk changes its orthorhombic phase to tetragonal structure abruptly after being pulverized to powders at room temperature(RT), and follows a phase transition sequence with increasing temperature: orthorhombic (RT–65°C), orthorhombic and tetragonal (65°C–105°C), and tetragonal phase (105°C to ~220°C). Contrastively, the powders hold a tetragonal structure without any phase transition within the whole temperature region (RT–220°C). These differences might be induced by the existing internal stress or residual strain, which could be released during the grinding process.
High Piezoelectric Performance of KNN-Based Ceramics over a Broad Temperature Range through Crystal Orientation and Multilayer Engineering

Abstract:Uninterrupted breakthroughs in the room temperature piezoelectric properties of KNN-based piezoceramics have been witnessed over the past two decades; however, poor temperature stability presents a major challenge for KNN-based piezoelectric ceramics in their effort to replace their lead-based counterparts. Herein, to enhance temperature stability in KNN-based ceramics while preserving the high piezoelectric response, multilayer composite ceramics were fabricated using textured thick films with distinct polymorphic phase transition temperatures. The results demonstrated that the composite ceramics exhibited both outstanding piezoelectric performance (d33~467 ± 16 pC/N; S~0.17% at 40 kV/cm) and excellent temperature stability with d33 and strain variations of 9.1% and 2.9%, respectively, over a broad temperature range of 25–180 °C. This superior piezoelectric temperature stability is attributed to the inter-inhibitive piezoelectric fluctuations between the component layers, the diffused phase transition, and the stable phase structure with a rising temperature, as well as the permanent contribution of crystal orientation to piezoelectric performance over the studied temperature range. This novel strategy, which addresses the piezoelectric and strain temperature sensitivity while maintaining high performance, is well-positioned to advance the commercial application of KNN-based lead-free piezoelectric ceramics.

Temperature-insensitive KNN-based Ceramics by Elevating O-T Phase Transition Temperature and Crystal Texture

Abstract:The inferior temperature stability of piezoelectric response is the main drawback of KNN-based ceramics. Here, the Ba-doped 0.97(K0.48Na0.52)(Nb0.96Sb0.04)O3-0.03Bax(Bi0.5Ag0.5)1-xZrO3 (abbreviated as KNNS-BxBAZ) textured ceramics were prepared by the template grain growth (TGG) method. Excellent comprehensive properties (d33=(406 ± 15) pC/N, TC = 274 °C, strain is 0.17%) were achieved in KNNS-BxBAZ textured ceramics with x = 0.2. Meanwhile, its piezoelectric and strain properties also show superior temperature stability (d33 maintained within ±20% change in a wide temperature range from 25 °C to 200 °C and strain variation was less than 5% in the temperature range from room temperature to 165 °C). The high O-T phase transition temperature (TO-T is 110 °C) induced by incorporating Ba ions accounts for the enhanced temperature stability of piezoelectric properties. In addition, the crystal texture always maintains the contribution of piezoelectric anisotropy to the piezoelectric properties during elevated temperature, which significantly improved the temperature stability of piezoelectric properties. This work provides an effective strategy for simultaneously achieving high piezoelectric response and excellent temperature stability in KNN-based ceramics.

Abstract:New (1–x)K0.48Na0.52NbO3–xBi(Zn0.5Zr0.5)O3 [(1–x)KNN–xBZZ] lead-free piezoceramics were prepared by the conventional solid state method. Effects of BZZ content on their phase structure, microstructure, and electrical properties were studied. As the BZZ content increases, both TO–T and TC gradually decrease, the dielectric constant increases and the dielectric loss almost decreases. The ceramic with x = 0.0075 has enhanced ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties (e.g., d33 ∼ 156 pC/N, kp ∼ 0.44, Pr ∼ 27.5 μC/cm2, and Ec ∼ 11.2 kV/cm). The underlying physical mechanism for enhanced electrical properties has been given. As a result, adding BZZ is an effective way to enhance the piezoelectric properties of KNN ceramics.
Crystallographic Texture and Phase Structure Induced Excellent Piezoelectric Performance in KNN‐based Ceramics

Abstract:It is difficult to maintain strong piezoelectric properties over a wide temperature range in (K,Na)NbO3 (KNN)-based ceramics owing to the polymorphic phase boundary (PPB). Here, we propose advantageously utilizing the synergistic effect of crystal orientation and phase structure to address this issue. The < 0 0 1 & rang;(pc) textured (1 - x)(K0.48Na0.52)(Nb0.96Sb0.04)O-3-x(Bi0.5Ag0.5)ZrO3 (KNNS-xBAZ) ceramics with different phase structures were synthesized via the templated grain growth method. A high piezoelectric coefficient (d(33)) of 505 +/- 25 pC/N, an electric field-induced strain of 0.21%, and a superior temperature stability (d(33) exhibited a high retention of >= 78% at the temperature up to 200 degrees C; strain maintained within 5.7% change over a temperature range of 30-150 degrees C) were simultaneously achieved in textured KNNS-0.03BAZ ceramics. The flattened Gibbs free energy induced by the R-O-T multiphase coexistence, the strong anisotropy of crystals, and the abundant nanodomains contributed to the enhanced piezoelectric properties. The contribution of the strong anisotropy of crystals in < 0 0 1 & rang;(pc) textured ceramics compensates for the deterioration of the piezoelectric properties caused by the phase structure deviation from the PPB with increasing temperature, which benefits the superior temperature stability of the textured KNNS-0.03BAZ ceramics. The previous merits prove that utilizing the synergistic effect of crystal orientation and phase structure is an effective strategy to boost the piezoelectricity and their temperature stability of KNN-based ceramics.

Abstract:Considering the advantages of high Curie temperature and environment-friendly nature of KNN piezoelectric ceramics, the limitation of weak piezoelectric response and their temperature sensitivity to applications is worth exploring. Herein, the <001> textured (1-[Formula: see text])(K[Formula: see text]Na[Formula: see text])(Nb[Formula: see text]Sb[Formula: see text])O3-[Formula: see text](Bi[Formula: see text]Na[Formula: see text])HfO3([Formula: see text] = 0.01−0.045) lead-free ceramics were synthesized by templated grain-growth method. The high piezoelectric performance (d[Formula: see text] of 474 pC/N and strain of 0.21%) and excellent temperature stability (unipolar strain maintained within 4.3% change between 30[Formula: see text]C and 165[Formula: see text]C) were simultaneously achieved in the textured KNNS-0.03BNH ceramics. The high piezoelectric performance can be attributed to the summation of the crystallographic anisotropy and phase structure contributions in <001> textured ceramics. The superior temperature stability of piezoelectric properties can be interpreted by the contribution of crystal anisotropy to piezoelectric properties reduces the effect of phase transition on piezoelectric properties deterioration. This study provides an effective strategy for simultaneously achieving high piezoelectric properties and superior temperature stability in KNN-based textured ceramics.
Defect engineering on phase structure and temperature stability of KNN‐based ceramics sintered in different atmospheres

Abstract:Lead-free MnO-doped 0.955K(0.5)Na(0.5)NbO(3)-0.045Bi(0.5)Na(0.5)ZrO(3) (Abbreviated as KNN-0.045BNZ) ceramics have been prepared by the conventional solid-state sintering method in reducing atmosphere (po2=1x10(-10)atm) and air. For ceramics sintered in reducing atmosphere, only Mn2+ ions exist in ceramics who preferentially occupy the cation vacancies in A-site at x=0.2-0.4, whereas Mn2+ ions substitute for Zr4+ ions in B-site to form defects (MnZr) at x>0.4. For ceramics sintered in air, mixed Mn2+, Mn3+, and Mn4+ ions coexist here. The Mn2+ ions preferentially occupy the cation vacancies in A-site at x=0.2-0.4 and then Mn2+ ions substitute for Zr4+ ions in B-site at x>0.4. Meanwhile, the Mn3+ ions and Mn4+ ions substitute for Nb5+ ions in B-site to form defects at x=0.2-0.8. The , and dipolar defects show a positive dipolar defect contribution (DDC) to the whereas the dipolar defects show a negative DDC to the . The dipolar defects and can help improve the temperature stability of . The 0.4% MnO-doped KNN-0.045BNZ ceramics sintered in reducing atmosphere show excellent piezoelectric constant d(33)=300pC/N and 0.2% MnO-doped KNN-0.045BNZ ceramics sintered in air possess optimal piezoelectric constant d(33)=290pC/N.
Simultaneous Enhancement of Piezoelectricity and Temperature Stability in KNN‐Based Lead‐Free Ceramics Via Layered Distribution of Dopants

Abstract:KNN‐based lead‐free ceramics exhibit simultaneously an outstanding d33 and temperature stability in the range of 25–150 °C by introducing a layered distribution of key dopants in a monolithic ceramic with stepwise varied polymeric phase transition (PPT) temperatures along the thickness direction. These are attributed to the construction of spatially diffused PPTs in combination with the Maxwell–Wagner effect and intergranular stress. The past two decades have seen a great enhancement of piezoelectric coefficients (d33) to higher than 570 pC/N in (K, Na)NbO3 (KNN) piezoelectrics, but one notoriously unresolved issue is their severe temperature instability, obstructing them toward practical applications. The present work demonstrates a facile approach to overcome this problem by introducing a layered distribution of key dopants (Li and Sb) in a monolithic ceramic, featuring stepwise varied polymorphic phase transition (PPT) temperatures along the thickness direction. The dopant‐graded ceramic exhibits an outstanding d33 of 508 pC/N and a very large piezoelectric strain (Suni, of 0.18%). More importantly, an excellent temperature stability (d33 variation within 13% over the temperature range of 25–150 °C) is achieved, which is superior to that of most state‐of‐art KNN counterparts. These are attributed to the construction of spatially diffused PPT in combination with enhanced polarization, permittivity, and piezoresponse through interfacial effect, including the Maxwell–Wagner effect and intergranular stress by gradient doping. The results offer an alternative strategy for designing high‐performance piezoelectric materials with desirable temperature reliability.

Abstract:The piezoelectric and electromechanical coupling coefficients in conjunction with their temperature stability are the crucial figure-of-merits of piezoelectric materials, due to these properties determine their response sensitivity and operating temperature range, respectively for practical applications. In this work, Sb, (Bi0.5Na0.5)ZrO3, and (Bi0.5K0.5)HfO3 were used to regulate phase transition of KNN-based ceramics, and resultant large piezoelectric constants d33 ∼ 430 ± 10 pC/N, unipolar strain Suni ∼ 0.18% at 40 kV/cm, and a high planar electromechanical coupling factor kp ∼ 55% were observed in the composition with rhombohedral-orthorhombic-tetragonal (R-O-T) multiphase coexistence. Ex-situ electric field XRD measurement and TEM observation indicate the outstanding piezoelectric properties are originated from the electric field-induced phase transition, nanodomains and polar nanoregions, which lower polarization anisotropy and facilitate polarization rotation between different crystallographic symmetries. In addition, the piezoelectric properties of the samples with R-O-T phases coexistence show superior temperature stability and fatigue resistance after 106 bipolar electric cycles. The present study not only helps to understand the structural origin of high piezoresponse, but also lays a foundation for the applications of KNN-based ceramics.

Abstract:Piezoelectric strain and its temperature stability of KNN-based ceramics sintered in reducing atmosphere are improved simultaneously via defects design of Mn doping. MnO and MnO2 as raw materials have an impact on defects in KNN-based ceramics. When the dopant changes from MnO to MnO2, the defects (Mn-Nb ''', Mn-K(center dot), Mn-Na(center dot)) concentration decrease and defects (Mn-Nb') increase. Defect dipoles (Mn-K(center dot)-V-K', Mn-Na(center dot)-V-Na', Mn-Nb '''-V-o(center dot center dot)) in poled and aged 0.94 K0.48Na0.52Nb0.96Ta0.04O3-0.06BaZrO3 + 0.08MnO ceramics form a strong restoring force for domain switching, which enhances the reversibility of the non-180. domains switching and then significantly improves piezoelectric strain. The stable defect dipoles ( Mn-K(center dot)-V-K', Mn-Na(center dot)-V-Na') form so that the reversibility of the non-180. domains switching can be preserved to high temperature. This defect dipoles design provides a general method to achieve large piezoelectric strain (582 pm/V@20 kV/cm) and excellent temperature stability (T-90 =210 degrees C).

Abstract:KNN-based ceramics have gained considerable attention due to their excellent performances, cost-effectiveness, and potential applications in transducers. In order to accelerate the piezoelectric performances and temperature reliability of KNN-based ceramics, (1 − x )(K 0.48 Na 0.52 )(Nb 0.955 Sb 0.045 )O 3 − x (Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 )HfO 3 (abbreviated as KNNS- x BNH) ceramics were prepared. The study focused on investigating the impact of BNH components on their morphology, structure, piezoelectric performances, and temperature reliability of ceramics. This route is crucial for improving the overall performance of KNN-based ceramics. The synthetic piezoelectric ceramics have a typical perovskite structure, in which the optimized ceramic with x = 0.035 shows excellent piezoelectric properties: d 33 = 436 pC/N, k p = 0.56, d 33 * = 604 pm/V, T c = 253 °C, P r = 14.75 μC/cm 2 , E c = 957 V/mm, and S max = 0.18%. The co-occurrence of orthorhombic–tetragonal (O–T) phase, relaxation states, and their nanodomain structures contribute significantly to the excellent performance of ceramics with T Fs < 0.8‰ and T εr < 17‰. At the same time, it is verified that the presence of B-site defect dipoles in ceramics has an inactive effect on spontaneous polarization, which is evident in the decrease of d 33 * measured after polarization.

Abstract:Lead-free 0.955K0.5Na0.5NbO3-0.045Bi0.5Na0.5ZrO3 + 0.6%MnO (KNN-0.045BNZ + Mn0.6) ceramics have been prepared by a conventional solid-state sintering method in air. All the samples sintered at different temperatures possess a coexisting phase boundary (CPB) between rhombohedral (R) phase and tetragonal (T) phase. The increase of sintering temperature (Ts) increases the phase fraction of T phase in CPB region. Mn2+, Mn3+ and Mn4+ ions coexist in all the KNN-0.045BNZ + Mn0.6 ceramics sintered at 1110 °C to 1190 °C. High sintering temperature can induce a transformation from MnNb'' defects to MnNb' defects. The samples with fine grain show stable octahedral structure. The KNN-0.045BNZ + Mn0.6 ceramics with fine grain possess excellent temperature stability of d33* due to the wide phase transition region. The increase of sintering temperature induces the (R-T) phase transition temperature to move to room temperature.

Abstract:Although KNN‐based ceramics with high electrical properties are obtained through a variety of strategies, the temperature sensitivity is still one of the key technical bottlenecks hindering practical applications. Here, we use a new strategy, meticulously tailoring phase boundary, to refine the ferroelectric boundary of KNN‐based ceramics, leading to a high piezoelectricity companied with improving temperature stability. The highest d33 value in this system reaches 501 pC/N with a TC ∼240°C, while a large strain ∼0.134% can be kept with 10% lower deterioration until 100°C. The origin of high piezoelectricity is mainly attributed to the well‐preserved multiphase coexistence (MPC) and the appearance of nanodomains, which greatly facilitate the polarization rotation. Instead of the changed intrinsic thermal insensitivity, the precision phase boundary engineering plays an important role in strengthening temperature stability of electric‐induced strain. This work provides a simple and effective method to obtain both high electrical properties and excellent thermal stability in KNN‐based ceramics, which is expected to promote the practical applications in the future.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:In this paper, (K0.5Na0.53)0.932Nb0.932O3-0.008BF-0.06LS (abbreviated as KNN-BF-LS) piezoelectric ceramic was prepared by sol-gel method. Structure and properties of ceramics were analyzed.Through analysis of the results, when sintering temperature is 1080°C, ceramic has good perovskite structure. At this temperature, grain size is more uniform, and structure is the most dense. Piezoelectric constant d33, electromechanical coupling coefficient Kp, dielectric constant εr reached the maximum value, respectively, 113pC/N, 0.33, 591. Dielectric loss tanδ reached the minimum 0.11.
