Abstract:Supramolecular chirality arising from periodic asymmetrical packings of building units plays a significant role in development of smart chiral materials, but the thorough mechanism of chirality control on self-assembly has seldom been understood. Here, three isomeric amphiphiles p/m/o-Py-BL (para/meta/ortho-pyridine-appended betulin) were synthesized from a natural pentacyclic triterpenoid. The presence or absence of supramolecular chirality of assembled p/m/o-Py-BL was regulated by isomeric effects, determined by conformation and strength of intramolecular H-bonds. The helical topologic transformation and chiroptical activity transitions modulated by Ag+ were also reported, ascribed to the transformed conformation of building units, converting a network of chiral nanofibers into helical nanoribbons. In addition, the helical nanoribbons of p-Py-BL/Ag+ were capable of in situ synthesis of Ag nanoparticles with plasmonic chirality. These findings provided a blueprint for regulating supramolecular handedness by isomerism and metal ions, affording a deeper understanding on chiral self-assembly processes and facilitating the applications of triterpenoid-based assemblies in chiral nanomaterials.

Construction of Chiroptical Switch on Silica Nanoparticle Surface via Chiral Self-assembly of Side-chain Azobenzene-containing Polymer

Abstract:In this contribution, we utilized surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) to prepare organic-inorganic hybrid core/shell silica nanoparticles (NPs), where silica particles acted as cores and polymeric shells (PAzoMA*) were attached to silica particles via covalent bond. Subsequently, chiroptical switch was successfully constructed on silica NPs surface taking advantage of supramolecular chiral self-assembly of the grafted side-chain Azo-containing polymer (PAzoMA*). We found that the supramolecular chirality was highly dependent on the molecular weight of grafted PAzoMA*. Meanwhile, the supramolecular chirality could be regulated using 365 nm UV light irradiation and heating-cooling treatment, and a reversible supramolecular chiroptical switch could be repeated for over five cycles on silica NPs surface. Moreover, when heated above the glass transition temperature (Tg) of PAzoMA*, the organic-inorganic hybrid nanoparticles (SiO2@PAzoMA* NPs) still exhibited intense DRCD signals. Interestingly, the supramolecular chirality could be retained in solid film for more than 3 months. To conclude, we have prepared an organic-inorganic hybrid core/shell chiral silica nanomaterial with dynamic reversible chirality, thermal stability and chiral storage functions, providing potential applications in dynamic asymmetric catalysis, chiral separation and so on.

Chirality Amplification Over the Morphology Control of the Rod-Coil Molecules with Lateral Methyl Groups

Abstract:In the context of sustainable development, research regarding chirality has aroused enormous attention. Concurrently, chiral self-assembly is one of the most important subjects in supramolecular research, which can broaden the applications of chiral materials. This study focuses on the morphology control of amphiphilic rod-coil molecules composed of the rigid hexaphenyl unit and flexible oligoethylene and butoxy groups containing lateral methyl groups, carried out using an enantioseparation application. The methyl side chain being located on different blocks influences the driving force through steric hindrance, which determines the direction and degree of tilted packing during the π-π stacking of the self-assembly process. Interestingly, the amphiphilic rod-coil molecules aggregated into long helical nano-fibers, which further hierarchically aggregated into nano-sheets or nano-tubes upon increasing the concentration of the THF/H<sub>2</sub>O solution. In particular, the hierarchical-chiral assembly effectively amplified the chirality and was validated by the strong Cotton signals; playing a vital role in the enantioselective nucleophilic substitution reaction. These results provide new insights into the applications of chiral self-assemblies and soft chiral materials.

Abstract:Self-assembly is one of the most important issues of fabricating materials with precise chiral nanostructures. Herein, we constructed a chiral assembly system from amphiphiles containing hydrophobic/hydrophilic chiral coils bonded to hexabiphenyl, exhibiting controllable enantioselectivity over various aggregation behaviors. The chiral coils aroused various steric hindrances affecting intrinsic stacking tendency and compactness, leading to different aggregating behaviors, as concluded from the self-assembly investigation. The strong π-π stacking interaction between the long hexabiphenyl groups gave rise to a relatively compact arrangement in the aqueous solution, whereas the methyl side groups on the coil segments raised steric hindrance at the rigid-flexible interface, resulting in loose stacking and formation of nanostructures with a larger curvature. Compared with the achiral molecule 1 that formed micron-sized large sheets, molecules 2-4 containing chiral coils aggregated into nanodishes, which looked exactly like mosquito-repellent incense, to overcome surface tension. The helical structures effectively amplified chirality and exhibited strong circular dichroism (CD) signals, which indicate enantioselectivity. In addition, the relatively loose packing behavior permitted their co-assembly with a dye and aided efficient energy transfer, providing a foundation for the chiral application of supramolecules. Thus, by introducing a simple methyl side group in amphiphilic molecules, asymmetric synthesis and energy transfer efficiency can be realized.

Abstract:Herein, one-dimensional double helix is fabricated via supramolecular self-assembly of a sugar-based amphiphile, which can be utilized as soft template to synthesize silica double helices and nanotubes through sol−gel reaction of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The self-assembled double helix can be rationally transformed into nonhelical fibers with the aid of conventional ionic surfactants. It is suggested that the introduction of ionic surfactant will impart electrostatic repulsion inside double helix and shape double helices into nanofibers. Interestingly the nonhelical fibers coassembled by C4AG and cationic surfactants have been proven to direct the preparation of single-stranded helical SiO2 through sol−gel polycondensation. This is the first time that both double and single-stranded silica helix have been created in one system.
Spontaneously Amplified Homochiral Organic-Inorganic Nano-Helix Complexes Via Self-Proliferation

Abstract:Most spiral coiled biomaterials in nature, such as gastropod shells, are homochiral, and the favoured chiral feature can be precisely inherited. This inspired us that selected material structures, including chirality, could be specifically replicated into the self-similar populations; however, a physicochemical understanding of the material-based heritage is unknown. We study the homochirality by using calcium phosphate mineralization in the presence of racemic amphiphilic molecules and biological protein. The organic-inorganic hybrid materials with spiral coiling characteristics are produced at the nanoscale. The resulted helixes are chiral with the left-and right-handed characteristics, which are agglomerated hierarchically to from clusters and networks. It is interesting that each cluster or network is homochiral so that the enantiomorphs can be separated readily. Actually, each homochiral architecture is evolved from an original chiral helix, demonstrating the heritage of the matrix chirality during the material proliferation under a racemic condition. By using the Ginzburg-Landaue expression we find that the chiral recognition in the organic-inorganic hybrid formation may be determined by a spontaneous chiral separation and immobilization of asymmetric amphiphilic molecules on the mineral surface, which transferred the structural information from the mother matrix to the descendants by an energetic control. This study shows how biomolecules guide the selective amplification of chiral materials via spontaneous self-replication. Such a strategy can be applied generally in the design and production of artificial materials with self-similar structure characteristics.
Chirality induction to porphyrin derivatives co-confined at the air-water interface with silica nano-helices: towards enantioselective thin solid film surfaces

Abstract:A supramolecular approach based on self-assembled structures allows the formation of large structured co-assemblies based on chiral and achiral compounds with original physicochemical features. In this contribution, an achiral and hydrophobic porphyrin was co-assembled at the air-water interface with mesoscopic silica nano-helices dispersed in the water subphase of a Langmuir trough without covalent bond formation. This procedure allowed transferring the porphyrin/nano-helix co-assemblies on a solid support within a thin hybrid layer. The interaction between the two species was characterized using spectroscopic techniques and atomic force microscopy. As evidenced by the circular dichroism measurements performed directly on solid films, tunable chirality was induced to the porphyrin aggregates according to the chirality of the silica nano-helices. When the co-assemblies were transferred on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) slides and exposed to aqueous solutions of histidine enantiomers, selective chiral discrimination was observed which was determined by the matching/mismatching between the chirality of the analyte and the helicity of the nano-helical structure.

Abstract:While manipulating the helicity of nanostructures is a challenging task, it attracts great research interest on account of its crucial role in better understanding the formation mechanisms of helical systems. For the supramolecular chirality in self-assembly systems, one challenge is how to understand the origin of supramolecular chirality and inherent helicity information on nanostructures regulated by functionality-oriented stacking modes (such as J- and H-aggregation) of building blocks. Herein, two-component hydrogels were prepared by phenylalanine-based enantiomers and achiral bis(pyridinyl) derivatives, where helical nanofibers with inverse handedness as well as controllable helical pitch and diameter were readily obtained through stoichiometric coassembly of these building blocks. The helix inversion was achieved by the transition between the J- and H-aggregation of bis(pyridinyl) derivatives, which was collectively confirmed by circular dichroism, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and single X-ray crystallography. Interestingly, the helical coassemblies with opposite handedness could be obtained not only from the enantiomeric building blocks but also from the chiral monomers with the same configurational chirality by exchanging achiral additives. This work provides insight into the origin and helicity inversion of supramolecular chirality in molecular self-assembly systems and may shine light on the precise fabrication of chiral nanostructures for potential applications in smart display devices, optoelectronics, and biological systems.

Abstract:Biological homochirality is a signature of life. Supramolecular polymerization is effective to achieve high hierarchical homochirality in nature, but has not been well-explored. Herein, we report regioselective and homochiral supramolecular polymerization of chiral nanotadpole aggregates made of either synthetic helical poly(phenylacetylene)s or chirality-amplified co-assembly of chiral and achiral poly(phenylacetylene)s. The twisted nanotadpole aggregates with high screw-sense preference polymerized as monomers (aggremers) into supramolecular chains in a head-to-tail regioselective and stepwise manner. Supramolecular copolymerization of enantiomeric aggremers favored formation of homochiral hierarchical supramolecular structures as visualized by TEM. Chiral hexagonal columnar mesophase of aggremers was responsive for the stereoselectivity. The work opens a gate to controllably and effectively construct functional chiral supramolecular materials and deepens the understanding of hierarchical biological homochirality.

Electrostatic and Aromatic Interaction-Directed Supramolecular Self-Assembly of a Designed Fmoc-Tripeptide into Helical Nanoribbons

Abstract:Supramolecular self-assembly offers an efficient pathway for creating macroscopically chiral structures in biology and materials science. Here, a new peptide consisting of an N-(9-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl) headgroup connected to an aromatic phenylalanine-tryptophan dipeptide and terminated with zwitterionic lysine (Fmoc-FWK) and its cationic form (Fmoc-FWK-NH2) were designed for self-assembly into chiral structures. It was found that the Fmoc-FWK peptide self-assembled into left-handed helical nanoribbons at pH 11.2-11.8, whereas it formed nanofibers at pH 5 and 12 and large flat ribbons composed of many nanofibers in the pH range of 6-11. However, only nanofibers were observed in the cases of Fmoc-FWK-NH2 at different values. A series of structural characterizations based on CD, FTIR, UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy reveal that the electrostatic and aromatic interactions and the associated hydrogen bonding direct the self-assembly into various structures. The enhanced π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding were found in the helical nanoribbons. This difference in intermolecular interactions should be derived from the ionization of carboxyl and amino groups from lysine residues at different pH values. Furthermore, we performed molecular dynamics simulations to gain insight into the assembly mechanisms. The results imply that a relatively rigid molecular conformation and the strong intramolecular aromatic interaction between Trp and Fmoc groups favor chiral self-assembly. This study is the first attempt to design a Fmoc-tripeptide for the fabrication of helical structures with macroscopic chirality, which provides a successful example and allows us to create new peptide-based chiral assembly systems.

Chiral Polymer Dots Show Unexpected Versatility of Highly Ordered Self-Assembly into Chiroptical Liquid Crystals, Ultra-Thin Films, and Long-Ribbons

Abstract:Compared to the organic counterparts, chiral self-assembly of nanomaterials shows persistency to kinetic factors such as solvent environments, and consequently, dynamic modulation of self-assembly and functions remains major challenge. Here, it is shown that alkylated, chiral polymer dots (c-PDs) give highly ordered self-assemblies with amplified chirality adaptive to solvent environments, and one-to-many hierarchical aggregation can be realized. The c-PDs tended to self-assemble into nanohelices with cubic packing in the solid state, which, thanks to the thermo-responsiveness, transformed into thermic liquid crystals upon heating. Cotton effects and circularly polarized luminescence evidenced the chirality transfer from central chirality to supramolecular chirality. At the air-water interface, the c-PDs are self-assembled into monolayers, which further stack into multiple layers with chirality transfer and highly ordered packing. In addition, undergoing a good/poor solvent exchange, the c-PDs afforded ultra-long microribbons up to a length scale of millimeters, which are constituted by the bilayer lamellar stacking. The versatile chiral self-assembly modalities with long-range ordered packing arrays of carbonized c-PDs via solvent strategy are realized. This feature is comparable to the organic species, although the c-PDs have no atomic precise structures. This work would surely expand the applications of quantum dot ordered self-assembly with adaptiveness to kinetic factors.

Abstract:During the construction of supramolecular polymers of smaller nanoparticles/nanoclusters bearing hierarchy and homochirality, the mechanism understanding via intuitive visualization and precise cross-scale chirality modulation is still challenging. For this goal, a cooperative self-assembly strategy is here proposed by using ionic complexes with uniform chemical composition comprising polyanionic nanocluster cores and surrounded chiral cationic organic components as monomers for supramolecular polymerization. The single helical polymer chains bearing a core-shell structure at utmost length over 20 μm are demonstrated showing comparable flexibility resembling covalent polymers. A nucleation-elongation growth mechanism that is not dealt with in nanoparticle systems is confirmed to be accompanied by strict chiral self-sorting. A permeable membrane prepared by simple suction of such supramolecular polymers displays high enantioselectivity (e.e. 98% after four runs) for separating histidine derivatives, which discloses a benefiting helical chain structure-induced functionalization for macroscopic supramolecular materials in highly efficient racemate separation.
Supramolecular Helical Nanofibers Assembled from A Pyridinium-Functionalized Methyl Glycyrrhetate Amphiphile

Abstract:A glycyrrhetate-containing amphiphile, MGP (1-[2-(methyl glycyrrhetate)-2-oxoethyl]pyridinium bromide), has been synthesized, and found to assemble into supramolecular helical nanofibers in chloroform/aromatic solvents, which are primarily driven by π-π stacking, van der Waals forces, and hydrophobic interactions. During the assembly process, MGP stacked into J-aggregates resulting in the sequestration of the hydrophilic pyridinium cation within the interior with the concomitant projection of its hydrophobic skeleton on the outside surface. Ultimately, this protrusion generated a staggered angle due to the steric hindrance between stacked molecules. This staggered angle further led to molecular misalignments and the formation of helical fibrils, which could twist with each other to fabricate larger helical fibers. Consequently, a gel was formed by intertwining these nanofibers into three-dimensional networks. Using this strategy, we found that other triterpenoid-tailored pyridinium amphiphiles are also potential scaffolds for supramolecular helical structures. This work provides a facile approach for the fabrication of supramolecular macroscopic chiral nanostructures that originate from natural products.
Molecular tuning of DNA framework-programmed silicification by cationic silica cluster attachment

Abstract:The organizational complexity of biominerals has long fascinated scientists seeking to understand biological programming and implement new developments in biomimetic materials chemistry. Nonclassical crystallization pathways have been observed and analyzed in typical crystalline biominerals, involving the controlled attachment and reconfiguration of nanoparticles and clusters on organic templates. However, the understanding of templated amorphous silica mineralization remains limited, hindering the rational design of complex silica-based materials. Here, we present a systematic study on the stabilization of self-capping cationic silica cluster (CSC) and their assembly dynamics using DNA nanostructures as programmable attachment templates. By tuning the composition and structure of CSC, we demonstrate high-fidelity silicification at single-cluster resolution, revealing a process of adaptive templating involving cooperative adjustments of both the DNA framework and cluster morphology. Our results provide a unified model of silicification by cluster attachment and pave the way towards the molecular tuning of pre- and post-nucleation stages of sol-gel reactions. Overall, our findings provide new insights for the design of silica-based materials with controlled organization and functionality, bridging the gap between biomineralization principles and the rational design of biomimetic material.

Active Regulation of Supramolecular Chirality through Integration of CdSe/CdS Nanorods for Strong and Tunable Circular Polarized Luminescence

Abstract:Building the cooperativity in artificial self-assembling systems will synergistically reshape their properties and expand their application spectrum. Here, we show how the cooperativity between achiral CdSe/CdS nanorods (NRs) and chiral perylene diimide (PDI)-based molecules is built upon their coassembly. We demonstrate that chirality transfer from chiral molecular assemblies to CdSe/CdS NRs is enabled by the encapsulation of NRs into PDI suprascrolls through chain-chain van der Waals interactions, which in turn gives rise to markedly enhanced circularly polarized luminescence of the nanocomposites. Additionally, the circularly polarized emissive bands of the nanocomposites could be finely tuned by engineering the emissive bands of NRs. More importantly, these nanocomposites are able to invert their chirality when NRs are self-assembled into chiral superlattices under a larger amount of NRs. Detailed mechanistic studies unveil that these jammed NRs assemblies hamper the folding of two-dimensional (2D) chiral nanosheets, which consequently suppress the interlayer excitonic coupling and implement the nanocomposites with inverted chirality. Our finding exemplifies a way to invert the chirality switching from folding to unfolding of 2D supramolecular nanosheets, akin to the chirality inversion in the helix-to-superhelix transition in conventional one-dimensional (1D) supramolecular systems. We also show that the strong van der Waals interactions from aliphatic chains are crucial in achieving such chirality transfer and inversion. Overall, we demonstrate that these achiral CdS/CdSe NRs could serve as artificial molecular chaperones to aid the unfolding of supramolecular nanosheets with controlled chirality.

Abstract:A detailed investigation of the formation and properties of mesoporous silica templated by the chiral nematic liquid crystal phase of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) is presented. Under appropriate conditions, CNCs co‐assemble with silica up to loadings of ≈60 wt% to give composite films with periodic chiral nanostructures. The periodicity of these films can be readily controlled to obtain materials that selectively reflect light with wavelengths ranging from ≈400–1400 nm. The co‐assembly of CNCs and silica into ordered chiral nematic structures is demonstrated to occur within a narrow window of pH and is affected by aging: a slow rate of silica condensation appears to be vital for the formation of well‐ordered materials. CNCs can be removed from the composite films by calcination or acid hydrolysis to give high surface area chiral nematic mesoporous silica (CNMS) with tunable pore diameters. The combination of mesoporosity and chiral nematic ordering in CNMS enables it to be used in a unique way for refractometric sensing applications. It is shown that, when using circular dichroism (CD) signals to monitor the chiral photonic properties of CNMS, variations in refractive index can be detected based on changes of both CD signal intensity and peak position with good sensitivity.

Abstract:Chirality evolution from molecule levels to the nanoscale in an achiral system is a fundamental issue that remains undiscovered. Here, we report the assembly of polyoxometalate (POM) clusters into chiral subnanostructures in achiral systems by programmable single-molecule interactions. Driven by the competing binding of Ca2+ and surface ligands, POM assemblies would twist into helical nanobelts, nanorings, and nanotubes with tunable helicity. Chiral molecules can be used to differentiate the formation energies of chiral isomers and immobilize the homochiral isomer, where strong circular dichroism (CD) signals are obtained in both solutions and films. Chiral helical nanobelts can be used as circularly polarized light (CPL) photodetectors due to their distinct chiroptic responsivity for right and left CPL. By the fine-tuning of interactions at single-molecule levels, the morphology and CD spectra of helical assemblies can be precisely controlled, providing an atomic precision model for investigation of the structure-chirality relationship and chirality manipulation at the nanoscale.

Abstract:Studying the interactions between biomolecules and material interfaces play a crucial role in the designing and synthesizing of functional bionanomaterials with tailored structure and function. Previously, a lot of studies were performed on the self-assembly of peptides in solution through internal and external stimulations, which mediated the creation of peptide nanostructures from zero-dimension to three-dimension. In this study, we demonstrate the self-assembly behavior of the GNNQQNY peptide on the surface of mica and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite through tailoring the self-assembly conditions. Various factors, such as the type of dissolvent, peptide concentration, pH value, and evaporation period on the formation of peptide nanofibers and nanoribbons with single- and bi-directional arrays are investigated. It is found that the creation of peptide nanoribbons on both mica and HOPG can be achieved effectively through adjusting and optimizing the experimental parameters. Based on the obtained results, the self-assembly and formation mechanisms of peptide nanoribbons on both material interfaces are discussed. It is expected that the findings obtained in this study will inspire the design of motif-specific peptides with high binding affinity towards materials and mediate the green synthesis of peptide-based bionanomaterials with unique function and application potential.
