Abstract:Self-supporting highly conductive polymers are strongly demanded for high-rate flexible supercapacitors. In this work, we demonstrate that solution-processed poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) nanowires with tens of micrometers in length can facilely assemble into highly flexible PEDOT films for high-rate supercapacitors. Our results show that the conductivity of the films (50.8–100 S cm–1) relies on the polymerization time of the nanowires and longer time favors doping of dodecyl sulfate anions but results in a decrease of carrier mobility from 16.08 to 6.05 cm2 V–1 s–1. A specific capacitance of 137 F g–1 along with 98% capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles has been achieved in 1 M H2SO4. Moreover, due to the favorable ion and electron pathways and rapid pseudocapacitive redox reactions, these PEDOT films exhibit nearly thickness-independent capacitive performance even as the film thickness increases up to 100 μm. A solid-state capacitor built with a PEDOT film delivers an energy density of 1.38 mWh cm–3 at 27.9 mW cm–3. Meanwhile, it also exhibits superior long-term electrochemical stability without obvious capacitance decay and excellent structural integrity under various deformation tests. These outstanding properties demonstrate that the PEDOT nanowires could become one of the promising building blocks for developing flexible electrodes with an interconnected network for future high-rate energy storage devices.

Nitrogen-Enriched Hollow Porous Carbon Nanospheres with Tailored Morphology and Microstructure for All-Solid-State Symmetric Supercapacitors

Abstract:We develop a straightforward and highly efficient approach to design N-enriched hollow porous carbon nanospheres (N-HPCNs) based on the self-polymerization of dopamine in mixed water/ethanol solvents. The control of the morphology, pore parameters, and nitrogen content of N-HPCNs can be effectively achieved by simple tuning of the volume ratios of water/ethanol and the amounts of the solvents. The representative N-HPCNs exhibit the characteristics of spherical and hollow geometry with a uniform diameter (similar to 400 nm), high surface area (1789 m(2) g(-1)), abundant ultramicropores with reasonable supermicro- and mesopores, and high-level nitrogen content (up to 6.86 wt %). N-HPCNs as supercapacitor electrodes in 6 M KOH electrolyte show outstanding electrochemical performances including a high specific capacitance (353 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1)), superb rate capability (214 F g(-1) at 20 A g(-1)), and excellent cycling stability (91.9% capacitance retention at 1.0 A g(-1) after 10,000 cycles). Furthermore, the assembled symmetric all-solid-state supercapacitor based on N-HPCN electrodes and poly(vinyl alcohol)/KOH gel electrolyte exhibits high integrated energy-power density of 10.42 W h kg(-1) at 250 W kg(-1). This study provides promising prospects to design N-doped carbons with tailored morphology and microstructure for high-performance supercapacitors.
Assembling Nitrogen and Oxygen Co-Doped Graphene Quantum Dots Onto Hierarchical Carbon Networks for All-Solid-state Flexible Supercapacitors

Abstract:We present a novel approach for hierarchical fabrication of high-performance, all-solid-state, flexible supercapacitors from environmentally friendly all-carbon materials. Three-dimensional carbon nanotube/carbon cloth network (CNT/CC) is used as a conductive, flexible and free-standing scaffold for the electro-deposition of highly N/O co-doped graphene quantum dots to form the high-activity, all-carbon electrodes. The hierarchical structure of the CNT/CC network with high electrical conductivity and high surface area provides improved conductive pathways for the efficient activation of GQDs with high pseudocapacitance and electrical double layer capacitance. The obtained N-O-GQD/CNT/CC electrodes for all-solid-state flexible supercapacitors exhibit an ultrahigh areal capacitance of up to 461 mF cm (2) at a current density of 0.5 mA cm (2), while keeping high rate and cyclic performances. Polyaniline-coated electrospun carbon nanofibers with high mass loading and enhanced capacitive performance as freestanding electrodes for flexible solid-state supercapacitors

Abstract:Freestanding electrodes with high capacitive performances are designed and constructed for flexible solid-state supercapacitors. Self-supporting electrospun CNFs (carbon nanofibers) networks with high surface areas and good conductivities were used as both internal current collectors and supports for pseudocapacitive materials. Repetitive in situ chemical polymerization of aniline monomers was adopted to deposit PANI (polyaniline) nanoflakes on CNFs continuously, with the advantages of good uniformity and controllable mass loading of PANI on CNFs. The specific capacitances of the as-synthesized series of CNFs/PANI composites based electrodes increased dramatically from 257 to 407 F/g accompanying with the increased mass loading of PANI from 32 to 78 wt.%. Moreover, two pieces of the obtained freestanding CNFs/PANI composite electrodes were also assembled into a solid-state supercapacitor by using polyvinyl alcohol/H2SO4 gel as electrolyte. The as-fabricated device presented excellent electrochemical performance with a specific capacitance of 201 F/g, an energy density of 4.5 Wh/kg at the power density of 103 W/kg, 80% capacitance retention after 6000 cycles, low leakage current and self-discharge characteristics and good flexibility. The flexible solid-state supercapacitors based on the freestanding CNFs/PANI composites might have potential applications in portable and flexible electronics.

Abstract:Research and development on all-solid-state, flexible supercapacitors is the prime concern of the scientific community these days due to their various advantages including their easy transportability, miniaturization, and compactness in different appliances. We report the novel configuration of all-solid symmetrical supercapacitors employing free-standing, flexible films of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and its nanocomposite electrodes with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), separated by ionic liquid (IL) (1-ethyl 3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate (EMITf))-based gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) films. The free-standing and flexible form of PEDOT:PSS/GNP nanocomposite films have been prepared via simple mixing of the two counterparts. Scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, Raman analysis, and thermal and mechanical characterizations have been performed to ascertain the suitability of pristine and nanocomposite PEDOT:PSS films as potential supercapacitor electrodes. The GPE film, comprising of a solution of NH4CF3SO3 (NH4-triflate or NH4Tf) in IL, entrapped in poly(vinylidine fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP), is a promising electrolyte due to its high ionic conductivity and sufficient electrochemical stability window. The supercapacitor with a PEDOT:PSS nanocomposite containing ∼3.8 wt.% of GNP has been found to give an optimum specific capacitance of ∼106 F g-1 (evaluated from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy), and specific energy and power of ∼6.95 Wh kg-1 and 2.58 kW kg-1, respectively (evaluated from galvanostatic charge-discharge). More importantly, the capacitors demonstrate stable performance for more than 2000 charge-discharge cycles, with only ∼10% initial fading in capacitance. Interestingly, the PEDOT:PSS/GNP nanocomposite-based solid-state supercapacitors with the IL-incorporated GPE have shown comparable (even better) performance than other reported PEDOT:PSS-based supercapacitors.

Abstract:Free-standing, three-dimensional (3D) V2O5 nanobelts coated with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) on vertically aligned CNTs (VA-CNTs)/graphene foam (GF) (PEDOT-V2O5-VA-CNTs/GF) are constructed for flexible energy storage devices. The well-aligned structure of VA-CNTs and light-weight, highly conductive GF lead to highly efficient ionic and electronic transport channels, which are of scientific and practical significance for energy storage/conversion applications. PEDOT-V2O5-VA-CNTs/GF delivers a specific capacitance of 1016 F g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1) when tested in an aqueous electrolyte. All-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor devices have been fabricated to demonstrate its flexibility in charging and discharging. Polypyrrole (PPy)/VA-CNTs/GF was used as the negative electrode, PEDOT-V2O5-VA-CNTs/GF as the positive electrode, and PVA/LiNO3 as the solid electrolyte. The solid-state flexible supercapacitors exhibit a high specific capacitance of 48.83 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) and an energy density of 17.34 W h kg(-1) at a power density of 0.71 kW kg(-1) with good cycle stability as well. This work highlights the advantages of the VA-CNTs/GF substrate in the hybrid electrode with V2O5 embedded among the VA-CNT interstitials for high-performance flexible energy storage devices.

Abstract:High-performance free-standing PEDOT:PSS electrodes with not only superior optoelectronic performance and high flexibility but also excellent electrochemical performance were successfully fabricated via facile multilayer spin-coating of a doped PEDOT: PSS solution. Superior optoelectronic performance and high electrochemical performance could be simultaneously achieved via doping PEDOT: PSS and modulating the layer numbers of the spin-coated PEDOT: PSS. Flexible and transparent all-solid-state supercapacitors with both superior electrochemical performance and relatively high optical transparency were fabricated for the first time using the resultant high-performance PEDOT: PSS films as both the current collectors and the active electrodes.

Abstract:To satisfy the increasing requirement of flexible energy storage devices, various free-standing flexible conductive substrates were developed to construct high-performance supercapacitor electrodes. In this work, free-standing, flexible and conductive Si3N4 nanowires (NWs)@pyrolytic carbon (PyC) membrane, served as nanoscale substrate, was fabricated by a two-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. NiCo2O4 nanosheets (NSs) and Fe2O3 nanorods (NRs) were finally grown on Si3N4NWs@PyC membrane substrates, which were directly served as the positive and negative electrodes, respectively. The membrane electrodes possesss the structural advantages, such as the interwoven network structure of nanowires substrates and array structure of active materials, which guarantee the excellent electrochemical performance of electrodes. Additionally, the flexible solid-state hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) assembled by Si3N4NWs@PyC@NiCo2O4NSs and Si3N4NWs@PyC@Fe2O3NRs, delivered a high energy density of 74.3 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 0.8 kW kg−1, excellent cycling stability (Capacitance retention of 84.6% after 4000 cycles), and good flexibility. Impressively, this work provides a new thinking about the structural design of high-performance supercapacitor electrodes as well as expands the application field of ceramic nanowires macrostructures.

Abstract:The development of high-performance and flexible supercapacitors is of urgent demand but still challenging. MXene, a novel two-dimensional material, has metallic conductivity, good hydrophilicity, and high redox activity. Significantly, its good electrochemical and mechanical properties suggest its great potential in flexible supercapacitors. However, the poor interlayer conductivity and self-stacking of MXene flakes hinder the charge transfer and ion transport. Herein, a three-dimensional porous structure composed of MXene, carbon nanocoils (CNCs) and Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) (denoted as MXene/CNC/PP) has been successfully prepared by a facile drop-coating method for flexible film electrode. The CNCs, having unique 3D helical structures and excellent dispersity, insert into the MXene flakes to prevent their over stack and provide spaces and channels for electrolyte storage and ion transport inside the composite structure. Meanwhile, the CNCs also act as highly conductive bridges to connect the MXene flakes, enhancing the charge transfer. To increase the stability of the composite structure, the conducting polymer PEDOT:PSS was selected as an conductive binder to prepare self-supported MXene/CNC/PP film electrodes without additional additives. The MXene/CNC/PP electrode exhibits an areal capacitance of 232 mF cm−2 at 10 mV s−1 with superior rate capability, excellent cycling stability and flexibility. This paper provides a new strategy for construction of wearable high-performance flexible electrodes and supercapacitors.

The MVNNs are synthesized by way of a hydrothermal synthesis followed by thermal nitridation under an ammonia atmosphere. The devices show a stable performance and high volumetric capacitance, along with high volume energy and power density. These electrodes have potential applications in portable/wearable electronics.

Abstract:The development of flexible carbon‐based film electrodes with high loading and sufficient electron/ion transport channels is of great significance but still challenging. Herein, a flexible high‐loading (over 15 mg cm–2) film with 3D hierarchical pores is prepared by an alternate deposition of carbon nanocoils (CNCs) and poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). The unique alternate architecture of CNC/PEDOT:PSS bilayers possesses porous structure constructed by interconnected CNCs, which serves as transfer channels and storage chambers of ions. Meanwhile, the PEDOT:PSS layers anchoring CNCs function as not only the cement to ensure the stability of the film structure but also the current collectors to improve electron transfer kinetics between interlayers. The film electrode shows excellent flexibility and electrochemical properties. It delivers a high areal capacitance of 1402.5 mF cm–2 at 0.25 mA cm–2 and a superior stability even at an extremely high current density of 50 mA cm–2 after 10 000 cycles. The corresponding solid‐state supercapacitor has great energy storage ability and steady capacitance response under various deformation. The device achieves a superb energy density of 211 μW h cm–2 with a wide potential window of 2 V. This strategy paves a road for the controllable fabrication of high‐performance flexible electrodes and supercapacitors. A flexible and high‐mass‐loading (over 15 mg cm−2) film with 3D connected hierarchical pores is constructed by an alternate layer‐by‐layer deposition of carbon nanocoils (CNCs) and poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). The alternatively layered film shows an ideal electrode structure in which electrons transfer along the 3D conductive network of PEDOT:PSS and CNCs, while ions are transported and stored in the connected pores.

Abstract:Fiber-shaped solid-state supercapacitors have aroused much interest in the fields of portable devices because of their attractive features such as high flexibility and safety, tiny volume, and high power density. In this work, NiO/Ni(OH)2 nanoflowers encapsulated in three-dimensional interconnected poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) have been fabricated on contra wires through a mild electrochemical route. The as-formed hybrid electrode made of NiO/Ni(OH)2/PEDOT delivered a high specific capacitance of 404.1 mF cm(-2) (or 80.8 F cm(-3)) at a current density of 4 mA cm(-2) and a long cycle life with 82.2% capacitance retention after 1000 cycles. Furthermore, a fiber-shaped flexible all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor based on the resulting hybrid electrode was assembled. The energy density of 0.011 mWh cm(-2) at a power density of 0.33 mW cm(-2) was achieved under an operating voltage window of 1.45 V. This work provides an effective strategy to fabricate high-performance electrodes for fiber-shaped flexible asymmetric supercapacitors through a facile and low-cost route.
A Low‐Cost, Self‐Standing NiCo2O4@CNT/CNT Multilayer Electrode for Flexible Asymmetric Solid‐State Supercapacitors

Abstract:The demand for a new generation of flexible, portable, and high‐capacity power sources increases rapidly with the development of advanced wearable electronic devices. Here we report a simple process for large‐scale fabrication of self‐standing composite film electrodes composed of NiCo2O4@carbon nanotube (CNT) for supercapacitors. Among all composite electrodes prepared, the one fired in air displays the best electrochemical behavior, achieving a specific capacitance of 1,590 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 while maintaining excellent stability. The NiCo2O4@CNT/CNT film electrodes are fabricated via stacking NiCo2O4@CNT and CNT alternately through vacuum filtration. Lightweight, flexible, and self‐standing film electrodes (≈24.3 µm thick) exhibit high volumetric capacitance of 873 F cm−3 (with an areal mass of 2.5 mg cm−2) at 0.5 A g−1. An all‐solid‐state asymmetric supercapacitor consists of a composite film electrode and a treated carbon cloth electrode has not only high energy density (≈27.6 Wh kg−1) at 0.55 kW kg−1 (including the weight of the two electrodes) but also excellent cycling stability (retaining ≈95% of the initial capacitance after 5000 cycles), demonstrating the potential for practical application in wearable devices.

Abstract:The carboxylic acid functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes/polyaniline nanotubes (PANI-NTs)/carboxylic acid functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes electrodes for the flexible supercapacitors are fabricated by the layer-by-layer vacuum filtration. This strategy is aimed to assist powdery PANI-NTs to form a binder-free electrode, and meanwhile avoid sufficient contact between PANI-NTs and carbon nanotubes, ensuring abundant channels with a low tortuosity for enhanced electrolyte permeation and ion diffusion as well as large ion available surface area. Consequently, the assembled all-solid-state device achieves a high areal capacitance (258 mF cm−2 at current density of 0.5 mA cm−2), a superior energy density (3.82 m Wh cm−3 at a power density 33 mW cm−3) and favorable cycle stability (75.1% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles). Furthermore, the supercapacitor possesses outstanding flexibility and can be 180° bended up to 1000 times without loss of capacitance. Our works reveal that electrode structure design and fabrication procedures are also significant factors that greatly dominates electrochemical performance of supercapacitors.
Nitrogen‐doped porous nanocarbons‐conducting polymer composite film electrodes for flexible supercapacitors

Abstract:Flexible composite film based on N‐doped porous nanocarbon and PEDOT:PSS conducting polymer for supercapacitor electrode is demonstrated. N‐doped porous nanocarbon derived from porous ZIF‐8 crystals provides high surface area with hierarchical porosity, while PEDOT:PSS provides additional active sites and serves as a conducting binder to form a robust film, resulting in high‐performance flexible supercapacitor electrode. Summary Heteroatom‐doped carbtableons derived from carbonization of highly porous metal organic framework (MOF) nanocrystals have received tremendous attention due to their exceptional surface areas. They can be used as conductive supports for various electrocatalysts. Depending on the synthesis, various MOFs with different coordination structures, morphologies, and porosities can be designed for versatile applications such as gas storage, catalysis, and energy storage systems. In this work, we combine nitrogen‐doped carbon nanoparticles derived from zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF‐8) with PEDOT:PSS, a conductive polymer mixture, for highly flexible supercapacitor electrode. The composite film exhibits a 3D interconnected network favorable for fast charge transfer kinetics with a high surface area. This nitrogen‐doped porous carbon‐PEDOT:PSS composite film shows good specific energy of 7.19 Wh kg−1 and good rate performance as well as long cycle life for at least 5000 charge‐discharge cycles.

All-solid State Symmetric Supercapacitors Based on Compressible and Flexible Free-Standing 3D Carbon Nanotubes (Cnts)/poly(3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) Sponge Electrodes

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors that maintain electrochemical performance under deformation have attracted much attention for the potential application in the flexible electronics market. A compressible and flexible free-standing electrodes sponge and all-solid-state symmetric supercapacitors based on as prepared electrodes are presented. The carbon nanotubes (CNTs) framework is synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, and then composited with poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) PEDOT by the electrodeposition. This CNTs/PEDOT sponge electrode shows highest mass-specific capacitance of 147 Fg(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1), tuned by the PEDOT mass loading, and exhibits good cyclic stability with the evidence that more than 95% of capacitance is remained after 3000 cycles. Furthermore, the symmetric supercapacitor shows the highest energy density of 12.6 Wh kg(-1) under the power density of 1 kW kg(-1) and highest power density of 10.2 kW kg(-1) with energy density of 8 Wh kg(-1), which exhibits both high energy density and power density. The electrochemical performance of composite electrode also indicates that the operate voltage of device could be extend to 1.4 V by the n-doping and p-doping process in different potential of PEDOT component. This flexible supercapacitor maintains stable electrochemical performance working on different bending condition, which shows promising prospect for wearable energy storage applications. Abstract:In the research of wearable smart electronics, obtaining particular structure electrodes to provide outstanding mechanical flexible and electrochemical performance remains challenging. In this study, flexible multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) nanocomposite electrodes are fabricated via dip-coating and vapor phase polymerization methods. A poriferous network structure of composite electrode is achieved through incorporation of MWCNTs to the conducting polymer matrix. These interconnected holes on electrodes and the synergetic effects between MWCNTs and PEDOT polymer yield large surface areas and favorable electrochemical performances. A single composite electrode exhibits a high areal capacitance of 92.55 F/cm 2 , as well as good cycling stability with 94% of its initial charge after 5500 cycles. An all-solid-state micro-supercapacitor based on MWCNTs/PEDOT electrodes is also assembled by sandwiching the polyvinyl alcohol–H 3 PO 4 gel electrolyte, which displays an areal capacitance of 32.06 mF/cm 2 . This belt-shaped flexible micro-supercapacitor served as energy storage device shows significant potentiality in wearable electronics.
Ultralong-Cycling and Free-Standing Carboxylated Graphene/PEDOT:PSS Films as Electrode for Flexible Supercapacitors

Abstract:The rapid development of current wearable electronics motivates the promotion of energy storage devices. Supercapacitor with flexible, lightweight, highly efficient, and long cycling life is one of the potential and glittering candidates. Here, the composite film of carboxylated graphene (CG) and commercially available poly (3, 4-ethylene dioxythiophene): poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) are prepared as electrodes for flexible electrochemical capacitors by ultrasonication and vacuum filtration. The CG/PEDOT:PSS films were roundly characterized by SEM, XPS, FTIR, XRD and Raman spectrometer. The as-prepared free-standing films exhibited high specific capacitance (192.7 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1), excellent rate capability (up to 80.4% from 0.5 to 20 A g-1), and good electrochemical stability (95.5% of specific capacitance retention after 50000 cycles). Surprisingly, the post treated free-standing films by Dimethyl Formamide (DMF) shows better capacitive properties than those of the pristine electrode, such as higher specific capacitance (204.3 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1), and ultralong-cycling stability (104.6% retention at a high current density of 20 A g-1 after 50000 cycles). It is expected that the free-standing CG/PEDOT:PSS films can be used as flexible electrodes for various wearable energy storage devices.
