Abstract:Today, typing in Chinese works by converting QWERTY keystrokes into Chinese characters via a software interface, known as an input method editor. But this was not always the case. Thomas S. Mullaney's new book, The Chinese Computer: A Global History of the Information Age, published by the MIT Press, unearths the forgotten history of Chinese input in the 20th century. In this article, which was adapted from an excerpt of the book, he details the varied Chinese input systems of the 1960s and 1970s that renounced QWERTY altogether. "This will destroy China forever," a young Taiwanese cadet thought as he sat in rapt attention. The renowned historian Arnold J. Toynbee was on stage, delivering a lecture at Washington and Lee University on "A Changing World in Light of History." The talk plowed the professor's favorite field of inquiry: the genesis, growth, death, and disintegration of human civilizations, immortalized in his magnum opus A Study of History. Tonight's talk threw the spotlight on China.

Abstract:The Chinese language textbook Yü-yen Tz?-êrh Chi, which was written by Westerners and published at the middle of 19 th Century, was revised three times since 1850s. As the first systematic course book modeling Peking Mandarin, it has profound influence on Sino-Western cultural exchange. Besides these formal publications recorded in bibliographic data, some block-printed editions of Yü-yen Tz?-êrh Chi bound in threads have been found in Shanghai Library. By drawing on its content, relevant documents and historical records, the paper finds out the source edition on which subsequent block-printed editions were based. More information on the publication and using of these reprint copies have been discovered by the survey and analysis of the stamps and handwritten notes in these copies. It is a vivid case study in the language and culture contact between China and West in the late 19 th Century.

Abstract:The Chinese language textbook Yü-yen Tzǔ-êrh Chi,which has three editions published in 1867,1886 and1903 respectively, preserved a rich and precious corpus materials of spoken Mandarin in mid-19th century. A part of its contents raced back to Manchu-Chinese textbook Qing Wen Zhi Yao, and the textbooks published in China by Thomas Francis Wade, which are Hsin Ching Lu: Book of Experiment, Wen Da Pian and Deng Ying Pian. This paper reveals the characteristics of Yü-yen Tzǔ-êrh Chi’s corpus by the research of its version and origin, and proves the value of its corpus by a case study of X+"tian(天)"/"er(儿)"/"ri"(日).

Abstract:Abstract What would Chinese history look like with things taking the center stage? Our present understanding of this history is animated primarily by literate people in pursuit of examination degrees and sons, and often filtered through such modern social science categories as culture, ethnicity, and gender. In this introduction, I put the set of five articles in the special issue in conversation with recent research to identify new analytic categories and research strategies that accord agency to things, remap the parameters of Chinese history, and ponder the new directions afforded by the study of material cultures.

Abstract:The invention of printing from movable types is second only to the clock in its critical effect upon our civilization; and in its own right exemplifies the much broader passage, constantly going on in our own day, from the tool to the hand-worked machine. Probably many people in this audience know, at least in outline, the story of printing, so admirably put together by Thomas Carter, the veritable unraveling of a mystery from which only the very last link in the chain seems still to be absent. Printing swept across the world, from China and Korea, where movable types were first invented, into Europe, in the course of a century. Printing broke the class monopoly of the written word, and it provided the common man with a means of gaining access to the culture of the world, at least, all of that culture as had been translated into words or other printable symbols.

Abstract:Reading the 26 essays of this well-regarded book now in its third edition was such a pleasurable experience that I wanted to teach a course in which I might assign it to my students. The text would be of particular interest to engineering students—it is about their profession—as well as of interest to people in the field of the history of technology. The main strength of the work is its sometimes novel choice of topics. Its occasional weakness is the failure of some important subjects to appear. Historians of technology will recognize some familiar names in the list of essayists. Merritt Roe Smith writes about Eli Whitney's role in the American system of manufacturing and demolishes the notion that Whitney pioneered manufacturing with interchangeable parts. Thomas Parke Hughes writes on Thomas Edison, and Ruth Schwartz Cowan on Ellen Swallow Richards, in 1870, the first woman to graduate from MIT and the driving force behind the establishment of the discipline of home economics.

Historical Writing and Memory Construction——Gutenberg in Modern China

Abstract:This paper examines the ways in which Gutenberg was written, represented and constructed in relation to Chinese printing technology in the historical writings of modern Chinese scholars in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It argues that the complex dynamics shaped not only the writing of Chinese printing history but also the collective memory of printing technology in modern China. It reveals that the Japanese factor has been largely neglected and should be put in the historical context of knowledge dissemination in East Asia at the turn of the century. Exploring the representation, reception and adaptation of Gutenberg as a cultural signifier in the late Qing and early Republican periods, it concludes that the Chinese intellectuals endeavored to situate China in the world in the past and the present to demonstrate the contribution of China’s role in the process of globalization and the quest of print capitalism and modernity.
